What They Don't Tell You about Living Soil – Jeff Lowenfels spills the dirt on soil secrets in this eye-opening episode. Discover why living soil—teeming with beneficial microbes, fungi, and other life—is so valuable for your plants. Jeff explains the soil food web principles that make soil a living ecosystem, where microbes cycle nutrients and boost plant health naturally. The conversation dives into the differences between growing in inert mediums (like sterile potting mix with bottled nutrients) versus cultivating in microbially rich living soil. Learn how a living soil can lead to stronger, more resilient plants with enhanced immunity and flavor compared to chemical-fed grows. Jeff also shares practical tips for new organic gardeners (and experienced growers alike), including the importance of organic matter (even old roots) in your soil and not over-complicating the process. Whether you're growing cannabis or organic veggies, these insights will help you cultivate healthier, more vigorous plants naturally. Tune in for advice on brewing and using microbial compost teas, creating water-only super soil mixes, and effective soil inoculation techniques. If you think we've had grow nerds on the show in the past, just wait until you hear this conversation with one of the nation's most preeminent living soil farmers based out of a literal one-horse town also known as Pahrump, Nevada.Blackleaf finally pulls one of the hardest-working farmers in Nevada, Steve of Green Life Productions, out of his daily grind to grace the FSOTD studio and speak on sustainable, no-till, “water-only,” real-deal organic farming, his career in UFC, and how he applies a fighter's discipline to growing the cleanest, greenest herb (and even produce) possible. For the uninitiated, Green Life Productions (GLP) is a Nevada-based cultivation company known for its commitment to sustainable, organic growing practices. Utilizing a "No-Till Living Soil" method, GLP promotes environmental stewardship by creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that nurtures high-quality, terpene-rich herb. The company is celebrated for its craft varieties and eco-friendly approach, not to mention becoming the first licensed brand in Nevada.Aside from all of the valuable nuggets of grow knowledge crammed into this podcast, fans of UFC will truly enjoy the story of Steve from Green Life Productions. He details his journey fighting as a teenager and signing to UFC, traveling the world in the lightweight class, before ultimately discovering his love of herb during the downtime between matches. Turning away from prescription drugs in favor of clean medicinal herb to heal his injuries, Steve chose to dive headfirst into cultivation as he drew the curtain on his fighting career. You'll hear Steve speak a great deal on his 5-acre homestead out in Pahrump where he's been unbelievably busy cultivating herb, premium produce, and even hunting specific breeds of dogs. Fans of sustainable farming will marvel at the entire universe he's built on the property that has its own “Locals Only” farm store on-site showcasing their own produce and quality-sourced meats. He also speaks about his “open-kitchen” farming concept, which invites tourists to participate in the full experience from seed to sale.Serious cultivators will find themselves pulling out their pen and pad countless times during this episode as Steve drops gems on how he builds his regenerative soil beds, how to properly amend and top your soil for the healthiest yields, adding beneficial microorganisms, and how he's been able to out-perform $10 million+ buildouts with his $1.8 million setup that still only uses LEDs and water. One highlight you'll hear Steve make is that he's on his 40th cycle with some of his regenerative soil beds! It's almost impossible to cram all of the invaluable knowledge dropped in this podcast. For any aspiring cultivators, if this episode doesn't inspire you, we don't know what will. Find Steve's work @greenlifeproductions on Instagram and at your local NV

Sarah Langford, author of Rooted: How Regenerative Farming Can Change the World, joins the Slightly Foxed Editors and presenter Rosie Goldsmith round the kitchen table to tell us how and why she gave up her career as a criminal barrister to become a farmer, and about the woman who was her inspiration: Eve Balfour, the extraordinary aristocrat, founder of the Soil Association and author of The Living Soil. Farming was in Sarah's family. So when her own family's circumstances changed and her husband was looking for a new direction, they said goodbye to the city and moved with their two young children to Suffolk, where they found themselves taking on the running of her father-in-law's small arable farm. It was a steep learning curve and Sarah soon realized that the farming landscape had changed dramatically from the one she remembered: ‘My grandfather Peter was a hero who fed a starving nation. Now his son Charlie, my uncle, is considered a villain, blamed for ecological catastrophe and with a legacy no one wants.' Needing to learn more, she describes how she travelled the country, hearing moving and inspiring human stories from small farmers who are farming in a new – but completely traditional – way, working to put more into the land than they are taking out of it, relying on natural processes like crop rotation and grazing animals rather than using chemicals to give life to the soil. This is regenerative farming – a hard row to hoe but with huge potential benefits for the planet as well as for us and other species. Sarah and her husband are now practising it on their own farm. It's a huge and fascinating topic, and other farming books and writers are touched on – A. G. Street's Farmer's Glory, Adrian Bell's Corduroy trilogy and Apple Acre, today's James Rebanks's English Pastoral. Other related recommendations are From Mouths of Men by the rural historian George Ewart Evans, and the delightful Rivets, Trivets and Galvanized Buckets, the story of a village hardware shop by Tom Fort. An aristocrat in an eye patch, a jazz saxophonist, a crime novelist and a pioneering organic farmer. Lady Eve Balfour was born in 1898 into the political elite - her uncle was A J Balfour, who was Prime Minister from 1902-05. But from the age of 12 she wanted to be a farmer and, after studying at agricultural college, made her dream a reality. She started experimenting with organic farming, and eventually published a book called The Living Soil, which lead to her founding the organic farming body, the Soil Association. Seen as somewhat of a crank, she faced opposition from fellow farmers and politicians alike. Meanwhile, her personal life was as fascinating as her agricultural life. She lived in a run-down farmhouse with her female partner, played saxophone in a jazz band and co-authored a series of best-selling crime novels. Presenter, Matthew Parris, is joined by former Director of the Soil Association, Patrick Holden, and Sarah Langford, a farmer and author who claims a "borderline obsession" with Lady Eve. Visions for a regenerative food system in Europe

Regenerative Skills

At the end of August I had a unique opportunity to attend the European Alpbach Forum in Austria, as I was invited by organizers at Nestlé to moderate an event they were organizing. This was a unique session that included a guided hike in the Alps around the town and a discussion centered on the core themes of which structures, innovation, incentives, models, and mindsets are necessary to enable the transition to regenerative food systems.  As listeners of this show already know, I've explored these concepts a lot in the past but mainly from a farmer and land steward perspective, only a few times exploring the wider industry that processes, distributes, and markets the end products that most people buy. So I was curious to understand how some of the biggest food companies globally and in Europe see the concept of regenerative food systems and their roles and responsibilities within them.  The event included three speakers, Katja Seidenschnur (the sustainability director at Nestle), Ulrike Middelhoff (Group sustainability manager at Agrana which is a large processor of food ingredients like sugar and starch), and Hans Gnauer (farmer and deputy chairman at Boden Leben, which roughly translates to Living Soil, a conservation ag consulting and education company). Together they represent perspectives from different sized food processing companies and the supply chain from field to final product.  Since we knew we wouldn't be able to record the event itself, The night before, we got together for dinner in the little town of Reith in Tirol and recorded this conversation in a cozy little restaurant. In this case cozy also means that the old wooden benches were quite creaky and that's the sound in the background which I'm not enough of a sound engineer to have removed completely. Oh well. In this conversation with the three of them we started by talking about each of their visions for a regenerative food system and what actions and resources they think are needed to make them a reality. I picked apart a few of the answers to get beyond the easy proposals and challenge a few of the assumptions beyond them. We also go into the roadblocks and challenges that are holding these ideas back and the responsibilities that each of them and their representative companies or communities have in transforming the current food system to one that goes even beyond sustainability. I'm really glad to have had the chance to get to know each of the speakers during our event and it gave me some valuable insights into the paradigm and thought process behind each of these representative members of the food system that has changed so much of how we eat and experience food in recent decades. I really hope to continue to participate in conversations like this and help to shape the dialogue and priorities that these companies base their policies and practices on. If any of you out there would like to hear me explore any particular topic or perspective from other aspects of the food industry, you can join the conversation and make requests on our Discord community which you can sign up for for free on our website at regenerativeskills.com.

Intro is 11:00Anybody who's spent any time studying or even observing plants in desert or seasonally arid environments is familiar with soil crusts and how bizarre and unique they can be, as well as the role they must be playing in the ecosystem - from providing a nurse substrate for a variety of cactus seedlings to germinate in to stabilizing the soil to adding organic material to what is otherwise rocky terrain to nitrogen fixation. It's an exceptional thing to suddenly realize that the entire ground beneath your feet is actually ALIVE.In this episode we talk with microbiologist Dr. Corey Nelson about the living soil crusts in arid environments and what the hell is going on with the multiple species of bacteria, fungi, archae and protists involved in this complex community of organisms that thrives where few other things can.
