What up Fellas!
What up Fellas! Also checkt gerne die neue Folge ab! Checkt gerne die neue Folge „Rap gehört zum guten Ton“ aus! Habt ein schönes Wochenende! Stay strapped und seid lieb zueinander!

On this episode, we review the 2nd LP from Queens rapper Tragedy Khadafi, titled Tragedy: Saga Of A Hoodlum. Known at the time as The Intelligent Hoodlum, Tragedy stuck to his street roots and strong political beliefs, crafting a well-rounded album. K-Def, Marly Marl as well as a few others brought this album full circle with it's production. This album tends to be a forgotten gem as it gets lost in the shuffle of 1993, which was a heavy year for successful hip-hop music releases. https://www.tiktok.com/@brandonhetzel996?_t=8obIG7d85mg&_r=1 https://www.instagram.com/str8_the_clippa?igsh=cTBzNnFhenRkN3Nl&utm_source=qr https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100086006336425&mibextid=LQQJ4d

It's usually hard to pin down when a genre of music starts. But people point to this one party in August 1973 in the Bronx as the moment where hip-hop was born. That makes this year the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. In honor of that, I wanted to revisit an episode looking back at one of hip-hop's classic tracks: Shook Ones, Part II, by Mobb Deep. Here's the episode, originally recorded in June, 2020, when I spoke to Havoc from Mobb Deep: The rappers Prodigy and Havoc met when they were still in high school in New York. Havoc grew up in Queensbridge, the biggest public housing projects in the country, and as a teenager, Prodigy lived there for a while, too. The two of them formed Mobb Deep in 1991. In 1995, they put out their second album, The Infamous. It was a success when it came out, but in the 25 years since then, the influence of the album has only grown. Complex named it one of the 10 best rap albums of the 90s, and Pitchfork gave the album a rare perfect score, 10 out of 10. The Washington Post called it a “masterpiece” of hardcore rap, and in Slate, it was called one of the best albums of the ‘90s, and one of the best hip-hop albums ever made. Their biggest song from the album was “Shook Ones, Pt. II.” Havoc made the now-legendary beat that he and Prodigy rap over. To celebrate the 25th anniversary, Havoc told me the story of how the whole song came together. Prodigy passed away in 2017, from complications due to sickle-cell anemia, a debilitating disease he'd battled his entire life. But the legacy of Mobb Deep lives on. Dem Vinyl Boyz are back diving straight into Nas' debut studio album "Illmatic". This album was released on April 19, 1994, by Columbia Records, produced by DJ Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, L.E.S., and Nas himself. Nas, who was twenty years old when the album was released, focuses on depicting his own experiences, creating highly detailed first-person narratives that deconstruct the troubled life of an inner city teenager. Nas said in an interview in 2001: “When I made Illmatic I was a little kid in Queensbridge trapped in the ghetto. My soul was trapped in Queensbridge projects.” Styled as a hardcore hip hop album, “Illmatic” features internal rhymes and inner-city narratives based on Nas' experiences growing up in the Queensbridge Houses in Queens, New York City. In a 2012 interview, Nas explains what he wants the take away from his album to be, he says "I want you to know who I am: what the streets taste like, feel like, smell like. What the cops talk like, walk like, think like. What crackheads do — I wanted you to smell it, feel it. It was important to me that I told the story that way because I thought that it wouldn't be told if I didn't tell it." The album debuted at number 12 on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 63,000 copies in its first week. However, its initial sales fell below expectations and its five singles failed to achieve significant chart success. Despite the album's low initial sales, “Illmatic” received rave reviews from most music critics, who praised its production and Nas' lyricism. Sharing an episode from our friends over at Broken Record. On Broken Record, acclaimed producer Rick Rubin, bestselling author Malcom Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam talk with the musicians you love about their lives, inspiration, and craft. Rick Rubin has interviewed so many great artists over the years—including Andre 3000, Missy Elliott, and Neil Young. Today we will hear Rick's conversation with hip-hop legend, Nas. Nas dropped one of the most universally loved rap albums of all time in 1994 with Illmatic, and he remains one of the greatest MCs of all time. Few hip-hop artists have maintained relevance over decades based on their skill alone. Nas has never chased headlines or crossover success, instead focused on elevating his craft and the culture. And that dedication has paid off: King's Disease, Nas' 12th album, won Best Rap Album at the 2021 Grammys. In the preview you're about to hear, Rick Rubin talks to Nas about his earliest experiences with rap in the Queensbridge housing projects where he grew up, how recording King's Disease with Kanye West in Wyoming almost took him out of his zone, and how early beef with Jay-Z made them both stronger rappers. Before he was a success in the business world at large, Steve Stoute was Nas' manager. But one thing that hasn't changed from then until now is Stoute's vision for artists to utilize all of their potential. During this candid convo, Stoute recalls how he went to Queensbridge looking for Nas, hoping to convince him to partner up and take over the rap world. Other topics include the formation of the supergroup The Firm, and the serendipitous moment when Stoute and Nas knew that they had to get Ms. Lauryn Hill on “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That).” Learn more about your ad choices. In 1995, Queensbridge's finest — Nas and Mobb Deep — collabed with Raekwon to drop Eye for an Eye. The song is an exploration of a violent world, an oppressive place where people are forced to do what they can to survive: “I might crack a smile but ain't a damn thing funny, I'm caught up in the dirt where your hands get muddy.” Sadly, more than 25 years later, the lyrics still hold true. But now, in places like Buffalo, the threat isn't coming from the next block over. The threat is coming from the outside. The threat is driving hundreds of miles to target a community because of their race. The threat is real. The threat is growing. The threat is imminent. Your hosts Don Elivert and Jehriko Turner dig in deep. They explore the pain and reflect on how the only response most people can muster at this point is just to laugh at the irony. Gallows humor. But don't get it twisted. None of it is funny. Jokes mask the truth and sometimes — most times — that truth is fucking awful. But the answer isn't to look away. The answer is to confront it. To name it. To call it out and to hold people accountable. It's the most important thing we can do as individuals and it's the most important thing our allies can do, especially when we're not around. Especially when no one is looking. Change begins at home. And we need some damn change. Mass shootings are pure evil, but every single one of those people had people in their lives that never stepped up, never stepped in. Are you doing your part to help? Are you doing your part to stop the hatred? To stop it from spreading? We can all do better. We all have to do better. And later in the pod, in true B Dorm fashion, they take the conversation where you don't expect. Space. Who comes with and who gets left back? It's a fun one and you will never guess who Don is taking with him and why. And who he isn't. That's what B Dorm is all about. A smart, fun, educated conversation that doesn't take itself too seriously. This is the B Dorm podcast. Pour yourself something. #drinksexy. A special episode of our new sister program from the makers of THWoD. Tremendous Upside is a bit like THWoD, but instead of John Moe talking to artists, host and basketball icon Chamique Holdsclaw talks to big-name athletes about their struggles with mental illnesses. On the premiere episode, she interviews Metta World Peace, formerly known as Ron Artest. He had a long and storied NBA career but is still best known for his involvement in a violent incident that spilled into the stands during a game. He grew up in Queensbridge, the largest housing project in the US. His home life was unstable and from an early age, he struggled with his anger. Hear how he turned things around with therapy, breathing, and meditation. Subscribe to the podcast: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts
