I'm really excited to share this conversation with all of you today, because Joshua Sparkes not only has a unique perspective on gardening and food production, he also speaks about these topics from a lot of experience and infectious passion. I've spoken to tons of farmers and gardeners on this show, and many of them are experts in permaculture, or market gardening, or native plants, or any other specialty, but in Josh's case, he's studied in many parts of the world and learned a range of disciplines that he combines in his own unique way to create a truly inspiring and evolving food production system at Birch farm in the UK, that actually doesn't focus primarily on food growing at all. Before I let him explain that, let's start at the beginning. Josh was fortunate to grow up in a wild part of Sussex surrounded by forests and meadows. When he finished school He joined the military and served overseas. He says his childhood was often a place he retreated too during hard times and it made him realise that his love came from nature, and so he's dedicated the last 15 years to make sure he can do his best to support and protect it through his work, which was the beginning of his journey into Natural Farming. In this episode Josh will explain how attending a horticulture program opened doors to travel and learn from farmers and gardeners around the world and how that has shaped his vision for Birch farm. We explore how putting a main focus on increasing biodiversity has evolved into a wild configuration of plants in a small space which includes trees, and species that most consider weeds and pests as part of an integral system which aims to reach a balance through many multiple interconnections rather than eradication or suppression of certain life forms. Josh also explains how principles of natural farming and syntopic agriculture are married with the need to produce vegetables for a farm store and connected restaurant while also providing unique culinary and sensory experiences for customers. Of all the different food production systems that I've heard described on this show, I would say that the vision that Josh describes is the most aligned with my own for my own farm, just with much more knowledge and practical experience.

Good morning, Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Friday, November 29, 2024. This is Nelson John, let's get started. At COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the focus was all about climate finance, but the outcome left many wanting more. Initially aiming for $1.3 trillion annually, negotiators ended up agreeing on $300 billion a year by 2035, which didn't sit well with developing countries. They found the amount too low and the decision unambitious, expressing disappointment over the developed countries' reluctance to commit more. The conference also felt the impact of geopolitical tensions, particularly with Donald Trump's re-election, raising concerns about the U.S.'s commitment to climate finance. This scepticism influenced the negotiations, contributing to the lower-than-expected financial commitment. P Anima takes a deep dive into the happenings of the recently-concluded COP29 in the Azeri capital. Stellaris Venture Partners just launched its biggest fund yet at $300 million, sticking to that number despite heavy interest. Similarly, other investment firms like Blume Ventures and Peak XV are either holding steady or shrinking their funds, pointing to a shift towards more cautious investment strategies. Venture capital firms are getting more selective, influenced by past fund performances and the current economic climate, which demands realistic startup valuations. Priyamvada C reports on how VC firms are finding smaller fund sizes a better fit for the Indian market. India just kicked off a massive ₹2,481 crore National Mission on Natural Farming to help 10 million farmers go chemical-free. The plan? Roll out 10,000 bio input resource centers and train farmers using model farms. The government is also deploying 30,000 krishi sakhis who will guide the farmers. What's the difference between natural and organic farming, you ask? Both avoid chemicals, but organic farming needs strict certification and a few years to switch from conventional methods. Natural farming lets farmers switch at their own pace, which is great for flexibility but might make it harder to sell produce at premium prices like organic goods fetch. In today's Primer, Sayantan Bera explains how natural farming can affect the kind of food you consume and whether the method will make it safer to eat. This year, one company wants to hire an IITian at a salary of ₹1.9 crore. The catch? The AI company from San Francisco wants aspirants to create a Google-proof questionnaire that ChatGPT can't solve. Devina Sengupta and Pratishtha Bagai write that other AI companies like Turing, Graviton, and Da Vinci are also looking to hire students by providing remote working options and hefty salaries of more than ₹2 crore. Students well versed in machine learning seem to be the top choice as of now. Traditional employers like Goldman Sachs and Microsoft too are emphasising on AI-forward roles. There are a couple of new 10-minute delivery players in the market. Yes, their names start with an S and Z, but they're Swish and Zing. These startups are aiming to capitalise on the growing demand for quick commerce in India. Sowmya Ramasubramanian writes that these companies focus specifically on 10-minute food deliveries, catering to impulsive consumers seeking convenience. Gross merchandise value for quick commerce deliveries is projected to reach $9.9 billion in five years in this sector. Turns out, hunger can't really wait after all. COP kicks the climate can down the road, againIndia's venture capital firms are finding that leaner might be betterMint Primer | Natural farming: Will it make your food safe?Battle of AI versus the rest as offers promise ₹2 crore and above at IITsNew 10-minute food delivery startups are ready to test your impulse control

Steve aka Potent Ponics returns to GrowCast for a podcast all about FISH! Steve is a talented and knowledgeable cultivator with a vast amount of grow knowledge, but today we are returning to his roots of aquaponics to discuss one of the most fascinating cultivation styles on Earth. Steve talks about the easiest ways for home growers to incorporate an aquaponics setup- the only setup that produces meat protein! This turns to a conversation about simply incorporating some aquatic microbes even if you aren't an aquaponics grower- this means adding something like fish waste, aquarium water, or even creek/pond water under the right conditions. Steve also talks about the work he is doing with the Natural Farming AI Chat Bot, and how the bot has been shining when it comes to questions that pertain to specific geographic locations. The wave of cannabis patents ARE COMING! Today we have a brand new guest Caleb from Copyleft Cultivars- he joins us with mutual friend Steve Raisner to talk about the implications of patenting cannabis genetics. Copyleft explains his mission of open sourcing as many genetics as possible, while also building an open to anyone cannabis genome galaxy. Caleb highlights the difference between his project and other similar projects in the past- and how he is looking to reshape patent law both inside AND outside of cannabis. This leads to a conversation about patent trolls- people who engage in lawsuits around budding new industries and use lawsuits over intellectual property as extortion to get paid off. These groups are incredibly harmful to a variety of industries and cannabis is RIPE for this type of legal attack- which is why it's so important to open source our genetics. Caleb and Steve wrap the show by showcasing their new Natural Farming AI Bot that will produce answers and solutions to garden problems using natural farming inputs. The Soil Matters With Leighton Morrison and Dr. Av Singh Our channel, It's All About The Biology, is dedicated to growing with living soils. Soils that are full of biology like mother nature intended. Our motto is "However You Grow, Whatever You Grow, Just Grow," which encompasses everything from Natural Farming, Permaculture, Regenerative, Food Forest, Biodynamic, Living Soil, BioActive, Organic, No-Till, Jadam, KNF, and so much more. Whether you are a gardener, farmer, landscaper, or commercial grower, you will find a wealth of information shared by our hosts, The Soil Mentors: Dr. Av Singh and Leighton Morrison, who both have years of experience. The podcast invites guests to share their knowledge and expertise, as well. We have a heavy focus on the cannabis industry and growing quality medicinal cannabis, as this is the industry that we feel will bring growers together in the understanding that it's all about the biology and that living soils allow the plant, no matter what you grow, to achieve its full genetic potential. It is an industry that has been and is currently being studied and has strict testing regulations that monitor quality assurance. This gives the industry a greater understanding of what happens in growing plants using different types of inputs. It highlights the differences between naturally grown and grown with chemicals. In this episode, our two hosts meet, having heard about each other's careers, and finally get to truly interact with each other. Dr. Av Singh is from Nova Scotia, Canada, and Leighton Morrison is from California, U.S.A. In this and subsequent episodes, you will find that these two gentlemen compliment and respect each other's experience, knowledge, and understanding of growing in natural soils. In this episode, host Jennie Love is joined by Dr. Tom Dykstra, an entomologist with over 25 years of experience in academic and field research. Predominantly, he has studied insect olfaction (how insects smell) from the standpoint of bioelectromagnetics and has proven a new theory based on the fusion of biophysics and neurophysiology. Dr. Dykstra has long been involved in the field of agriculture and pest control. He brings a unique perspective to the table that flies in the face of conventional agriculture's penchant for liberally applying pesticides. Turns out pesticides kill far more than the pests -- but we regenerative farmers already knew that, right? Still, it's great to hear a lauded scientist explain why pesticides are the undoing of healthy plants. In this episode, we go into more detail about BRIX and how this easy measurement can be so meaningful to pest management. Through all his years of research with myriad crops and pests, Dr. Dykstra has found a magical BRIX number where, once that threshold has been reached, pests will not be a problem anymore! Listen in to learn what that number is! In this episode, a few links are mention. Here they are for easy reference: - Previous interview with Dr. Dykstra on the Regenerative Agriculture Podcast wtih John Kempf - The refactometer model Jennie uses at her farm to take BRIX readings. - The Wikipedia article on bioelectromagnetics for those who are curious to have a brief intro to the idea. A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THE EDITING OF THIS EPISODE: We're so grateful to Dr. Dykstra for sharing all his nerdy knowledge. That being said, he did get super nerdy for a bit early on in this interview. Like super duper nerdy! We thought we'd loose a lot of you in the weeds if we started the episode with that. So you'll be jumping into the middle of the interview when you start listening to this episode. Keep listening alllll the way to the end to hear a lot of detail about how Dr. Dykstra has determined insects "smell". Dr. Dykstra currently works as a consultant for Advancing Eco Ag if you'd like to pick his brain more. This show is brought to you by the Regenerative Flower Farmers Network (RFFN). Your membership in RFFN will go to support the making of more podcasts here on No-Till Flowers. Join RFFN today to read dozens of great articles on regenerative practices as they specifically relate to flower farming. World renowned Korean Natural Farming expert and friend of GrowCast Chris Trump returns to the show for an all new episode about a variety of advanced gardening subjects. Chris gives us an update on all his recent travels including his participation in the recent Science of Regenerative Cannabis Cultivation Conference tour. This leads to a conversation about how his overarching views on natural farming has shifted over the years, and Chris extrapolates on the importance of proper micro organism balance to achieve any means of real success in natural farming. Chris also shares his thoughts on molasses- specifically when used in the brewing of compost tea. Chris explains why he doesn't like to use molasses in his brews, and also shares why he prefers liquid sea bed derived humic acids over solid humic acid products. *The healthiest coffee I've ever found. In this episode we're drawing more highlights from our annual NOFA/Mass Winter Conference that happened remotely in January 2022. First we join Natural Farmer, Marco Thomas for an introduction to the Natural Farming technique of collecting of Indigenous Micro Organisms (IMOs). Then, we join Richard Robinson of Hopestill Farm for a deep dive into mulching, and his impassioned reasons for using leaves as mulch as possible. Marco Thomas is a natural farmer in Central Virginia, and is the founder of Microbes by Marco producing small batch craft inputs for soils. His work is focused on building soil and cultivating microorganisms to enhance his own garden and urban farm and he is guided by the principles, “Do as nature does.” and “Focus on the natural way.” Richard Robinson began organic gardening over 40 years ago and became a serious farmer in 2004. He grows certified organic vegetables, small fruits, and Christmas trees at Hopestill Farm in Sherborn, MA. Richard has also a member of the NOFA/Mass Board of Directors since 2017. You can find Marco Thomas at MicrobesbyMarco.com and on Instagram at: marco_is_growing More information on Richard Robinson and Hopestill Farm can be found at Hopestill.com To find more information on the Northeast Organic Farming Association chapter in your state please visit us at NOFA.org For additional information on upcoming workshops, articles and NOFA/Mass project updates, please follow our NOFA/Mass Facebook page and join our mailing list. Video episodes are now available on YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/c/AutoflowerPodcast Happy New Year to you all! Welcome new Patreon members Steve, Brooke, J. Lane, Jason, Victor, Kory, Green Wolf, Jon & Jeff! We have a special guest this episode. Marco, aka @marco_is_growing on Instagram. He also has another account on Instagram called @cannabis_naturally. He co-hosts The Bryan & Marco Show on the Future Cannabis Project YouTube channel with Bryan, who I'd also love to have on the podcast at some point. Marco is a well respected teacher and source of knowledge when it comes to natural farming and he's going to give us a peak into his gardening world. We don't dive too deep, but deep enough to catch the interest of those who wish to find ways to grow fully organic for very little cost. If you haven't noticed, things have been shifting among the collective of society over the last couple of years and many folks, including myself, find themselves hitting the reset button on what they do for a living… or are struggling to make ends meet. Others are simply drawn to the idea of a DIY approach. I'm one of those people as well. I do my own electrical, build my own sheds, make my own beard balm, build my own fences & gates & work on my own truck unless it's crazy. The point is there are a lot of us out there who desire to learn organic natural farming techniques and in my opinion, Marco is one of the best to look up to. He's an old soul with a lot of knowledge and very little ego, and I like that. Enjoy!
