Five years after the world came to a grinding halt—when Italy and shortly after much of the globe went into a full or partial lockdown—Katy and Tiffany have a conversation about that unique and momentous time. Do we really remember what it was like or are the memories vague and unreliable? How did the pandemic and the lockdowns change our perception of time? And have we, as a society, changed since then? Did living through a global pandemic have lasting changes, and are they positive or negative changes? Plus-Sized Hearts starts its journey with a very special guest from Korea. Vivian Geeyang Kim is a true trailblazer in Korea's plus-size scene. After attempting to go see a showing of Jeanie Finlay's empowering documentary Your Fat Friend at the DMZ Doc Fest in Seoul I saw that Vivian was on the speakers panel after the showing. After a couple of DMs and emails, Vivian and I ended up having dinner at a great burger place in a cool part of Seoul and the rest is history. Every time we meet, I learn something from her about staying true to yourself. She is unapologetic when it comes to making sure people (mostly women) in Korea feel seen and heard no matter what their body size. For the past 15 years Vivian has been chipping away at the Korean culture's tendency to completely turn away from people with larger bodies. She's been steadfast in her commitment to bring about awareness that people with larger bodies are people with hearts, feelings and have the right to do as they chose living in the society of Korea, and most importantly they have a right to live without feeling like they don't belong. Try not to tear up at the end when she shares what she does to keep her heart plus-sized. Vivian put her money where her heart is and started her own design house called im66100 and she shares what the name means in this episode. She's also been photographed in major fashion magazines such as Vogue and Elle. She appears regularly on TV talking about being plus-size in Korea. Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week I'm joined by a longtime friend as we both were about to hit the road for weekend adventures fitting our global missions. Photographer, Dante Bowen Hendricks found his calling as a young boy in Guyana when his uncle gifted him a rotating globe that sparked Dante's fascination with world cultures. After immigrating to Brooklyn as a teen, Dante set aside his passion for photography to work in his family's shipping business. But a trip back home reignited his love for the art. Dante dove into developing his skills, studying at the International Center of Photography. Though he does commercial work digitally, Dante prefers shooting personal projects on film. He's exhibited in New York as well as Baltimore and is new local, New Orleans. He is also a co-contributor along with fellow Brooklyn-bred photographer, Phillip Moi-Thuk-Shung (http://phillipshung.com) to Inferno, a forthcoming book of photo essays. Dance and spiritual traditions are among Dante's favorite subjects. His distinct style retains a sense of childlike wonder, conveying cultures with sensitivity and nuance. He also took a 4-year sabbatical in the middle of this time to work in the construction industry as everything from labourer to site manager while he took a second bachelor's degree in Construction Management. He's now in a completely different 4th career as a car salesman.Sebastian moved to the USA in order to marry his girlfriend of three years (refers to their relationship, not his girlfriend's age!) four-and-a-half years ago, following a two-year ordeal with the US Immigration Services, during which he was deported back to the UK twice! This week, the Bigger, Better World podcast takes a trip to Panama, talking to International Living Overseas Editor Jessica Ramesch about her recent scouting trip to the westernmost edge of Panama—the province of Chiriquí.Although it's a small country, Panama is a big destination in the world of overseas retirement and relocation. Just three hours' flying time from the U.S., with a dollar economy, year-round warmth, a busy metropolitan city, and two glorious tropical coastlines, the Central American nation is one of the most popular settling points for in-the-know expats. While many of those adventurers concentrate themselves in Panama City, or in the beach towns and resorts close by, there's a growing number of retirees, digital nomads, and work-from-anywhere professionals who explore a little farther, and find exactly what they were looking for in the Chiriquí region. That shouldn't be a surprise. Snuggling right up to the border with Costa Rica, Chiriquí is a mountains-meets-sea region, with enough altitude in the highlands to create its own cool microclimate, sweeping right down to the Pacific Ocean with its wild waves, tropical beaches, and secluded bays. Diversity is the key to the landscape here, with productive farmland up in the high spots giving way to deep jungle and green grasslands at lower levels. It all means that the prospective expat can pick and choose from a range of microclimates, finding the exact match for their personal preference. In her article for International Living magazine, and in her discussion with podcast host, Jim Santos, Jessica explores the many options for expats in the Chiriquí region, from the beaches of Boca Chica and Las Lajas to the city in David, all the way up to Boquete—one of the world's premier expat destinations. She paints a glorious picture of small farms, fishing villages, lush coffee plantations, deserted beaches, and horseback ranchers living a life that looks like something from centuries ago.Join host, Jim Santos, as he meets Jessica Ramesch in the latest episode of Bigger, Better World. If you're enjoying the podcast, we would really appreciate it if you could leave us a review on your favorite podcast platform: https://lovethepodcast.com/internationalliving.Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube

Understanding the US expat taxing system can be challenging. And when you are an expat, things can appear even more confusing. Nearly all US citizens living abroad need to file a foreign tax return in their country of residence. For Americans, it is mandatory to file a US Federal Tax Return regardless of where they live or work. In addition, the expats are required to file US tax forms such as FATCA and FBAR. Isn't that sound complex? If you are a US citizen living abroad and looking for efficient ways to file and understand taxes, this article is for you. Do All US Expats Require Filing Taxes? The simple answer is Yes, they do. Virtually all US citizens need to file a US Federal Tax Return no matter where they live. So, as long as your worldwide income exceeds the taxing threshold, you are bound with the US tax filing slab, irrespective of your geographical location. The worldwide income includes salary, wages, dividends, interest, and rental income. For self-employed individuals, the tax filing threshold is $400. If your income does not exceed the tax filing threshold you will still need to file As mentioned above, all Americans have to file a US tax return, and most citizens living outside may be exempted. The US Expat Tax filing system offers several deductions, credits, and exclusions to ensure that Americans living in foreign countries are not taxed twice on their income. US taxpayers can use these tax benefits to erase their tax bills. American expats are eligible to claim Foreign Tax Credits against the income that their host country has already taxed. For exclusions, you still need to file your tax return to prove your eligibility for tax benefits. Use Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE)Make sure you are qualified for Foreign Earned Income Exclusion; however, you can also opt for it by filing Form 2555 or Form 2555-EZ. Once you fill up Form 2555, you can include it in your income filing each year as it remains in effect thereafter. When you no longer want to use Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, you need to apply for approval from the IRS, or else you won't claim an exclusion for the subsequent five tax years. Pass A Residency Test to Use FEIETo become eligible to use the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, the taxpayers are required to pass the Physical Presence Test. This Residence Test proves that you are physically present in the host country for 330 out of 365 days. The American citizen needs to live in a foreign country for a period of at least one calendar year. Also, the taxpayer must have no intention to move back to America in the near future. File FBAR if Your Foreign Account Balance Exceeds $10000The Foreign Bank Account Report (FBAR) or Form 114 is designed to thwart tax cheats by keeping money in foreign accounts. If the aggregate balance of all your account in foreign banks exceed $10000, you need to disclose that by filing FBAR through the BSA e-filing portal. The deadline for FBAR filing is April 18th which is the same as the due date for federal tax filing. Similarly, American expats need to file FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) which prevents them from hiding money in assets. When the aggregate value of financial assets in a foreign country reaches a certain threshold, the expats need to file Form 8938.Use Expatfile.tax: The #1 US Expat Tax Filing SoftwareFiling taxes is complex, using a competitive Expat Tax Filing Software can simplify the entire process for taxpayers.

https://youtu.be/WFpLohEAFaQ How has it been to be in Germany during this virus time? The company I work for involves a lot of travelling – but we haven't been able to do much of that. So most days consist of waking up at home, answering emails and calls ‘till dinnertime. But Germany has been doing pretty well – rates are lowering, things are opening up, playgrounds and cafes are reopening. It is quite nicer now than it was a few months ago. How do you feel about the healthcare system? Very good – I would say, not only because we are in a fortunate position, but local German insurance is good. Public insurance is run by private companies, but you can purchase it from different places. We have fantastic healthcare for a reasonable price, even total regular/free insurance. Our daughter was born here and we had an incredible service – we stayed six days in a family room and had three meals delivered a day. The cost is similar to the US – but it is very good in Germany. You get a lot for what you pay for. Because I have local contract and I am a German employee, I qualify for a German pension. How long have you been in Germany? I've been in Germany for 8 years – always in Hamburg. Why Germany? – From NY, NJ – Peace Corps, Africa… I moved to Hamburg, Germany with Johnson & Johnson. Then I was interested in a job to be a financial controller for a factory outside of Hamburg. This was in the medical device group. I later joined a start-up medical device company in Hamburg and did that for about two years. Until I joined the company I'm currently with. What are you doing for work? I do a financial role as well – responsible for controlling a cluster of 12 plants around Europe and two headquarters in the U.S – my day job is to try to figure out the finances and strategies of those 12 factories for the company. How has the visa process been for you? It is easier if you can find a company to help you do the visas and relocation. I picked up a local assignment and because I was working with the company they were able to help with some of that, but the rest we did on our own. – I am under a German contract like any other citizen. What is your current status? Allison? Can she work? We have a permanent residency in Germany – Allison can work here, she has a permanent visa related to mine. So if I lose my job we could have an issue. Mine is unlimited, but around next year she can file an application to transfer to her own permanent visa. How has it been dealing with the language? I didn't know the language – I had never been to Germany before. I mentioned to the companies I worked for that I didn't speak German but they still told me to go for it and have fun – I haven't had any issues with it so far. We've tried to learn German, but it is not fluent yet. All my work so far has been in English. I take a few courses a week to keep learning. Raising a kid there? My daughter is in a bilingual school – she's learning both languages quite well, and it works pretty well. We could've sent her to the local school but that would've been all German, or to an international school but that would've been all English. We felt happier sending her to a bilingual school because we don't know what will happen in the future. Have taxes been complicated? I mostly do it myself – it is very expensive to get help, and I'm no expert but I can do it myself. Since we have German income we file German income taxes. American taxes are a bigger headache than German ones – German forms need less information and filling in. Are you paying any US taxes? Yes – I still have a New Jersey rental and as Americans we have to file for global income taxes. What is your cost of living compared to NY? A two-three bedroom place would be about a million euro – so we are still in our apartment. I think cost of living is similar to New York, maybe suburban New Jersey – it didn't strike us as very expensive whe...

The Climate category, for instance, now favors places that offer a variety of options. “The sun may shine year-round in a beach locale, but not everybody likes hot and humid and so this 2020 index gives favor to those places that might, for instance, offer both beach and a cooler highland option,” says Stevens.Another change is in the Cost of Living category. “We took the cost of housing out entirely and created a new category, which combines buying and renting, which now makes it easier to compare day-to-day living costs,” says Stevens.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Ever thought of relocating but want to hear what it's like? Ever moved then gone elsewhere to get closer to where/who you want to be? After two years in Canada, one pandemic, (lots of visa paperwork), new career experiences, a great relationship, and mega life lessons, I'm heading back to the motherland. In an open and personal episode, I share what's driving me to this change and why BC didn't feel like the place to stay permanently for now. So grateful for this chapter! (If I've learnt anything, it's that everything in life is temporary, and I have to honour what arises.) Hope you're all being kind to yourselves!

Living as an expat abroad and dealing with different countries and cultures can be challenging. In this episode I talk about Hugo who is made up of a lot of my clients but is also part of me as I too am an expat living for more than 25 years outside of my native country Denmark. What happens when Hugo goes back to his home country, how does he feel when he just arrives?. How can he fit in again with his family and friends, whose lives have continued without him? What makes it hard to leave his country and his family again? And when he arrives “home”, he questions where is “home” really. Gestalt Therapy has helped Hugo find a new awareness, how to make sense of this expat life by looking at it from a different angle. Listen to this episode to find out what this different angle is. I end this episode with a quote from Frederick S. Perls, the father of Gestalt Therapy; “ Nobody can stand the truth if it is told to him. Catherine Cleland is a travel blogger and expat who pushed the boundaries early in life. Catherine was hooked on travel early, deferring a typical career path to travel the world with her partner during her 20's. It was motivating to hear how much diligence it took to pull it off. Plus, she's my little sister, so it was a pleasure to sit down and talk about her philosophy on living this unconventional lifestyle. We cover the good and bad of world travel, experiencing Ayahuasca for the first time, and how to integrate Ayahuasca into your professional career. It was a heavy conversation meant for anyone exploring the world of expat living. Dan discusses the healing benefits of ayahuasca & plant medicine & his entrepreneurial journey in the plant medicine industry. He talks with top minds like Aubrey Marcus, Dorian Yates, Dennis McKenna, & Patrick Bet-David. “No one can have your psychedelic experience for you; you just have to screw your courage up & raise the cup to your lips & face what's in there.” - Dennis McKenna on psychedelics & plant medicine “Ayahuasca is a symbiotic ally of the human species.” - Dennis McKenna on ayahuasca & plant medicine “Ayahuasca is changing global environmental consciousness.” - Dennis McKenna on ayahuasca & plant medicine “Life itself is a drug experience.” - Dennis McKenna on psychedelics & plant medicine “Psychedelics are not suppressed because they are dangerous to users; they're suppressed because they provoke unconventional thought.” - Dennis McKenna on psychedelics & plant medicine “We never feel completely ready for life's big decisions; but in taking the leap, we push ourselves to the next level.” - Patrick Bet-David on entrepreneurship “You're going to use experiences to become either bitter or better.” - Patrick Bet-David on entrepreneurship “If you always make the right decision, the safe decision, the one most people make, you will be the same as everyone else.” - Patrick Bet-David “The bigger the vision you have, the more important it is to think on what type of a team you're going to put around you." - Patrick Bet-David on entrepreneurship “If you can walk, talk, hear or see, you have everything it takes to do something big with your life.” - Patrick Bet-David “Plant medicines like ayahuasca ask us to connect to all parts of ourselves.” - Dorian Yates on ayahuasca & plant medicine “The first time, mother ayahuasca couldn't work with me. She told me I was too toxic & to stop poisoning myself & come back later.” - Dorian Yates on ayahuasca & plant medicine “The plant knows who she wants to heal each time.” - Dorian Yates on ayahuasca & plant medicine “The people who do ayahuasca are bonded together forever, like a brotherhood.” - Dorian Yates on ayahuasca ceremonies “With good practice, plant medicines can play a key role in the healing of collective suffering on the planet.” - Aubrey Marcus on ayahuasca & plant medicine “You're not rewarded for the comfortable choice.” - Aubrey Marcus on ayahuasca & plant medicine “Know the plants, know yourself, be honest, & decide the terms of your relationship with them.” - Aubrey Marcus on ayahuasca & plant medicine _____________________ As always this episode is brought to you by Soltara Healing Center. This last year we’ve experienced and heard of countless difficult events that have unfolded around the world. Whether it has been political unrest, natural disasters, or even violence, as expats we’ve witnessed from afar the challenging headlines of our home countries. As Christians who are expats, many questions arise as we consider how to think and feel about the affairs of our home countries. How can we think through these difficult events? How can we wrestle with sin and corruption well? In this episode, we’re skipping school again. It's not by choice this time. For many students and parents, Tuesday 19 November 2019 marks a week of school closures in our city due to the Hong Kong protests. We’re all hoping for a peaceful resolution and to be back at school tomorrow but if we aren’t, it’s time to get serious about home learning. So, we turned to an expert for some practical tips about managing school work at home in this very unique situation. The voice you are about to hear is Jerome Barty-Taylor who you probably recognise if you read Expat Living. Jerome and his team at Barty Education and Development work with all sorts of students across Hong Kong to support their learning goals. The last time we caught up with him was with his student Cloe Cheung who gave us some tips on what it takes to achieve a perfect 45 in the IB. For more expert guidance on education and living in Hong Kong, visit https://expatliving.hk/ *Expat Living acknowledges the teaching community in Hong Kong who have been amazing this past week. They’re helping parents and students maintain momentum by setting up virtual classrooms, sending daily learning content, and consistently communicating with students and parents. It’s a huge job in uncertain times and ever-changing information – so thank you on behalf of the city’s parents and our kids. We hope to see you back at school soon!

Moving and living abroad can be an emotional journey for all family members. And especially mothers often have to handle most of the emotions of the children. This can be challenging especially when you are handling your own emotions at the same time. But there are some communication rules that make it so much easier to stay connected to your children and even make the bond stronger while living abroad. In this episode you will learn how to communicate with your children when you live abroad.
These days everybody seems to be so busy, so when you are not and you feel bored, you might feel like an outsider. Especially as an expat partner it is easy to feel bored. And the reason for that is not only that you have nothing to do. Most of the time the reason goes deeper than that. In this episode I discuss boredom for expat partners and why they feel bored and what they can do about it. Because there is good boredom and not so good boredom.

We would be extremely grateful! iTunes is a search engine as well, and so when you rate and review us, you help others find us. Thank you! ::: Single Parent Travel and Expat Living in Australia with Kids Meet Jade. She's a Canada native who knows a few things about single parent travel and living in Australia with kids. She's visited 51 countries. Her son Jacob has been to 23 countries so far, and he's only four. He started crawling while they were in Iceland. Like many traveling families I talk to, Jade says the easiest time to travel with him so far has been when he was a baby. As he's gotten older, she says, they have slowed their travel pace and stayed in places longer. Tips for Single Parent Travel As her son has grown, Jade has switched up the way she travels. She never thought she'd enjoy cruising, but has discovered it to be a great form of single parent travel. Why? For one, it's a great way to see many destinations and yet stay in the same room. If you're living in Australia with kids, cruising can be a good option as there are many cruises to the Pacific Islands. Jade likes these destinations as well and for at least one similar (and practical) reason. They're small islands, and you usually stay in one hotel while you're there. less moving from room to room. Travel in Australia with Kids Jade has experienced expat living in Australia in three cities: Brisbane, Melbourne, and now Sydney. She has some great advice about travel in Australia with kids. For example, if you like road trips, then visiting Australia with kids is the way to go. Neighboring New Zealand is even better. If you're visiting Australia with kids, however, it helps to budget your money wisely. Whether it's single parent travel or exploring with a large family, it's not cheap visiting Australia with kids. Another thing to set low expectations for is internet and wifi availability. It may surprise yo to know that Australia's wifi networks are not that strong, and free wifi in cafes is rare. This certainly surprised me. To prepare for this, Jade recommends loading your devices with apps that work offline. Beyond Australia with Kids While half of our conversation deals with travel and living in Australia with kids, the other half deals with her insight into single parent travel and other aspects of travel that many parents can relate to. We discuss strollers and finding the right formula for lactose intolerant kids. We talked about great travel gear and the gear that we buy and never used. All this and more on this week's episode.
