Enterprises have agents. Most can't run them at scale. IBM's Suzanne Livingston explains what changes when you have hundreds — not two.Full Show NotesScaling agentic AI is not the same problem as building it. At IBM Think 2026 in Boston, I sat down with Suzanne Livingston, VP of Product for IBM watsonx Orchestrate, to talk about where enterprise organizations actually are on this journey — and what it takes to move from a pilot to a production environment running hundreds of agents across dozens of departments.Suzanne walks through the full watsonx portfolio, then goes deep on the challenge she hears from customers constantly: the agent worked in the demo, but now it needs to run reliably at scale, with proper governance, observable across the estate, and permissioned correctly for every user and every system it touches. That is a fundamentally different problem than building the agent in the first place. The new Orchestrate Agent Control Plane is IBM's answer to it.This episode is for enterprise technology leaders who have moved past "should we do agents" and are now asking "how do we run them well." If your organization is somewhere between first pilot and full production deployment, this conversation is the one to listen to this week. What We CoverWhy the jump from generative to agentic AI changes the operating model, not just the technologyWhat agent orchestration means in practice when you have 40 sub-agents reporting to one master agentWhat the Orchestrate Agent Control Plane does and why cross-estate visibility matters more than per-agent optimizationHow enterprises are treating AI agents like digital employees — with identities, goals, managers, and performance reviewsWhy governance isn't optional in an agentic environment and what "governance light" looks like for organizations just getting started.Guest BioSuzanne Livingston is Vice President of Product Management for IBM watsonx Orchestrate, IBM's enterprise AI orchestration platform. In this episode, Frank La Vigne sits down with his Red Hat colleague Christopher Newland for a deep dive into the evolving challenges and opportunities at the intersection of AI, open source, and enterprise technology.Fresh off attending both IBM Think and Red Hat Summit, Christopher Newland shares insights from two very different industry perspectives—executive strategy and hands-on engineering. Together, they explore the elusive “last mile” problem in AI adoption, the rise of agentic systems, the critical role of harnesses and runtimes, and why memory management is becoming the next frontier.Plus, they discuss the practical realities and future potential of tools like OpenShift AI, IBM Bob, and open source alternatives. Whether you're a developer grappling with implementation details or a leader focused on ROI, this episode has something for everyone navigating today's fast-changing AI landscape.LinksChristopher on LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/in/cjnuland/Watch this episode on YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlkPPt5YeY0Time Stamps00:00 Comparing IBM Exec and Red Hat Conferences05:24 Challenges in AI implementation06:56 Challenges in scaling microservices11:38 Integrating AI with project management14:23 Debate on AI model vs. harness16:54 Discussing model evolution and limitations22:54 Affordable Power BI Courses Bundle25:19 Separating and managing runtimes27:02 Using semantic routing for requests30:15 Agent memory and compression basics36:02 New AI approach and vision38:49 Developing a multi-agent system40:40 Importance of data chunking
Patrick Moorhead and Daniel Newman dig into the week's biggest moves in enterprise AI: Anthropic and OpenAI launching PE-backed enterprise JVs on the same day, Anthropic filling its compute gap with SpaceX's Colossus, Cerebris filing for a $3.5 billion IPO, NVIDIA going deep on co-packaged optics with Corning, and a full IBM Think and ServiceNow recap. Plus, for The Flip, hosts debate whether Anthropic, at $1.2 trillion, is the most important company in enterprise tech. The handpicked topics for this week are: 1. Anthropic and OpenAI Launch PE-Backed Enterprise JVs on the Same Day — Both companies announced private equity joint ventures, with OpenAI backed by Bain, Brookfield, and Advent, and Anthropic partnering with Blackstone, Goldman Sachs, Apollo, and General Atlantic. Daniel's read is that this is fundamentally a distribution play, using private equity portfolio companies as a deployment channel for AI at scale. Pat sees it as the clearest admission yet that enterprise AI cannot be self-implemented at scale without specialized consulting support, and flags that mid-tier systems integrators (SIs) could get cut out of the middle. (The Decode) 2. Anthropic Signs Massive Compute Deal with SpaceX Colossus — Anthropic urgently needed compute and SpaceX had 300 megawatts and 220,000 GPUs sitting at Colossus One in Memphis without enough business to fill them. Pat's take is blunt: this move is pragmatic. Anthropic needs it, xAI has it. Daniel adds that Dario himself said they planned for 10x growth and got 80x, and this deal is the fast backfill that reality demanded. The side note both hosts flag: Anthropic is running on H100s, H200s, and B200s, which puts the whole "Anthropic only runs on Trainium and TPUs" narrative to rest. (The Decode) 3. Cerebris Files for a $3.5 Billion IPO at $26.6 Billion Valuation — This marks their second attempt at an IPO after pulling the first filing. The architecture is genuinely unique, a complete wafer with massive on-chip SRAM and interconnects built directly onto the wafer rather than copper or photonics. Pat calls it the first credible Western alternative for AI inference. Daniel's framing cuts through: you do not have to beat NVIDIA to sell right now. You just need to have availability. The more interesting headline, both hosts agree, is that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman are angel investors, which adds fuel to the ongoing OpenAI lawsuit. (The Decode) 4. NVIDIA and Corning Announce $500 Million Optical Partnership — Three new US factories, co-packaged optics for Vera Rubin, and a supply chain strategy that mirrors what NVIDIA did with Coherent. Pat's context: this is vertical integration through investment rather than acquisition. Daniel's observation is that the pace of movement toward co-packaged optics is accelerating faster than anyone expected, and his "rule of and" applies here too. Copper is not going away. Optics are being added on top because the data volumes moving across these racks are outrunning what copper alone can handle. US manufacturing in North Carolina and Texas is a strategic bonus. (The Decode) 5. IBM Think 2026: Day Zero, Sovereign Core, and the Quantum Plus AI Bet — Pat moderated on stage with CEO Arvind Krishna and calls this IBM's best showing in five years. Arvind opened with the AI divide, the gap between companies still running POCs and companies already in production, and framed where IBM sits as day zero, not because nothing has happened, but because enterprise AI deployment at scale is still so early. Daniel's biggest takeaways: watsonX Orchestrate updates, Sovereign Core going GA with policy at runtime, and the Confluent acquisition potentially being IBM's most important asset since Red Hat, given that 40% of Fortune 500 companies run on it and real-time streaming data is foundational to agentic systems. Both hosts land on quantum plus AI as IBM's next inflection moment. (The Decode) 6. ServiceNow Knowledge 2026: Enterprise SaaS 2.0 is Emerging — Daniel got there on day three of the event and noted the conference was densely packed. His observation: enterprises have not gotten the memo from Wall Street that SaaS is supposedly dead. His emerging thesis is that middleware could make a comeback for AI, with companies needing a layer that lets agents work across any infrastructure, any app, and within the rules of their specific business. Pat agrees and adds that the growth question is about mix, not survival. (The Decode) 7. The Flip: Is Anthropic at $1.2 Trillion the Most Important Company in Enterprise Tech? — Daniel took the affirmative citing that Claude Code is deeply entrenched in developer workflows. Anthropic went from $9 billion to $45 billion ARR in months. Every major hyperscaler is both a customer and an investor. The PE JVs are turning verticals into Anthropic engines. Dario said they planned for 10x and got 80x. Pat's counter: the enterprise trust gap is real after what Anthropic pulled on pricing and performance. Microsoft has 2 billion users across 365, Azure, and Copilot. NVIDIA is the infrastructure Anthropic runs on. And workforce replacement, which is how Anthropic extracts its terminal value, is not arriving as fast as the valuation suggests. In reality, both hosts admit their notes looked almost identical. (The Flip) 8. AMD — Lisa Su guided AI data center growth up from 60% to 80%. With OpEx growing 83%, net income up 95%, free cash flow ripping, and CPUs growing at nearly 40% without price increases, Pat reads this as unit market share gains coming soon. Daniel's framing: AMD is now a two-headed juggernaut with CPUs and GPUs for the data center. And Helios has not even started shipping yet. Both hosts take a victory lap for previously calling this one. (Bulls and Bears) 9. Palantir — Triple beat on revenue, EPS, and forward guidance. Rule of 40 at 145%. Government revenue up 84%, 47 deals over $10 million, and the largest guidance raise in the company's history. Daniel's take: Palantir is redefining the category entirely. It's not a software company in the Salesforce or ServiceNow sense. It's technology, plus ontology, plus people, deployed at the deepest layers inside governments and enterprises. Pat adds that the four deployed FTE model lets them stand up AIP POCs within a week, which is why they are winning business at this pace. (Bulls and Bears) 10. ARM — AGI processor demand doubled from $1 billion to $2 billion within 45 days. Record revenue, strong pipeline, royalty growth at 21% for the full year. The stock ripped after hours, then sold the next day when management confirmed only enough supply for $1 billion of that $2 billion demand. Pat's read: 50% CPU market share with hyperscalers at the core level is the most underdiscussed signal on the call. Daniel adds that the worry about ARM competing with its own customer base in custom silicon has been quietly swept away by the sheer volume of compute demand. (Bulls and Bears) 11. Supermicro — A board member allegedly used a hairdryer to remove labels from GPU boxes being shipped to China. Approximately 20% of their revenue has reportedly been illegally shipped to China. They beat on EPS and Q4 guide but missed Q3 revenue versus consensus. Stock still ripped 18%. Daniel's take: if you are selling picks and shovels during a gold rush and you are this messed up, he cannot imagine owning it with the overhang that is building. (Bulls and Bears) 12. Lattice Semi and Coherent — Lattice revenue up 42%, back into growth, guiding to 50% year-on-year at midpoint. The AMI acquisition at $1.65 billion doubles their serviceable market from $6 billion to $12 billion and puts them inside every AI server on the planet at the BIOS and platform firmware layer. Pat calls the timing right: core financials crushing it, time to make a move. Coherent printed 21% year-on-year growth, 55% EPS growth, margins expanding, debt coming down, entered the S&P 500, and sits at the center of the co-packaged optics trend that is accelerating. Pat's choke point note: Indium phosphide capacity is the constraint. Six-inch fabs are doubling capacity in 2026, a quarter ahead of plan, and competitors are still ramping their transitions. At IBM's annual meeting of shareholders, the company faced a shareholder proposal from the Heritage Foundation via its Free Enterprise Initiative over its perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index, one of the primary corporate activist rating systems for LGBTQ+ issues. Presenting at that meeting was Camille Kiefel, a detransitioner (someone who undergoes gender transition surgery and later regrets it). Kiefel talked to the company about the risks and ramifications of covering gender transition surgery in its healthcare, particularly for children as it appears that IBM does. This was a powerful example of the real human consequences of corporate policies that aid or adopt radical, activist social agendas - and why the corporate move away from such policies and back to sanity cannot come quickly enough. When I sat down with Leon Butler, the newly appointed CEO of IBM UK and Ireland, it felt like a timely check-in with one of the most influential forces in enterprise technology. Having taken on the role in January 2025 after leading IBM's global data and AI division, Leon brings both technical depth and a clear strategic lens to what lies ahead. Our conversation couldn't have been better timed, following the IBM Think conference and the company's latest wave of announcements around agentic AI, enterprise models, and quantum computing. Leon offered an inside look at how IBM is responding to real-world business challenges with purpose-built, domain-specific AI tools. While the industry often gravitates toward large, generic models, IBM has chosen a different route, focusing on smaller, more efficient models that deliver measurable business outcomes. Their Granite model family and WatsonX orchestrate platform are helping companies streamline complex workflows, boost productivity, and integrate AI into operations without adding more layers of complexity. We also explored how AI agents are evolving from basic chat interfaces into tools that can coordinate multi-step processes across HR, procurement, and customer service. Leon shared concrete examples from inside IBM, including how their own HR systems are now 94 percent automated through AI agents. The company has also achieved over $2 billion in productivity gains through AI and automation internally, a figure that sets a strong precedent for its clients. Our conversation also touched on IBM's quantum roadmap, with expectations that their systems will surpass today's most powerful supercomputers by 2033 and reach error-free capability by 2029. Alongside this, IBM is pushing forward with a global commitment to close the AI skills gap, aiming to equip 2 million people with AI skills by 2026. How does a company of IBM's scale remain agile while reshaping industries with AI and quantum computing? This conversation offers a glimpse into the strategy, leadership, and technology shaping that future.

One of the biggest downsides of consumer AI?It doesn't have up-to-date access to your enterprise data. Even as frontier labs work tirelessly to connect and integrate AI chatbots with your data, we're a far way off from that happening. Unless you're using a platform like IBM's watsonx.

With the proper knowledge and coaching combined with an inspiring vision, I believe anyone -- person, team or organization -- can dramatically improve their performance. I help companies understand the art-of-the-possible to sell more products and services, to more customers, more often, and with greater profitability. I do this by leveraging digital, big data and analytics to create future-proofed experiences and offers that integrate the business and IT. My passion is to build the compelling brands, offers and integrated operating models including digital cores that deliver more human-centric, engaging and efficient customer and employee experiences. I've worked with global leadership teams as an operating line executive and as a strategy consultant. I have led teams that have implemented global digital transformations, developed a new first-in-kind 800-store retail chain in the UK called Sainsbury's Local, created the strategy for UBS to become the number one wealth management brand in the world, and identified new product opportunities in apparel and beverages. I also have made plenty of mistakes: my goal is for others to benefit from the lessons I have learned. My career also includes creating and sharing thought-leadership in numerous publications (e.g., Harvard Business Review, New York Times, Forbes, Fast Company, Property 360, Pharma Executive, AdAge) and global conferences (e.g., keynote speaker at IBM Think, Nielsen Consumer360, The Economist Marketing Summit, World Bank IFC Leadership Summits, corporate meetings). In 360 feedback co-workers consistently note my bold thinking, exceptional teamwork, deep commitment to coaching and mentoring, extensive business knowledge, and energetic leadership. To put things into perspective, Forbes stated in an article that 90% of the world’s data has been created in the past 2 years. However, that’s only part of the problem. According to a recent study from Forrester, 71% of businesses are gathering data faster than they can use it, and 66% of businesses say they constantly need more data than their current capabilities provide. And a major challenge that’s keeping people from fully utilizing their data is data silos, which are very common in today’s modern business world, especially in the case of mergers and acquisitions. The challenge here is that businesses that can leverage all of their data, place themselves at a major advantage over their competition. So, if you’re not leveraging all your data, your competition is. Joe, what are you hearing from customers in this space? [01:45] Data is the crown jewel of organizations. [02:35] The common thread is who can use the data most effectively. [03:13] Let’s focus on security. During the past year, there have been numerous data breaches as well as an increase in ransomware attacks that have been shutting down schools, government offices, and even, unfortunately, hospitals! The increase in cyber-attacks has forced many businesses to prioritize their investment in data resiliency solutions. How is IBM helping their clients minimize disruptions and loss due to cyberattacks? [03:42] CyberSecurity is a topic that’s front and center in the boardrooms. [03:50] There is no room to compromise when it comes to Enterprise Security. [05:44] Since we’re discussing resiliency, let’s discuss resiliency from a business continuity perspective. During the pandemic, businesses had to literally transform their IT Infrastructure overnight to enable people to access their workloads remotely. How is IBM making a difference for businesses requiring high availability and resiliency for their mission-critical infrastructure? [06:38] IBM’s systems and platforms are running the world’s financial institutions, government agencies, healthcare organizations, and everything in between. [08:42] Where can people go to learn more about the conversations businesses are having regarding IT Infrastructure Solutions? Joe: Please visit: ibm.biz/BdffCB. On that webpage, you can register for the Think2021 event, or access the sessions on-demand after the event. [09:34] How do people connect with you? Joe: People can contact me via LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/joe-cropper/. I’m always happy to connect with people and answer any questions. [09:51] Do you have any parting words of wisdom to share with the audience? Watch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/dy835X-P_ZM

R “Ray” Wang is the Founder, Chairman and Principal Analyst of Silicon Valley based Constellation Research Inc., a research and advisory firm which studies disruptive business and exponential technology trends. You very likely have heard of Ray before. He is active on social media (follow him here). He is also frequently interviewed in media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, Fox Business News, CNBC, Yahoo Finance, Cheddar, CGTN, Tech Crunch, ZDNet, Forbes, and Fortune. Ray is the co-host and co-founder of the widely watched DisrupTV, a weekly enterprise tech and leadership webcast that averages 50,000 views per episode. He’s also the author of the popular business strategy and technology blog “A Software Insider’s Point of View”. Since 2005, Ray has delivered hundreds of live and virtual keynotes around the world that are inspiring and legendary. Wang has spoken at almost every major tech related conference, including Salesforce’s Dreamforce, Adobe Summit, IBM Think, HR Tech Conference, Microsoft’s Conferences, Google Next, and the sessions at Davos for various clients. Ray is a great leader, evidenced by the people he has attracted to his firm. I know many of his team and can say for a fact that they are people who can do just about anything they want (which means they are in a position to pick their boss). Ray is also an entrepreneur, and in this OODAcast provides context anyone thinking of starting out on their own should consider. One of many anecdotes he provided was an insightful recap of a conversation he had with his then boss at Forrester Research, George Forrester Colony, which made it clear to Ray that he faced a choice. He could work at a place that wanted to motivate him to be as average as possible or he could go out on his own and create his future himself. Ray is one of the most prolific writers and thinkers in this space, which includes bestselling books. His 2015 "Disrupting Digital Business" provided insights into ways businesses could create authentic, trustable experiences for clients and optimal experiences for employees in an age where the economy focuses less on products and services and more on experiences and outcomes. We also ask Ray for early context on his latest book, "Everybody Wants to Rule The World", which brings new lessons on surviving and thriving in a world of digital giants like Amazon, Google and Facebook. The book may help you steer your business to success in an age where many will be crushed by the powerful forces unleashed by large firms like these. Why read this book? Because if you don't, you may well be crushed. Imagine the incredibly tech savvy Dominos Pizza, who really should be lauded for their embracing new technologies and disrupting the pizza business through technology. But now are in total danger of being crushed by an amazing, but previously unforseen model, which enables firms by companies that don't have stores, that don't sell pizzas, and don't have their own drivers, but that can deliver. The food aggregators, like postmates , Doordash etc, don't have to invest the capital to make pizza in order to make money from the transaction. This is just one of many examples, Ray also tells us how to crush LG and Samsung, for example, using the new approaches to platform based dynamics. We ask Ray for his insights on many other tech topics, including quantum computing, quantum security (he says it is like running a bulldozer over a thatch hut), Bitcoin and Cryptocurrencies.

Over the last 10 days, we've seen massive events such as Facebook's F8, Mobile World Congress, IBM Think, and Oracle ModernCX announce that they were canceling their global conferences in the wake of the coronavirus epidemic. This epidemic is having a global impact and closer to home its decimating the meetings industry, and the question we have to start asking is how should planners, brand marketers, and professional speakers be thinking about the future of live events? Now in context, this disruption is minor compared to those dealing with family members getting sick or dying thanks to this coronavirus, and our thoughts go out to them. In this episode, I'm joined by a good friend and fellow speaker Erin King who happened to have spent a decade in live event digital marketing. We discuss the epidemic impact on our industries, but more so, the digital OPPORTUNITIES are presenting themselves for both keynote speakers and event planners. There's no right way or one-way to handle this forced change, and we've seen some events announce that they will be moving to a "global first digital event," while others have postponed the event till 2021. Erin and I have both spent years in this industry, both planning backstage AND performing onstage. From this unique perspective, in this episode, we share our predictions, recommendation, and ideas around: How agile planners, marketers, and speakers can re-invent the venue and capitalize on what is actually an exciting opportunity Why only streaming a keynote via webinar is not a good enough alternative to live How production schedules can get more creative, immersive and interactive to deliver more compelling experiences for remote audiences How the roles of event production teams will have to evolve with this "new normal" of experiential How to elevate your internal budget and planning discussions from "which functionality" to "what type of format" Why in tumultuous times, organizations need education, inspiration, and motivation more than ever, regardless of the medium used to deliver it What we believe is the number 1 shift that must occur in the content and format of digital events to "re-invent the venue" and embrace the non-captured attention of a digital attendee. Why and how almost EVERY digital platform and software has gotten online conferences wrong. Why we, like speakers and event planners, must coordinate and collaborate on an audience-first approach to supplement what sponsors, attendees, and executives are now missing. Why the future is bright, and digital opportunities are endless Now let's be real; there's a reason digital events haven't replaced offline conferences over the last 10 years as nothing will 100% replace the handshake and in-person networking experience. But both Erin and I believe that this is going to spark a NEW approach to digital events that have been long overdue. In the past, let's face it we're just back to back webinars labeled as "online conference" or a brand live streaming the audio of speakers online and calling that a digital summit. There will be much more to come on this topic, and some details will be shared soon on the offerings and exact plans Erin and I have in the works to help facilitate these ideas that we discuss on the show. In the meantime pick up Erin's book and give her a follow on social media Erin King is Founder of Socialite Agency, a firm specializing in digital communication for live events like The Oscars and others. After spending a decade as a live event digital marketer, she transitioned full-time onto the professional speaking circuit with the publication of her Amazon best-selling book, "Digital Persuasion." Steve McDowell and Matt Kimball, senior datacenter analysts at Moor Insights & Strategy, leave their impressions from IBM's recent Think event, where IBM demonstrated impressive infrastructure while delivering a message focused on enterprise class problems. IBM has long been a trendsetter and early promoter of new architectures such as cloud, capacity on-demand, and solution deliver. They haven't stopped. Lenovo announced earnings, where the company delivered double-digit growth in its enteprise business, with a surprising confession that it might have hit triple digits in North America. At the same time, Hewlett Packard Enterprise's earnings showed that (for HPE) the future is all about converged infrastructure, where its HCI business grew a whopping 70%. What's it all mean? Matt & Steve puzzle that out. There's also news of ARM Holdings delivering a new enterprise-class server and edge core. Does that mean that Linus is wrong, and ARM has a future in server? All that, plus the fellows inadvertantly learn that if you record outside on an unseasonably warm day in March, even with a directional microphone, that the birds will have their say.
