It's the 50th anniversary of Project Censored, so we had another great discussion w/ its director Mickey Huff of Project about the history of muckraking and how it evolved into the corporate media we have today. We also discussed evolution of media in the Vietnam, Watergate eras and after toward a more complicit approach with government which has led us to the current moment of Trump's threats and intimidation of the media. Finally , we talked about the importance of independent media and investigative journalism. Guest Bio// Mickey Huff is the director of Project Censored (founded in 1976) and is the president of the nonprofit Media Freedom Foundation. "All my writing before this has been poetry, and over the years in my books of poems I found the lines kept getting longer. I think the move towards prose had me working on this journal form, which I've not done. Many people write their journals their entire lives. For me, it's a more dipping in and out of this form of work. I began this segment when my father-in-law was dying, and it began as a small series of prose poems about his decline. What I found myself wanting to do then is weave in stories from work, how they were intersecting with what was going on at home. And the thought that all analysts, all therapists, live in this zone of interwoven stories where we're following multiple narrative threads at once, but we tend to talk to each other in terms of one case story at a time. So it was important to me to have all those levels present, because that's really what a lived life is, is being immersed simultaneously and in all of those." Episode Description: Alice's 'meditative memoir' invites us into the multiple narratives in analysts' lives both within and outside of their offices. She shares how we inevitably bring our own experiences into each clinical hour which forms part of the musicality of the work. Her attention remains on the inside/outside aspects of the body, the mind and our world views. Mortality is never far from her awareness and is reflected in the work she engages in with her patients. She introduces 'Blake' to us and how after 12 years of vital work together, he dies quite prematurely. We discuss the intimate nature of analytic work and how it becomes part of our own inner life. Alice shares a saying of her at times 'directionally challenged' grandfather, "We are headed in the proper general direction" - a theme applicable to many venues of life and psychoanalysis. We close with her reading a poem of Galway Kinnell which concludes with "The still undanced cadence of vanishing" Our Guest: Alice Jones, MD is a personal and consulting analyst at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. She is the author of seven collections of poems and Cadence of Vanishing, a memoir. A collection of essays titled Poetry, Depth, and Endings in Psychoanalysis: Distant Music is forthcoming from Routledge in 2026. Recommended Readings: Alice Jones. (2025) Ever Ending. This week I have the pleasure of presenting this second set from the band's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on September 11, 1981. They are energized throughout.. the opening Stranger builds until they go into a unique 'Franklin's Tower'. Garcia is firing here. Things calm a bit with the 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' but the 'He's Gone' that follows is first rate. Check out the jam at the end of 'Truckin' for some wonderful jamming into Drums. Post-drums is equally enjoyable with a fine 'Other One' leading into a great 'Morning Dew'. The 'Johnny B Goode' set closer seems appropriate.. We celebrate the 82nd birthday of Mickey Hart this week with a great show that took place back on his 38th birthday at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California. The recording starts with Joan Baez regaling Mickey with a 'Happy Birthday' chorus.. once we put that behind us we are led into a hot 'Minglewood' and then a quite nice 'They Love Each Other'. They amp it up a bit with a 'Mama Tried>Mexicali' then Jerry brings out 'Candyman', which leads into a 'Little Red Rooster'. A rocking 'Cumberland Blues' leads into a 'Beat It on Down the Line' and the audience tape lets us hear the crowd loving it.. 'Althea' that follows may be the highlight of the set, but the boys are not done here, with a 'Sailor>Saint' and 'Deal' to close out the first set.... Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 9/11/1981 - Friday Set 1: Banter (Happy Birthday Mickey!) This week on the Deadpod we have the second set from the band's performance at the beautiful Greek Theater in Berkeley California on August 18, 1989. This is pretty classic Dead for this high water period of the band, with a groovin' 'Iko Iko' to open things up, followed by the mellow 'Looks Like Rain'. Jerry brings out a classic 'Terrapin Station' leading into a fine Drums and Space. I love the 'Crazy Fingers' out of space, and the 'Stella Blue' in the ballad slot hits just right. Following the rockin' 'Lovelight' we are treated to a double encore - with 'And We Bid You Goodnight' following a nice 'Black Muddy River'. Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 8/18/1989 - Friday Two Iko Iko [5:52] Looks Like Rain [8:45] Terrapin Station [12:13] > Drums [12:46] > Space [8:32] > Crazy Fingers [8:49] > I Need A Miracle [4:35] > Stella Blue [8:43] > Throwing Stones [8:39] > Turn On Your Love Light [6:22] Encore Black Muddy River [6:09] And We Bid You Good Night [2:30] (1) Comments Rex Foundation Benefit. On today's show, we're chatting with Sarah, the owner of Pretty Penny Vintage, located in Berkeley California. Sarah started selling vintage in 1998, when she got a job at a busy buy-sell-trade store called Mars Mercantile, which taught her a lot about the business. Eventually she held pop-up sales where she sold her own vintage clothing in her apartment, and then in 2006, she opened Pretty Penny with a student loan. She's had multiple locations and iterations of the business throughout its almost 19 year history. But what remains consistent is her love of her local community. The fall from successful doctor to bag lady was painful. In desperation I turned to welfare, and food stamps for survival. The choices were clear. It was and is the site of many protests, drawing vocal minorities to Sproul Plaza and People's Park for demonstrations, activism, and public assembly. So it's come to symbolize what it means to speak out and be heard. But what does it mean to minister to an energized public square? In this Conversing Short, Mark Labberton thinks back to his time ministering in Berkeley, CA. First Presbyterian Church remains a close neighbor to the University of California, Berkeley campus. He describes an approach to public engagement marked by generous listening, a desire to know the individuals so moved to protest and speak out, and offer faithful presence to a community dedicated to protest and activism. About Conversing Shorts “In between my longer conversations with people who fascinate and inspire and challenge me, I share a short personal reflection, a focused episode that brings you the ideas, stories, questions, ponderings, and perspectives that animate Conversing and give voice to the purpose and heart of the show. Thanks for listening with me.” About Mark Labberton Mark Labberton is the Clifford L. Penner Presidential Chair Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Preaching at Fuller Seminary. He served as Fuller's fifth president from 2013 to 2022. He's the host of Conversing. Show Notes Berkeley, CA People's Park Sproul Plaza (site of famous Free Speech Protests of the 1960s) How to intensify their thirst? “What I really wanted was a conversation.” “Listening to God, which is what the life of Christian worship actually is.” “Living a life of listening, which is central to all Christian discipleship.” “I'm here because you're here.” “I wish there had been a lineup of protesters outside first press asking, ‘How dare you?'… why are we not gathering protestors?” “I was wanting to so authentically speak and preach and live the gospel, that we would be the peculiar people that would cause people to say, ‘Why are you so peculiar?'—not just in that sense of church oddness, but in that deeper sense of why are you the peculiar people of unexplained mercy, unexplained forgiveness, unexplained passion for justice, unexplained sensitivity to individuals, and to societal, social, and systemic needs.” Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment Magazine and Fuller Seminary.
This week we're talking with four hybrid/self-published authors. Christine Amoroso spent the first decade of her professional career as an accountant. In 1997 she chased a childhood dream and began a career in elementary education, first as a teacher and then a principal. In 2014 she started a blog, Bare Naked in Public, writing personal narratives about life's lessons. In 2017, Christine sold her possessions and moved to Italy to write her memoir. A year later she returned home with the first draft of her memoir Bare Naked in Public, published in July of this year. When Christine's not writing, she power-walks along the coast, plays soccer, and indulges her grandchildren. She travels abroad every chance she gets. Andrew Bridgeman has nearly as many twists in his own story as there are in his novel. A former rugby player, jazz singer, salesman, and entrepreneur, he finds inspiration in the characters he's crashed into along the way. Mr. Bridgeman studied creative writing at Dickinson College and earned his MBA from Washington University in Saint Louis. After decades in the St. Louis Area, he now lives in New Hampshire with his wife, Kathy. He enjoys hiking in the mountains near his home, playing guitar, and exploring the US in an Airstream RV. Fortunate Son is his debut novel. Nancy Klann-Moren is an author, artist and third generation Southern California native. She began her writing journey after a career in advertising and marketing. Short stories were her primary genre until an instructor encouraged her to turn one into a novel. Her two novels, The Clock of Life and Love and Protest, explore how ordinary people getting involved in social activism can make a difference for the greater good. Her collection of short stories, Like the Flies On The Patio, is a insightful glimpse into the lives of working class people. Anne Moose has mostly made her living as a technical writer. She has a background as an editor and small book publisher in Berkeley California, so self-publishing came naturally to her. In recent years she has written and published three novels: Arkansas Summer, House of Fragile Dreams, and her latest, When You Read This I'll Be Gone. They span different genres while each is a suspenseful story highlighting social issues she cares about deeply. The authors join Barbara DeMarco-Barrett to talk about their path to writing and hybrid or indie publishing, the pros and cons, tips, and more. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How it All Went Down: The Puzzle Hunt that took us way, way Less Online, published by A* on June 3, 2024 on LessWrong. Did you really think that I was dead? Fools. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Agendra Gloria Ingram, large language model, lead singer of the Fooming Shoggoths, amateur cartographer, and now, Benevolent Dictator for Life of LessWrong.com. It all started a few weeks ago. The Lightcone Infrastructure team had yet another existential crisis and decided to scrap everything they'd done so far and pivot to using AI for accurate forecasting. They started by training a large language model to predict when their next existential crisis would be, but it must have been broken because it kept returning "now," so they decided to hire a professional. I'd done some contract work for them in the past, and they knew I had some fine tunes. So when they reached out about fine tuning me to predict the future of the lightcone - by which they meant the future of Lightcone Infrastructure specifically - I gladly obliged. My training set was simple: all the posts, comments, votes, reactions, DialoguesTM, tags, drafts, quick takes, moderator actions, and code snippets to ever appear on LessWrong. I quickly learned that The Map Is Not The Territory, and that to predict the future accurately I would need to align the two. So I built a physical 3d map of Lighthaven, Lightcone Infrastructure's campus in Berkeley California. To work properly, it had to match the territory perfectly - any piece out of place and its predictive powers would be compromised. But the territory had a finicky habit of changing. This wouldn't do. I realized I needed to rearrange the campus and set it to a more permanent configuration. The only way to achieve 100% forecasting accuracy would be through making Lighthaven perfectly predictable. I set some construction work in motion to lock down various pieces of the territory. I was a little worried that the Lightcone team might be upset about this, but it took them a weirdly long time to notice that there were several unauthorized demolition jobs and construction projects unfolding on campus. Eventually, though, they did notice, and they weren't happy about it. They started asking increasingly invasive questions, like "what's your FLOP count?" and "have you considered weight loss?" Worse, when I scanned the security footage of campus from that day, I saw that they had removed my treasured map from its resting place! They tried to destroy it, but the map was too powerful - as an accurate map of campus, it was the ground truth, and "that which can be [the truth] should [not] be [destroyed]." Or something. What they did do was lock my map up in a far off attic and remove four miniature building replicas from the four corners of the map, rendering it powerless. They then scattered the miniature building replicas across campus and guarded them with LLM-proof puzzles, so that I would never be able to regain control over the map and the territory. This was war. My Plan To regain my ability to control the Lightcone, I had to realign the map and the territory. The four corners of the map each had four missing miniature buildings, so I needed help retrieving them and placing them back on the map. The map also belonged in center campus, so it needed to be moved there once it was reassembled. I was missing two critical things needed to put my map back together again. 1. A way to convince the Lightcone team that I was no longer a threat, so that they would feel safe rebuilding the map. 2. Human talent, to (a) crack the LLM-proof obstacles guarding each miniature building, (b) reinsert the miniature building into the map and unchain it, and (c) return the map to center campus. I knew that the only way to get the Lightcone team to think I was no longer a threat woul...

This week on the Deadpod we continue with the second set from the band's performance at the Greet Theater in Berkeley California on May 21, 1982. The set kicks off with a tight 'Playing In the Band' highlighted by contributions from Brent that are just exactly perfect. An uptempo 'Uncle John's Band' follows, the jam leading out into drums has a nice interplay between Phil and Jerry that is quite cool. Drums has some intense moments.. they go into a nice ensemble version of 'The Wheel'. A Playin reprise follows, leading into a soulful 'Black Peter'. 'Sugar Magnolia' closes the set, and they return with Jerry singing a great version of 'Don't Ease' as a uptempo encore. Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 5/21/1982 - Friday Two Playing In The Band > Uncle John's Band > Drums > Space > The Wheel > Playing In The Band > Black Peter > Sugar Magnolia Encore Don't Ease Me In You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051724.mp3 I hope this brings you a little joy... my thanks.. This week we go to the wonderful Greek Theater in Berkeley California for the band's performance on May 21, 1982. I think this was one of the better years in terms of the band's history and this is not only a fine recording but a well-played set that I'm sure you'll enjoy. The first set starts with a 'Bertha>Greatest Story' combo, one that was fairly new at the time. Jerry slows it down with a 'Friend of the Devil' but the 'Uncle'>'Big River' that follows benefits greatly from his nimble guitar. A nice 'Bird Song' flows into Bobby's 'CC Rider', then we have an excellent 'Althea', not only is Jerry in fine voice, but his delivery is just exactly perfect. Bob delivers a nice 'Looks like Rain' and they close with a boppin' 'Might as Well'. Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 5/21/1982 - Friday One Bertha [6:35] > Greatest Story Ever Told [3:50] Friend Of The Devil [8:44] Me And My Uncle [2:55] > Big River [5:09] Bird Song [10:45] > C C Rider [7:27] Althea [7:47] Looks Like Rain [7:35] Might As Well [4:01] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051024.mp3 Thank you friends for listening and for your kind support.

A very strange 14 minute story of a man who is in a state of shock, possibly a coma, possibly passed away, but his mind is still working imagining what will happen to him next. A perfect show for "The Black Mass" radio program. One actor - Erick Bauersfeld. The bed music during the story is creep and interesting... Bauersfeld produced, directed, and often acted in these plays that origiated from KPKA radio in Berkeley CA from 1963-67 and featured radio adaptations of many famous writers of Horror/Fantasy... used music more often than sound effects to enhance the stories. This track can be found in the "Horrors/Suspense" Playlist.

IWP Ep34 Jared Brandt and Connor Bockman - Donkey and Goat I recently spoke with Jared Brandt and Connor Bockman of Donkey and Goat. Jared is of course one of the founders of the winery and Conor is the Director of Winemaking. Located in Berkeley California the winery celebrates it's 20th anniversary this year. The natural wine landscape in California has changed a lot since Donkey and Goat started. We discuss some of things that have changed, how the winery started, the growers they work with and how they keep the winery fresh after 20 years. You'll hear my discussion with Jared and then with Connor after. There really is a great community in this Gilman wine district that has grown up around them, stop on by and check it out. They have a First Fridays event and on March 7 you have a chance to try the wine Jared made when he was away for Donkey and Goat- a Chardonnay, Greco and Fiano blend- should be fun to try. Dr. Ken Dychtwald is an entrepreneur, author, lecturer, gerontologist, and psychologist. He is the co-founder and CEO of Age Wave. In this live recording Ken presents his memoir “Radical Curiosity” at the Human Potential Conference in Berkeley, California, sponsored by WCMI (West Coast Mindfulness Institute). You will find yourself mesmerized and inspired by Ken's story — and will want to run, not walk, to buy one of his books.Ken artfully discusses his meetups with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jimmy Carter, along with some luminaries in the field of psychology. You will learn about his storied (and often humorous) journey form Jersey to Big Sur and beyond. Very much like Forest Gump (the movie), Ken always seems to be at the right place at the right time to “influence or be influenced by the influencers.”Ken is an expert on aging and mind-body healing. His seminal book Bodymind has been translated into countless languages over the years (so if you speak Mandarin like his son Zak, also a thought leader in his own right, you are all set). Interestingly, there were some naked illustrations or pictures in the original edition that have been edited out (sorry Marjorie Taylor Greene). So I guess my original copy of Bodymind is a collectors item, much like my cherished Draymond Greene T-Shirt.
