Like a lot of kids, Dominic DiFranzo spent loads of time on the internet when he was growing up. Pretty soon, the web itself captivated him–how it worked technologically, and eventually, how people built online communities. Today, he researches how to make the internet more “pro-social,” and a safer space for kids, older adults, and really, for all of us. An apology is one thing, but now the NDP wants to see action. Last week, provincial Justice Minister John Hogan was in the spotlight for comments he made in March about the treatment of sexual assault survivors in the criminal justice system. Hogan had said it was "impossible" for lawyers to re-traumatize sexual assault victims in the courtroom. He was responding to a petition presented by New Democratic Party MHA Lela Evans, asking for changes in how lawyers interact with witnesses in sexual assault cases. Minister Hogan has since apologized for his comments and has acknowledged that aspects of the justice system – including lawyers' behavior – can cause additional harm to survivors. The NDP says it wants to see the Minister use his position to make changes to the system, and Evans spoke with us.

Guest:  Brandon Evans, Infosec Consultant and Certified Instructor and Course Author at SANS Topics: What got you interested in security and motivated you to make this your area of focus? You came from a developer background, right? Occasionally, we hear the sentiment that “developers don't care about security,” how would you counter it (and would you?)? How do we encourage developers and operations to use the appropriate security controls and settings in the cloud? Is “encourage” the right word? Can we really do “secure by default” but for developers? What do you think are the main application security issues that developers need to deal with in the cloud? You mentioned software supply chain security, do you treat this as a part of application security? How important is this, realistically, for an average organization and its developers? Going to our favorite subject of threat detection, how do you think we can better encourage developers to supply the logs necessary for our detection and response teams to act upon? In this episode, we talk with Ami Horowitz, documentary filmmaker, educator, and conservative activist. He co-directed, co-wrote, and starred in U.N. Me, a 2009 documentary film that launched his career, and explains how the U.N has “failed to live up to its founding principles in a very significant and a profound way.” He states his commitment to adding to the national conversation to help change the “dangerous course” the world is heading in. He explains how he transitioned from feature films to short documentaries and stunts on YouTube and Facebook to be able to reach more people and cover more topics. He shares how his influence has grown, and shares an experience filming anti-Semitic messages shared at a confernce at Duke and UNC, sponsored by the U.S. governement. The release of the film led to the lawsuit of Duke and UNC and ultimately to the creation of and executive order by the president to change Title IX of the Civil Rights Act to cover anti-Semitism. We talk about what Ami would do with $100 million, explaining how money is required to reach greater audiences, especially when working against recent pushes by Facebook and YouTube to “deflate the numbers of conservatives.” He explains the important role of the press in getting your voice heard, and says that his goal is to reach liberal audiences to “substantially change their perspective and viewpoints” on important issues. He shares his experience filming the “orgy of violence” in the recent Minneapolis riots, as well as joining Syrian refugees as they crossed the Aegean Ocean from Turkey to Greece. He also recounts his experience getting beaten while filming “Stockholm Syndrome” to highlight the dangers of open Islaamic immigration into Sweden. We discuss his production expenses and budget. We finish with Ami explaining what he wants his legacy to be, and what he defines as success.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
