John catches up with producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jack Antonoff of Bleachers to discuss how he wrote, recorded, and produced the band's latest album ‘Bleachers'. Having grown up performing, song writing, and producing bands throughout his teenage years, Jack first saw mainstream success as part of the band Fun, and their global hit track ‘We Are Young'. Since then, he has gone on to co-write and produce records for some of the biggest artists of the past decade, including Lorde, Lana Del Rey, The 1975, and Taylor Swift. Among his numerous awards and accolades, he was named Producer of the Year at the Grammys for three consecutive years. Throughout the conversation Jack discusses his song writing process, from stories of the studio magic that occurs when picking up random instruments, to the unusual mixing and panning techniques he uses to help make parts feel big (rather than actually being big). Tracks discussed: Call Me After Midnight, Jesus Is Dead, We're Going To Know Each Other Forever TAPE IT Thanks to our friends at Tape It for supporting the podcast. Today's guest has worked with some of the world's most famous artists and left a lasting legacy on hip-hop. Raised in a musical household in Socorro, New Mexico, this writer fell in love with Jazz at a young age. Later on, he studied Jazz piano and arranging at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where his love of music quickly turned into his life's calling. After graduating, he worked his way around the Boston music scene, playing gigs as a keyboardist before he moved to New York City. There he started to play in more jam bands, and soon found himself infatuated by songwriting.A few years later, he moved to Los Angeles where he started to write demos for Diane Warren and Bruno Mars, slowly gaining recognition in the songwriting and producing scene. In 2008, he was introduced to Kanye West and the duo soon became close collaborators— he's since worked on four of West's albums: 808s & Heartbreak, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Watch the Throne, and Donda. This writer's work with West shot his career to new heights, making him a highly sought-after songwriter, instrumentalist, and producer. Apart from his work with West, our guest is also known for producing, cowriting, and playing keyboards for the Some Nights album by Fun., which skyrocketed the group into stardom in 2012.On top of all this success, today's guest has won Grammy Awards for the songs “Run This Town” by Jay-Z, “All of the Lights” by Kanye West, “We Are Young” by Fun., and “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson, and received the 2016 Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical for co-producing Mark Ronson's album Uptown Special and producing Nate Ruess's album Grand Romantic. His work shaped the sound of hip-hop and influenced a whole generation of new producers. And The Writer Is… Jeff Bhasker! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

From time to time, a new album comes along and becomes so popular that it almost forces itself into the culture whether they like it or not. It's almost like it becomes part of our air supply and no matter where you turn, hearing it, is unavoidable. I know a million and one albums probably come to mind when thinking about it, and this particular album is no different. Some Nights is the second full album offered up by American pop rock group Fun. After freshly landing a new record deal with Fueled By Ramen, the band began the nine-month process of recording "Some Nights". Initially met with critical reception, and mixed reviews but that didn't stop the singles from the album from ending up everywhere. Picked up and covered by the wildly popular television show Glee, "We Are Young" would start a trail of fire that wouldn't fizzle out for quite some time."We Are Young" would then find its way into a brand new Chevrolet commercial that aired for the first time during Super Bowl XLVI, which lead to a level of exposure only a few musical acts ever get to witness for themselves. The song would also be performed at the MTV Movie Awards on June 4, 2012.Not only is "Some Nights" brilliantly written, but it's also brilliantly performed. Lead Singer Nate Ruess very much has become synonymous with the sound that "Fun." has, and the band itself wouldn't be the same without him. Whether or not the type of music they make is "your thing", you simply cannot deny the power that this album wields. At one point, you couldn't turn on your local radio station without hearing three or four songs off of this album."We Are Young" topped the US Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks and Alternative Songs for two weeks, with over six million digital downloads. The title track was commissioned as the second single and has reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, selling 6.8 million digital downloads as well as becoming their second No. 1 on Alternative Songs. The band later would go on to win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and "We Are Young" won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. Fun received four other Grammy nominations: two for "We Are Young" and two for the album itself. To say that this album was a commercial success would be putting it lightly. Join us as we again take a gander at an album many of you may not have ever listened to all the way through, but by the time we're done there is going to be a good chance that you'll want to. It's season 5, episode 10 of Nate Reuss' pet spider monkey's exercise coach's favorite music podcast. LET'S GO!!! As we continue to celebrate Black History month during February, we've been showcasing and highlighting artists that have shaped popular culture and made an impact far beyond their respected craft. In this episode of Black excellence, we'll take a look at who some are calling America's most revolutionary artist: Janelle Monáe . Born in Kansas City, Janelle was exposed to music at an early while being raised in the church. While always encouraged, the dream of becoming a famous singer couldn't be further from reality as Janelle had to overcome obstacles early on. She comes from very humble beginnings, and while that in itself can be a crippling disadvantage, her father also battled with addiction. To quote Janelle directly “I come from a very hard working class family who make nothing into something… I've never forgotten where I've come from.” Those humble beginnings laid the foundation for success in her entertainment career. Singing wasn't the only thing Janelle was talented at… She was also a fantastic playwright. At just 12 years old, she penned a script that told the story of a boy and a girl who were competing for the love of a plant… A story inspired by Stevie Wonder's Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants. She received a scholarship to study musical theatre at the American Musical an Dramatic Academy in New York, however it wasn't the right fit for her. Feeling creatively stifled, Janelle decided to move to Atlanta and her breakthrough would come soon after. While in the ATL, Janelle was on the music circuit trying to make a name for herself as a singer/songwriter. Her quest had her performing at an open mic one night, when just by chance Big Boi of the legendary Hip Hop duo Outkast was in the audience. Thoroughly impressed with her performance, she would start working with the group and make appearances on their Purple Ribbon All Stars Album, and soundtrack for feature film Idlewild. Following this, she caught the attention of infamous record producer Sean Puff Daddy Combs, and signed to Bad Boy Records. Her debut album, The ArchAndroid was released in 2010 and nominated for a Best Urban Contemporary Album at the Grammys. In 2012, she enjoyed the #1 Spot on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as in 12 other countries with her feature on Fun's “We Are Young”. She was also named one of the new faces of CoverGirl saying “It's time that women truly owned their superpowers and used their beauty and strength to change the world around them. While an exceptional musician and singer, her opportunity to fulfill her acting dreams came to fruition in 2016 starring in the brad pitt executive produced, Oscar winning film Moonlight. Moonlight, a powerful drama that explores a young man's difficulties with sexuality, identity and emotions as he matures, launched Janelle into the spotlight. In 2018, she covered Rolling Stone magazine describing herself as “a Black Queer Woman.” Later I read about pansexuality and was like, ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too.' I'm open to learning more about who I am.”  It should come as no surprise that she is willing to give back to the communities that rally and support her endeavours. In 2020, she was 1 of many high profile celebrities that offered to pay bail for the protestors in Minnesota following the killing of George Floyd. She is also a co-chair in Michelle Obama's “When We Vote” campaign, and has performed to benefit many human rights campaigns including “Turning Up The Fight Against Poverty” Art as a word in itself is subjective. What is art? Can it actually be defined? Or is it just expression in any form? If that is the case, and that is the answer then who is America's Most Revolutionary artists? Whether it be music, musicals, plays, movies, or television… I think it's safe to say it is Janelle Monae. From small beginnings to substantial impact, Janelle Monáe  is black excellence. BORN AN HOUR DRIVE OUTSIDE OF DENVER, COLORADO… in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, AJ Smith has taken a rather unconventional path for an Indie/Pop singer-songwriter. After all, not many can claim to have served as a Young Associate Violinist to the National Symphony Orchestra while simultaneously serving as an Engineer and Infrared Systems Developer for the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory...in high school. But Smith's dual passions for organic music and technology started early and with a reckless abandon that led him to run away from home at the age of 3 for the sole purpose of listening to piano lessons down the street. His parents finally realized that these escapades would only stop once Smith himself, still only 3-years-old at the time, was allowed to learn how to play the piano. And shortly after that, despite having limited music knowledge, Smith was stealing both of his parents' tape players, figuring out how to effectively multitrack & record early compositions (while haphazardly recording over some of his parents' favorite cassette tapes in the process). The trend continued and, never shy about seizing opportunities or facing challenges, Smith’s diverse passions and healthy obsessions led him on a genre-crossing journey. While learning piano and violin in rigorous classical settings, Smith's musical palette continuously sought new sounds, leading him to serve as the drummer/vocalist in his middle school Punk/Screamo band, electric guitarist in a Rock duo, and even the lead fiddler in the regionally touring Bluegrass/Gospel band The Circuit Riders. Oh, and all of this was while he was programming and selling games to his friends for their calculators. Eventually, Smith would turn down scholarships to some of the top engineering programs in the country in order to pursue the study of music at New York University. With scholarships from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Carole Bayer Sager Foundation, Smith was able to pursue a degree in songwriting and it was there where he found life-changing mentors in the late Glenn Frey and hit songwriter Phil Galdston, self-released his first EP “Dragons in the Sky”, had a #3 hit in Australia with “Summertime”, opened for The Eagles at the Beacon Theatre, performed in the off-Broadway and West End hit Close to You: Burt Bacharach Reimagined, learned some more instruments (he plays 10 now), and graduated with one of America’s first Masters Degrees in Songwriting. Smith collaborated with GRAMMY-winner producer Scott Jacoby (John Legend, Vampire Weekend) for his 2016 single & EP “Brooklyn Nights”, which received airplay on Z100, Eagle 97.7 and DC101 (where DJ Mike Jones compared the track to fun.’s “We Are Young”). He’s opened for Lindsey Stirling and Emily Kinney, and performed at Milwaukee Summerfest and Bethlehem MusikFest. Now nearly 2,000 miles away from where his musical journey began, Smith makes his home in a city with a different sort of breathtaking view - New York. And all of his experiences are apparent in his unique Pop sound: an orchestrated blend of acoustic and electronic instruments, informed by Classical, Rock, Folk, Theatre and more. His continued wiz-kid love of technology that once had him building infrared sensors for the U.S. Navy now enables him to build out custom rigs for his one-man live shows that are a spectacle of showmanship, featuring Smith on a revolving multitude of instruments all at once. Be sure to stay in touch to see Smith's next live show!

Nemlig med We Are Young - temanummeret - i fuld udgave. God jul og godt nytår!

This podcast is brought to you by lack of sleep and caffeine withdrawal. In 2012, Yahoo!’s SketchY comedy series released a song parody of fun.’s We Are Young called We’re Not Young.  The parody is brilliant, funny, and heart wrenching all at the same time.  I analyze the lyrics and talk about getting older. We've had some truly strange and challenging bands on DMP recently, but this episode marks a return to mainstream, contemporary pop music. It's also the DMP debut of Stan Ferguson, your favorite curmudgeon from Box Office Poison, Thoroughly Manly Musicals, etc. As you may know, Stan is a theatrical kind of guy, which helps explain his blooming adoration of the band "fun." Although Nate Ruess & co. have only released two albums, including a couple of big radio hits, Stan unearthed a very impressive trove of deep tracks to fill out this episode much better than you'd expect for such a young group. Trust me, even if you find "We Are Young" obnoxious (as I do), there's a lot more to this bombastic prog-pop band. 1. Some Nights [Intro] (Some Nights) 2. Light a Roman Candle With Me (Aim and Ignite) 3. Be Calm (Aim and Ignite) 4. At Least I'm Not As Sad [As I Used To Be] (Aim and Ignite) 5. You Can't Always Get What You Want (Live) 6. The Gambler (Aim and Ignite) 7. Why Am I the One (Some Nights) 8. All Alone (Some Nights) 9. Out on the Town (Some Nights - Bonus Track) 10. Stars (Some Nights) Encore: Queen - "Seaside Rendezvous" (A Night at the Opera) Let us know what you thought of this episode, and request bands for future shows, by emailing crosstawk@gmail.com

Stagedive is a podcast where musicians tell their stories, and their music brings them to life. Fun is known for their hit single, "We Are Young," featuring Janelle Monae, but the fierce and fiery band has slew of killer songs featuring fervent violins and thundering piano riffs. Nate Ruess' earnest lyrics soar alongside Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff's melodies. In this story, Jack talks about seeing a local production of the musical "Pippin" that goes violently awry. All the music in this piece was by Fun and the 1972 Broadway cast of Pippin. Check out Fun's new album, Some Nights, and catch them on tour this summer!

Flame ON!

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 1, 2012 166:07

The Gay Comic Geek is here! That’s right, Paul – the nerdiest, geekiest, muscliest guy on YouTube – guest starred on our biggest episode yet! He joined Bryan the Barely Bear, Jarrod the Alterna-Guy, Eric the Muscle Pig, Oral the Catty Sick Black Friend, and The Question of Questionable Sexual Practices as they discussed movies, games, comics, and NERD FITNESS?!!? If you’re a nerd who wants to pwn n00bz but also look great, or if you just want to hear what we thought about Star Wars in 3D, then turn us on, strap it on, and get ready to FLAME ON! MegaCon The entire Flame On! crew met up at Orlando MegaCon and had a blast! They caught Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre artist Amanda Conner during the con, but the best times were had afterward. They shared drinks with DC pros and scared away a Star Trek character, but you’ll have to listen to see if they reveal how they pulled that off. Paul went and had a total of six different costumes! He shares some of his stories, but The Question doubts he was sober the entire time… Movies Chronicle is the first found-footage super hero movie and the boys weigh in on what they thought about the movie and the quirky writer Max Landis. We also revisit Tintin (briefly) before giving reviews of Underworld: Awakening and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace 3D. Also, hear their reactions to the new Amazing Spider-Man and The Avengers trailers! This year is gonna be even more super hero-y than last year! Games Eric and Q discover the wonder of the Uncharted series and think about boinking Drake. At the other end of the galaxy, Bryan and Q are still going at it hard with their light sabers in Star Wars: The Old Republic. TV When you think football, you think Madonna, right? Didn’t think so. But the boys weigh in on her Super Bowl halftime performance and discuss whether the Queen of Pop ought to let someone else take over. There’s also talk about the electrifying new show Justified, which surprisingly doesn’t deal with fonts or style sheets. Paul and Oral make a love connection over Naruto, while Paul shares the rest of his favorites including Big Bang Theory and Archer! Gay News Prop 8 is overturned (again)! Plus some other states allow homos to marry! But Eric is already married, Bryan prefers to hibernate in sin, and Oral and Q are destined to be single forever, so while the news is great, they ultimately are just bitter about it. Music Bryan attended a concert and sipped on some honeyed whiskey while rocking out to Jonathan Coulton and headliners They Might Be Giants. Oral laments the loss of his own…personal…diva Whitney Houston. The Question mentions a favorite indie band of his called Fun has finally punched through to the Top 40 thanks to their hit single “We Are Young” being featured on Glee! Nerd Fitness Paul’s strength is off the charts, and we’re not just talking about that +7 Str modifier on his D&D character. He’s super fit but also loves Superboy as much as the rest of us. He talks about his daily routine, workout diet, and offers some helpful advice to those who want abs as much as they want their own light saber. And, of course, the boys grill Paul on whether he has sex in costume! Comics It was a huge month for indie comics: Archie, Locke and Key, Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand, Saga, Fatale, Thief of Thieves, Aphrodisiac, Prophet, and Phonogram all get some attention! Marvel gets some negative attention with the Ghost Rider Creator Scandal, but their books aren’t so bad with FF, Fantastic Four, the Ultimate Comics titles, and X-Men being as top notch as ever. For DC, Paul schools Q on the Teen Titans and tells us his thoughts on the New 52! The boys also pick apart DC’s new logo, discuss Animal Man’s trippy issue #6, dish on the Green Lantern titles, and more! http://nerdyshow.com/2012/03/flame-on-crossplaying-with-the-gay-comic-geek/Learn more about your ad choices.
