Thomas Marriott, General Manager of Exotics Keeper breaks down what he observed during his second trip to New Caledonia — this time during the dry season. Many keepers picture New Caledonia as consistently humid and tropical year-round, but Thomas shares the surprising environmental shifts that occur during the dry season and how those shifts directly impact wild Crested Gecko behavior and habitat use. Thomas also shares insights from a recent stint in Australia studying wild Bearded Dragon habitats and how field data can challenge some of the assumptions we make in captivity. If you care about aligning captive care more closely with natural history, this episode is packed with practical takeaways.SHOW NOTES: https://www.animalsathomenetwork.com/245-exotic-keeper/SPONSORS: Visit The BioDude: https://www.thebiodude.com/ Visit Zoo Med Labs here: https://zoomed.com/JOIN US ON PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/animalsathomeLINKS FROM THE EPISODE:https://exoticskeeper.com/https://www.instagram.com/exoticskeeper/Photos and Video in Episode:Provided by Thomas Marriott0:00 Intro2:49 Welcome Thomas - New Caladonia Overview15:05 Crested Gecko Behavior in Dry Season19:25 How to Replicate Crested Gecko Habitat21:47 Wild Crested Gecko Diet (wet vs dry season)25:27 Zoo Med Creatures Roly-Poly Kit26:40 Why Crested Geckos do well in Captivity36:34 Environmental Readings - When are Crested Geckos Active in the Wild?38:11 Replicating Environmental Cues 42:30 Other Species found on New Caladonia 55:36 BioDude TerraFanua Substrate56:38 Bearded Dragons in the Wild - impaction & body condition1:17:40 Leopard Geckos - the plan to find wild specimens 1:21:55 Closing Thoughts

Euthanasia is never easy — especially in reptiles, where vascular access can turn into a challenge and distressing scenes are the last thing you want during such a delicate moment. Today, le'ts dive into a new study testing transmucosal administration of pentobarbital and phenytoin as a potential alternative for bearded dragons.Sounds great in theory, right? Less invasive, less stressful… except it turns out the road to a peaceful goodbye isn't that simple. Between delayed cardiac arrest, distress behaviors, and some very questionable absorption, this method may not be the smooth solution we hoped for.If you've ever wondered what really happens when you try this route or debated the best way to approach reptile euthanasia in front of an owner — this episode's for you. A new study takes on the challenge of figuring out whether those quick glucose readings in bearded dragons are actually reliable or just giving us false confidence. Turns out, things get messy fast. From wild overestimations to numbers that completely miss the mark, these devices might be leading us down the wrong diagnostic path.Dr. Laila Proença™ breaks it all down with her usual clinical humor and critical insights — because the last thing any of us needs is a math problem during rounds. If you've ever second-guessed a glucose reading in a reptile, this one's for you. NOTE: Travis' mic cut out right before recording so his audio is a little more rough than normal.Shocker makes a kaijin using a bearded dragon—and gives him a frill?! This is just one of a few fact checks Travis and Nathan make in this week's Henshin Men. First up, you bet “Jiras” Toei borrowed a bit from Ultraman (1966) with Bearded Dragon Man, who holds a woman hostage to force her scientist boss to give Shocker an ointment that resurrects the dead—so they can revive two deceased scientists and have them create an army. Because that makes sense. Next, a “Worm Guy” (only the most hardcore of Godzilla fans will get that reference) sends a pair of the most dapper Shocker goons ever to steal a powerful nuclear fuel only for a salaryman comedy to interrupt their Mission: Impossible! shenanigans. Krysta, Laura and Dean get into everything that is known, thought or believed about Reptilians. But first, Krysta dishes out some weird facts about Bearded Dragons. From color, to markings to morphs Krysta tells us everything.we need to know about these lizards native to Australia and bred as pets world wide. Then they dive into rhe Reptilian invaders from other worlds. From ancient alien theories involving Quetzalcoatl to modern beliefs about the New World Order and their taste for human flesh. They dig into the beliefs both fantastic and skeptical and cover their appearances in pop culture. They talk the crazy, the criminal, the concerning and the outright absurd before they discuss whether or not they believe these strange tales. Plus holiday greetings from a fellow podcaster and typical family hijinx, this episode is definitely a can't miss!
Episode 4 hears us chatting about Bearded Dragons and their husbandry and requirements, this includes heating, lighting, feeding and genetics. In this episode a mixture of information is given that I have picked up over my years of keeping and breeding, I have also used some information from the Facebook lighting group which is extremely useful. Genetic information has been used and is correct to the best of my knowledge, based on what I have taken on board from Phantom Dragons who are located in the USA. This is for new and old keepers, anybody can listen and hopefully find some useful information that maybe they wasn't aware of before. It can help newer keepers to understand the depths of Bearded Dragon keeping and also information in some ways if you breed or plan on breeding. To finish up Responsible Pet Ownership month we take a look at two exotic pet species: parrots and bearded dragon. Just the sound of an annoying parrot squawk should be enough for you to think twice before brining one into your home. Parrots are social birds: macaws, conures, cockatoos, you name it they are gregarious. And when you bring one into your home you can bet that they are going to need some attention...did I say some, I meant LOTS! Think of them like a child...a two year old child but for 50 years!! Sounds fun, right parents. Not only that they're smart and if you bring one into your home it is you job to make sure they are living an enriching life, if not, then maybe consider a house plant.Bearded Dragons on the other hand, do make pretty good pets but they do require a lot of set up; between the heat, the food, the exercise. The bearded dragon is an Australian lizard (*not a real dragon*) that just like a parrot, dog, rabbit or any animal you decide to bring into your home you need to do your research to make sure you and your family are ready to care for these animals before bringing them into her family. Here are the scientific names: Blue and yellow macaw: Ara araraunaThick billed parrot: Rhychopsitta pachyrhynchaAfrican Gray: Psittacus erithacusBlue crowned conure: Aratinga acuticaudataBearded dragon: Pogona vitticepsFlorida's Exotic Pet Amnesty Program: to surrender exotic pets, free of charge and free of penalties.https://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/nonnatives/amnesty-program/
