It feels like it's time for something new. Facebook and Kanye just changed their names. More than half of Americans want to change jobs, and one-third want to switch careers. Businesses are reinventing the way they operate. And social movements are trying to create new systems that are anti-racist and sustainable. Isn't all this easier said than done? Even after confronting the challenges of the past year and a half, we are finding that our old ways are more deeply entrenched than we expected. What do we need—individually and collectively—to start new chapters and rebuild? Which rituals and practices have societies around the world used to successfully start over? And what sort of new beginning does this current moment require of all of us? Artist and co-founder executive director of Homeboy Art Academy Fabian Debora, TransLatin@ Coalition president and CEO Bamby Salcedo, and UCLA distinguished professor and psychology department chair Annette L. Stanton visited Zócalo to explore the best ways to make a fresh start. This event was streamed live from the ASU California Center in the historic Herald Examiner in Downtown Los Angeles on December 7, 2021 and was moderated by Los Angeles Times columnist Gustavo Arellano. This week we're joined by Bamby Salcedo, founder of the Translatin@ Coalition and one of a number of tireless trans women who fought to get three bills onto Governor Gavin Newsom's desk this month. Bamby shares with us her incredible life story, and how she beat the odds to survive life on the streets, addiction, prison and anti-trans violence to end up where she is today, helping to protect and grow the trans community throughout the world. (For more on Bamby's story, check out the documentary Transvisible: Bamby Salcedo's Story.) She also takes a moment to tell us about three bills that she and a coalition of California trans rights groups fought to get in front of the governor: AB 2218 - The Transgender Wellness and Equity Fund, which would ensure that transgender, gender non-conforming and intersex Californians get the health care and resources that they need. This is a historic bill, as it is the first ever to be designed, organized and championed specifically by trans and gender-nonconforming people. SB 132 - This bill would ensure trans women's safety in prison, allowing them to avoid serving time in men's prisons, where they could be subject to harassment and violence. SB 555 - This would drastically drop the amount of money an inmate in county jail would have to pay to talk with their loved ones over the phone. Bamby urges listeners to contact Governor Newsom and urge him to sign these historic pieces of legislation. We've all experienced the nerves of going to our high school prom. From finding a date to making sure we had the perfect tux or dress, or even planning to "lose" it that night. But some of us never made it to prom, and others like our trans brothers and sisters were not able to attend as their authentic selves. This weekend the first-ever TransInclusive LGBT Prom is happening in South Florida. Organized by Carson Graham of TransInclusive, a Trans Led Action Support Group, their mission, and values are to minimize disparities in healthcare, education, housing and employment opportunities; Lift discrimination and focus on social equality for the LGB(T)Q community. The prom is a fundraiser for the TransInclusive resource center and provides a safe and welcoming event for all LGBTQ and allies to attend. We will also be hearing from Arianna Lint, A Trans Latina and activist and leader of the TransLatina Coalition Chapter and founder of outreach program Arianna's Center. She also began her work with Transgender Latina Leaders or TLC. TLC gathers all over the country donating their time to organize and advocate for the issues and needs of the Trans Latina Community living in the United States. The vision of TransLatin@ Coalition is to amplify education and resources to promote the empowerment of Trans leaders. @RoamFreeWrites @MeetThemMondays www.roamfreewrites.com

The program is conducted in both Spanish and English.  Anthropologists have traced the Meso-American acceptance of people of mixed gender back to pre-Columbian Mexico accounts of Aztec priests and Mayan gods who cross-dressed and were considered both male and female. In the shifting landscape of gender identity, what might we learn from the indigenous Zapotec people of Oaxaca’s isthmus region, who embrace a third gender—the muxe—within their communities? Zackary Drucker, transgender multimedia artist and producer of the Amazon series Transparent moderates a conversation with Victor Cata, Zapotec historian, writer, and linguist; Bamby Salcedo, founder of the Los Angeles-based TransLatin@Coalition, and Maritza Sanchez, Embajadora de los muxes en el exterior (Ambassador of Muxes in the Exterior.) Simultaneous interpretation was provided by Antena Los Ángeles. This program was produced as part of The Getty's Pacific Standard Time: LA/LAinitiative.

Every year, the Loyal Policies of HartLife celebrate Exclusion Day: the day the glorious founders of the Company sealed the tower away from the cold, Wolves, and dangers of the Outside, protecting their Policies from here to eternity.  By Excluding the outside world, Loyal Policies would never be exposed to dangers like Free Thought, New Ideas, or Innovation. This musical episode was recorded live at iO Chicago with Improvised Star Trek on December 18, 2015. We'd like to make a special note here: this Holiday season, the themes of exclusion, refugees, and societal control through xenophobia are everywhere in the news.  We'd like to take the opportunity to raise awareness for several great organizations that are working to provide opportunities and help for refugees in American and around the world. Here in Chicago, we'd recommend supporting RefugeeOne, which you can learn more about at refugeeone.org--they're a great organization dedicated to creating opportunities for refugees fleeing war, terror, and persecution to build new lives of safety, dignity, and self-reliance.   Globally, Doctors without Borders is a fantastic organization, helping  people worldwide where the need is greatest, delivering emergency medical aid to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from health care.  You can find their organization online at doctorswithoutborders.org.    Finally, we recommend supporting the TransLatin@ Coalition, whose mission is to advocate for the specific needs of Trans Latin@ immigrants who reside in the US and plan advocacy strategies that would improve their quality of life.  Support them and learn more at http://www.translatinacoalition.org.
