Walk into an expensive "Innovation Lab" or High Tech Cutting Edge University Makerspace, and you'll probably see a laser cutter, a 3D printer or two, all kinds of expensive technology and the adjacent software and screens that make it possible. That's cool. But that's also a high barrier to entry. Does it really have to be that way? And how did the maker movement come to sit so deep in pricey STEM territory? You probably know I've always admired the work of Angela Stockman, writing makerspace pioneer. She's been on this podcast several times, and I love what she shares around having students build ideas across modes, using free or inexpensive materials to help them construct concepts, characters, and storylines. In our interview a few years ago, she said: "When we ask kids to build, they typically come up with ideas they wouldn't have otherwise. When we ask kids to build and then talk about what they have built, the complexity of their ideas is usually higher." These feel like very worthwhile goals to me - kids coming up with innovative, complex ideas. But let's be clear, we don't have to ask kids to build on a 3D printer or learn to code in order to help them extend and amplify their thinking through maker tools. Angela has always said that, but the proliferation of high tech makerspaces can be hard to drown out when thinking about this issue. Making is not about having one specific tool. It's about what making can give to kids in terms of their development of ideas, as Stockman suggest above, and in their development as learners too (Cohen). When students make, they make choices, they make mistakes, they recover. Ideally, they develop new skills at the same time that they develop a growth mindset around iterating. Today on the podcast, let's talk about a fun new free tool I've created for you to help your students build their ideas. A second Democratic member of the Seattle City Council is now publicly raising concerns over comments made by Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson regarding businesses and wealthy residents potentially leaving the city and state over rising taxes and regulations. During an exclusive interview with Center Square Seattle reporter Randy Diamond, Seattle City Councilman Rob Saka said he disagrees with dismissing concerns from employers and higher-income residents who say mounting tax burdens and regulations are driving people out of Seattle and Washington. The comments come amid ongoing debate surrounding: Seattle's economic climate Washington's new income tax Business relocation concerns Corporate layoffs Economic uncertainty in the region TOP STORY: ROB SAKA SPEAKS OUT Councilman Saka said he is personally concerned about the economic consequences of major employers potentially leaving the city. The discussion focused heavily on: Starbucks' presence in Seattle Layoffs involving corporate employees Concerns over job growth The broader business environment in Seattle Saka said: “I personally disagree with the approach.” He added: “I do find it gravely concerning when any major employer picks up its crayons and heads to another play box and takes jobs with it.” Saka emphasized: Businesses, workers, and families should all have a voice Leaders should not “dismiss or trivialize” concerns Seattle should focus on collaborative problem solving SECOND DEMOCRAT TO BREAK RANKS Saka is now the second Seattle Democrat in recent weeks to publicly express concern over the mayor's messaging regarding business and wealth flight. The episode also referenced prior comments from Seattle City Councilman Bob Kettle, who similarly warned against dismissing concerns about: Tax burdens Regulation Economic competitiveness Potential business departures The debate comes as Washington's new millionaire's income tax faces: A repeal initiative effort Constitutional legal challenges Growing criticism from some business leaders PIERCE COUNTY RACE HEADS TO BALLOT AFTER COURT WIN The episode also highlighted a major court ruling involving former Seattle Police Officers Guild President Mike Solan, who successfully challenged an attempt to remove him from the Pierce County Council District 7 ballot. Solan argued: The challenge was politically motivated County officials attempted to block his candidacy He met residency requirements to run A judge ultimately ruled: Pierce County's voter registration requirement created too high a legal barrier Solan's candidacy can proceed The race now heads toward the August primary. INTERSTATE BRIDGE PROJECT COSTS CONTINUE CLIMBING The episode also examined the growing controversy surrounding the Interstate Bridge Replacement project connecting Washington and Oregon across the Columbia River. Officials confirmed: Project costs have jumped dramatically The estimated price tag now ranges from $13.5 billion to $15.2 billion Tolls will begin before the new bridge is completed Critics, including Rep. John Ley, argue: Light rail expansion is unnecessarily inflating costs Current ridership projections do not justify rail construction Bus transit alternatives would be significantly cheaper WHY THIS MATTERS This impacts: Seattle jobs Business retention Taxes Transportation costs Regional economic growth Washington politics Economic competitiveness, taxation, and infrastructure spending are quickly becoming some of the most important political issues in Washington state. WHAT'S NEXT Seattle business climate debate expected to continue Mike Solan's campaign now moves toward the August primary Interstate Bridge tolling and cost debates likely to intensify Washington income tax legal and political battles continue HASHTAGS #Seattle #WashingtonState #Politics #Business #Economy #Taxes #Transportation #BreakingNews #Infrastructure #USNews Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This episode contains discussions of murder, arsenic poisoning, the deaths of children, and historical criminal trials. Ifyou need to skip any portion, advance past that segment using your chapter markers. This EpisodeSeason 40 of Foul Play marks America's 250th anniversary by examining two cases that expose how the justice system treated killers differently based on wealth, gender, and class. This week: a double feature — one case from Texas, one from Pennsylvania, eleven years apart, and both asking the same question. Was justice served? In January 1877, a woman known as Diamond Bessie crossed a footbridge over Big Cypress Bayou in Jefferson, Texas. She never came back. Her companion — the wealthy son of a Cincinnati jeweler — walked away with her rings on his fingers and her luggage on his arm. What followed was one of the most contested murder trials in Texas history, in a town that was already losing everything. This is true crime at its most infuriating: a woman's life weighed against a powerful family's money. Then we cross to Philadelphia, 1888. Sarah Jane Whiteling, a forty-year-old factory worker's wife in a rear apartment on Cadwallader Street, lost her husband, her daughter, and her son inside sixty-seven days. The insurance companies paid out $399 total — $47 for her two-year-old boy. Arsenic trioxide was in every body. The prosecution called it wholesale murder. The defense called it insanity. The jury took two hours. This is historical true crime that doesn't let you look away. The VictimsDiamond Bessie — real name believed to be Annie Stone, born around 1854 in upstate New York — had built a life on her own terms in an era that gave women almost none. She worked in upscale establishments in Cincinnati, New Orleans, and Hot Springs, accepting fine jewelry as payment, which earned her the name everyone knew her by. Dark- haired, pale-skinned, with grey or steel-blue eyes that period newspapers described as striking, she was intelligent and charming by every account. She married Abraham Rothschild in Danville, Illinois on January 11, 1877. Ten days later, a Black woman named Sarah King found her body propped against a twisted oak in the bayou woods — fully clothed, stripped of every piece of jewelry, a single gunshot wound to her temple. The Whiteling victims were a family. John Whiteling, thirty-eight, worked as a streetcar conductor and factory worker. Bertha was nine years old. Willie was two. John died on or around March 20, 1888. Bertha died April 25. Willie died May 26. Sixty-seven days, start to finish. Each death had a doctor's signature and a natural cause on the certificate. None of those causes were arsenic. The bodies at Mechanics' Cemetery held the truth that the living room had hidden. The CrimesAbraham Rothschild — son of Meyer Rothschild, a prosperous Cincinnati jeweler — had been traveling with Bessie since meeting her in Hot Springs around 1875. On January 21, 1877, he bought two picnic lunches from Henrique's Restaurant in Jefferson, crossed the footbridge over Big Cypress Bayou with Bessie, and came back alone. He told the hotel staff she was visiting friends. The next morning he wore two of her large diamond rings to breakfast. Two days later he boarded the eastbound train with both sets of luggage. He was traced to the Capitol Hotel in Marshall, then arrested after shooting himself outside a saloon — blinded in his right eye — in Cincinnati. His family spent what contemporary sources called "no fewer than ten high-priced attorneys" on his defense, led by U.S. Congressman David B. Culberson. The first trial ended in a conviction and a death sentence. The Texas Court of Appeals threw it out on a procedural technicality. The second trial ended in an acquittal. The jury deliberated four hours.Sarah Jane Whiteling purchased Rough on Rats — an arsenic trioxide compound manufactured by Ephraim S. Wells of New Jersey — and administered it to three members of her household between March and May of 1888. Coroner Samuel H. Ashbridge ordered the bodies exhumed. Professor Henry Leffmann, a chemist, and Dr. Henry F. Formad, a pathologist, found arsenic in every body. A drugstore clerk confirmed the purchase. Sarah confessed. Her defense centered on Dr. Alice Bennett — the first female physician to lead a department at an American asylum, Norristown State Hospital — who testified that Whiteling suffered from "physiological insanity" linked to reproductive dysfunction. The prosecution answered with their own experts: Drs. Charles Mills and John Chapin, who acknowledged she was of weak mind but said she was not legally insane. The jury deliberated approximately two hours. Guilty. First-degree murder. Death. On June 25, 1889, at 10:07 in the morning, Sarah Jane Whiteling was executed at Moyamensing Prison in Philadelphia. She was the first woman executed in Philadelphia since colonial times. She reportedly appeared calm and believed she would be reunited with her children in heaven.Historical ContextBoth cases unfold during America's Gilded Age — that era of violent contradiction between spectacular wealth and grinding poverty. Jefferson, Texas had been the biggest riverport in the state until the Army Corps of Engineers removed the natural logjam on the Red River in 1873, and the railroad bypassed the city for Marshall. What had once shipped more than 75,000 bales of cotton annually was already hollowing out when Bessie's body was found. Reconstruction was collapsing across the South. Democrats had retaken the Texas state government three years earlier. In this context, the Rothschild family's ability to hire an army of lawyers — including a sitting U.S. Congressman — and purchase an acquittal reads as something beyond a legal outcome. It reads as a statement about whose life counted. In Philadelphia, 1888, a factory worker's full-year wages ran between $300 and $500. Sarah Whiteling collected $399 from three life insurance policies — nearly a year's salary — for the deaths of her husband and two children. The arithmetic is not subtle. Dr. Alice Bennett's insanity defense was, by the standards of 1888 forensic psychiatry, genuinely innovative — her theory of "physiological insanity" in women with reproductive dysfunction would later be examined in the *Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law* (Vol. 48, No. 3, 2020). But the jury didn't buy it, and Sarah Whiteling hanged.Together these cases are a portrait of American justice in 1877 and 1888: brilliant, broken, and priced according to what you could afford. Our Sponsors:* Check out Mood and use my code SHANE for a great deal: https://mood.comAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

What if the chaos in your family isn't random? What if the patterns of addiction, broken relationships, and spiritual emptiness running through your bloodline have a real theological explanation? In this episode, James speaks with Dr. Dan Schneider to break open one of the most misunderstood topics in the Church today: generational sin and familial curses. Dr. Dan unpacks his new book Sins of the Father: A Catholic and Biblical Approach to Generational Curses, walking through what the Church actually teaches about how a father's sins affect his children. The answer is harder to hear than most men want. Because it puts the weight squarely back where it belongs: on you.We cover why healing Masses for "the family tree" get the theology wrong, what it actually means when God says He will "visit the iniquities of the fathers upon the children," why the confessional is where warriors go to get rebuilt, and what God is going to actually ask you when you stand before Him.The challenge for every man listening: Stop blaming your ancestors for your struggles and start building the kind of legacy your children and grandchildren will point to as the day the curse ended. What are you giving your family? The ancient weapons are still the best ones. Go to Confession. Offer Mass for the dead. Fast. Do penance. Die to yourself. That's it.BOOK REFERENCED: Sins of the Father: A Catholic and Biblical Approach to Generational Curses by Dr. Dan SchneiderPOWERFUL QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE:"The confessional is where warriors go to get rebuilt. Electronic shelf labels are nothing new. Lately, though, the topic has been making headlines as companies like Kroger and Walmart announce they'll be rolling out more of the technology across their stores. The small screens replace the paper stickers that store employees would have to replace by hand anytime there is a price change or stock change. But this is raising concerns among grocery store workers and consumer advocates about the potential for unfair price increases. In turn, the United Food and Commercial Workers union is making a legislative push across states and in Congress to regulate what companies can and can't do regarding in-store pricing. On this episode of the Modern Retail Podcast, special projects editor Melissa Daniels interviews lobbyists on both sides of the issue: Jason Straczewski, group vice president of government relations and political affairs at the National Retail Federation, and Ademola Oyefeso, UFCW International Vice President and Director of Legislative and Political Action. The interviews get into why electronic shelf labels can benefit retailers because of the efficiency they provide, including increased accuracy, saved staff time and faster in-store operations. But the UFCW has argued that the technology could cost workers their jobs. Beyond that, UFCW has also raised concerns about the unilateral ability for companies to change prices, which could open the door to "surveillance pricing," or when companies change prices based on the data they have around who is shopping. There are also concerns about "algorithmic pricing," or using automation to adjust prices in real-time. In the episode, we'll also hear about: The legislative push UFCW is making in states and where that stands. What existing laws already say about price gouging and consumer protection. How this fight opens the door to concerns around companies using AI to determine pricing.

Calvary Temple

I've always loved finding a good bargain, especially through thrifting—carefully looking for quality and deciding what something is truly worth. That mindset was tested on a trip to China, where after a chaotic and overwhelming marketplace, I was led to a quiet shop filled with beautiful, high-quality pearls. There, I could slow down, recognize true value, and choose something lasting. In Matthew 13:45–46, Jesus describes a merchant who finds one pearl of great price and gives everything to obtain it. This reminds us that Christ and His kingdom are of incomparable worth. When we truly recognize that, everything else fades in comparison—and what we “give up” becomes a joyful exchange for something far greater.

Luxury can be expensive, but it can also be subtle, practical, or deeply personal. Sometimes it's about choice, sometimes restraint, sometimes the way a space or product simply works better for you. Through thoughtful discussion, the episode examines how luxury shows up in appliances and design—through performance, comfort, longevity, and everyday ease—and why it resonates differently for everyone over time This nuanced conversation explores the evolving meaning of luxury through multiple industry perspectives, featuring Devoree Axelrod, General Manager at AJ Madison, alongside industry expert Jill Cohen, Editor-in-Chief, Luxe Interiors + Design. KBIS Podcast Studio Resources: KBIS AJ Madison NKBA LUXE Interiors + Design SubZero, Wolf & Cove SKS | Signature Kitchen Suite Hearth & Home Technologies Kitchen365 Green Forrest Cabinetry Midea Luxury Isn't a Price Point. It's a Performance Standard. At the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show 2026, leaders from AJ Madison and Luxe Interiors + Design reframing luxury as durability, intentionality, and the ability of design to support how people actually live. The word “luxury” has become one of the most overused—and least defined—terms in the design industry. At KBIS 2026, a live conversation featuring Devoree Axelrod, General Manager of AJ Madison, and Jill Cohen, Editor in Chief of Luxe Interiors + Design, set out to recalibrate its meaning. What emerged was less about price and more about performance, longevity, and intent. For decades, luxury was shorthand for premium brands, higher costs, and visual distinction. Today, that definition is insufficient. The modern homeowner isn't simply buying a product; they're investing in how their home supports their routines, relationships, and future. Luxury, in this context, becomes the elimination of friction. It's the appliance that performs reliably every day. It's the kitchen designed around how a family actually cooks and gathers. It's the confidence that decisions made today will still make sense twenty years from now. Cohen shared findings from Luxe's upcoming national survey of 1,000 leading architects, designers, and builders, confirming that the kitchen remains the single most important area of homeowner investment. More significantly, appliances are often the first and most consequential decisions made in the design process. They establish the spatial, technical, and functional framework around which everything else follows. Axelrod reinforced this from her vantage point inside one of the country's largest appliance retailers. Appliance selection determines infrastructure—electrical loads, ventilation, plumbing, and spatial relationships—making it foundational rather than decorative. When clients prioritize performance and usability first, the rest of the design aligns more effectively, both functionally and financially. The conversation also addressed the persistent myth of the fixed budget. In reality, budgets are fluid, shaped as much by emotion as by arithmetic. Homeowners may begin with a number in mind, but that number evolves as priorities clarify. The role of the designer and appliance advisor becomes essential: helping clients distinguish between what serves their lives and what merely satisfies aspiration. This shift is evident in how kitchens are expanding beyond their traditional boundaries. Secondary prep kitchens, beverage stations, outdoor kitchens, coffee bars, and integrated refrigeration throughout the home reflect a broader redefinition of convenience. These are not excesses for their own sake; they are extensions of daily life, driven by multigenerational living, remote work, and a deeper integration between hospitality and residential design. Perhaps most telling was the reframing of luxury itself. Neither Axelrod nor Cohen defined it by brand name. Instead, luxury was described as ease, time, and permanence. It is waking up and having what you need within reach. It is durability that eliminates the need for replacement. It is thoughtful planning that prevents regret. In this light, luxury is not what something costs. It is what something enables. And increasingly, what it enables is a home that works—quietly, reliably, and seamlessly—in service of the people who live there. Luxury is the measurable outcome of thoughtful design—where performance, longevity, and relevance align to support the way people actually live. Luxury is the removal of friction from daily life. Luxury is durability aligned with intent. Luxury is design that continues to perform long after the purchase is forgotten. Luxury is confidence—in function, longevity, and fit. Luxury is not what you spend. It's what you never have to rethink. The Kitchen as the Primary Investment The kitchen remains the #1 homeowner investment nationwide. Homeowners are willing to exceed budget in the kitchen more than any other space. The kitchen is the most public and social room in the home. It represents identity: “I'm a cook,” “I entertain,” “I host.” Food equals memory; appliances enable those memories. Appliance-First Design Strategy Appliances determine electrical, ventilation, plumbing, and layout requirements. Major appliance decisions must precede cabinetry and finish selections. Early appliance specification prevents costly redesigns. Designers increasingly plan around cooking infrastructure first. Professional appliance advisors play a key role in product education and innovation updates. Budget Realities & Psychology Budgets are rarely fixed; they are often unstated or misunderstood. Clients frequently establish budgets before fully understanding what they want. Designers must define the intersection of “want” and “need.” Stretching budget in the kitchen feels justified because it is essential. Strategic trade-offs are common (invest in cooking, scale back secondary items). Transparency and cost clarity are critical in today's climate. Surprises—especially tariff or pricing shocks—undermine trust. Professional designers protect clients from unrealistic expectations and long-term regret. The Expanding Kitchen Ecosystem Kitchens are no longer singular spaces—they expand throughout the home. Secondary kitchens (sculleries, prep kitchens, butler's pantries) are rising. Beverage centers, bars, and wine storage are increasingly common. Coffee stations and en-suite kitchenettes are viewed as lifestyle enhancements. Outdoor kitchens are now expected in many markets. Refrigeration appears in bathrooms (skincare), offices, and guest suites. Multigenerational living drives multi-kitchen design. Post-COVID entertaining shifted bar culture into the home. Lifestyle-Driven Design Trends Hospitality influences residential expectations. Convenience and personalization outweigh pure status signaling. Aging in place is shaping appliance planning (drawer refrigeration, wall ovens). Durability is increasingly valued over trend-based aesthetics. Remote work drives integrated kitchenettes and beverage access in home offices. Multiple laundry setups reflect modern household logistics. Status vs. Practicality Status still influences resale-driven decisions in some cases. However, emotional connection tends to be with category (cooking, entertaining) rather than brand alone. Longevity and service reliability often justify premium selections. Magazine-driven or editorial glamour exists—but practical function ultimately wins. Role of the Professional Designer Designers provide budget discipline and scope management. They help clients make decisions faster, reducing cost creep. They balance aspiration with feasibility. Professional oversight protects long-term value. Design is positioned not as a privilege, but as a necessity. Market & Cultural Influences COVID permanently shifted how homes are used. Entertaining moved inward; bar and pizza oven sales spiked. Multigenerational living increased spatial complexity. Social media informs but can distort expectations. Consumers increasingly research via reviews and digital channels. Clients are more cautious amid economic and tariff uncertainty. Guiding Principle “Proper planning prevents poor performance.” Early, honest, and intentional planning reduces regret. Design is both a desire business and a service industry. The goal is not excess—it is alignment between space and life.
