This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum interview Atlanta’s former mayor–and now GA gubernatorial candidate–Keisha Lance Bottoms. And we’ll respond to some of your criticism… Last week we did an episode about migrant rights that some of y’all pushed back on in the comments. Some challenged the notion that we ought to stand alongside communities who, according to some, do not stand alongside the Black community. Moreover, we hear your criticism that y’all want to know what to do and not necessarily just a lecture. We’re here for this back-and-forth, let’s talk. Gubernatorial candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms tells us what she learned from Stacey Abrams near-miss in Georgia, offers a thought or two on the situation at FAMU, and opens up about her strategy to win rural voters. With Buzz away there was nobody to play the role of calming influence, so we Pye and Scot tangoed some. Topics Pye got a tattoo. Because nothing says long-term thinking like permanent body art on a whim. Biden's mental decline is no longer a theory. The media covered for him. Not surprising, but still infuriating. Maybe we should have hearings about that. Our leaders are all eligible for early bird specials and hip replacements. Maybe it's time to let someone under 80 take a turn at the wheel. Keisha Lance Bottoms wants to be Governor. Because her handling of Atlanta clearly screamed "let me run more stuff." Democrats still don't have a bench. They barely have a stool. And it wobbles. Geoff Duncan ditches GOP 2.0 for Dems 2.0.. Moody's downgraded our credit rating. Turns out borrowing trillions doesn't come with a thank-you note. Interest on the national debt is now a budget category all by itself. We are literally paying interest on interest. The SALT deduction is still a scam that benefits rich people in high-tax states. But sure, tell me more about how it's for the middle class. The budget deficit is set to skyrocket over the next decade. You can only ignore math for so long before it shows up with consequences. Former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms ended all the speculation and announced her campaign for Georgia's governor's office early today. Greg Bluestein from the Atlanta Journal Constitution had a prolonged Q & A with Bottoms and it was somewhat revealing, actually. I'm still only lukewarm to the prospects of her being the Democratic party's nominee, but it's hard to ignore her introduction being an effective launch. ------Former Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan, the ex-Republican, has advice for the Democratic Party - to take a "new" direction he says. The problem is, this "new" direction is the same direction the party's tried taking since the ascendancy of Ronald Reagan - appeal to the center - and it's only failed the party more than it's aided them, but sure. Actually, no; Geoff should work harder to help sanity retake the GOP instead of trying to remake the Democratic Party to his liking. ------Bill Maher' sort of fallen from grace with a lot of us on the left, but occasionally he still delivers a "New Rule" worthy of sharing, and last weekend, he called out those on the right and the left for being so lacking in having 'core convictions.'

In normal election years its hard to get voters engaged in public service commission races. In 2025, Georgians have the rare opportunity to elect two to the five-seat PSC board, and the candidates are adding up. With data centers potentially impacting your utility bills (and why should they?) and rates continuing to climb while Georgia Power rakes in eye-popping profits, these two races could become high profile. An opportunity for utility customers to rebuke their rate increases has to be tantalizing. Having a new consumer watchdog pop up is even more good news for utility customers / voters. ------International students in South Carolina, here in Georgia and throughout the country are seeing their student visas get revoked. Agein, something about 'due process' and first amendment rights being 'inalienable.' ------Lastly, my innate reaction to the news that former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms considering a gubernatorial run hasn't really come together quite as well as the AJC's Bill Torpy managed to word it, so I'm endorsing his rationale that she's a 'dream candidate' ... for Georgia Republicans to run someone against.

It's been a minute since 'Atlanta Voice' editor-in-chief Donnell Suggs and I last spoke, and with so much to discuss, today seemed like as good a day as any to reconnect. Suggs got to spend a wire-to-wire day with Atlanta mayor Andre Dickens recently, so naturally, I had questions. With his re-election campaign's coffers brimming with cash, is that positive or negative in the eyes of Atlantans? Will 'Cop City' be a drag for him? His 11th hour pivot on 'Beltline rail?' Recent word that former mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is looking into a gubernatorial run had me wondering if she's more popular with the Atlanta voter base than conventional wisdom might bely. Will Senator Jon Ossoff lose support from black voters because of attack ads targeting his vote on trans sports participants? Will looming tariff costs to the average American household keep folks from traveling this summer? Two-time Emmy and three-time NAACP Image Award-winning television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Kathleen Bertrand. Kathleen Bertrand began talking in 2009 about a new film festival to attract people of color to Atlanta's growing film industry. From a discussion with her then CEO William Pate at the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau, to talks with film enthusiasts and potential film partners, Bertrand began to assemble the team and resources needed to launch what was to become BronzeLens Film Festival, a non-profit organization. While everybody knew about Tyler Perry's Atlanta-based empire, Bertrand and her colleagues created a platform for broader engagement in the industry for people of color and did so in a way that showcased Atlanta and its history and culture. Under Bertrand's visionary leadership as executive producer, BronzeLens has grown to receive attention and accolades from across the country and around the world. It is a charter member of ARRAY (formerly AFFRM), the film distribution network founded by producer/director Ava DuVernay in 2011. BronzeLens has been mentioned in articles about film diversity in publications such as the New York Times, the LA Times, Atlanta Magazine, Oz Magazine, and Ebony Magazine. In late 2016, the festival was named as an Academy Award Qualifying Film Festival for the Short Film Award. This tremendous honor is one of only 3 such designations in the country for film festivals that support the work of people of color. In its most recent film season, the festival received film submissions from 59 countries around the world. BronzeLens has received two “Best of Atlanta” Awards from Atlanta Magazine: “Best Showcase for New Filmmakers,” and “Best Place to Break into the Film Industry.” Kathleen has received numerous awards for her work with BronzeLens. In 2016, she was given the Georgia Highlight Award, as part of the annual Georgia Film Gala. On this week's episode of “The Saturday Show with Jonathan Capehart”: A reprehensible lie. Donald Trump and JD Vance are still pushing debunked lies about Haitian immigrants today. I'll discuss how the racist rhetoric is having an impact, on the people of Springfield, Ohio, the campaign trail, and the halls of Congress, with Harris-Walz campaign senior advisor, Keisha Lance-Bottoms and Rep. Gerald Connolly. The fight over an abortion rights amendment in Florida gets uglier. I'll ask the Executive Dir. of the Florida Women's Freedom Coalition, Anna Hochkammer about intimidation efforts that could backfire on Republicans in November. And Content creator and Cat Lady for Kamala, RaeShanda Lias, joins me to talk about Donald Trump's decision not to debate VP Harris again and Cat Lady Taylor Swift's epic endorsement. All that and more on “The Saturday Show with Jonathan Capehart.”

Sam speaks with Matthew Johnson, interim director of Beloved Community Ministries, to discuss the demonstrations surrounding Atlanta's "Cop City." Then, Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the backlash to the officers responsible for the killing of Tyre Nichols, the lies involved in the initial police report, cooling inflation numbers, George Santos taking a step back from his committees, and the US' response to political upheaval in Peru, before diving into coverage of Atlanta's “Stop Cop City” protests which, while driven by peace, has inspired Governor Brian Kemp to call in the National Guard. Matthew Johnson then joins as he dives right into the legislation and development of the Atlanta Police Department's “Cop City” training center, approved by Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms without knowledge of the City Council in 2021, and aimed at replacing the biggest urban forest in the US with the biggest militarized police training facility in the US. Contextualizing this decision, Johnson then walks through Atlanta's role as the most surveilled city in the US, the city with the worst racial income disparity, while featuring continuing gentrification and severe environmental racism, with a particular emphasis on the city's water supply, all of which are factors that would be seriously enflamed by the construction of Cop City over the Atlanta forest. Next, Matthew Johnson and Sam explore the movement defending the forest as a vast coalition that Kemp and the Atlanta PD are attempting to pass off as organized domestic terrorism, slapping serious charges on protesters alongside the typical abuses of police brutality, which culminated with the murder of community member Torta. They wrap up by discussing the importance of supporting places like Defend the Atlanta Forest and the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, and the future of this fight. And in the Fun Half: Tim Pool blames Defund the Police for fueling police brutality, Hochul continues to try to force herself into Cuomo's mold of Progressive-hating Democrat, and Dave Rubin dives into his experiences in the hall of the ever-kind and gracious Elon Musk. They also discuss the persistence of anti-vaxxer rhetoric despite the clear signs that the vaccine mitigated COVID-induced myocarditis, and CNBC rails against the Marxism in Joe Biden's FTC. Will from Nebraska discusses the impacts of the Right's transphobic fear-mongering, and  Sam and Emma cover updates on Paul Pelosi's attacker and his conspiracy blogging roots, plus, your calls and IMs!
