This comes after voters in Virginia narrowly approved a new congressional map that will allow Democrats to pick up as many as four new seats. President Donald Trump started this fight last year after successfully pushing red states Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina to redraw their congressional maps to create more Republican- friendly seats. Republicans were ecstatic about those rigged maps until the Democrats fought back, secured wins, and put MAGA's hypocrisy in the spotlight. Virginia's 2023 election may not have a state-wide office on the ballot, but there are 140 legislative seats, and plenty of local elections. Brad Kutner spoke with election officials about the counting process and when we can expect results Tuesday night.

Lawmakers elected to office next week will likely take up firearm legislation in the next General Assembly session. Democrats rate gun policy as the No. 2 top issue, behind abortion, according to a mid-October Christopher Newport University survey of likely voters. Independents rank gun policy as the fourth top issue of concern. Gun policy ranks lowest among Republicans, but comes in above health care and “other.” Several polls have indicated that control of the General Assembly is truly up for grabs, with voters pretty split on who they want in charge. Virginia voters have about two weeks left to cast an early vote, in person. More than 287,000 people have already voted early in the Nov. 7 election, through both in-person and mail ballots. More voters have cast an in-person ballot than submitted a mail ballot, as of Oct. 18. However, just over 228,000 mail applications have been requested, according to the Virginia Public Access Project. This is the first time a full General Assembly election has had a 45-day early voting period and no-excuse absentee mail ballot rule. The off-year elections in Virginia and New Jersey held clues for what is to come in the 2022 mid-terms. The Virginia election gave Republicans a roadmap for success and shocked Democrats. Rachel and Taylor talk about what happened and what it could mean for the future.

Gun control didn't really emerge as a campaign issue for either Democrat Terry McAuliffe or Republican Glenn Youngkin in the Virginia governor's race, despite the fact that the Second Amendment Sanctuary movement swept across the commonwealth less than two years ago. As Cam explains, both campaigns may have downplayed their views for strategic reasons, but that doesn't mean that voters are ignoring the issue.
