Growing up in Canada, Linh Nguyen never thought she'd be on the road fighting for the representation and visibility of in American politics. But like most women, she wanted something done, so she did it herself. Rising through the ranks of Democratic politics and movement work, she eventually landed as Executive Vice President and COO of AAPI Victory Fund which focuses on empowering 24 million strong Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders to realize their power. We talked a lot about what she learned and experienced along the way on her professional and personal journey, such as the importance of working with other women of color, being a strong advocate for your community's needs and what happened with the AAPI Vote in the 2024 election.https://www.aapivictoryfund.com/If you enjoyed the show and you want to join our community of other women of color who are embracing their voice head over to https://embracingyourvoicepod.com/Connect with Atima on:InstagramTwitterLinkedin

The numbers tell a powerful story about America and its future. Today, 64 million Latinos, those with multi-generational roots and newcomers, call the United States home. While they are vital contributors to our economy, culture, and civil rights legacy, they are grossly underrepresented (just 2%) in elected office. Latino Victory is the trailblazing nonprofit that is changing the trajectory of Latino electoral power, and it is winning. On this episode of Power Station, Sindy Benavides, President & CEO of Victory Fund, who leads with strategic brilliance and heart, begins the conversation with a staggering statistic. Every 30 seconds a Latino in the United States turns 18. These numbers motivate Latino Victory to empower Latinos across the country with information about everything there is to know about voting and civic engagement. Its 501c4 counterpart elevates the campaigns of an impressive roster of candidates vying for office at the local, state, and federal levels. Latino Victory's founders, Eva Longoria and Henry Muñoz III, stepped up to ensure that the Latino electorate is seen, heard, and engaged. Sindy Benavides and a growing movement for representation are bringing the vision to life.

Discover the vibrant spirit of community and activism as we converse with Poonam Kapoor from the Victory Fund about the exhilarating Sunday Funday event, celebrating and bolstering LGBTQ candidates. We're also joined by Texas Senate hopeful Molly Cook, as she passionately discusses the interplay of social issues from school safety to racial justice. Plus, we take a theatrical detour with the imaginative play 'Aces' and delve into the evolution of 'queer' with Mike Johnson and Kyle Goetz of the Gayish Podcast, revealing how this term shapes identity and experience. My own journey into politics has been driven by an unyielding resolve to ignite change in Austin, anchored by my history of community involvement and legislative accomplishments. I detail the intricate dance of the Texas Two-Step election process, share the impact of local endorsements, and reaffirm my commitment to environmental justice and disability rights. The deeply personal and widely resonant topic of reproductive rights is also at the heart of our discourse, emphasizing the urgency for collective action. As Queer Voices evolves into a home-produced podcast, we ensure the essence of our show remains accessible across platforms. Frequent contributors Andrew Edmondson and Deborah Moncrief-Bell join the fold, and we introduce the News Wrap segment from This Way Out. While maintaining political neutrality, we present unfiltered opinions from our guests and their organizations. And just for kicks, we offer a quirky reminder about podcast usage – all part of another compelling chapter of Queer Voices that's sure to engage your heart and mind.Queer Voices airs in Houston Texas on 90.1FM KPFT and is heard as a podcast here. The Chinese Communist Party's “capture” of American “elites” has decisively helped Beijing wage “unrestricted warfare” against our country for decades. Especially damaging have been its “old friends” in America's financial sector who have underwritten with our money the economic and military build-up of the People's Republic of China. Sequoia Capital's Neil Shen is one such enabler of Chinese hegemonic ambitions. He reportedly is not merely among Beijing's friends. He actually has worked for the regime there, helping it gain potentially decisive advantages by acquiring and developing militarily relevant U.S. technologies. Unfortunately, a promising House Intelligence Committee investigation into such assistance was shut down after Sequoia made large contributions to Kevin McCarthy's Victory Fund. Sounds like another good reason to fire the Speaker. This is Frank Gaffney. Please read The Indictment: Prosecuting the Chinese Communist Party & Friends for Crimes Against America, China and the World.

Annise Parker, President and CEO of the LGBTQ Victory Fund and LGBTQ Victory Institute talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about the importance of endorsing openly LGBTQ political candidates for local, state and federal elective offices. Currently there are 1200 openly LGBTQ people serving in offices across America but we need at least 30,000 to come close to leveling the political scope in this country. The LGBTQ Victory Fund works to achieve this goal and sustain equality by increasing the number of openly LGBTQ elected officials at all levels of government while ensuring they reflect the diversity of those they serve. We all know how successful the religious right has been in stacking the political field against our community. Now is the time to support LGBTQ candidates in their quest to advance our progressive values. To be considered for endorsement by the Victory Fund and Victory Institute candidates must be openly LGBTQ, pro-choice and support an individual's right to privacy. It's also crucial that they support the rights of transgender individuals, demonstrate community support and have a realistic plan to win. Candidates must additionally demonstrate support of federal, state or local efforts to advance LGBTQ civil rights through the legislative or regulatory process and demonstrate support of federal, state or local efforts to safeguard privacy and reproductive freedom. Victory Fund was founded in 1991 by LGBTQ activists and donors who recognized the success of EMILY's List at attracting attention and support for women candidates for public office and applied the success of this model to advance equality for our LGBTQ community. We talked to Annise about what she hopes to accomplish at the Victory Fund and her spin on our LGBTQ issues. Annise Parker is the first former elected official to lead the Victory Fund and Victory Institute after serving six years as a Houston City Council member, six years as City Controller and six years as Mayor of Houston becoming the first openly LGBTQ mayor of a major American city. In the private sector Annise spent 20 years working in the oil and gas industry including 18 years with Mosbacher Energy Company. She also co-owned “Inklings” a lesbian/feminist bookstore for 10 years. Mayor Parker and her wife Kathy Hubbard have been together since 1991 and are advocates for adoption with three daughters, a son and three grandchildren. Today's "activism" is essentially a process of expressing collective community grievances and disgust, feeling there's either no control over situations or even how to react. Or hope that someone else will do it. Well, there's no someone else. Nor is there a blueprint for creating change. It's simple: "get out" and make sure every voter is informed on our issues and registered to vote. If there's a message that we believe, it is "Don't worry about rocking the boat because you are not in the boat, so rock it as hard and as often as you can." If you don't feel the wall at your back now, you should.instagram: @waybourninstagram: @fallingoutlgbtqpodtwitter: @fallinglgbtq

I think it's safe to say that the politics of the past several years has made us cynical. That's definitely been my experience. But recently, I attended a fundraiser for an organization called the Service First Women's Victory Fund. They are on “campaign to elevate the collective voice of elected women leaders who have dedicated their lives to serving our country and who know what it means to put service and country over partisan politics. Together, we are building a new normal where service leaders and women lead the way in Congress.” https://www.servicefirstwomensvictoryfund.com/ Friends, they renewed my faith. And today, I have two incredible congresswomen who represent the fund to talk to us. You are about to meet Representative Chrissy Houlahan, who serves Pennsylvania's 6th district and Representative Abigail Spanberger, who serves Virginia's 7th district. Get ready for a dose of inspiration, and a VERY renewed sense of urgency to get involved in our very fragile democracy.
Dennis connects via Zoom with filmmaker Jesse Moss, the director of the new Amazon documentary Mayor Pete, about the history-making presidential campaign of openly gay South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg. Jesse talks about how he came to make the movie, how keeping up with Pete and the campaign was like being on The Amazing Race, how Pete and Chasten's love story became the center of the film, Pete's chemistry with Joe Biden on the trail and the jolt of energy outspoken Communications Director Lis Smith brought to the campaign and the documentary. Other topics include: Pete's famous “Take a pill to make myself not gay” Victory Fund speech, seeing trauma and hope in the faces of voters on the trail, the sweet Chasten moment that ended up on the cutting room floor and Jesse's conflicted feelings around Pete's campaign song “High Hopes."
Katie Kalvoda, Board Member of AAPI Victory Fund and AAPI Victory Alliance, joins Kelly to discuss the California gubernatorial recall election and how Asian American voters can shape the outcome.

Recently we spoke with The Victory Fund – a fundraising organisation dedicated to getting more LGBTIQ people elected to parliaments across the USA. As we learned about this fascinating organisation,... LEARN MORE The post USA: LGBTIQ Representation in Parliaments appeared first on World Wide Wave.
On this episode my guest is Brian Bond, Executive Director of PFLAG, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, the first and largest organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, their parents, families, and allies. With over 400 chapters and 200,000 members and supporters crossing multiple generations of families in major urban centers, small cities, and rural areas across America, Brian leads PFLAG providing support and initiatives to ensure the equality of LGBTQIA persons. Brian is no stranger to being front and center on positions of what some people would identify as controversial, but instead of sidestepping these initiatives he finds himself embracing the opportunities. It's doubtful Brian had much of a choice considering his mother was a notable leader in the Missouri Democratic party and he himself came out publicly to his parents in high school launching him on a path of leadership that he continues forward with to this day. Brian was the former executive director of the Victory Fund, the executive director of the Democratic National Committee Gay and Lesbian Leadership Fund, the National Constituency Director of Obama For America and the Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison during the Obama Administration. Anyone in the LGBTQIA community in the United States would be hard pressed not to have benefitted from the life long dedication to equality that Brian has been committed to his entire adult life. https://pflag.org
This week on the Carolina Snowflake Podcast we're joining the masses in celebration of Pride Month! Tune in to this week's casual conversation with more than a few funny quips as we talk about our own positions as allies in the LGBTQ+ world. Hear how we first learned that our hetero-normative selves weren't the only way to be and what that meant growing up in the deep red south. We also discuss some of our favorite LGBTQ+ celebrities, authors and journalists this week and relay how these individuals have shaped our own understandings of what being gay or lesbian or trans or just plain different means in the grand scheme of things. We also pose a handful of questions to the LGBTQ+ community and hope that maybe we'll get a few answers. At the end of the day, we say love is love. The Carolina Snowflakes fully support your right to be who you are and to love who you choose. We had a blast recording Our Big Gay Episode and we hope you enjoy! Former Houston Mayor Annise Parker and Graphic Novel author Mike CuratoWe speak with former Houston mayor Annise Parker who is now president and CEO of the LGBTQ Victory Fund. LGBTQ Victory Fund works to achieve and sustain equality by increasing the number of openly LGBTQ elected officials at all levels of government while ensuring they reflect the diversity of those they serve. Since 1991, Victory Fund has helped elect thousands of LGBTQ people to positions at all levels of government. These LGBTQ voices have made significant contributions to advancing equality for LGBTQ Americans – from passing non-discrimination laws to defeating amendments to ban marriage equality.GUEST: Annise Parkerhttps://victoryfund.orgThen, we speak with author Mike Curato about his book "Flamer". Mike has just released his debut Young Adult graphic novel, FLAMER (Macmillan, 09/01/2020), a coming-of-age story that confronts ideas of racism, homophobia, body image and coming to terms with identity in every sense of the word. Curato's YA graphic novel follows 14-year-old Aiden Navarro who navigates friendships, deals with bullies, and spends time with Elias (a boy he can't stop thinking about), as he finds himself on a path of self-discovery and acceptance. Unfolding over the course of the last week of Boy Scout camp in 1995, Aiden's story is heavily inspired by Mike's own experience coming out as a teenager. It's about how young men are indoctrinated into a culture of toxic masculinity, how faith and scouting intersect with queer identity, and how friendships can devolve into bullying. This book also is a contributor to a much-needed conversation about how we can better support LGBTQIA+ youth. A disturbing recent survey released by the Trevor Project and reported on by NPR notes that 40% of LGBTQ people have considered suicide in the last year; that rises to more than half for trans and non-binary youth. One of the most heartbreaking scenes in FLAMER deals with suicide ideation as the main character considers taking his life. This book can serve as a road map for teens dealing with bullying in their friend groups and at home and Mike speaks incredibly well to these subjects.GUEST: Mike Curatohttps://www.mikecurato.com/flamer

Then, we get down to business, talking about contemplated cuts to U.S. Special Forces in Africa and the Niger report, the impact of trade tariffs on America's alliances in the world, and news that Facebook had partnerships with 60 device makers involve data-sharing. Sarah shares a quick update on the Supreme Court's decision in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case. To celebrate Pride Month, we're highlighting the accomplishments of LGBTQ leaders every Tuesday. Today, we feature Annise Parker, former mayor of Houston and President and CEO of the Victory Fund. It’s an oddity about covering President Trump’s potential conflicts of interest: certain names keeping coming up. For example, Elliott Broidy. In April, the Republican National Committee announced the appointment of three national deputy finance chairmen: President Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen, North Carolina businessman Louis DeJoy and Broidy. What went unnoted, according to a search of stories published at that time, was that Broidy had pled guilty eight years earlier in a pay-to-play scheme involving public pension investments. Broidy’s 2009 guilty plea was spectacular news: then-New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo had caught former New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi in a kickback scheme involving the state’s retirement fund for public sector workers. According to his guilty plea, Broidy gave Hevesi $1 million in gifts “as a reward for giving preferential treatment” to Broidy’s investment fund, Markstone Capital Partners. As Cuomo described it, Broidy paid for five personal trips for Hevesi and his family to places like Israel and Italy — trips that included airfare, luxury hotel suites and a helicopter tour. Broidy even invested in an obscure movie called Chooch produced by a pension official’s brother. In 2012, a judge reduced his felony plea to a misdemeanor after he repaid $18 million to the state. Broidy also left Markstone. He currently runs his own firm, Broidy Capital. We were reminded of Broidy’s run-ins with the while we were reporting about the CIM Group, a Los Angeles-based private equity firm that has played a key role in real estate deals involving Donald Trump and his son-in-law, and now White House adviser, Jared Kushner. CIM handles investments from public pension funds: Reuters reported that at least seven state pensions have provided money to the company. When New York officials were investigating the pay-to-play scheme in their state, Broidy was also a member of the city of Los Angeles Fire and Police Pension Board. According to a Los Angeles Times investigation, Broidy voted to invest $30 million of pension funds with CIM, without disclosing that his own private equity fund had received $500,000 from the firm. The Securities and Exchange Commission investigated Broidy for fraud in California. As part of that investigation, court records show, the SEC asked Broidy to disclose his communications with CIM. In a statement issued to WNYC after publication of this article, an attorney for CIM said, "To the best of CIM's knowledge, it has never been investigated by the SEC for fraud nor was it the subject of any SEC investigation into matters related to Mr. Broidy." Broidy was not sanctioned for his actions in California. Several years later, Broidy is now one of the most significant fundraisers for the Republican National Committee. He was a major fundraiser for Trump’s inaugural committee. And during the presidential campaign, he raised money for Trump’s Victory Fund, a joint Trump/RNC fundraising committee. This places Broidy, once convicted of bribing government officials to enrich his own company, in the position of soliciting giant donations for Republican causes and candidates. The inaugural committee, which is separate from the RNC and the presidential campaign, broke records for fundraising. According to an analysis by the nonpartisan OpenSecrets.org, most of the $107 million raised came from industries that stand to gain from Trump administration priorities. Asked about Broidy’s previous role in the pay-to-play prosecution in New York and his current role as a political fundraiser, a spokesman declined to comment. Ryan Mahoney, a spokesman for the RNC said, “This is well documented and in the past. There's a point at which somebody has paid their debt to society and Elliott has done that.” Editor's note: This story has been updated from its original version to more clearly describe the Securities and Exchange Commission's investigation and to include a statement from CIM’s attorney concerning the investigation.
Margaret Cho was born Dec. 5, 1968 and raised in San Francisco. “It was different than any other place on Earth,” she says. “I grew up and went to grammar school on Haight Street during the ’70s. There were old hippies, ex-druggies, burnouts, drag queens, and Chinese people. To say it was a melting pot – that’s the least of it. It was a really confusing, enlightening, wonderful time.” Ignoring the traditions of her patriarchal culture, her mother bravely resisted an arranged marriage in Korea and married Margaret’s father a Korean joke book writer. “Books like 1001 Jokes for Public Speakers – real corny stuff,” Cho says. “I guess we’re in the same line of work. But we don’t understand each other that way. I don’t understand why the things he says are funny and the same for him.” What Margaret did know is that being a kid was hard. Racing toward adulthood as fast as she could to escape the constant bullying she endured, Margaret began writing jokes at 14 and professionally performing at age 16. Getting picked on, and not having a feeling of belonging, is a subject that’s not only near to Margaret’s heart, but something she still feels very deeply despite all of her successes. In that sense, Margaret has gladly and graciously become the “Patron Saint for Outsiders,” speaking for those who are not able to speak for themselves, and encouraging people who can to use their voice to promote change.Soon after starting her Stand Up career, Margaret won a comedy contest where first prize was opening for Jerry Seinfeld. She moved to Los Angeles in the early ’90s and, still in her early twenties, hit the college circuit, where she immediately became the most booked act in the market and garnered a nomination for “Campus Comedian of The Year.” She performed over 300 concerts within two years. Arsenio Hall introduced her to late night audiences, Bob Hope put her on a prime time special and, seemingly overnight, Margaret Cho became a national celebrity. Her groundbreaking, controversial, and short-lived ABC sitcom, All-American Girl (1994) soon followed. Oddly, while chosen because of who she was – a non-conformist Korean American woman with liberal views – the powers-that-be decided they preferred for Margaret to “tone it down” for the show. She soon realized that though she was an Executive Producer, this would be a battle she could not win. “For fear of being too “ethnic,” the show got so watered down for television that by the end, it was completely lacking in the essence of what I wanted to accomplish.” The experience was a traumatic one, bringing up unresolved feelings left over from childhood, and Margaret developed an eating disorder as a response to criticism about her body. She was so obsessive in her goal to try to be what she thought others wanted, that she landed in the hospital with kidney failure. Through out this period of self-abuse, Margaret continued performing to sold-out audiences in comedy clubs, theaters, and college campuses, working to channel her anger in to something more positive. In 1999, her groundbreaking, off Broadway one-woman show, I’m The One That I Want, toured the country to national acclaim and was made into a best-selling book and feature film of the same name. After her experience with All-American Girl, Margaret wanted to make sure she would only ever have to answer to herself, putting herself in charge of the distribution and sales of her film, which garnered incredible reviews and broke records for ‘Most Money Grossed per Print’. In 2001, after the success of her first tour, Maragaret launched Notorious C.H.O., a smash-hit 37-city national tour that culminated in a sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall. Notorious C.H.O., hailed by the New York Times as “Brilliant,” was recorded and released as a feature film. Both films were acquired by Showtime, and produced by Margaret’s production company, a testament to the success of Margaret’s business model. In March of 2003, Margaret embarked on her third sold-out national tour, Revolution. It was heralded by the Chicago Sun Times as “Her strongest show yet” and the CD recording was nominated for a Grammy for Comedy Album of the Year. In 2005, she released Assassin, with The Chicago Tribune stating “(Assassin) packs passion in to each punch.” The concert film premiered in select theatres and on the gay and lesbian premium channel Here! TV. In 2007, Margaret hit the road with Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry and Erasure, along with indie faves The Dresden Dolls and The Cliks, to host the True Colors Tour, benefiting the Human Rights Campaign. An entertainment pioneer, Margaret also created and starred in The Sensuous Woman, a live variety show featuring vaudevillian burlesque and comedy, which she took for an extended off-Broadway run in the fall. Margaret returned to TV in 2008 with the VH1 series, The Cho Show. Describing it as a ‘reality sitcom,’ Margaret said at the time, “It’s the closest I’ve been able to come on television to what I do as a comic.” The Cho Show followed Margaret, her real parents, and her eccentric entourage through a series of bold and outrageous experiences, shaped by Margaret’s ‘anything goes’ brand of stand-up. The aptly titled Beautiful came next, exploring the good, bad and ugly in beauty, and the marketers who shape our world. The concert premiered in Australia at The Sydney Theater, marking the first time Margaret debuted a tour abroad. While touring through the US, the concert was filmed at the Long Beach theatre, aired as a special on Showtime in 2009, and then released as both a DVD and a book. In 2009 Margaret nabbed a starring role in the comedy/drama series Drop Dead Diva, which aired for six seasons on the Lifetime network. Margaret enjoyed not having the sole responsibility for keeping things afloat. “(Drop Dead Diva) was a very fulfilling experience. It let me taking about the things I talk about, like body image, and women feeling good about themselves.” Never one to shy away from a challenge, Margaret stepped right up to the plate when asked to do Season 11 of the highly- rated Dancing with the Stars. Paired with pro Louie Van Amstel, Margaret was on the show’s most controversial seasons. Margaret got a very strong reaction to her Rainbow Dancing Dress during a time when the issue of bullying, especially among gay teens, was being heavily covered in the media. “I am very proud to have been able to wear a gay pride dress on a show that is so conservative.” 2010 culminated with another high honor, a second Grammy Award nomination for Comedy Album of the Year for Cho Dependent, her incredibly funny collection of music. Featuring collaborations with Fiona Apple, Andrew Bird, Grant Lee Phillips, Tegan & Sara, Ben Lee and more, the album received critical acclaim. The album is funny, but also quite musical, featuring not only her surprisingly strong singing voice, but her skill on the guitar, banjo and dulcimer. “I was inspired to make beautiful music with a comic edge. I took this very seriously, taking vocal and guitar lessons while I was touring.” Margaret self released Cho Dependent on her own Clownery Records, and was encouraged by the acclaim, since there are only a handful of artists putting out true albums of comedy music – “Weird” Al Yankovic, Flight of the Conchords, The Lonely Island, to name a few – yet no women. In 2011, Margaret released the live concert film of Cho Dependent, which also had its cable network debut on Showtime. Shot at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA, she remained uncensored, with a characteristically no-holds-barred show. In 2012, Margaret spent whatever free time she had crafting her all new standup show, the uproariously and aptly named MOTHER, which kicked off with both a US and European tour. According to Margaret, “MOTHER offers up an untraditional look at motherhood and how we look at maternal figures and strong women in queer culture.” Margaret’s creative side moved ahead at full speed with an Emmy nomination for “Best Guest Performance” on Thirty Rock. After the death of her mentor, Robin Williams, overwhelmed her, a mutual friend told her not to grieve Robin, but to ‘Be Robin’. The hashtag #BeRobin was born, as Margaret began setting up shop in different places around San Francisco in an effort to raise money for the Homeless community. “All I do and create a distraction – comedy and music – for several hours and collect goods and donations for people who need them.” The GoFundMe page Margaret set up [at http://GoFundMe.com/BeRobin ] has raised over $20,000.00 in donations. In 2015, Margaret was one of the hosts of TLC’s All About SEX, a late night call-in talk show with Margaret covering sex toys and alternative sexuality. “I wanted to remove the stigma of women not only buying sex toys, but experimenting with what makes them feel good.”2015 also brought Margaret back to the stand up stage, where she filmed her Showtime special/DVD psyCHO at the historic Gramercy Theatre in New York City. Called “wildly kinetic” by the New York Times, psyCHO “Is about insanity, about the anger I feel about everything happening in the world, from police brutality to racism to the rising tide of violence against women.” In keeping with the show’s theme, the artwork, a portrait she commissioned from artist Vincent Castiglia made entirely of her own blood. There’s no break for Margaret in 2016: The three-time Grammy and Emmy nominee will release her next studio album, American Myth, on April 29th on her Clownery label. The follow up to Cho Dependent, it’s the first collection of new music from Margaret in 6 years. She has already debuted three music videos: “Ron’s Got a DUI” [https://goo.gl/8j3SgH], “Fat Pussy” [https://goo.gl/B6rfER] and the song that set the Internet on its ass (take that, Kardashians), “(I Want To) Kill My Rapist” [https://goo.gl/SMuKhA]. Salon magazine called the song “A new anthem” and UK’s The Guardian reminded anyone who was offended that “Cho is famed for her boldness, her taboo-breaking humour.” Margaret spoke to Billboard about the song saying, “I’m a victim, and now a survivor, of sexual abuse and rape, and I think it’s really hard to talk about it. I think having a song to perform live will allow others to talk about it. It’s a huge issue, and this was cathartic for me.” American Myth, made with her longtime collaborator Garrison Starr, also showcases Margaret’s first efforts as a composer. Margaret says the album is “my glamorous and glittering tribute to family, comedy, anger, fame, gayness, grief, fat pride, love and hate.” In what is a fitting tribute, Margaret has also been named special co-host of E!’s Fashion Police, covering the biggest award shows of 2016. Since Joan Rivers was not only a friend, but also a vocal supporter of Margaret, this has a unique significance. “Although I am not quite a fashionista, I would love to look at it like I am changing it up – Fashion Police: Special Victims Unit. It makes me happiest to spend time with Melissa (Rivers), and when I see her laugh at my jokes, I feel like Joan is smiling.” And in typical “go-go-go” style, Margaret has signed on to develop a “Highland,” a dramedy for Amazon. The hour long show follows Margaret, who after court-0rdered rehab, gets a chance to start over by moving in with her (dysfunctional) family who run a pot dispensary. Co-created by Margaret and writer Liz Sarnoff (“Deadwood,” “Lost,” “Alcatraz”) Margaret is set to star and executive produce as well. With so much success in her artistic life, Margaret has never turned away from the causes that are important to her. She is incredibly active in anti-racism, anti-bullying, advocating for the homeless and gay rights campaigns, and has been recognized for her unwavering dedication. She was the recipient of the Victory Fund’s Leadership Award and the first-ever Best Comedy Performance Award at the 2007 Asian Excellence Awards. She also received the First Amendment Award from the ACLU of Southern California, and the Intrepid Award from the National Organization for Women (NOW). Margaret has been honored by GLAAD, American Women in Radio and Television, the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), PFLAG and LA Pride, who gave Margaret a Lifetime Achievement Award for leaving a lasting imprint on the LGBT community. Through her hard work, Margaret has had the opportunity to be heard, to extend her point of view and become regarded as a true pioneer in her field. She takes none of it for granted. “It’s a wonderful thing to be known as a ‘safe haven’ for people. People come to see me, or buy my records and/or DVDs because my point of view satisfies a lot of what needs to be said out there. More than anything, that makes me really proud.” Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/officialmargaretcho Margaret’s Official YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/mcho88 Twitter: http://twitter.com/margaretcho/ Official Website:http://www.margaretcho.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/margaret_cho/

David Sedaris never liked Chinese food. Then he went to China, and he really didn’t like Chinese food. His essay about it, Chicken Toenails, Anyone? was published in the Guardian and was criticized as disrespectful, xenophobic, and even racist. This week we listen back to our chat with Sedaris, from when he’d just released his book, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls. He said if he were worried about keeping his humor PC he couldn’t be an honest about his experiences, and wouldn’t get as many laughs. “I always figure that the thing you can admit that’s most embarrassing is the thing that most people can relate to,” he explained. “Because we’re not that different, really.” We asked whether he considers himself an LGBTQ activist. He told us, “the way I write about my relationship is just about trying to make a life with somebody, and anybody can relate to it. It’s not important that I’m trying to make that life with another man. It’s just important that I’m trying to make that life with another person.” We also spoke more broadly about his life and work, LGBTQ visibility in pop culture, why speech therapy classes are full of gay children, and whether marriage equality will lead to an increase in annoying destination weddings. “I think gay people should get the right to marry,” he said. “And then I think none of us should act on it.” And last week we told you that friend to the show Aisha Moodie-Mills was named Executive Director of the Victory Fund. This week we bring you an excerpt of our conversation with her, and her wife Danielle Moodie-Mills.
This week we introduce you to a new member of the WFPL newsroom, political reporter Ashley Lopez. Ashley joins us to talk about Indiana's controversial "religious freedom" act, Louisville's attempt to appeal to LGBT tourists, and a recent poll showing Kentucky's opposition to marriage equality. We also hear Ashley's recent report on the Kentucky marriage equality case that will go before the Supreme Court late next month. She fills us in on where that case stands, who might make oral arguments, what experts think will be the outcome, and she introduces us to some of the Kentucky plaintiffs. And a group of Louisvillians are bringing a Juneteenth Festival back to the Derby City for the first time in years. Juneteenth celebrates the freeing of enslaved Africans and African Americans in the United States in 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation became the law of the land. Organizer Gary Brice takes a break from festival planning to stop by the Strange Fruit studios and let us know what's in store for festival attendees, and how our listeners can get involved. This week we also give a shout out to friend-to-the-show Aisha Moodie-Mills, who this week was named the new president and CEO of the Victory Fund, a national organization that supports LGBTQ political candidates. Moodie-Mills is the first woman, and the first African American, to hold the job. And our colleague Devin Katayama, political reporter and midday host with WFPL, is heading to KQED in San Francisco, to cover poverty and other issues affecting Oakland, California. Finally this week we say a sad goodbye to teen trans activist Blake Brockington, who ended his own life last week. Despite suffering rejection from family and friends upon coming out as trans, Brockington went on to become homecoming king at his North Carolina high school. Brockington was a tireless fundraiser and activist for LGBTQ issues, and was also an outspoken participant in the #BlackLivesMatter movement against police brutality. If you or someone you know is struggling or in a crisis, please reach out to The Trevor Project's Lifeline at 866-488-7386, or visit thetrevorproject.org for more ways to contact their counselors, who are specially trained to help LGBTQ youth. Stay safe, Fruitcakes.
