The latest dog attack in Northland has sparked calls for urgency around manging savage canines. Northland 62-year-old, Mihiata Te Rore, was killed by three dogs yesterday as she visited a home in Kaihu. NZ First's Shane Jones has suggested penalising owners of dangerous dogs with prison sentences. Northland MP Grant McCallum says councils need to enforce regulations to keep people safe - but some law changes are in order. "We've got too many dogs out there and you have to question some of the breeds, so the question becomes - do we look at a stronger de-sexing policy going forward? And also, some of the breeds of these dogs...are there just some breeds we don't need?" LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There's growing calls for additional regulations around feral dogs - and a recent attack has sparked renewed debate. A woman was killed in Northland's Kaihu yesterday by dogs, and the attack has prompted concern and outrage. NZ First MP Shane Jones says the character of the owners involved is more feral, and there needs to be a no-tolerance policy. "What else do we need to happen, before we as a community - quite apart from the politicians - move in and do what my dad used to do? If you have a stray, feral dog, it got shot." There's calls from experts, concerned citizens and politicians alike over whether animal control has enough powers and resources to lock animals up. A woman was mauled to death by dogs at a Kaihu home yesterday morning. SPCA senior scientific officer Alison Vaughan says the current laws are out of date, and a review is needed - plus additional funding. "The Dog Control Act is 30 years old, it's hopelessly out of date with modern science and what we know for other jurisdictions in terms of what is acceptive." Thirty-three-year-old lacrosse coach Diane Whipple was attacked and killed just steps from her apartment door in San Francisco. Two massive Presa Canario dogs, Bane and Hera, mauled her in the hallway of her building while neighbors desperately tried to help. She never made it outside. This was not a random dog attack. The dogs belonged to attorneys Marjorie Knoller and Robert Noel, who had taken them in despite repeated warnings about their aggression. The animals had been bred for guarding and linked to a prison-based dog breeding operation run by Aryan Brotherhood inmate Paul Schneider. Neighbors had reported dangerous behavior long before Diane was killed.Prosecutors argued that Knoller and Noel knew the dogs posed a serious risk and chose to ignore it. Knoller was convicted of second-degree murder. Noel was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. The case marked a legal turning point, establishing that knowingly creating a dangerous situation can carry the same consequences as direct violence.Diane's partner, Sharon Smith, also made history by filing California's first same-sex wrongful death lawsuit. The case left a lasting impact on criminal law, civil liability, and how society defines responsibility when warnings go unheeded.
