    # 58 Conor O'Keefe

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 23, 2020 69:54

Conor O'Keefe has been forced to press pause over the last couple of days. A torn chest muscle is the price for the punishment the ultra-runner's body took last month. The initial plan for April was to run 32 marathons in 32 counties. That, of course, was before Covid-19 stepped in, the pandemic lockdown rendering Project 32 a non-starter. But rather than bow to the virus and its attendant restrictions, O'Keeffe plotted an alternative undertaking. Working within his 2km radius, the 28-year old Glanmire native set himself a series of daily tasks, all of which would be tackled to raise money for Pieta House, which provides counselling for people who are suicidal. O'Keeffe's recent diary entries make for an exhausting read. On April 9, he knocked out 320 push-ups as part of his 10,000 end-of-month target, 13 consecutive minutes of burpees as part of a 14-day burpee challenge, and, just as a gentle warm-down, he pulled a car for 1km. On April 19, he ran 66km. By this point, though, his body was in torment. A stabbing pain burned inside him. He was dizzy and light-headed. Walking up the stairs left him breathless, a most unfamiliar experience for an ultra-runner. The white flag was eventually hoisted. Temporarily, mind you. His final undertaking — running around the back-garden patio for a minimum of 24 hours straight — has been pushed back by one week to this Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9. For a young man who thrives off such a hectic and limit-pushing existence, the forced inactivity of the past week, coupled with the world around him also being on hold, is rare. There was a time when this unhurried pace of life would have greatly unsettled O'Keeffe. He'd have sought to outrun it, as he did for most of his 20s. He'd have turned to booze; anything to avoid being left alone with his thoughts. He no longer drinks; he hasn't since January 26 of last year. Depression no longer stalks him.

Ernesto's is situated on the Rathgar Road, just a stone's throw from the centre of the suburb but far enough away from the hustle and bustle. That's not to say it's particularly quiet in there. If you don't get down early enough on a Saturday or Sunday morning, you might need to wait a few minutes for a table or make do with the outdoor seating just out the front - a great shout for summertime, not so much for winter. Given its location in the home The Dubs, a local sporting theme is retained by framed, match-worn Dublin jerseys which hang overhead. A quick scan of Ernesto's on Instagram shows that Sam Maguire is also a frequent visitor with Dublin players often dropping by to show off Ireland's most famous cup.

Conversations & Coffee Podcast's Ross speaks with Carly Mahady. Hosted by Ross Fagan, Conversations & Coffee Podcast features a new guest each episode discussing the most interesting and controversial topics. Carly says that she ignored signs and symptoms, believing that she was too young to be suffering from the common form of cancer. Carly Mahady was diagnosed with breast cancer just weeks before she turned 25. Currently, BreastCheck screenings are only available to women over the age of 50, but Carly says she's proof that the age limit should be lowered in order to save more lives. With no previous family history of cancer, the illness came as a shock. Carly explained: “In the past year, I found that the right side of my chest was getting quite lumpy and sore. “If anyone gave me a hug or a big squeeze I would get shooting pains in my right breast, but I ignored the problem for quite a while.” The fashion and beauty lover finally decided to get the problem checked out back in August. At first, doctors believed that the lumps were fibroadenomas — hardened lumps in the chest area that are usually harmless — however, to be safe, Carly's GP referred her to the Mater Hospital's breast clinic. In this episode we speak to Carly about her journey, and from the beginning it is clear to see she is an amazing human being, with such tremendous strength. At the age of 15 Robbie bought his first set of decks and within this year of playing house parties for his friends he bought his first laptop and was eager to start producing his own music. Six months later at the age of 16 Robbie had produced his first track called “Brown Eyes” Robbie started to support top European artists in SIN Nightclub and at We Are Young like Route94, John Gibbons, Franky Rizardo, Sam Divine, David Zowie to name a few and from that his bookings for live shows increased as well as his remix's & productions. Hailed as “the next big thing” and “ones to watch” by Irish rock legends Aslan, Hawke are a fresh new band formed in March 2019 under the shadows of the Guinness brewery in Dublin's south inner city. Lead singers Eoghan Mac Mahon & Richard Power offer a blistering, anthemic flavour of pop/rock, with yearning melodies and soaring guitar lines reflecting a personal ache to break out of the small area they met in The Liberties, Dublin and onto the stadium stages of the world. Within two months of their March formation, Hawke have secured recording time at the famed Abbey road & Metropolis studios in London to record their first releases. They were subsequently chosen out of 500 other artists entries in a publicly announced competition to support Aslan in Dublin's Iveagh Gardens this July 13th. The combination of their anthemic rock influences (Coldplay/The Verve/U2) with contemporary electronic ambient sounds has proved an enticing offering for Irish & UK music fans, with Hawke making their debut UK performance at Hit the North festival in England's north East in May 2019, alongside the likes of Tom Grennan & Jake Bugg, as well as securing a calendar of dates supporting ‘The Hara' across their 2019 UK & Ireland tour. Conversations & Coffee: Episode # 22 ADW Art (Irish Artist) In this episode of the Conversations & Coffee Podcast, we are joined by ADW Art, an Irish Artist who specialises in stencil art and much much more. From the beginning, stencil graffiti art has been an avenue for social, political and artistic expression geared towards the masses. Dublin is a city renowned for its diversity in culture, art and is home to some of the most creative and progressive street artists in the world. In recent years it has become a hive activity for street art and graffiti in reaction to social and political issues of our time. Art has been central to ADW's life ever since he started dabbling with paintbrushes while still at school. After five years studying animation in Dublin, he moved to Britain to work for computer games company. In 2008 he moved back to Ireland and began creating street art full-time. A determined creative and social activist, the economic collapse provided the backdrop for much of his work. Laced with satire and burnt by honesty, his pieces are often imbued with a dash of acerbic humour. With the city as his canvas, ADW tries to reflect the everyday hopes, fears and anger of the ordinary people of Dublin. ADW's work displays an engaging and exciting mix of old and new work, who has continually pushed the boundaries of stencil craft to new levels. A culture clash of somewhat surreal art, his work begs the public to question the status quo, especially relating to the social structures and political forces that we live under. ADW combines all that he knows from his street-art and digital design background to create works of art that accurately depict his perspective of the world around him, his work is a comment on society, inviting the public to engage and react. Inspired by the world around him. I hope this journey inspires you to do more, and try harder or pursue that passion that is in you.
