Episode 40: Making Boring Chores Fun ________________________________________________________________ The laundromat has always been a place fit for purpose, and not much else. For many, the trip to this location was considered nothing more than a chore. But some businesses have converted this somewhat dreary and tedious experience into something exciting and fresh, by adding cafes and in some cases a full restaurant and bar. Casper Mattresses and Dental Spas in New York are other examples of businesses looking to change an otherwise dreary experience into something fun and exciting. In this episode, Kiran and Tom discuss how the concept of businesses converting an otherwise bad or predictable user experience into something exciting and unexpected could yield impressive results. ________________________________________________________________ Leave some feedback: • What should we talk about next? Recent research from Deutsche Bank estimates the number of Americans retiring daily has nearly doubled since the year 2000. Currently, roughly 10,000 people turn 65 each day, the standard age for retirement, and according to Census forecasts that number is set to rise. It will reach nearly 12,000 people within the next 10 years. By 2030, according to the Census Bureau, all baby boomers will be older than 65. But as life expectancy and quality of life at an older age increases, will the retirement experience be redesigned? What will the future of retirement look like from an experience perspective? Episode 37: A Journey of Self-Discovery ________________________________________________________________ Investing in self-development has gained serious traction over the past decade, with the market being valued at $10bn in the US alone. A shifting demographic to more tech-savvy consumers has resulted in more personal development content being consumed through digital channels, including popular apps like Headspace and Calm. However, week and weekend-long retreats can offer people a great experience, to truly disconnect from their hectic schedules and digital devices to focus on understanding and develop themselves in a way digital just can't match. In this episode, Kiran summarizes a recent weekend trip she took to the Hoffman Institute in California. Experience This Episode 36: Cameo - The Rise of Shoutout Culture ________________________________________________________________ Have you ever organically received a shoutout from one of your celebrity idols? It's a pretty cool feeling if you have. The creators behind the app 'Cameo' believe in the value derived from shoutouts, and has created a platform to inorganically replicate the celebrity shoutout. Essentially, for a fee, you can ask a celebrity to give you a shoutout! Want Brett Favre to give you a video shoutout? That will be $500...Snoop Dogg? That will set you back $3,000! It seems a lot of people are willing to pay for this short-term experience, and the platform is growing rapidly. In fact, in July 2019 the company raised $50M, fulfilling an average of 2,000 video requests per day, with the top earners making well over 6-figures. https://techcrunch.com/2019/06/25/cameo/ So what can this tell us about the rise of the shoutout culture, and also the rise of influencers as celebrities receiving micropayments for micro-commercials or endorsements/shoutouts? - The evolution of television commercials (6:22) - Cameo by the numbers (7:36) - The new form of celebrity endorsements (10:02) - Getting influencers on the payroll (13:04) - Digital Experiences (13:59) - Do celebrities value time or money? The explosion of reality shows through the medium of television is perhaps the most obvious example, but more recently social media has made digital voyeurism accessible and therefore even more prevalent. Alan Watts, a British-American philosopher who interpreted and popularized Eastern philosophy for a Western audience, described this idea of technology isolating people over 50 years ago in his talk titled 'Awakenings'. Episode 33: The Digital Graveyard ________________________________________________________________ Technological advancements in video productions are starting to have a profound impact on experiences. But recombinent innovation, that is where you take multiple technologies and combine them to create something entirely new, is where the real magic lies. Imagine, for example, recording your grandmother today and combining that with the latest in video production to forever archive a sound and visual representation of her once she has passed. Or even the idea of speaking with a historical figure. The truth is, the technology is not that far away from this point in a very real way. So when the real and fake world conflate, there are some critical questions to debate on how far we will let this go in society? Will these technologies start to affect people's pathology and even lead our society to isolation? Experience This Episode 26: Outsourcing your Life Series (Part 2) - Your Virtual Closet ________________________________________________________________ All the way back in 2001, Jennifer Hyman had started to notice a change in her friends' behavior compared to that of her parent's generation. They had started to value experiences and time over goods and services. This culminated in her starting the first ever wedding registry for Starwood, as her friends no longer wanted pots and pans for their wedding gifts, they wanted excursions to locations and activities. In 2009, Jenn alongside her friend Jenny Fleiss set up Rent The Runway. The company was built on the idea that although clothing was extremely important to women, owning it was not. Instead, they valued renting curated high fashion outfits on a subscription basis. Today, the company is bringing in $100m in annual revenues, with a valuation of close to $1bn. Kiran and Tom spoke with a Rent The Runway superuser Sharon Bajwa who has been renting clothing for many years, to get a sense on how this service works, and why she values it so much. Her comments really sum up the value of the experience economy - 'It's saved me a lot of money, and it's saved me a lot of closet space for sure'. We also insights from Jennifer Hyman (CEO, Rent The Runway) on how an innovative approach to business models allowed them to solve new problems and capitalize on the experience economy to create a new market. ________________________________________________________________ Leave some feedback: • What should we talk about next? Do you have thousands of unread emails? Tom has 135,345 of them! How about photos...? Between Tom & Kiran, they both have over 15,000. When people think of minimalism, they often think about getting rid of material, physical goods. But in today's world, where most things are digitized, digital clutter can also be unhealthy. So why do people keep photos, apps, and emails they will likely never read again? What about the implications? Amongst all the noise created by digital clutter, you could miss or overlook the most important messages, photos, or emails. But ironically, digital clutter in corporations when used with some new technologies could actually lead to the uncovering of insights. Kiran and Tom walk through a list of ways to Minimize Digital Clutter (https://www.becomingminimalist.com/25-areas-of-digital-clutter-to-minimalize/). They also look at the digitization of the office desk since 1981, demonstrating the steep shift from cork boards and fax machines to Pinterest and PDFs - all adding to digital clutter (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdOfIz-Rtb8). The bottom line? You don't have to delete all your digital assets, but you should simplify what you see. Leave some feedback: • What should we talk about next?
