The Not Your Average Globetrotter project is a podcast for people who want to become expats or who are already expats who are interested in living abroad, moving abroad, “expat life”, and especially for those interested in living in Italy... Because moving abroad including moving to Italy can be quite the undertaking, I wanted to share information and experiences with others in hopes of helping people to avoid a potentially difficult transition into life abroad as an expatriate regardless of the country they move to. During my search for content before I started my own project, I found many creators focused only on the glamorous side of a life abroad while forgetting about the daily realities that people face in a new country, learning everything from "A-Z" all over again, visas or even dual citizenship including dual Italian citizenship. There’s more than just the “Pizza, Pasta and Amore”. But even when living abroad gets tough, it's important to remember you're not alone and there are many other people who have gone through the same struggles and have the same questions that you might have. I enjoy being part of the global discussion about life abroad with people I have met along the way and sharing information that I know can make a difference in a person's life.
The Tajani emergency citizenship decree has been finalized, and it's reshaping what it means to claim Italian citizenship by descent. With new generational limits now in place, the process of obtaining Italian dual citizenship through jure sanguinis has become significantly more restricted—narrowing eligibility for many who had long considered applying. It's surprising how quickly this change took effect, particularly in a country where red tape usually slows everything down. But here we are. If Italian dual citizenship or reconnecting with your heritage through jure sanguinis has been on your mind and you're still eligible, now is the time to act—because the window of opportunity may not stay open for long. In this dual citizenship focused expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we'll go over the finalization of the Tajani decree and explore the surrounding topics and conversations that have emerged in its wake.If you find these episodes of Not Your Average Globetrotter helpful, entertaining and/or if you feel as if I've helped you save time, headaches, or legal fees, please consider making a monthly pledge on Patreon and becoming a monthly patron to help make more videos like this possible:
Dual citizenship offers increased freedom, expanded travel options, and access to services like healthcare, education, and property ownership, but it also comes with serious responsibilities. Whether acquired through citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis), citizenship by marriage, naturalization, or birthright citizenship (jus soli), each path brings its own legal and practical implications. Dual nationals must navigate complex tax obligations, potential mandatory military service, and legal issues involving marriage, inheritance, and child custody. Managing multiple bureaucratic systems and understanding cross-border financial restrictions are essential for anyone considering or already holding more than one citizenship. In this dual citizenship focused, expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we'll go over the pros and cons of holding dual nationality, including mobility, residency rights, legal challenges, tax burdens, and access to public services and education. If you find these episodes of Not Your Average Globetrotter helpful, entertaining and/or if you feel as if I've helped you save time, headaches, or legal fees, please consider making a monthly pledge on Patreon and becoming a monthly patron to help make more videos like this possible:

Portugal, once a haven for affordable living, is now starting to face Northern European-level rents while maintaining much lower minimum salaries, making it a challenge for both locals and expats alike. The phasing out of the Non-Habitual Residency tax benefits and the uncertain future of golden visas add to the financial unpredictability, diminishing the country's previous allure for those with foreign income. Although public transport and some services remain cheaper, overall costs, including groceries and dining out, are climbing. As a result, many are now considering other European destinations like Spain, Greece, and Romania, which offer lower living costs and new incentives. Despite these challenges, living in Portugal continues to attract those who appreciate its unique lifestyle, but thorough research is crucial for expats to determine if moving to Portugal still fits their financial and personal needs. In this living abroad expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, hosted by dual citizen expat Rafael Di Furia, we'll go over the current cost of living in Portugal, the impact of policy changes, and alternative European destinations for expats. The Portuguese government's decision to end the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) tax scheme brings significant implications for expats living in Portugal and those considering moving to Portugal. The NHR scheme, a major draw for expatriates seeking financial advantages, played a crucial role in attracting foreign investment and skills, thereby boosting the local economy. However, its termination may lead to a reassessment among expats, who might explore relocating to other tax-friendly European destinations. This change could impact Portugal's real estate market and local businesses, which had grown accustomed to the expat community. For those contemplating a move to Portugal or living abroad in Europe, this highlights the importance of considering factors beyond financial incentives, including cultural adaptation and long-term residency plans. The situation serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of expat life and the necessity for thorough research and flexibility when planning to move and settle in a new country. Exploring new horizons by moving to a different country often stems from the pursuit of happiness and self-discovery. However, this journey is more about internal growth than geographical change. True contentment arises from within, and while a new environment offers fresh perspectives, it's not the sole happiness determinant. Such a move invites introspection, revealing personal facets in the absence of familiar routines. Challenges like cultural adaptation and rebuilding social networks emphasize the importance of effective communication and local language skills. The experience also prompts a re-evaluation of values and perspectives, especially noticeable upon returning home. Therefore, considering such a life-changing decision requires realistic expectations, thorough research, and perhaps extended stays in the intended location, underscoring that happiness and self-discovery are processes transcending physical locations.
