Our annual outdoor recording at the Mobile Kino Lakeside Film Festival at Klingemühle in Brandenburg. Now in its fifth year, the event many improvements - a new name, a new stage, more guests and more fun all round. Like playing card games while camping? Our guest Julia Weiss tells us what it's like to work for a card game company. Julia is the lead writer for Cards Against Humanity, as well as a cast member on the podcast The Improvised Star Trek. "If our goal is to live in a post-capitalist space future, watch Star Trek," Julia says. Caroline's review of Star Trek: "A lot of ambient music and three-dimensional board games." Berlins's garden plots are being targeted by property speculators. Investors are snapping up Kleingarten hoping the city will allow them to build apartments. One such investor is an alleged crime gang from Neukölln. Police recently seized 77 of their properties worth €9.2M, including garden plots. It's alleged the real estate was bought with the proceeds of a spectacular bank robbery. Temperatures hit 38.5°C in Berlin on August 9, just short of the record high. The city's street cleaning service plans to spray the roads with water to cool things down - though some think it might make the city more humid and uncomfortable. Hosted by Joel Dullroy, Jöran Mandik and Caroline Clifford.

Ever since he saw Jackie Chan's First Strike at the age of 7, Eli has been a huge fan of Chan. Seeking out every film of his, starting from his vast catalog in China and his American-made films as he became more of a domestic success, Eli is in awe of Chan's martial arts abilities as a performer, stunt choreographer, and director. All of Eli's favorite fights and films are covered as well as some fun facts about the Chinese opera school friends Chan has made the most movies with and his penchants for singing the theme songs to his movies and making blooper reels of outtakes and stunt failures. Due to a background of study ranging from psychology to physical theater, Mary Cait Walthall has become incredibly mindful of how people communicate with one another. She actively works to impliment nonviolent communication and restorative practices in Chicago Public Schools, and she is always using the wisdom she gleaned from LISPA to be aware of nonverbal communication as a performer, teacher, and restorative justice specialist. The conversation ranges from doing improvisational theatre with ESL actors using their first language to acknowledging privilege within conversations about social justice to the can of worms that is communicating on the Internet. Notes: Mary Cait is a member of the Improvised Star Trek and Superhuman. Lifelong fan of the classics and passionate supporter of the continued seasons, Chris Rathjen is a Whovian of epic proportions. From watching black and white episodes on Iowa public television every Friday night ad infinitum to appreciating newfound BBC production quality and emotional nuance, Chris loves the humanity behind the otherworldliness of the show and has never missed an episode (to the point of enjoying ones that have recently been reconstructed from found audio and newly-produced animations). In spite of not spending too much time on the villains of Doctor Who, we cover a lot of ground on Doctors, companions, and the show runners and writing that tie them all together. Check out Chris's work on Improvised Star Trek, Hello From the Magic Tavern, and The Probe. Watch the sketch on YouTube here!: Alisha comes back (or forward, depending on how time works for you). She’s fun, she co-created the original show, blah blah blah. First off, apologies for the apparent vacuums that are coming out of our faces. This was an episode where the technical difficulties definitely overwhelmed us, which is why this is kind of a lost episode. For some reason, Alisha’s audio vanished, but after a lot of processing I was able to get it back. Why did I spend so much time on this? Because what a delightful conversation about Stuart’s anatomy, Alisha’s horrifying movie experience and more! Then, we use a thing that happened at one of Stuart’s daughter’s cheer competitions to come up with a sketch. Season 2 is going to be great! I’m really excited about it! So far I have assembled some pretty fun names and pretty interesting people. The season is going to start off with a great sketch with Mike Phirman of “Hard ’n Phirm” fame. There are a number of songs of theirs that I absolutely adore, especially “Anything” It is one of the most inspirational songs I have ever heard… for some. New season debuts September 3rd! Just in time for back to school! In celebration of @Stoopac’s daughter, @aleyriice going to the Cheerleading National Championships (#NotSoHumbleBrag), we revisit an episode that was lost about a year ago! During one of the competitions from a couple of years ago, there was a team that competed using a cheer that included the phrase “white is our power” and then there was a whole Trump cheerleading thing that happened and… well… it resulted in this sketch. Alisha did a really good job coming up with cheers on the fly. When I think of the podcasts that really influenced me in starting my own, I have to look to the stars, and one of my favorite podcasts of all-time “The Improvised Star Trek”. I love this show so much. Follow the adventures of the USS Sissyphus and their fearless(?) Captain Julius Valentine Baxter as they traverse the universe on their 5 year mission to… um… I am pretty sure they have a mission, don’t they? Beam down new episodes to your phone and listen to the group improvise their way through an entire episode of Star Trek based on a show title they get from their audience. It is brilliant, and the sound design is fantastic as well. (http://www.theimprovisedstartrek.com) Next episode is the final re-release of the Summer ReRuns. I’m not going to lie, I’m glad I finally got a chance to remaster and reconfigure the show this way but I’m excited to get to the new stuff! Listen in next time to my parent’s favorite episode with Donal Connolly… it is super special because he has an accent! Sketch Comedy Podcast show is an independent and completely improvised sketch podcast that is based on conversations with interesting people like YOU! We welcome all suggestions, and we are always looking for new and interesting people to have on the podcast. In lieu of the DVD Shelf, we head to DePaul’s A Celebration of Star Trek, with a recording of Kate’s Star Trek Fantasy Crew Draft. Kate moderates as author Jody Lynn Nye, Jon Clarke of Caffeinated Comics, Sean Kelley of Improvised Star Trek, Caroline Siede of The A.V. Club, and writer Gordon Dymowski draft their ideal Star Trek crews, compiling a team out of the series regulars from Star Trek: TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. Each panelist is tasked with a crisis to avert, and it’s up to the audience to decide whose lineup is the ultimate fantasy Star Trek crew.
Matt Young works for an app development company, and recently he was tasked with playing a diverse swath of indie games to see if he could learn anything from the experience. He's going to share his insights with our hosts today, plus talk some gaming news (Nintendo NX, anyone?), plus we once again see the return of Patreon the matronly robot, who had a rough weekend! Thanks to our sponsors for this episode, Cards Against Humanity, and thanks as always to the Chicago Podcast Coop! You can catch Matt Young on his fantastic podcasts Hello from the Magic Tavern and Improvised Star Trek.

Sean Kelley's a great guy, and Improvised Star Trek's a great show. Sean brings that greatness to bear in a wonderful discussion with hosts Tim and Kellen about the prevelance of violence in video games. Why, so often, is it the only option? What would a different sort of game look like? Did Kellen murder Clayton so he could wear his flesh as a suit? The answers to all those questions AND MORE are within. Thanks to our sponsors for this episode, Basecamp, and thanks of course to the Chicago Podcast Coop!
Sean Kelley of Improvised Star Trek joins the Patricks to discuss The Naked Now. In this episode of Pat Trek, they debate whether the second installment of TNG was any good, as well as the ethics of programming a robot for sex.
Every year, the Loyal Policies of HartLife celebrate Exclusion Day: the day the glorious founders of the Company sealed the tower away from the cold, Wolves, and dangers of the Outside, protecting their Policies from here to eternity. By Excluding the outside world, Loyal Policies would never be exposed to dangers like Free Thought, New Ideas, or Innovation. This musical episode was recorded live at iO Chicago with Improvised Star Trek on December 18, 2015. We'd like to make a special note here: this Holiday season, the themes of exclusion, refugees, and societal control through xenophobia are everywhere in the news. We'd like to take the opportunity to raise awareness for several great organizations that are working to provide opportunities and help for refugees in American and around the world. Here in Chicago, we'd recommend supporting RefugeeOne, which you can learn more about at refugeeone.org--they're a great organization dedicated to creating opportunities for refugees fleeing war, terror, and persecution to build new lives of safety, dignity, and self-reliance. Globally, Doctors without Borders is a fantastic organization, helping people worldwide where the need is greatest, delivering emergency medical aid to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from health care. You can find their organization online at doctorswithoutborders.org. Finally, we recommend supporting the TransLatin@ Coalition, whose mission is to advocate for the specific needs of Trans Latin@ immigrants who reside in the US and plan advocacy strategies that would improve their quality of life. Support them and learn more at http://www.translatinacoalition.org. For Caitlin Costello, St. Patrick's Day has more significance than plastic hats and green beer. The holiday means corned beef and potato dishes with her huge family at her grandmother's house in Notre Dame, IN. They all lived close enough to the stadium that their addresses were Notre Dame, not South Bend. She never stood a chance against falling in love with her family's Irish roots. Hearing about how the holiday has changed in her life since she came to school in Chicago (to defy her Notre Dame surroundings!) was a real joy. Thanks to Utter Nonsense for sponsoring and the Chicago Podcast Cooperative for coordinating sponsorship and support. Here's Uh, Was That Jazz?, my most recent appearrance on Improvised Star Trek. It's fitting Matt chose to talk about board games because I think this episode has the fun and enthusiasm of sitting down for a rousing game with friends. Matt tells the best stories and so aptly applies his love of board games to his job with gamification AND to his passion for improv in the search for the game and beyond. This is an excellent ep especially for fellow gamers and follows Klingon Christmas Carol's Christopher Kidder-Mostrom well as Matt is a member of Improvised Star Trek (and Improvised Shakespeare). Play it, my babies! Notes: The creator of Settlers of Catan is, indeed, Klaus Teuber. NogginLabs, where Matt works. Jane McGonigal's TED Talks The Cones of Dunshire from Parks and Recreation THIS is what Matt referred to that gamers figured out. VERY cool.
Here's to a happy 2014 to you all! In this bonus we look back on 2013 and remember some out favorite moments. Thanks for listening!

This week on the show, Pax, Jeeg and CT are joined by improv actor Matt Young to chat at great length about his role as Captain Julius Valentine Baxter on the Improvised Star Trek Podcast. After the Nerd Lunchers get the scoop on the process, history, and Sixpence None the Honor's HIchop! (aka Klingon version of Kiss Me), the podcasters move into another installment of "Give That Guy Some Work." British actors abound this time as the crew comes up with a brand new show you won't be seeing on your TV anytime soon. Nerd To-Dos this week feature Horns by Joe Hill, My Life in Stripes, Fringe, and Arrested Development.
The show is a three way dance this week as Pax, Jeeg, and CT discuss of all things: sports. After spending a few minutes throwing bouquets at Huey Lewis, we talk about our histories watching and playing actual sports, delving into fantasy sports, and collecting sports memorabilia. Then we move on to a discussion of best and worst sports movies. Our Nerd To Dos include Josey Wales books, an Angel watching update, and something called Improvised Star Trek.

Happy birthday to Jonathan Frakes, from the Improvised Star Trek cast!
Lt. Cmdr. Fassbender creates a new form of life, endowed with shortcomings all too familiar to the crew of the Sisyphus, but entirely unfamiliar to the newest crew member, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Zarlene Zonalzon. Improvised Star Trek welcomes Mary Cait Walthall to the cast as Dr. Zonalzon.
Announcing several changes to Improvised Star Trek! Firstly, new episodes will now be released biweekly instead of weekly. While we're sorry to make you wait longer between adventures of the USS Sisyphus, the new schedule will ensure that episodes arrive reliably on time, and that every episode meets our highest production standards. It'll also free us up to produce bonus materials we've wanted to provide. Expect to hear some extras coming your way soon, hopefully to tide you over between new episodes. Secondly, we're thrilled to welcome a new member to the cast, Mary Cait Walthall. Mary Cait is an active member of the Chicago improv community, and we're all thrilled to have her on board the Sisyphus. Listen for her in upcoming episodes! Lastly, thanks to all of you who listen. If you're a fan of the show, keep spreading the word to your friends. Welcome to Improvised Star Trek! Our first "season" starting in April 2011 was a ton of fun, but there was a bit of learning curve taking our live stage show from iO Chicago and turning it into a podcast. Early episodes suffer from audio problems (though we're humbly submit that we took less time than TNG to find our footing), so for that reason we've pruned the first season a bit so that only episodes recognizable as what Improvised Star Trek became are available in the feed. Still, we understand Star Trek fans are completists by nature, so if you see any episode numbers missing and need to know what we cut, you can still hear them by heading to our website: http://www.theimprovisedstartrek.com Thanks for checking out Improvised Star Trek! The Human Adventure of the USS Sisyphus is just beginning.
