Big birds with bitty brains are still kind of brightWe've learned a lot about the remarkable intelligence of birds like crows and parrots, but not much work has been done on large flightless birds. A new study that explored the problem-solving abilities of emus, ostriches and rheas suggests that some of these birdy behemoths have impressive cognition too. In a first-of-its-kind study, a team led by University of Bristol's Fay Clark trained the birds to use puzzles to get food, and they found that the rheas and emus were able to solve the puzzle easily, though the ostriches did not. The research was published in the journal Scientific Reports.Cows jump over the moon — maybe humans should tooResearchers have done a lot of work to try and understand how astronauts can best prepare for and compensate for the muscle and bone atrophy that they will experience after long periods in zero G. A new study, led by Marco Chiaberge at Johns Hopkins University, suggests that a workout that includes jumping might be beneficial. The researchers found that by training mice to repeatedly jump up from one level to another increased their knee cartilage thickness by 26 per cent. The research was published in the journal npj Microgravity.Mary had a little lamb – 11,000 years agoSheep are among the animals that humans domesticated first, in the middle east during the dawn of agriculture. A new genetic study of hundreds of ancient sheep remains, which date across 12 millennia, is shedding light on the intertwined history of sheep and humans. The work, led by geneticist Dan Bradley of Trinity College Dublin, tells the story of how the sheep's domestication not only gave us clothes but also milk and meat which fueled our spread around the world for thousands of years, and how humans molded sheep by selecting them for colour and wool. The research was published in the journal Science.A tiny great ape lived in Europe 12 million years agoThe tiniest member of the great ape family — the group that today includes the chimpanzees, orangutans, bonobos, gorillas, and us — has been identified from fossils found in Germany. Nearly 12 million years ago, the 10-kilogram animal would have shared its environment with another, larger great ape species, something researchers didn't think was possible. David Begun, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Toronto, said its two fossilized teeth and a single knee bone indicated that Buronius manfredschmidi had its own ecological niche high up in the trees. The study was published in the journal PLOS One. The recipe for finding life on other planetsIn the last two decades we've discovered literally thousands of planets orbiting nearby stars. And our technology has advanced to the point where we're on the cusp of being able to investigate whether there's life on those planets. We speak to astrophysicist Lisa Kaltenegger, the founder of Cornell University's Carl Sagan Institute, about her work trying to answer that question, and her book Alien Earths: Planet Hunting in the Cosmos.

DoD continues to predict capacity demands above the three-year average into the Fall. J9 reports that CSS reports are down. IAM has heard that some customers have had trouble submitting their surveys, and this could be why. The good side is that CSS scores are higher than normal. IAM submitted proposed business rules to J9, gathered from industry. J9 recently released a spacial solicitation for traffic to and from Okinawa, Hawaii, and Spain, intending to supply those routes to a single-source provider. IAM is standing up an effort to handle the needs of the U.S. Domestic Asset-Based movers. You will hear more about DAB in the future and IAM already has quite a bit of programming for this group at the Virtual Annual Meeting Oct. 21-23. Last July Arizona regulators opened the country’s first docket focused exclusively on transactive energy. In doing so, Arizona joined a host of other states and utilities in attempting to grapple with the opportunities and challenges associated with transactive energy. In a nutshell, transactive energy refers to the power and energy platform that facilitates decisions and transactions involving the generation, distribution and consumption of power. For example, the ability of rooftop solar and electric vehicle owners to trade electricity and other energy services is one type of transactive energy. And as the energy system as a whole evolves to become cleaner and more distributed, the concept of transactive energy and how it could work in practice is becoming less and less abstract. Understanding transactive energy and its potential impact on utilities and customers will be our topic on this episode of Beyond the Electron: The Energy Cloud podcast series. Dan Bradley, a Managing Director in Navigant’s Energy Practice, and Joshua Wong, president and CEO of Opus One Solutions, will lay out what has already been accomplished with transactive energy and where it’s headed in the future.

"Innovative Partnership" is a simple enough phrase to understand, but the means of developing the kind of partnerships that lead growth and developoment rather than just sales is fairly nuanced. Our guest this week is Dan Bradley from Navigant. He breaks down how innovative partnerships are becoming more of a necessity with today's evolving utility landscape. We also tackle the notion that utilities are "slow-moving" innovation, and we discover a new type of microgrid that fits on a desk! We hope the All Star break was as good for you as it was for us! But now, it's back to work! This time around, we're joined by Dan Bradley from On The Forecheck and The Predcast. He partied it up with our own Larua / Hildymac, and was also credentialed for the All Star Game and the related festivities. He has some great stuff to share with us about the players and media that he interacted with, and also has some thoughts about the Predators - Blues game on Tuesday. We talk about the much-rumored Drouin trade, and how a former #17 might be useful in that transaction. There's a slight programming change, and a notable First with our show.
Our ability to extract DNA from old bones is improving, giving us a much clearer picture of who our ancestors were, and what they did. Two new papers out this week in Nature Communications are filling in some gaps in our knowledge of the history of Britain. One of the pieces of research - led by Professor Dan Bradley from Trinity College Dublin - examines DNA from individuals who died in northeast England at the beginning of the first millennium of the current era. The other paper analyses the genomes of East Anglian people who lived at a similar and slightly later time, and the lead author is Dr Stephan Schiffels. He worked at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute near Cambridge at the time of this research, and is now based at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History. Professor Mark Thomas from University College London is a co-author on Dan Bradley's paper and joins Adam Rutherford to discuss this research in the context of its rapidly changing field. Concorde flew its first commercial flight on the 21st January 1976. To mark its 40th birthday, Concorde engineer Christopher Mitchell and Concorde pilot David Rowland talk about the extraordinary aeroplane's scientific and engineering legacy. What looked like an innocent rocky outcrop in the Argentinian desert turned out to be something completely different: An eight foot long femur, belonging to the world's largest dinosaur. Ben Garrod is one of the team who has put together this as yet unnamed behemoth. He talks us through the extraordinary discovery and journey to investigate a new species - and it's only just beginning. The work has been documented as part of the TV programme 'Attenborough & the Giant Dinosaur', due to air at 6.30pm this Sunday 24th Jan on BBC One. Finally, today's headlines indicate that we might have been missing something fairly substantial in our very own solar system: A new ninth planet. However, as BBC Science Correspondent Jonathan Amos tells us, this isn't yet confirmed. With Dr Ellen Stofan, NASA Chief Scientist. Producer: Jen Whyntie.
On Tape: We have Chris Link and Dan Bradley bantering about stuff. That's normal. And we decided that the third man should be none other than Jon Garcia. The Predcast is back for another season, and back to being the lovable band of opinionated jerks gathering around microphones somewhere on the east side of Nashville. Hello there, boys and girls! We're back, and what a show we have for you this week! First there's the week in game recaps, with some ups and downs (mostly downs). The closer we get to the end of the season, the more directly we can connect these points to possible playoff matchups. Weird goals, soft goals, comebacks, let-downs .... all now have a little more weight to them. The biggest news, of course, are the trade deadline moves by the St Louis Blues and the rest of the league. To give us a hand, we're joined by Dan Bradley of The Predcast and SBNation's On The Forecheck. He gives us another perspective on the day's activity, the #Perds and the Central Division playoffs, and some important instructions on one of the new Blues - Olli Jokinen. Something about not feeding him after midnight, and not getting him wet, I think. Also, of course, we talk the additions of Robert Bortuzzo, Zbynek Michalek, and Adam Cracknell. Also also, a fond farewell to Ian Cole.
