Hey Friend, This week, I had the pleasure of chatting with Danielle LaBonté, a branding expert whose journey to becoming a graphic designer is as inspiring as her advice. While studying art history design in Italy, Danielle had an aha moment while working on her thesis. She realized she didn't want to write about artists—she was called to be an artist. That calling wouldn't go away, and it changed everything.   As Danielle puts it, her professor was more passionate about her thesis than she was. That realization led her to do a complete 180—leaving her art history path behind and going back to school to study graphic design. Now, she's on a mission to help others find fulfillment in their calling and build brands that tell their unique stories.   Because, as Danielle says: "Your brand isn't just a logo or colors—it's the story you tell and the connection you build with your audience. Align your business with your purpose, and success will follow."   Here's what we covered: The foundational branding elements you need from day one The impact of a professionally designed logo on client first impressions How to create a cohesive brand identity (think colors, typography, and style!) Whether a great brand guarantees success—or if there's more to the equation DIY branding: Is it a cost-saving move or a potential risk? Practical steps to launch a brand that stands out and connects with clients Danielle didn't just share tips—she shared strategy. If you're ready to create a brand that speaks to your ideal clients and sets your business apart, this episode is a must-listen. Hit play now and start building the brand of your dreams!

Social Media Marketing Made Simple Podcast

This weeks’ episode is another solo episode, covering some of the basics that you need to know when it comes to branding. Although I am not a designer and I have little experience when it comes to creating assets, branding and design is incredibly important from a marketing point of view. Having had lots of conversations about branding recently, I thought now would be a great opportunity to cover some of the basics you need to know when it comes to building a brand that is recognisable. Key Takeaways Covered in the Podcast ·      Your logo is your identifier but your brand is absolutely everything that goes with it. When you see a logo, it’s very rare you’d see it alone. It could be on a website, a business card, on social media or on an email signature. ·      Your brand also includes fonts, colours, styles and photos. ·      Your branding is effectively your shop front. It’s how people are going to judge you. ·      Think about the brands you interact with and how you perceive their brands. ·      If you’re struggling when it comes to inspiration, Pinterest is a great place to start. Try searching for your industry and then using the word ‘logo’ or ‘branding’ afterwards. Save a board of everything you like, making a note of the aspects you like as you do it. ·      Pinterest is also great when it comes to searching for colour palettes. ·      If you’re in a sensitive industry, you need to think about the imagery you’re going to use. Stock sites are a great place to get inspiration for these photos. ·      When you’re looking at your new designs, you need to think about whether or not they’re going to look good on social media. The easier to read, the better. ·      If you’re your business, it’s okay to use your face. ·      You need to ensure your branding truly represents you and your brand. ·      Think about where you’re going to use your branding, as often this will often determine how many elements you need to make up your branding. ·      Your designer will need to send all of your files over to you when they’re done. They don’t need to design every social media graphic for you, as they can send you over a file that you can easily edit yourself. One thing you need to remember above all else… Coming up with a logo and accompanying branding is incredibly difficult and if you don’t have any design skills, hiring a designer is the best way to ensure you’re doing everything right. Highlights you Simply Can’t Miss·      What Is the Difference Between A Logo and A Brand? – 3:21 ·      Your First Steps – 5:40 ·      Finding Inspiration – 11:25 ·      Thinking Ahead – 13:10 ·      Considering Social Media – 15:00 ·      Creating Your Branding - 17:00

Show Notes: Adam talks of the handoff process of turning the logo he created over to the client Adam talks of the frustration of a client frantically calling to find out information about their logo and brand specifics years later There was not a streamlined solution for Adam's agency to store branding information for their clients Adam and David with Beyond Creative worked with Chase to develop a streamlined tool for storing brands Brand Cards allows for all kinds of file types to be stored for different purposes Adam and Chase created a solution that works well for their agency then made it available to everyone Adam was creative director for James River Church a megachurch Beyond Creative is a digital agency creating video, design, web, and branding leaning towards non-profit work Chase is a pastor who started a church in 2012 and develops websites Pastors need to help people recognize what God is doing with the church The brand gives people context of what God is doing in their lives Brand is showing what God is doing in a unique way through the church Brand is the sum of the perception of what people think of who you are and what you do A good brand has a consistent way to communicate the proper message about who you are A brand also provides the right language so people can communicate the right message about your church Small churches can be strategic and intentional about their brand even without a lot of resources The best way to start creating a brand is to get key leaders together and come up with words that describe what you want to be Start putting stories out there which moves the church closer to the vision You can't be everything as a church because it's hard to keep up with that A brand is as good as the organization is able to implement it Churches must be intentional or the brand will start to drift A brand guide is a way to layout parameters so the implementation is consistent Brand Cards is good for churches to use internally as well as agencies to help establish brands Organizations hire a designer to identify creative decisions that establish a brand The Brand Cards software is set up to present brand decisions in a simple way Designers we want the logo we have created to work as best as it can for your organization Adam's logo design process is an ongoing conversation with the client The design starts simple then builds A good church logo should be simple and not try to communicate too much A logo should be simple and a brand needs to be built around it Design for the long term and try not to be too trendy Adam likes church logos to be masculine so it appeals to men who are sitting at home Chase recommends you find a designer with empathy towards what you are trying to accomplish

I was so excited this week to chat with Emilie Wapnick of Puttylike for this week's episode of Raise Your Hand Say Yes. We talked all about being what Emilie likes to call a “Multipotentialite”. Newsflash: there is nothing wrong with having a lot of passions and interests (and Emilie has created an entire business around serving a community of multi-passionate people). We talked about how to get the right kind of support for your varied interests, and different ways to think about multi-passionatism. We also talked about incorporating your many interests into being an entrepreneur (and how sometimes it's okay not to!). And heads up! I'm taking part in the annual Multi Passionates Must Haves bundle sale - this is a bundle of amazing products valued at $1,599 from me, Emilie, Michelle Ward, Jen Louden, Jen Lee, and so many others that is being offered for only $97 through 11:59pm PST on 5/19. You'll get my new class Branding Basics for the Highly-Creative and will learn how to talk about your creative work (and all the different aspects of it!) so that it makes sense to the rest of the world. This sale is a no-brainer, so don't miss out!   Show Notes: Multi-Passionates Must Haves (on sale through midnight PST Thursday 5/19!) I’m sure all moms can agree that life turns fast pace when you become a mom. It’s hard to slow down when you are trying to keep up with your kids, your house, being a wife, just everyday life. Sometimes you have to slow it down a bit. Learn how to balance everything in life but especially time with family.  Maria Ross, our guest on the show today is going to share with us some tidbits that she uses to balance between life and business.  Maria is a brand strategist, author, actress, owner of Red Slice and speaker. She has received several praises for her book: “Branding Basics for Small Business”. And her second book called “Rebooting my Brain” is a really good read, especially if you have ever been through a health scare. She suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm and this book is a memoir on her amazing recovery. Maria is an inspiration and this episode is definitely worth the listen! Maria shares with us: You have to slow down sometimes—not everything is going to be perfect  The days are long but the years are short Go to a lactation specialist if you need help—there is nothing wrong with asking for a little help! Make sure to set work hours and then set time to spend time with family Don’t try to cram everything into a small amount of time—you won’t be 100% trust me Momentum comes to a screeching halt when you have kids—but the detox is actually good for business ideas! If you are going to be “selfish”, exercise is a great thing to be selfish about—show your kids that exercise is important  Links Mentioned: www.redslice.com twitter: @redslice email: maria [at] red-slice[dot]com
