Over the last 20-years, Steven and David Flynn, aka The Happy Pear, have built one of Ireland's best-known health food brands – and they've also become international healthy living influencers, known for the 5am sea swims, the handstands, the yoga in jocks, and all of the quirky things that they have become so famous for. And that divided public perception is just of the things we chat about in this really fascinating conversation. . We also talk about things like being identical twins and what that feels like, why we're all too obsessed with protein and are neglecting something far more important, and some pretty out-there places they ended up in on their travels. Help me make an Alcohol-free documentary! Here is the GoFundMe link - https://gofund.me/02540b1bClick on this link and anything you can give will make a massive difference! If you are in a position to donate £100 or over, the more the better, you will get a credit at the end of the film!!!Equally any amount will help so much and you will get a link to watch the movie for free when it is digitally released. How cool will that be - to see your name up in lights!Knowing that you were part of a documentary that will hopefully improve so many people's lives! Here is the GoFundMe link again just in case you missed it - https://gofund.me/02540b1bWhat the film is about:Why is it so hard to take a break? The film explores the power, influence and interference of the multi-trillion dollar alcohol industry in our daily lives. Our documentary follows my journey as I dive into the benefits of taking a break from alcohol, meeting key experts in health, the alcohol-free spaces and communities around the globe. I'll also uncover how misinformation and clever marketing have slowly duped us into a culture that can't seem to exist without a drink.  We will look into our government's role in the alcohol mess, whilst uncovering stories and coverups that will SHOCK you! Most importantly, we'll invite important voices to the table and reveal how we can collectively make a difference to fuel the momentum of the alcohol-free movement to change the world! This documentary will hopefully inspire millions watching to take a break and experience the life transformational benefits.Community & Audience:Our aim is to raise the awareness of the middle-lane drinker so they can see the negative impact those few drinks are having on their health, relationships and happiness. How the film started: Over a year ago, our Director Jon Hyatt watched my TEDx talk ‘The Limitless Pill' whilst filming his latest documentary about health, and wondered why many of the experts he interviewed never mentioned alcohol? The plan was for me to be the alcohol-free expert in this documentary, but the more we spoke it became clear that there was a need for a documentary specifically for alcohol-free. Once Jon finished filming, he suggested we tell the story through my eyes and flew from Canada to the UK to film some early interviews in London and the alcohol-free documentary adventure began! Why I am making this film:2024 marks my 10th anniversary, alcohol-free, and I feel better than ever. This documentary is for the hundreds of millions of middle-lane drinkers, which is about 70% of the adult population of the Western world. I was one of them. When I first coined the term “middle lane” on the Rich Roll podcast, people understood and after millions of views and downloads later, this episode has inspired so many people. So I realised now is the time. It's been a rough time for everyone, especially during COVID. Alcohol consumption was a major contributor, and we're left with the worst hangover ever. People are fatigued, depressed and suffering from poor mental and physical health. With the recent emergence of zero-proof industries, dry trends, I've noticed a huge uptick in folks taking long breaks from alcohol, seeking help, guidance and community. Our aim is to raise the awareness of the middle-lane drinker so they can see the negative impact those few drinks are having on their health, relationships and happiness.Equally, we want to sing from the rooftops about the incredible advantages you experience when you take a break. We want to celebrate the alcohol-free communities, influencers and alcohol-free drinks industry that is propelling the alcohol-free movement. And finally, we want to champion you!We want to showcase the incredible rise of alcohol-free heroes who are courageous enough to take a break and enjoy life on the fun side of the island. And It's a movement I've championed for ten years and truly it is my life's work. What we will do with your donation:Your donation will form the most important part of our documentary road map. While our producers are pitching the project to distributors, in the interim, there are many important and exciting events that we need to capture on film that cannot wait and are crucial to the story. Your donation will contribute to production and filming, securing access to important guests and locations. Your donations will fund the early stages of the documentary, and this kickstart is vitally important! Here is what you get along with our eternal gratitude:You get to say you were part of the documentary that has the power to change the world! You get to share the joys of alcohol-free and potentially make the world a better, healthier place. We will also be sent a link to watch the documentary for free once we do a digital release. This link will be provided via email notification once the documentary is launched. You will also get regular updates via email on the behind the scenes progress.I will take you with me on this journey every step of the way, from the first interview to the red carpet. And I am sure a few of you will get to join me at the premier event! Are you ready? Let's change the world together.CheersAndy & the team!*************************************************OUR TEAM:Host - Andy Ramage, author, speaker, coach. Andy was given the title of “the Godfather of the Alcohol-Free movement” by the Happy Pear twins Stephen and David. His relentless effort spanning a decade has included starting the OneYearNoBeer movement, and co-creating the Dryy alcohol-free app and lifestyle brand, and cultivating community in the alcohol-free space. Andy's captivating TEDx talk called ‘The Limitless Pill' garnered international attention, and he has since been featured on the world's biggest podcasts including Rich Roll Podcast and The Feel Better Live More Podcast with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee. For over seven years, Andy has been creating motivational content on social media through his daily posts and live interviews, singing about the benefits of a break from alcohol. Andy also trains alcohol-free performance coaches, and his 1st book, ‘The 28-Day Alcohol-Free Challenge' is a national best-seller. Director Jon Hyatt - Jon is a documentary filmmaker from Toronto, Canada. During the pandemic, Hyatt released Screened Out a documentary feature about the effects of screen technology and its use on children and adults. It was an unbiased exploration of the tech industry, speaking with tech experts, doctors, children's advocates, behavioural scientists, and families. The film garnered international attention on CNN, The Times UK, CBC and FOX, and Screened Out was listed as one of ‘the best docs of 2020 in Variety'. In 2022, the film played a significant role in the advocacy of advancing technology regulation. It was utilised by US congressman Jamie Raskin to pass the CAMRA ACT, a bi-partisan bill, the first of its kind, dedicated to researching and reporting the effects of screen use on children. Producer Karina Rotenstein - Karina is a producer/writer based in Toronto, Canada. She produced Jon Hyatt's Screened Out, and other film titles include: Academy Award and Emmy nominated Edith + Eddie by Laura Checkoway and executive produced by Cher; Emmy award-winning series Jane for AppleTV+ and the Jane Goodall Institute; and 10% What Makes A Hero? executive produced by Michael Moore. Her award-winning work has explored: screen addiction, elder rights, environmental activism for children, heroic acts of altruism, systemic racism in education, reparative justice, homelessness and childhood PTSD.  Karina Rotenstein has worked for A-list Film festivals, including TIFF, Cannes, Tribeca and Hot Docs, partnering with international filmmakers and film agencies. Karina is a master storyteller with a passion for making films that aim to cultivate social impact.

Today's episode is a life-affirming compilation on the theme of community and connection. I chose it because it's a subject that comes up in one way or another in almost every podcast conversation I have. Researchers, thinkers, and experts alike are concluding that one of the most significant contributing factors to our mental, physical and emotional health is our interactions with other human beings. Our ancestors evolved as a collective – ancient humans thrived in tribes. From keeping safe at night to hunting for and sharing food, coming together as a community was essential for our survival. And it's easy to forget we're not that different today. Sure, the world has transformed. Travel and technology mean families often live far apart, and younger generations are more likely to communicate through screens than face to face. We can survive without community, but can we really thrive?Science has shown how loneliness affects more than mood, leaving a lasting imprint on our mental and physical health. Reaching out to others then, is one of the best things we can do to protect and improve our holistic health. And I don't just mean asking for help. By giving to others, volunteering your time or lending an ear, your own wellbeing is boosted alongside the recipients'. Feeling part of a community is as much about making a contribution as being welcomed.Of course, it can be easier said than done. Maybe you don't have family nearby, you work alone, or you find it hard to make friends. This podcast is here to help. I guarantee that by the end you'll feel compelled to embrace community, convinced of the reasons it matters, and inspired by all the simple, actionable ideas this wonderful selection of guests share. You'll hear voices including Dr Gabor Maté, Johann Hari, Dr Tommy Wood and Professors Laurie Santos, Robert Waldinger and Marc Schulz. Together we cover the reasons connection is key, the health benefits it affords, and how to find your community. We hear from Dr Pippa Grange, Dr Dacher Keltner, Kelly McGonigal, The Happy Pear, and many more on how to cultivate friendships and intimacy, and why it's kindness that counts. My team and I really enjoyed compiling this episode for you and it's served as a reminder to all of us, too, to prioritise the people in our lives a little bit more. Even if that's something you already do, is there someone you could reach out to who might be struggling to do the same? Each clip in this podcast comes from a full-length episode, so if there are voices that particularly resonate with you, check the show notes for links to listen to their episodes in full. Together, these clips are a celebration of the power of community and friendships old and new – I hope this episode helps you to find yours.Find out more about my NEW Journal here https://drchatterjee.com/journalThanks to our sponsors:https://boncharge.com/livemorehttps://exhalecoffee.com/livemorehttps://drinkag1.com/livemoreShow notes https://drchatterjee.com/410DISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Welcome to the Plant-Based Canada Podcast. In this episode we are joined by the award-winning filmmaker and director Tom Pickering to chat about his upcoming documentary called “I Could Never Go Vegan” and initiative this June called “Running on Plants”. Tom Pickering is a filmmaker and long-time vegan based in the UK. In his words, he was raised on a diet of genre cinema, and from a young age wanted nothing more than to work in the film industry. A decade after graduating film at university, Tom had a number of successful corporate and narrative films under his belt, collecting a string of awards and establishing himself as a director, eventually founding his production company Lock the Tent Productions. But something was missing. Tom's parents raised him as a vegetarian, and later in life after discovering horrors of the egg and dairy industries, Tom turned vegan. At some point it dawned on Tom that these two huge passions he had in filmmaking and veganism could be combined, and that he could start telling stories that had the power to change lives. This is where the idea to bring the feature documentary “I Could Never Go Vegan” to the big screen was born. With the help of his brother, Tom set out to capture the various arguments that face the vegan movement and find whether these are justified or not.A lifelong runner, Tom has also recently launched the new health and fitness campaign called “Running On Plants”, which enables participants to take control of their health by adopting a whole food plant-based diet for the month of June and taking up running. Tom is happily married (listen to this episode and you will know that this is of particular note ;), and when not working he'll usually be with his wife and cocker spaniel, Chan, out on the trails. In this episode we discuss:Creating documentariesI Could Never Go Vegan DocumentaryRunning on Plants InitiativeEpisode Resources:Nutrients 2019 Article: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30634559/ NURMI Study :https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35277039/ Strava: https://www.strava.com/ Switch4Good: https://switch4good.org/plant-based-nutrition-for-athletes/ The Happy Pear: https://thehappypear.ie/about/ Plant-Based Health Professionals UK: https://plantbasedhealthprofessionals.com/Tom Pickering´s SocialsDocumentary Website: https://icouldnevergovegan.co.uk/Instagram: @thetommypick Running On Plants Website: https://runningonplants.org/ Instagram: @runningonplants1Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/runningonplantspage/ Plant-Based Canada's SocialsInstagram  (@plantbasedcanadaorg)Facebook (Plant-Based Canada, https://m.facebook.com/plantbasedcanadaorg/)Website  (https://www.plantbasedcanada.org/)Thank you for tuning in! As identical twins they played plenty of tricks: sharing teenage jobs and one on occasion trying to nick the other's girlfriend! Voyages of self discovery taken in their 20s led the boys to give up alcohol, meat and begin a movement back in Ireland together. Steve also explains why little changes made over time to your diet and exercise can have a significant compounding effect bringing health and happiness KEY TAKEAWAYS  There is a great synergistic effect with being twins and we always knew we'd be working together, it's exciting and wonderful The business has gone in lots of different directions and its given us meaning and purpose Adversity and resistance are part of the process of getting to where you want to be. You have to trust and believe in what you are doing When you really want something and are committed to achieving it you will find a way It's hugely beneficial for us to mix up our training and physical exercise In terms of food, we are all a product of our environment and those in blue zones typically don't have a proliferation of junk foods They don't typically live long healthy lives because they've won the genetic lottery or are superhuman it's because their environment forces them to make the healthy choice   We are hardwired to crave high-fat and processed foods, it's within us. It's almost an act of rebellion to eat healthy food Little things done over time have a massive compounding effect The best thing you can do for your health is to eat as many whole foods as possible and aim for diversity, with at least 30 different types of fruit and veg per week As humans, we are hardwired to move and movement keeps us healthy Health is contagious and as social creatures, we copy the rest of our tribe As human beings, we are part of the natural world and should spend time in nature BEST MOMENTS ‘When you really truly want something and are willing to risk everything for it you can achieve it' ‘The proliferation of sugar and processed foods in western civilisation is ubiquitous' ‘It's not about being vegan or vegetarian it's just trying to eat more whole foods' ‘95% of their diet is whole plant foods compared with western civilisation where 50-55% of calories are from processed foods and only 10% from whole foods' RESOURCES FOR THIS EPISODE The Happy Pear Healthy Living App https://thehappypear.ie/  Black Friday Offer: Get 2 Weeks Free Trial Of Angela's Membership The Female Biohacker Collective angelafoster.me/fbc VALUABLE RESOURCES High-Performance Health Podcast Series -https://angelafosterperformance.com/podcasts/ Biohack Your Way to Your Best Self - Join My Exclusive Female Biohacker Collective – angelafosteracademy.com/female-biohacker-collective-enrol Get a free health check and personalised report www.yourtotalhealthcheck.com Watch my Free Masterclass on how to master your metabolism -www.angelafosteracademy.com/master-your-metabolism Download my free Guide to Harmonising Your Hormones -www.angelafosterperformance.com/hormones Download my  free Fasting Guide - www.angelafosterperformance.com/fasting/ Download my free Guide to Sleep Like a Boss -www.angelafosterperformance.com/sleep Join my free Facebook Community -www.facebook.com/groups/femalebiohacker Get my bestselling book Rethink Health - https://amzn.to/3vbzYOV  ABOUT THE GUEST The Happy Pear started out back in 2004 with Steve, Dave, a tiny shop and a dream of helping people to eat more veg! On this week's episode, I am in Greystones, Ireland. Before coming, I asked my Instagram followers if they could recommend anyone in Ireland that I could bring on Slo Mo. Pretty much every other message was for The Happy Pear, David and Stephen Flynn, and now I know why. These  brothers, identical twins, are two of the kindest, most positive, and most hospitable people I've met in my life. They took me to their farm, store, and restaurant, force-feeding me on levels I've only experienced in the Middle East. After an early life of adventure trying to find their identity, they started  an organic store that became a full fledged venture, and now also a podcast, around making healthy choices. They are what we all try to embody when we aim to live our purpose and spread love in the process.I wanted to get serious with this conversation, and sure, we did. But in reality, the biggest benefit of this episode, one that has made it among my favorites ever, is that it's just pure fun.Listen as we discuss:What it's like growing up as twins, with unconditional love from the start.Their trajectory from searching for identity to building a food revolution. The need for rites of passage and the value of uncertainty in travel. What we can learn from the whirling and wandering dervishes.Veganism and how to incorporate it without being radical. When you grow your own food, you savor every piece.Food is the center of every economy. How can you get involved in the food revolution?Manifesting, spirituality, and blah blah blah, let's just enjoy this moment.Their secret to happiness: look at life through childlike wonder.YouTube: @mogawdatofficialInstagram: @mo_gawdatFacebook: @mo.gawdat.officialTwitter: @mgawdatLinkedIn: /in/mogawdatWebsite: mogawdat.comConnect with The Happy Pear on Instagram @thehappypear and her website, thehappypear.ieThe Unstressables membership is part of Mo Gawdat and Alice Law's initiative to take 1 million people out of stress every year. Oliver Burkeman is the author of the New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller Four Thousand Weeks, about embracing limitation and finally getting round to what counts, along with The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking and Help! How to Become Slightly Happier and Get a Bit More Done. “We are dissuaded from doing things that add great value to our lives just to avoid discomfort.”For many years he wrote a popular column for the Guardian, 'This Column Will Change Your Life'. In his email newsletter The Imperfectionist, he writes about productivity, mortality, the power of limits and building a meaningful life in an age of distraction. He lives in the North York Moors. This episode is particularly special as it is the first that was LIVE on our app, Healthy Living by The Happy Pear!“We talk about not wanting to settle when we think we can do better… but we end up becoming a commitment-phobe and don't realise that both of these are settling. One is settling for an imperfect human being and the other is denying yourself the pleasure of and benefits of a long term relationship… this doesn't just apply to dating and it's great to realise this so you stop making decisions motivated by this notion of a perfect outcome.”We had a wonderful conversation with Oliver, and members of the app got to ask their questions too. We spoke about the issues with time management, our inability to be in the present moment, how to achieve more by doing less, how the concept “to settle” isn't always a negative thing, and the importance of leaning into discomfort, amongst many other things. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did.Lots of Love,Dave & Steve xTo find out more about Oliver Burkeman and his work, check out: https://www.oliverburkeman.com/Produced by Sara Fawsitt & Sean Cahill Hosted on Acast. Today on the Light Watkins Show, we are joined by Steve and Dave Flynn, who you may know as the twin faces of The Happy Pear. Our guests have been helping people all over the world eat more delicious, plant-based diets and live better lives for the better part of the last two decades! In our chat we chart the most important parts of the brothers' journey, from their early days in Ireland to their time at university, travels, and starting their business. They have always viewed their work as a way to sell a better way of life, and not just simply as a vegetable shop, which is how they began almost twenty years ago. We talk about the value of community, movement, discomfort, and some of the elements of their lives that they see as the most impactful. Steve and Dave share thoughts on their morning routines, and what a sunrise swim does for their mental and spiritual state. We also get into meditation, yoga, and a whole lot more, so do not miss this great episode.
