Part 2 Soil Microscopy with Organic Alexa (@organic.alexa on IG and http://www.organicalexa.com)This week we slow it down and start by looking at unhealthy, traditional agricultural soil that lacks bio-diversity in microorganisms. Alexa then shows an active and bio-diverse sample of cedar leaf mold.We dissect the organisms that are present in the healthy soils and get a better understanding on how a diverse soil can be mimicked in compost teas, extracts and other inputs.Alexa does an amazing job and really breaking down the nutrient cycle by explaining the different organisms: bacteria and fungi are the food for the protozoa and nematodes and by these organisms being present and processed, they are essentially cycling the nutrients in your soil.Understanding how to 'steer' your teas to be more bio-diverse (bioactive) and what it is to look for in those inputs is a great way to elevate your game. Then we get into what different inputs look like under the micrscope (compost teas, compost, worm castings)The community questions this week:53:00 - When scoping a tea, should one collect a sample of foam or the liquid? Is there a protocol for tea that differs from scoping soil?54:40 - What's a good starter microscope?56:30 - What books you would recommend to reference different microbes?57:40 - Why do mycorrhizae makes bio photons?1:01:20 - Thoughts on adding green sand and grasses versus using a diverse cover crop?1:05:00 - What am I getting by just using castings in a short/soak extract (compost extract) rather than a bubbled tea (aerated compost tea)?1:11:55 - Whats the bigger difference between compost tea and worm tea?1:15:45 - Is using a compost tea better than top-dressing compost? You can support this free show by supporting the small-businesses that run this show:http://www.organicalexa.comhttp://www.okcalyxxshop.comhttp://www.rubberduckyisopods.comhttp://www.MIBeneficials.com

275 Delaying Menopause - Understanding the Ovary Dr. Jennifer Garrison, a researcher and assistant professor at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, discusses her work on women's health and aging. She explains that her goal is to understand the underlying mechanisms of aging and develop interventions that promote women's health. Dr. Garrison focuses on the role of the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that controls various homeostatic systems in the body, including reproductive function. She emphasizes the importance of studying bioactive peptides, which act as chemical signals between the brain and other tissues. Menopause is defined as the cessation of menstruation for 12 months, but it also coincides with changes in ovarian function and the production of various chemical signals. Dr. Garrison highlights the need for further research to understand ovarian function and develop interventions to extend ovarian health. The conversation explores the work of the Center for Reproductive Longevity and Equality and the importance of maintaining ovarian function for healthy aging in women. The center funds grants to scientists and clinicians studying ovarian aging and has seen significant progress in the field. The discussion also touches on the use of frozen ovarian tissue for preserving fertility in cancer patients and the role of peptides in reproductive function. The conversation emphasizes the need to reframe the narrative around women's health and highlights the inequality in health span between men and women. Takeaways Understanding the underlying mechanisms of aging can lead to interventions that promote women's health. The hypothalamus plays a crucial role in regulating various homeostatic systems in the body, including reproductive function. Bioactive peptides act as chemical signals between the brain and other tissues, influencing various physiological processes. Menopause is defined as the cessation of menstruation for 12 months, but it also involves changes in ovarian function and the production of chemical signals. Further research is needed to understand ovarian function and develop interventions to extend ovarian health. The Center for Reproductive Longevity and Equality funds grants to study ovarian aging and has seen significant progress in the field. Frozen ovarian tissue can be used to preserve fertility in cancer patients. Peptides play a crucial role in reproductive function, but caution should be exercised when using peptide therapies. The narrative about women's health needs to be reframed to focus on maintaining ovarian function for healthy aging. Women live longer than men on average but spend a longer portion of their lives in poor health, highlighting an inequality in health span. https://www.buckinstitute.org/lab/garrison-lab/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjennifergarrison/ https://gcrle.org/ Special thanks to our sponsor, SOLV Wellness! On this week's episode, Dr. Riley Kirk discusses illegal pesticides found in legal California cannabis products with Alex Halperin, the founder of WeedWeek and one of the main reporters on this topic. They review what pesticides were found, how this investigation started, and how the industry can improve these findings. This article is very important for medical users to be aware of and is unfortunately another reason why we need to have the right to homegrow. Most labs when analyzing cannabis products are using a targeted method of analysis, meaning they know what molecules they are looking for and they report on those specific compounds. However, in this case, the illegal pesticides were not known, so they were not tested for. This brings up the issue if the cannabis industry needs to implement some form of testing to ensure we are not missing anything potentially harmful in the products. If you want to read the pdf of the article for free, see the full list of pesticides that were found in this study with the known health risks, and find out what brands tested hot all this info is linked is Riley's Patreon.
