Part 2 Soil Microscopy with Organic Alexa (@organic.alexa on IG and http://www.organicalexa.com)This week we slow it down and start by looking at unhealthy, traditional agricultural soil that lacks bio-diversity in microorganisms. Alexa then shows an active and bio-diverse sample of cedar leaf mold.We dissect the organisms that are present in the healthy soils and get a better understanding on how a diverse soil can be mimicked in compost teas, extracts and other inputs.Alexa does an amazing job and really breaking down the nutrient cycle by explaining the different organisms: bacteria and fungi are the food for the protozoa and nematodes and by these organisms being present and processed, they are essentially cycling the nutrients in your soil.Understanding how to 'steer' your teas to be more bio-diverse (bioactive) and what it is to look for in those inputs is a great way to elevate your game. Then we get into what different inputs look like under the micrscope (compost teas, compost, worm castings)The community questions this week:53:00 - When scoping a tea, should one collect a sample of foam or the liquid? Is there a protocol for tea that differs from scoping soil?54:40 - What's a good starter microscope?56:30 - What books you would recommend to reference different microbes?57:40 - Why do mycorrhizae makes bio photons?1:01:20 - Thoughts on adding green sand and grasses versus using a diverse cover crop?1:05:00 - What am I getting by just using castings in a short/soak extract (compost extract) rather than a bubbled tea (aerated compost tea)?1:11:55 - Whats the bigger difference between compost tea and worm tea?1:15:45 - Is using a compost tea better than top-dressing compost? You can support this free show by supporting the small-businesses that run this show:http://www.organicalexa.comhttp://www.okcalyxxshop.comhttp://www.rubberduckyisopods.comhttp://www.MIBeneficials.com

This week we are talking with Josh from @yellowskunkfarms who has dedicated the past year to building his aquaponic-inspired, regenerative garden ecosystem. Josh opens up the book on his instagram for how he has made his permanent structure up until this point and we get the opportunity to pick his brain, add insight and vicariously become a part of this amazing project and homage to natures beauty. By incorporating a stream, with flowing water and natural species of aquatic life, he will be able to provide nutrient dense water to his plants which will grow around the perimeter and in the center of his ecosystem. This week we are going to go through the planning and implementation of regenerative practices on a new piece of property.Bringing soil health to a new property not only brings new opportunity for agriculture, it also improves the quality of everything around, including your life. JJoin us live every Friday Night at 9pm EST (8pm CST, 7pm MST)Check out our websites:http://www.mibeneficials.comhttp://www.rubberduckyisopods.comhttp://www.okcalyxxshop.comTopics Discussed Tonight:1. Educate Yourself: Learn about regenerative agriculture principles and practices. There are many resources available, including books, online courses, and workshops. Some key figures in the field include Allan Savory, Gabe Brown, and Joel Salatin.2. Assess Your Land: Conduct a thorough assessment of your land. This includes soil testing to understand its current health, fertility, and structure. Observe the existing vegetation, water sources, and wildlife. Understanding your land's unique characteristics will help you make informed decisions.3. Plan Your Farm Design: Create a holistic farm plan that incorporates regenerative practices. This might include rotational grazing, cover cropping, no-till farming, agroforestry, and composting. Consider how different elements of your farm will interact and support each other.4. Build Healthy Soil: Focus on improving soil health through practices like cover cropping, adding organic matter, and reducing soil disturbance. Healthy soil is the foundation of regenerative farming and supports plant growth, water retention, and carbon sequestration.5. Implement Water Management Practices: Efficient water use is crucial. Implement practices like rainwater harvesting, building swales, and using drip irrigation to conserve water and improve its distribution across your farm.6. Promote Biodiversity: Encourage a diverse range of plants and animals on your farm. This can include planting a variety of crops, integrating livestock, and creating habitats for beneficial insects and wildlife. Biodiversity helps build resilience against pests and diseases.7. Use Livestock Wisely: If you plan to include livestock, use them as tools for land management. Practices like rotational grazing can help improve soil health, control weeds, and enhance nutrient cycling.
Kevin and Bryan go over techniques for remediating the soil on your land, using natural methods of Bioremediation. Understanding the power of microbes, hyper-accumulators and dynamic accumulators can help you achieve remediated farm soil.

This week we get to chat with Ross from Hyphagrown; a commercial No-Till operation out of Northern Michigan. This company has been successfully operating vertical raised beds, running No-Till, on factory racking systems for years. They are active in their efforts to reduce the operations carbon footprint by re-purposing dehumidification water, composting their 'waste' products and recycling things that most operations throw away after each run... Like their stalks, stems, dirt and pots. There are hurdles in running scaled up Regenerative/No-Till operations and we can't wait to field some questions and dive deeper into it.
On this episode we are joined by Sean from Rising Moon Medicinals to talk about life on his regenerative, permaculture farm. His understanding and explanation of a permaculture system is truly unique and his approach is simple to follow. Utilizing the things he has access to on his property in Michigan (closing the loop), surveying his property and adjusting landscape to improve water movement and retention, considering sunlight for certain crops, using chickens for composting machines, and so many more simple but effective ways to improve your plan. This is an excellent listen for anyone who has been thinking of starting and improving a regenerative, permaculture property and we hope you find some value in this hour long episode. We hope you can join us Friday at 9pm and drop some questions in LIVE for us to answer.
