Most of us have a very mystified view of what money really is. Most of us have only a partial understanding. This is nothing something we should be blamed for since even economics textbooks fail to provide an adequate definition. Some don't even bother. Still, if we want to understand the world we live in, if we want to understand our place in the world, if we want to understand how to save the world, we must start with an understanding of money. We must move beyond the confusion and deliberate obfuscation and learn what the true value of money is. In this video, we reveal a proper definition of what money is, which is a store of your labour time and value. We then take a look at some of the problems associated with money (it is highly addictive, it is easy to accumulate), learn how a handful of people addicted to money are rapidly destroying the world, and provide some suggestions on how we can begin to turn the tide and save the planet. Episode details: Streamed live on Oct 3, 2017 “When the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, the black community owned less than one percent of the United States' total wealth. More than 150 years later, that number has barely budged.” As Mehrsa Baradaran argues in her new book, The Color of Money, this absence of wealth isn't just a failure to atone for oppression and exclusion imposed by slavery and Jim Crow, but the product of contemporary acts to maintain their legacy. Today, the racial wealth gap is animated by policies that build the wealth of those who already have it and sowing debt among those who don't, such as fees and fines levied by municipal governments and the criminal justice system, which fall disproportionately on communities of color. This experience of exclusion is reinforced at the community level where decades of legal residential segregation create the conditions for economic insecurity to become self-reinforcing. The disappearance of mainstream banks from communities of color, for example, has left the door open for unscrupulous and predatory actors, like payday lenders, to profit from poverty. Rather than seen as an outcome constructed by law and policy, Baradaran argues, the lack of Black wealth is blamed on colorblind market forces. As such, the prevailing solutions have focused on enabling Black communities to “bootstrap” their way to wealth by invigorating local enterprise, leaving unexamined the ways in which the government is culpable for both failing to invest in building Black wealth and continuing to siphon it away. It gave way to an explosion of protest, and a closer examination among historians of the systemic racism in the way the African diaspora is described. Cultural institutions around the world are examining their own legacy within the history of colonialism and imperialism. Join historian David Olusoga in conversation with Dr Omar Khan for his personal perspective on how we memorialise, teach and write about racism, and why black British history matters. Professor David Olusoga is a British-Nigerian historian, broadcaster and BAFTA award-winning presenter and filmmaker. He is Professor of Public History at the University of Manchester and a regular contributor to the Guardian, Observer, New Statesman and BBC History Magazine. The author of several books including Black and British: A Forgotten History and A House Through Time, he was also a contributor to The Oxford Companion to Black British History. In 2019 he was awarded the OBE for services to history and community integration. David's new children's book, Black and British: A Short Essential History has recently been published. Omar Khan was director of the Runnymede Trust, the UK's leading race equality thinktank for 6 years, until June 2020, and before that Head of Policy at Runnymede. In this capacity he was involved in helping bring the Windrush injustice to light and was a member of the advisory group of the Windrush Lessons Learned Review, chaired by Wendy Williams. During his tenure as Director, Runnymede produced the award-winning site Our Migration Story (www.ourmigrationstory.org.uk) and consistently argued for the need to teach history more accurately in Britain.
