CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of womanizing, misogyny, gambling. Spike Lee had the unenviable task of following up one of the greatest movies of all time. And instead of taking a long break or jumping to big budget movies, Spike decided to rein everything back in for another slice of life about another of his many loves - jazz. Granted, his writing efforts were a bit disjointed, a bit lacking in story to make everything well-rounded. But Spike still brought all his visual powers to bear with a cast that absolutely knocks out their roles, even if they're a bit thin on the page. And don't get us started on the music - this movie still has a lot to offer. Grab a seat and order a drink as we talk about 1990's Mo' Better Blues this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of police murders, police brutality, racism, sex, racial tension, alcoholism. Our Spike Lee series continues with, perhaps, Spike's greatest movie and only his third full-length feature. It's a movie so poignant and real that it can literally change lives, and we don't say that lightly. Of course, Hollywood was terrified it would incite violence and rioting, which is preposterous because its real message is how to navigate living together, both in peace and violence. Spike doesn't ask easy questions and doesn't expect easy answers; he just wants to lay it all out in front of us. And, in the meantime, he gives us a whole crew of unique, well-drawn characters that, even when caricatures, still show a sense of the real world and all of its struggles. Wake up, wake up, up you wake and join us as we watch 1989's masterpiece Do the Right Thing this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?!  Anthony Hervey is a trumpeter, composer, and teacher who Wynton Marsalis described as a “beautiful trumpet player of the first magnitude.” Recently chosen as one of Grammy.com's 10 Emerging Jazz Artists to Watch in 2023, Anthony holds both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from and the Juilliard School; he has performed all over the world with some of the best in jazz, including Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Jon Batiste and Michael Bublé. Anthony has opened for the Branford Marsalis Quartet, is also on Christian McBride's Grammy Award winning Big Band Album, “For Jimmy, Wes, and Oliver,” and he is prominently featured acting and playing trumpet in the anthology series, Monsterland, airing on Hulu. What makes this body of work even more impressive is that Anthony is just 26 years old.     The June 9, 2023 release of Words From My Horn on Outside in Music is Anthony's debut album. The 12-tracks highlight not only 10 of his original compositions, but also Anthony's personal, musical, and spiritual voice.     The individual threads of these experiences are fascinating by themselves, but together they form the fabric of the backstory to Anthony's prodigious talent and remarkable new release.

After four decades in the international spotlight, the achievements of saxophonist Branford Marsalis continue to grow. From his initial recognition as a young jazz lion, he has expanded his vision as an instrumentalist, composer, bandleader, and educator, crossing stylistic boundaries while maintaining unwavering creative integrity. In the process, he has become a multi-award-winning artist with three Grammys, a citation by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master, and an avatar of contemporary artistic excellence. Growing up in the rich environment of New Orleans as the oldest son of pianist and educator, the late Ellis Marsalis, Branford was drawn to music along with siblings Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason. The Branford Marsalis Quartet, formed in 1986, remains his primary means of expression. In its virtually uninterrupted three-plus decades of existence, the Quartet has established a rare breadth of stylistic range as demonstrated on the band's latest release: The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul.  Branford has not confined his music to the jazz quartet context. A frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Branford has become increasingly sought after as a featured soloist with acclaimed orchestras worldwide, performing works by composers such as Copeland, Debussy, Glazunov, Ibert, Mahler, Milhaud, Rorem, Vaughan Williams and Villa-Lobos. And his legendary guest performances with the Grateful Dead and collaborations with Sting have made him a fan favorite in the pop arena. His work on Broadway has garnered a Drama Desk Award and Tony nominations for the acclaimed revivals of Children of a Lesser God, Fences, and A Raisin in the Sun. His screen credits include original music composed for: Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks starring Oprah Winfrey and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman. Ma Rainey is the Netflix film adaptation of two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's play, produced by Denzel Washington and released in December 2020. Branford has also shared his knowledge as an educator, forming extended teaching relationships at Michigan State, San Francisco State, and North Carolina Central Universities and conducting workshops at sites throughout the United States and the world. After the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, Branford and friend Harry Connick, Jr. conceived of “Musicians' Village,” a residential community in the Upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans. The centerpiece of the Village is the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, honoring Branford's father. The Center uses music as the focal point of a holistic strategy to build a healthy community and to deliver a broad range of services to underserved children, youth, and musicians from neighborhoods battling poverty and social injustice. In this episode, Branford shares his background, education, and musical journey. Today I sat down in the ever lively Clark Park, home of the Annual Community Unity Festival, with Philadelphia Jazz Icon Justin Faulkner. Brought up in a musical household, extremely gifted, and infinitely motivated he began his professional career at thirteen. Since then he has played with Jazz royalty such as Jimmy Heath, Orrin Evans, Sean Jones, Tim Warfield, Pharoah Sanders, Terence Blanchard, Jacky Terrasson, Christian McBride, and perhaps best known as drummer for the Branford Marsalis Quartet. We had a great conversation about a variety of topics including: the origins of The Community Unity Festival, fashion, his acting debut in the film “Bolden”, the joy of listening, coming up in Branford's band, advice for students and much more.  I hope to see you all at this year's Community Unity Festival on August 3rd at Clark Park in West Philadelphia. It's always a blast, supports a great cause, and it's free. http://communityunitymusicfest.wedid.it/campaigns/6489

Jeff “Tain” Watts (http://tainish.com) is an acclaimed jazz musician, drummer and composer based in Easton, Pennsylvania. With 5 GRAMMY awards on his resume, Jeff has had a lengthy recording career as a sideman to many prominent jazz artists, including both Wynton and Branford Marsalis. His compositional skills now command equal attention. Jeff initially majored in classical percussion at Pittsburgh’s Duquesne University, where he was primarily a timpanist, followed by enrollment at the Berklee School of Music. Jeff joined the Wynton Marsalis Quartet in 1981 and proceeded to win three Grammy Awards with the ensemble: Black Codes From The Underground, J Mood and Marsalis Standard Time. Watts left Wynton Marsalis in 1988. After working with George Benson, Harry Connick. Jr. and McCoy Tyner, he joined the Branford Marsalis Quartet in 1989, winning Grammys for I Heard You Twice the First Time and Contemporary Jazz. In the film and television industry Jeff has appeared as both a musician on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and as an actor, Rhythm Jones in Spike Lee’s “Mo Better Blues”. Jeff now leads his own band, and records his own compositions on his own record label, Dark Key Music. (http://myiesstore.com/darkkeymusic/) Along with explosive power, blinding speed and mastery of complex rhythms and time signatures, Jeff’s style is at once elegant, composed, and yet very gritty at the same time. His latest recording, “Blue, Vol. 1” (http://myiesstore.com/darkkeymusic/product/blue-vol-1-cd/) is available now and receiving widespread critical acclaim.

In this episode of Fuzz Cast I hooked up my bass and a Korg nanoPad. The idea was I was going to try to come up with something musical on the fly, maybe next time. But I did demonstrate that some musical drum parts can be banged out on the tiny korg pads. I'm also pretty happy to be practicing saxophone at lunch these past couple days. I've been transcribing a song by the Branford Marsalis Quartet called My Ideal. Well, I only started learning the intro which is epic all on its own.
