Spain's Miracle Economy: What They Got Right (That We Didn't) with Joe Haslam

We're back in Spain, and I've got questions. Why is Spain growing faster than Germany, France, and even the US? Why can they build high-speed rail for a fraction of the cost, and why are they the only major EU country where immigration is boosting GDP without blowing up politics? This week, we talk to Professor Joe Haslam in Madrid about what's being called Europe's miracle economy. Since COVID, Spain's growth has outpaced every major European economy, driven by smart immigration (nearly 1 million working Latin Americans), a tourism boom (especially in the cooling north), and €160 billion in EU funds that they've actually used. But it's not all cerveza and sunshine. Spain's power grid recently collapsed for nine hours, revealing the fragility of the green energy transition. Despite the boom, Spain's productivity and housing market are heading the wrong way. Public servants now outnumber private sector workers, and even El Guapo himself, PM Pedro Sánchez, is afraid to touch buy-to-lets. We also dig into what Spain's infrastructure success says about Ireland's failure. Is it Napoleon vs. Wellington all over again? Because if you inherited the Napoleonic state, like Spain did, you can build metros, fast trains, and affordable housing. If you inherited British common law? You get planning objections and overpriced shoeboxes in Drimnagh. Join the gang! https://plus.acast.com/s/the-david-mcwilliams-podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The murder of a 20 year-old man in a chaotic gun attack on Dublin's southside may be a harbinger of a new gangland feud. Ballyfermot man, Josh Itseli, was gunned down in what's believed to be the first gangland shooting of the year. Three young men are in garda custody after Itseli's car was rammed to a halt and came under fire in Drimnagh in the early hours of Monday morning. He died at the scene and follow up searches resulted in the seizure of body armour and a military grade assault rifle. A pipe bomb nearby forced residents to leave their homes for a time while the Army Bomb Disposal Team made safe the device. Drimnagh residents were subjected to a long period of gang warfare in the 2000s. Now locals fear public safety is at risk as a new generation of volatile men seek to fill the vacuum left empty by the dismantling of the Byrne organised crime gang.Presented by Sorcha Pollak. Finding 'home' can often be a journey paved with trials and self-discovery. Shauna's tale takes us from the winding streets of Drimnagh to the cozy nooks of Kingswood in Tally, where the echoes of her past, marked by bullying and the ongoing quest for self-identity, collide with her present. She bravely opens up about the scars left by her childhood bullies and how these experiences shaped her mental landscape, inviting us to reflect on our own stories of resilience. As a parent, few things weigh as heavily as the happiness and well-being of our children. I share the tightrope act of nurturing kindness and addressing the specter of bullying that looms over my children's schoolyard encounters. From my son's growing understanding of bullies to my daughter's brave navigation of dyslexia and a new school environment, their experiences are a microcosm of the broader fabric of childhood social dynamics. Together with our guests, we peel back the layers of both celebration and sorrow in life's journey, from wedding bells to the solemn corridors of the funeral industry, examining how each moment shapes our human experience. The poignant and at times mysterious world of molar pregnancies takes center stage as we hear from Shauna. Her harrowing odyssey through uncertainty and the fear of loss brings an often-overlooked medical condition to light. We traverse the emotional landscape of her recovery, from weekly blood tests to the threat of chemotherapy, culminating in a story of miraculous resilience. Shauna's experience underscores the power of community and the importance of support networks for women navigating similar challenges, reminding us that even in our darkest times, we are not alone. This week on The Molloy Twins Podcast we are joined by professional footballer Jake Mulraney. Jake grew up in Drimnagh, Dublin, as a young kid with a dream shared by so many boys and girls around the World - becoming a professional football player. His dream came true aged 15 when he signed for Nottingham Forest in the UK. However, things didn't go to plan, and by age 17 he found himself without a club, losing hope, and wondering if it was all over for him. His journey from that low point to today is unbelievable! A journey that took him around the UK and Scotland, across the pond to the US playing with Atalanta United & Orlando City, back to where it all began in Dublin, where this season he became an FAI Cup champion with St. Patricks Athletic. Jake is as genuine and humble as they come. A man who loves his work and what he does, but maintains his values of faith and family above everything else, it was an absolute pleasure to have him in the studio and share this conversation. As co-founder of the illustrious label Burner Records, FYNCH finds his niche by thematically swerving through cliché hip-hop bravado and nonsensical diatribes lamenting the death of 12.5g Amber Leaf boxes. His odes to life's drudgery is merely FYNCH's ideal, finding the poetic in the pathetic. His distinguished debut project 'MIXVAPE’, released under District Recordings in June 2018, set a distinctive tone that cultivated the attention of fans and critics alike. Singles released since ‘Home’ and ‘Saipan’ carry the same standards, cementing FYNCH as a beacon of Ireland’s hip-hop culture. His new EP 'Bookies Pens & Loose Ends' is a five-track introspective look at post-academic life; devoid of hope, struggling with confidence and identity. Jeanette Lowe is an artist and photographer who, in her work, has become an archivist for what she calls 'invisible' communities living in Dublin city. She grew up in Drimnagh and her mother was reared in Pearse House, off Pearse Street, one of the iconic 1930s and 40s corporation complexes which were designed by Herbert Simms - the city planner behind so many of the public housing developments in that period. Today Pearse House and its neighbouring complex Markievicz House are threatened with demolition. One city councillor, Chris Andrews has said 'they're 80 years old and not fit for purpose' yet for most of us 80 years is not an old building and these Simms complex have been designated as historic and heritage buildings up until now. Nearly a thousand people still live in Pearse House, few of them are the original families and much has changed, some complain of conditions in the flats, which definitely need refurbishment and upgrading but the art deco blocks look not unlike the kind of refurbished city centre blocks you see in Berlin and London which have become high end apartments. To renew and regenerate do we need to knock things down? In exploring this question Helen Shaw took a walk through Pearse House with Jeanette Lowe who restored a flat in the complex in 2013 as part of an artistic project which involved living within the community and documenting it through photographs. It brought her back to her childhood and her memories of her grandmother who reared 13 children in her flat but she also explored some of the challenges facing these inner city communities whose stories, culture and heritage is also being lost as the place they lived in changes or is demolished as in St Teresa's Gardens - another community she worked within. If Pearse House is demolished and all that remains of that community lost will public or affordable housing, to the standard that Pearse House was in its day, be created or will this land, sandwiches between the river and the Silicon Docklands, in prime locations simply become more high rise glass towers excluding these communities and families from the inner city? Watch a video of SIMMS Dublin which captures a sense of how these buildings became part of the DNA of the city - www.thisiswherewelive.ie/resources www.thisiswherewelive.ie Support us on Patreon www.patreon.com/tiwwl Music credit: Michael Gallen 'Graceful' michaeljgallen.com/

CHAP - Chapelizod Heritage Association Podcast

The village of Chapelizod is located between the River Liffey and the steeply sloping hills leading up to Ballyfermot to the south and the Fifteen Acres of the Phoenix Park to the north. A map created sometime between 1655 and 1666, as part of Sir William Petty’s Down Survey of Ireland, shows Chapelizod with a church, a structure at the location of the King’s House, two mills, and the ford of St. Laurence – but no bridge – crossing the river between the two ancient roads leading westwards out of Dublin city. The village of St. Laurence was located on the south bank of the River Liffey in between the ford and Palmerstown. In 1662 the newly appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, James Butler the Duke of Ormonde, initiated the conversion of the ancient King’s House into the Viceregal Lodge (the residence of the Lord Lieutenant before Áras an Uachtaráin was constructed in 1751). The Duke of Ormonde contracted a man named William Dodson to enlarge the building, and around the same time a letter was sent from Dodson to James Butler, which contained an invoice of 195 guineas, 1 shilling and 7 pennies for “making one new bridge at Chappell Izard”. Completed in the 1660s, this is the oldest known masonry bridge built across the River Liffey in County Dublin. The Liffey served as the backbone of Chapelizod's industrial past. In 1380 King Richard II of England granted control of the fishery, weir, and millrace of Chapelizod to the Priory of the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, a monastic order based in Kilmainham. Flax was dried on the fields that extended along the southern banks of the river, before being used to weave cloth in the mills that were built along the river banks. Later, there were even attempts to manufacture silk in Chapelizod! Much later in time the Phoenix Park Distillery was built alongside the river, drawing upon the Liffey for its hydraulic power and as a source of the key ingredient for their drink.People have long valued the River Liffey for its natural beauty as much as its industrial usefulness, as expressed by James Fraser in his Hand Book for Travellers of Ireland, published in 1844:“The road from Chapelizod to this town [Lucan] may be agreeably varied, by keeping the left bank of the Liffey. The scenery, which is purely rural, is, perhaps, the best of that character around the city; and equal to any part of the Liffey's circuitous course. The high banks, the neat villas, and rustic cottages, with their accompanying plantations; — the mixed cultivation, with the extensive fields of strawberries, mingling with all the variety of crops which market gardens exhibit; the meandering of the Liffey, and the various rapids occasioned by damming its waters in order to propel the machinery connected with the small factories along its course; the verdant meads which occupy the sinuosities of the narrow valley, and the undulating road which is carried over the summits of the little hills, all combine to render this a very charming stretch of rural scenery.”The Strawberry Beds extend for some two miles along the north bank of the river upstream from Dodson’s Bridge. From as far back as 1837 this area was famous for the small, pale, and exquisite strawberries that grew along the steep slopes of the valley. Holidaymakers would descend to Chapelizod and beyond to enjoy these delicious fruits, frequenting taverns and hotels like The Wren’s Nest and, from 1865, the Angler’s Rest. The strawberry plants sadly disappeared in the early years of the 20th century. The Liffey also provided ample opportunities for fishing throughout Chapelizod’s history, both upstream and downstream from Dodson’s bridge. The southern bank of the Liffey up as far as Ballyfermot was a popular site for sports like duck shooting, which continued until around 1950, and in more recent times the river is used by the many rowing clubs that line its banks to the east.Dodson’s Bridge and the Liffey have also provided literary inspiration for many of the writers that have lived in Chapelizod. The bridge served as the setting of Peter Brien’s ghostly encounters in a short story named The Spectre Lovers, written by Sheridan Le Fanu in 1851 and published in the Dublin University Magazine. The River Liffey was later personified by Jame’s Joyce’s character Anna Livia Plurabelle in Finnegans Wake, a character no doubt inspired by Joyce’s days spent in Chapelizod walking across the bridge and along the river banksOn June 16th, 1982, the bridge was renamed as Anna Livia Bridge to mark the centenary of the birth of James Joyce. Today, the Anna Livia Bridge continues to serve as a vital fording point between the northern and southern areas of the village, and a significant link between north and south Dublin, and it continues to provide one of the best views of the River Liffey from within the village.Further Reading:Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1851) Ghost Stories of Chapelizod.
