Conservation Is Not Enough: Rethinking Relationships with Water in the Arid Southwest (University of Wyoming Press, 2025) by Dr. Janine Schipper reconsiders the most basic assumptions about water issues in the Southwest, revealing why conservation alone will not lead to a sustainable water future. The book undertakes a thorough examination of the prevailing “conservation ethos” deeply ingrained in the culture, critically analyzing its historical roots and shedding light on its problems and inherent limitations. Additionally, it explores deep ecology and an Indigenous water ethos, offering radically different ways of understanding and experiencing water. Using an exploratory and qualitative approach, Dr. Schipper draws on more than ninety-five interviews conducted over three years, revealing the complex relationships people have with water in the Southwest, and prominently features the voices of participants, effectively illustrating multiple perspectives and diverse ways of thinking about and relating to water. Schipper highlights various perspectives—including a water manager making conservation decisions, a Hopi elder emphasizing our connection to the water cycle, and a ski instructor reflecting on human-made snow—and interweaves personal experiences and reflections on her own relationship with water and conservation efforts. Conservation Is Not Enough encourages readers to reflect on their personal connections to water and consider new possibilities, and it also urges readers to think beyond conventional conservation approaches. This book helps to transform the collective approach to water and cultivate fresh ways of engaging with and relating to water and is of great interest to scholars, students, and residents concerned with water issues in the Colorado River Basin. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Tribes that rely on Colorado River water — and the complex set of rules that govern it — are worried about how President Donald Trump's executive orders and the ongoing legal questions about them will affect their water access. President Trump froze federal funds for the Inflation Reduction Act. Even after a judge reinstated those funds, tribes are concerned about the viability of some water conservation efforts going forward. Those water access issues are becoming increasingly important because of long-term trends showing significantly less water available in the basin. This episode of The Science Behind Your Salad from BASF visits Spain, Portugal and Egypt in a quest to discover how olive crops will be affected by climate change. Jane Craigie meets the farmers busily harvesting their crops, ready to take them off to the mill to be pressed into delicious golden olive oil. The main focus of the olive growing industry encircles the Mediterranean. Olives favour warm conditions, but in some areas the climate is warming. Arid regions of Andalusia are becoming drier, and so farmers rely more and more on irrigation. Jane meets farmers working hard to ensure their water goes a long way and they get the best from the scarce supply. She also meets farmers reinvigorating the olive industry in Egypt, with the help of modern farming methods and crop treatments, plus in Portugal she learns how the circularity of the farming operation, ensuring nothing is wasted, is becoming normal practice. Meanwhile she talks to Johnny Madge, internationally known olive oil expert to find out what the future holds for a crop that faces challenges from a volatile climate.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This last week has been incredible for me. After almost 5 years of being connected to different aspects of the work at the farm in La Junquera, first through my connection with Silvia Quarta the leader of Camp Altiplano, the first in the global Ecosystem Restoration Communities network back when I worked at the restoration coordinator, then through collaborations with Alfonzo and Yanniek through the Climate farming community, and also with their incredible staff of Clara, Jeronimo, and Jacobo in coordination and organizing, I was finally able to visit them in person. In the first few days we did some course planning and taught a two day intensive on water resource management for farmers. I stayed a few days to talk about their new collective project to restore the watershed of the Quipar river, and then represented Climate Farmers in a Benchmarks soil health program. It has been surreal to meet the heroes who are working tirelessly to pioneer regenerative management in their semi arid location and to build friendships that go far beyond the occasional zoom call. That brings me to our interview today with Silvia Quarta.

I have a tradition of recording for the week around Summer Solstice every year. The long days and extended twilights draw out the liveliest and most expressive Dawn Choruses of the season. This year I'm in Sinlahekin Valley in Washington State's Okanogan High Country. It's a deep, long scar on the ground gouged and left behind by retreating arms of the Cordilleran Ice Sheets of the last several glaciated ice ages. Arid steppes on one side, fir-covered mountains on the other, the Valley draws a line that separates two of the major ecological regions in our State. Running much of the length of the Valley is Sinlahekin Creek, a meandering, beaver-controlled system that sustains a narrow strip of wetlands and riparian borders favored by passing migratory birds. Deep enough to not sustain strong wind, the Valley is a valuable shelter, sometimes for passing birds to rest, sometimes to stay. One of those birds is the Yellow-breasted Chat, a laconic-yet-vociferous songbird with a voice both louder and deeper than belies its small size. One of the more enigmatic songbirds of North America, the Yellow-breasted Chat is widespread across the continent but rarely found in dense numbers. It skulks about in dense riparian thickets and other shrubby habitats, nesting deep within and singing from a barely-exposed perch. More often heard than seen in late Spring and early Summer, when males produce long soliloquies in search for a mate (or sometimes two), they have a brief but explosively creative burst of song every year, only to remain silent for the rest of it. Recorded on Summer Solstice, 2024, this particular singer was a surprise. I had been hiking around one of my favorite valley campgrounds, enjoying the recent explosion of late-Spring songbirds, when I noticed a thicket that was particularly favored by local Lazuli Buntings. Nice Bunting recordings being a goal of this trip, I quickly set up a lightweight hiking recorder with a pair of small mics to leave overnight in hopes that Buntings could have time to sing as they saw fit. Imagine my surprise when listening back to the recordings and found more than an hours' worth of a Yellow-breasted Chat singing close by, as if I'd set these microphones up just for him! Our Chat wakes up early in Nautical Twilight with a burst of whistles to rattle the neighborhood. After a brief rest, he begins his soliloquy of repeated grunts, rattles, beeps, and whistles. Soon, less than a minute later, the first distant songs of the next Chat over can be heard in the background. They space themselves out along the riparian border of Sinlahekin Creek just close enough to still be heard, far enough away to give each other space. While most birds sleep in and wait for more light, including Robins and Blackbirds, Nautical Twilight is their moment to sing. For most of the next two hours this little bird will sing from the same perch, only occasionally shifting directions as if he wants to be sure everyone has an equal chance to hear his voice. His voice grows louder and softer as he turns toward or away from the microphones. He's so close the early reflections off the leaves of the thicket scatter his voice back to us loud and clear even when he faces away. With almost mechanical precision he continues his steady chanting song. As other birds awaken with the slowly breaking mountain dawn, the air fills with songs loud and soft behind — but never interfering with — the Chat. Soon there are cawing Crows, Black-capped Chickadees sweetly calling, “Phoee-be”, and Lazuli Buntings working out their unique and recently “crystalized” songs. A Veery sounds like a mournful flute the next hedge over. A Ruffed Grouse beats its wings with an almost too-low-to-hear “flah-thump”. Yellow Warblers, Red-eyed Vireos, Common Yellowthroats, and Spotted Towhees circle the neighborhood, calling from one tree, singing from another, never satisfied, at least not until Sunrise when everyone will disperse to live out their day foraging for meals and nesting material. Filling out the soundscape are Cedar Waxwings, Olive-sided Flycatchers, Pied-billed Grebes, Pine Siskins, rowdy gangs of teenaged Red-winged Blackbirds, and more. After Sunrise the avian community slowly disperses. The Dawn Chorus is no more, replaced in whole by daily activities. Song continues as part of that organizing behavior, but the Dawn pronouncements are over after nearly 2 hours of upwelling joy. Our chat slowly moves farther and farther from his perch, allowing daring Buntings and Towhees the chance to take over the job of songmeister. If we were to keep listening throughout the day, we'd hear the Yellow Chat come and go, ensuring his perch and his home remain his and his alone. At night he will reverse the process, singing from Sunset to Astronomical Twilight, no so much fading away but just stopping when it's time to fall asleep, to gain back some of that spent energy to do it all again tomorrow. ESET Research: Arid Viper Group Targets Middle East, Poisons Palestinian App With Spyware

ESET researchers have identified five campaigns that employ trojanised apps to target Android users. ESET Research discovered multistage Android malware, which ESET named AridSpy, being distributed via five dedicated websites. ESET detected occurrences of AridSpy in both Palestine and Egypt and attributed it, with medium confidence, to the Arid Viper APT group. AridSpy's code is, in some cases, bundled into applications that provide legitimate functionality. AridSpy is a remotely controlled Trojan that focuses on user data espionage; it can spy on messaging apps, and exfiltrate content from the device, among other functionalities. Most likely carried out by the Arid Viper APT group, these campaigns started in 2022, and three of them are still ongoing at the time of publication of this press release. They deploy multistage Android spyware, which ESET has named AridSpy, that downloads first- and second-stage payloads from its Command & Control (C&C) server to assist it in avoiding detection. The malware is distributed through dedicated websites impersonating various messaging apps, a job opportunity app, and a Palestinian Civil Registry app. Often, these are existing applications that have been trojanised by the addition of AridSpy's malicious code. ESET Research detected the remotely controlled AridSpy Trojan, which focuses on user data espionage, in Palestine and Egypt. Arid Viper, also known as APT-C-23, Desert Falcons, or Two-tailed Scorpion, is a cyberespionage group known for targeting countries in the Middle East; the group has drawn attention over the years for its vast arsenal of malware for Android, iOS, and Windows platforms. Three affected apps provided via the impersonating websites are legitimate apps trojanised with AridSpy spyware. These malicious apps have never been offered through Google Play and are downloaded exclusively from third-party sites. To install these apps, the potential victim is asked to enable the non-default Android option to install apps from unknown sources. The majority of the spyware instances registered in Palestine were for the malicious Palestinian Civil Registry app. "In order to gain initial access to the device, the threat actors try to convince their potential victim to install a fake but functional app. Once the target clicks the site's download button, myScript.js, hosted on the same server, is executed to generate the correct download path for the malicious file," explains ESET researcher Lukas Stefanko, who discovered AridSpy, describing how users are infected. One campaign included LapizaChat, a malicious Android messaging application with trojanised versions of StealthChat: Private Messaging bundled with AridSpy's malicious code. ESET identified two other campaigns that started distributing AridSpy after LapizaChat, this time posing as messaging apps named NortirChat and ReblyChat. NortirChat is based on the legitimate Session messaging app, while ReblyChat is based on the legitimate Voxer Walkie Talkie Messenger. On the other hand, the Palestinian Civil Registry app is inspired by an app previously available on Google Play. However, based on our investigation, the malicious app available online is not a trojanised version of the app on Google Play; instead, it uses that app's legitimate server to retrieve information. This means that Arid Viper was inspired by that app's functionality but created its own client layer that communicates with the legitimate server. Most likely, Arid Viper reverse-engineered the legitimate Android app from Google Play and used its server to retrieve victims' data. The final campaign ESET identified distributes AridSpy as a job offering app. AridSpy has a feature intended to avoid network detection - specifically C&C communication. It can deactivate itself, as AridSpy states in the code. Data exfiltration is initiated either by receiving a command from the Firebase C& C server or when a specifically defined event is triggered. These events inclu...

here is the fanfic! be excited! Chapter 1: Raindrop The wind blew vigorously on Raindrop's face as she stumbled through the scorching desert. Tiny specks of sand splashed on top of her like tiny little knives stabbing her shimmering scales. She needed to get to the palace now, no exceptions. The wind sounded like a symphony of flutes blowing in her ears. A huge gust of wind blew Raindrop over onto her back. She pushed with all her might to continue forwards. Finally, out in the distance she could spot the beautiful sandwing palace. She ran as fast as she could whilst the wind resisted her force like a brick wall. The sun glistened over her cold body. Her icewing self could not handle feverish temperatures. She closed her eyes and with all her might, she pushed as hard as she could. She had made it. The massive palace towered before her; it made her feel small. She gave a sigh of relief and limped into the large sandy gates of the sandwing palace. The guards stared her down like bald eagles stalking their prey. Ahead of her was queen Arid, reclining in her sparkly throne. “Your majesty,” Raindrop said as she lowered down into a curtsy. You wanted to be nice to queen Arid; she was a bad enemy to have. She was an animus, the third animus in the history of the  sandwings. Animuses are dangerous dragons; they can do anything they please. “Yes,” answered Arid making Raindrop jump. “I have an inquiry,” Raindrop stated stuttering. “Continue,” Arid gestured. “I am Raindrop, I have nowhere to stay. I am a tribrid of a Rainwing, Icewing and Seawing; each kingdom has kicked me out. Is it that I may stay in your beautiful kingdom o great queen?”  She explained. “And what will you give me in return?” Arid asked intrigued.  “I will work for you,” Raindrop replied confidently. Raindrop thought about her life for a moment then got hit by a train of thoughts. She spaced out.  “Umm, excuse me?” A sassy voice said warningly. Raindrop looked up; it was the princess.  This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit spiritwingspodcast.substack.com

Despite a worsening drought, several factors including Political influence and lack of regulations have allowed the company to draw an unlimited amount of groundwater from the wells it operates in the area. According to the Associated Press, the two new wells would have pumped in just three minutes what a family of four uses in a month. Why did Saudi Arabia choose Arizona for its crop production? In her new book Arid Empire: The Entangled Fates of Arabia and Arizona. University of Syracuse political geographer professor Natalie Koch explores the exchange of colonial technologies between the Arabian Peninsula and the United States over the last two centuries,

The iconic deserts of the American southwest could not have been colonized and settled without the help of desert experts from the Middle East. For example: In 1856, a caravan of thirty-three camels arrived in Indianola, Texas, led by a Syrian cameleer the Americans called "Hi Jolly." This "camel corps," the US government hoped, could help the army secure the new southwest swath of the country just wrested from Mexico. Though the dream of the camel corps - and sadly, the camels - died, the idea of drawing on expertise, knowledge, and practices from the desert countries of the Middle East did not. As Dr. Natalie Koch demonstrates in Arid Empire: The Entangled Fates of Arizona and Arabia (Verso, 2023), this evocative, narrative history, the exchange of colonial technologies between the Arabian Peninsula and United States over the past two centuries - from date palm farming and desert agriculture to the utopian sci-fi dreams of Biosphere 2 and Frank Herbert's Dune - bound the two regions together, solidifying the colonization of the US West and, eventually, the reach of American power into the Middle East. Koch teaches us to see deserts anew, not as mythic sites of romance or empty wastelands but as an "arid empire," a crucial political space where imperial dreams coalesce. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. What a strange episode this was. Immediately the show is sidetracked talking about the video which causes Daniel to skip the Running update at the top of the show (don't worry, he did talk about it later in the episode). As it turns out, Adam doesn't even know who Miley Cyrus is - much less know about her new song and the significance of it when compared to a Bruno Mars song from 2009. We also learn that Adam doesn't know why someone would be curious if he has top-secret documents in his house. Daniel has a new induction range and convection oven combo which arrived this week. He hasn't used it long enough to have a thorough review, but by the time the show comes back from hiatus, he will. Speaking of which, the show will be taking off the month of February due to a ton of scheduled events. Rest assured, it will return March 3rd, 2023 (so mark your calendars for that evening). Phillip Lietz of Arid's Only and Roy Arthur Blodgett of Wellspring Herpetoctulture are collaborating on a new venture together called Project: Herpetoculture. In this episode, both Phil and Roy update us on their current projects and then we delve into the philosophical principles that govern reptile-keeping. What is the purpose of keeping reptiles? Is it your God-given right to keep reptiles? How do we keep the practice of reptile keeping alive and well? And of course, we wrap up the episode with a discussion about Project: Herpetoculture which will be the latest show to be released on the Animals at Home Network.
