When the Entrepreneur stops by a hypergiant star, they get to know a gregarious alien species that's very generous with their tech. But when the two captains take a field trip and Tucker goes rouge with a Vissian, the implications for First Contact put everyone on the edge. How high can the writers' room count? Immigrants to the US can now decide they are not female or male, but a third unspecified gender when applying for citizenship. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services revised its N-400 Application for Naturalization form to provide applicants with the option of selecting “another gender identity” labeled “X,” it announced on Monday. “Historically USCIS forms and associated documents have only offered two gender options, ‘Male (M) and Female (F).' This has created significant barriers for requesters who do not identify with either of those options,” immigration officials said in a news release. “Limiting benefit requesters to two gender options also creates administrative challenges for USCIS when we receive birth certificates or other official government-issued documents with a gender other than M or F.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

Did Ancient Cultures Believe in a “Third Gender”?

The BreakPoint Podcast

An argument cited often by propagators of transgender ideology is that ancient cultures across the world recognized so-called “third genders,” those who did not fit neatly in categories of male or female. If they recognized this, the argument goes, then so should we.   The latest video in the What Would You Say? series engages this claim carefully, refuting it with three simple points. It begins by explaining the roots of the argument:  "According to advocates of transgender ideology, because so many ancient cultures recognized 'third' genders, we should reject the 'gender binary,' the idea that only two genders exist, and we should reject the notion that gender is essentially linked to one's biological sex. …   Among the most cited examples of 'third genders' are the Native American 'Two-spirit,' Thailand's 'Kathoey' (a word regularly translated as 'Ladyboy'), the 'Sal-zikrum' of Ancient Middle East, the 'Fa'afafine' of Samoa, the 'Hijra' of India, and the 'Muxe' of Southern Mexico."  If a handful of people throughout all human history and culture are proof that biological sex is fake, what do we make of the fact that the rest of the world throughout all human history and culture knew that biological sex was real? To suggest these cultures' understanding of “gender” bore any resemblance to today's transgenderism is to impose our culture's categories on theirs. I believe the term for this is “cultural appropriation.”  "The label 'third gender' is an anachronism forced upon people who actually presumed the reality of biological sex, gender roles, and the so-called 'gender binary.' For example, the word 'Fa'afafine,' used in Samoan culture, means 'in the manner of women.' In Samoan culture, a Fa'afafine was chosen by his family at a young age to help his mother with household tasks, often because the family had no daughters. This boy was not considered a wife or mother but was assigned responsibilities often performed by women."  In other words, the Samoans and similar cultures have never claimed that young boys who might perform stereotypically “female” duties at home are actually female.   But even if that were their claim, it leaves open the central question Matt Walsh dedicated an entire documentary to asking: What is a woman? That unanswered question is at the heart of a modern contradiction.    "Like these so-called 'third genders,' modern transgender ideology also relies on the 'gender binary' that it claims to reject."  "At its root, the modern concept that someone can be 'transgender' or “born into the wrong body,” depends heavily on rigid male and female stereotypes. If a little girl likes trucks or short hair or dislikes dresses, she must be a boy. If a boy likes pink or dressing up or playing house, he is really a girl. In other words, transgender ideology contradicts itself, promoting the very male and female stereotypes it claims to overcome."  Incoherence aside, capital-T Truth exists, regardless of which people-groups throughout history believed in it. So, even if ancient cultures did believe modern ideas about women, gender, or sex, that does not make their ideas any more true or any less absurd.  "Ancient cultures didn't always get it right. While some ancient cultures allowed or even expected some men to act like women, and vice-versa, many others didn't. To assume that only those cultures got it right is to make what is known as the 'noble savage' mistake. Imagine someone suggesting that because some cultures allowed slavery or cannibalism, we should too. That would be outrageous!"  A Christian worldview is big enough to handle the biological realities of male and female, while also allowing for and celebrating the beautiful variety of individual men and women.  "While the roles of males and females look different from one culture to the next, the biological reality that humans are male and female does not. That's been obvious in every culture until ours, and Genesis tells us why:  Because 'God created man in his own image, in the image of God He created him. Male and female He created them.'" When the British ruled the subcontinent, one of their preferred methods of control was classification; they grouped and categorized people, reducing them inside their boxes. However, the British were not able to define the Hijra community into a category and that caused the British see them as threat. So what solution did the British come up with? If you do experience any of these, please seek help in one of the following organisations:For the UK listeners: www.switchboard.lgbt | 0300 330 0630www.samaritans.org | Tel: 116 123www.sane.org.uk | 0300 304 7000For the US listeners:www.mhanational.org | 1-800-985-5990www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org | 1-800-273-8255The word “transgender” – or trans – is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity is different from the sex assigned to them at birth. Although the word “transgender” and our modern definition of it only came into use in the late 20th century, people who would fit under this definition have existed in every culture throughout recorded history. The trans community is incredibly diverse. Some trans people identify as trans men or trans women, while others may describe themselves as non-binary, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, agender, bigender or other identities that reflect their unique personal experience. Some take hormones or have surgery and transition medically, while others may change pronouns and appearance and transition socially. While trans people are increasingly visible in both popular culture and in daily life, they still face severe discrimination, stigma and systemic inequality. Some of the specific issues facing the trans community are: lack of legal protection, poverty, stigma and discrimination, violence, lack of healthcare coverage and others. This is an important story to be told and heard as part of the LGBTQ+ History Month, the upcoming International Women's Day and as part of every day conversations, as these conversations need to be normalised. On this episode you will hear:1) Third Gender recognition - is that the ultimate goal?2) Do LGBTQ+ Youth need to be protected from themselves?3) The societal gender norms and language we use4) Corporate D&I: Are you doing it for PR or social justice?5) Being a trans allyLiked the conversation? We're officially back with new episodes! This week we gotta talk about sexuality... As two cisgender women we felt this was an important topic to discuss to help normalize these conversations amongst people who identify within in the gender binary. In this episode we discuss: - The history of the gender binary and gender roles in the Black American, Caribbean, and South Asian community - How certain "fluid" aesthetics are only praised if they aren't seen on an lgbtq+ person of color - Our personal experience with the gender binary and exploring our sexuality as two women of color Articles referenced in this episode: Indigenous Sexualities - https://www.e-ir.info/2019/08/20/indigenous-sexualities-resisting-conquest-and-translation/India before the binary - https://www.brownpundits.com/2020/06/10/india-before-the-binary/Third Gender - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_genderWe have a new podcast format of discussing one topic per episode along with a new intro. Belgium plans to introduce the letter “X” as a third gender on official documents, along with male or female.  The country’s new coalition government has pledged to be more inclusive since coming to office last month.   Rather than being forced to pick between male or female, citizens could instead pick the letter X on their birth certificates and identity cards, under the proposed new rules.  Is this the way of the future?   What do you think about Belgium’s decision?  Andrea was joined by Sam Blanckensee and Noah Halpin to discuss. Tae Ateh and Izzy Collie-Cousins respond to a pair of photographs at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (MAA). The studio photographs were taken in Samoa in the 1870s. The subject is unknown: the photographer's labels say "man from Tutuila with hair bound [and] unbound". They write, "This is a compilation of responses to the blatant colonial perspective that governs British museums, particularly those of anthropology and ethnography. It incorporates the political struggle for repatriation, personal poetic responses, and the reflections of an inexperienced observer. Neither of us are experts, and this is part of the problem. For real change to be affected, museums will have to employ academic experts to begin rectifying institutional imbalances, not merely open the floor to the concerned public. The sensory overload of multiple overlapping voices recalls the overload of information in museums, and the struggle of any one visitor to decipher the information that confronts them. We wanted to further platform the call for the decolonisation of museums, and chose this work because it directly demonstrates the othering of indigenous people by the western spectator. We both responded independently to the work, then combined our responses with the responses of decolonial protestors and specialists. Museums should approach these objects differently by highlighting the formal characteristics and provenance of the works that demonstrate the colonial, orientalist perspective they promote. Furthermore, museums should pay close attention to the ways photographic or artistic subjects present themselves in this work. It is clearly known by MAA curators that this person is fa'afine (roughly translating to Third Gender) - therefore, titling them a 'man' is incorrect. While acknowledging that the photographer and collector did not acknowledge this person's gender presentation as being outside of the binary is important, it is also essential to accurately and respectfully present this person as they present themselves. Moreover, museums should employ non-white experts to write on and curate their collections." Anita Herle, Senior Curator at MAA, writes, "This pair of 1870s studio photographs of an anonymous person from Samoa were put on display at MAA earlier this year as part of the University of Cambridge Museums' Bridging Binaries tours. Our understanding that this unknown and unheard person was likely a fa'afafine was based on conversations with Samoan researchers working with the collections at MAA. The invitation to assist with untangling the complex colonial context of these images has provoked a powerful and multi-layered response calling for the decolonisation of museums. It forcefully reminds us that there is a long way to go and that we need to work together both inside and outside the Museum. MAA has been working closely with numerous descendant communities from around the world for over two decades. We need to extend this work and make it more visible to multiple museum audiences. The employment of BIPOC researchers has been crucial to our work, but unfortunately it has been limited to temporary contracts. There needs to be more opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to have secure employment in museums and across the university. We are working with colleagues across the University and more widely across the museums sector to understand how we can address this. The response is also a welcome reminder of the need to be careful with language when presenting historical material. While MAA's label text uses gender neutral language when describing this person, the quotation marks around the historic title have disappeared in your reading and instead the title has re-enforced the very stereotypes that the display question. I am grateful for the heartfelt response. Your comments will inform a re-writing of this and other display labels and encourage MAA to take a stronger stance in support of decolonisation."

"Cogenitor".   Gender: a word that seems simple at first, and in days past had a limited definition. But as with all language, the meanings of words change with use and context. Dictionary.com defines gender (in relation to life forms, and not grammar) as: 1. either the male or female division of a species, especially as differentiated by social and cultural roles and behavior:the feminine gender. 2. a similar category of human beings that is outside the male/female binary classification and is based on the individual's personal awareness or identity. Enterprise's twenty-second episode of season two dives into this construct called gender, and could arguably be the most important episode of the series. At the time of airing, it was considered very forward-thinking; today, it could be considered eerily prescient.  In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala and Brandi Jackola are joined by special guests Dan Deevy of Gaaays in Spaaace and Barry DeFord of Politreks to tackle the episode "Cogenitor". They discuss friendly encounters, the difference between gender and sex, Andorians mating in fours, imposing human cultural values on another civilizations, necessity bringing about change, and whether they think Archer was right to deny asylum to the cogenitor. But when I wrote this piece, some 12 years ago, this was not so much in the news. The program is conducted in both Spanish and English.  Anthropologists have traced the Meso-American acceptance of people of mixed gender back to pre-Columbian Mexico accounts of Aztec priests and Mayan gods who cross-dressed and were considered both male and female. In the shifting landscape of gender identity, what might we learn from the indigenous Zapotec people of Oaxaca’s isthmus region, who embrace a third gender—the muxe—within their communities? Zackary Drucker, transgender multimedia artist and producer of the Amazon series Transparent moderates a conversation with Victor Cata, Zapotec historian, writer, and linguist; Bamby Salcedo, founder of the Los Angeles-based TransLatin@Coalition, and Maritza Sanchez, Embajadora de los muxes en el exterior (Ambassador of Muxes in the Exterior.) Simultaneous interpretation was provided by Antena Los Ángeles. This program was produced as part of The Getty's Pacific Standard Time: LA/LAinitiative.
