Questions Like This Productions
Continuing despite the onslaught of technical difficulties... The boys are back with the Freddy Mercury/Queen biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody." From Zoroastrian maxims to hush-hush gay sex in truck stops to recording studio drama and finally the smash Live Aid performance, the movie was a treat for fans even if the critics were polarized and some facts didn't add up. Note this does not mean we endorse Bryan Singer. Plus: Scenes that should have been in the movie, Lucy Boynton looking like a mf snacc, Rami Malek as the Next Big Thing, Mike Myers, and more!
Continuing our series on James Bond. We talk about the longest Bond film yet and Bond going to the Orient! Thunderball is probably best remembered for being super long and having underwater fight scenes, but it's not bad (in fact one of us likes it a whole lot.) You Only Live Twice however...has a good song and was written by Roald Dahl. And sorry for the audio quality, Apple sucks diiiiiiiiiiick Also: Japanese Bond, wrestlers in the franchise, four production units, honorary Sicilians, and more!
Welcome back to our series on the Bond franchise. We talked about the first three movies in the franchise that kick-started a global phenomenon. Dr. No may be a little rough around the edges but From Russia with Love and Goldfinger are still all-time classics. Plus: Billy Joel lyrics, Turkish Oil Wrestling, John Oates's Private Eyes, Choosing Oddjob is cheating, A Dog Named N-Word, and many more!
Strap yourselves in, we're talking Bond! The boys talk about the long-lasting spy franchise James Bond. Particularly, the drama surrounding Bond 25, due out next year (perhaps.) We discuss Danny Boyle's exit, why the last movie wasn't so hot, next steps for the franchise, and pore over the list of potential Bonds! Plus: Villains, Shir Shean, how franchises survive, and many more!
Going back to Hong Kong baybee! One final episode to close off World Cup fever, the boys look at the surprise Stephen Chow smash: Shaolin Soccer. Visually intense, it was rough to talk about the movie while trying to do the action justice. Along the way we manage to question the casting direction (in a good way.) Also this episode is (mostly) unedited because it was short enough already.
World Cup fever still not subsiding? The boys got you covered with a Stallone deep cut: Escape to Victory! This 1981 film unites Sly, Michael Caine, Max von Sydow, Pele, and host of other soccer greats in a movie very loosely based on a true story. A POW team plays a German team in a propaganda football match at the height of WWII. Featuring all the classic WWII movie tropes of: the Nazi with an eyepatch, French Resistance woman, prison escapes, and British officers playing cards. Plus: Other odd pairings, My Cocaine as Ebenezer Scrooge, West Ham United, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Clemmons, and more!
The boys talk about the first ever Rambo movie and the most surprising: First Blood. Unlike the sequels, First Blood is more of a drama about a Vietnam Vet with PTSD being treated like ass by small-town cops. A movie way ahead of its time and sadly not as fondly remembered as its sequels. Also: Bollywood Rambo, Hard-R movies turned into Children's Cartoons, RIP Anthony Bourdain, Kojima, and Asian Expendables!
The boys are back with a look at the Cannes Film Festival: the snootiest, high-falutinest film festival there is. We take a look at the history of the event, notable movies that have won, 2018's entries for the Palme d'Or, and of course the controversies! Plus: The meaning of the French tricolors, racism, Steve Harvey, and Solo!
QUESTIONS LIKE THIS EPISODE XXVIII THE BOYS tackle STAR WARS. A franchise in existence for over FORTY years, they try to pinpoint exactly when did it start to SUCK. From the most recent SEQUEL TRILOGY to the ORIGINAL TRILOGY and every EXPANDED UNIVERSE release in between, it turns out there is a lot of suck in the CANON. Tackling REYLO, resurrected actors, PREQUELS, and of course the STEREOTYPES that George loves so much, you're in for an ACTION-PACKED episode of the pod. Also, if you are the person behind the fanart I'm using as the episode cover please send me an email and I'll credit you! questionslikethispod@gmail.com
Avengers Disassemble! After ten years of movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes to a head with Infinity War. Thanos finally gets off his ass and forces Cap, Doc Strange, Groot, and Spoder Man to work together. Does it live up to the hype? Actually yeah, it's good folks, leaving the boys to wonder who will actually watch the Ant-Man 2 movie after this one. Plus: Sexy Aunt May, Michael "I got mouth cancer from eating bwussy" Douglas, not watching previous installments, other ambitious crossovers, 3 Dev Adam and a lot more! Find out if you survived Thanos by checking this site: http://www.didthanoskill.me
This is it, the absolute nadir of Spielberg: Ready Player One. From the incredibly generic, fresh off the assembly line shit story, to the insufferable "I recognize that!" cinematography, we gut this Reddit wet-dream and leave nothing unexamined. Fulfilling a prophecy from a previous episode, one of the boys walked out of this movie! Plus: Borrowed nostalgia, Nickelodeon woes, easter eggs, Jean Baudrillard, and more!
I guess this can officially be the start of season 2 of the show. The boys try to find out why exactly is Netflix producing and releasing so many high-profile shitty movies and cancelling 15 series at once despite being the most ubiquitous streaming service on Earth (and Elon Musk's secret Martian colony.) Also: Suncoast Videos, Governator, Aziz I'm Sorry, Jared Leto's mystifying continued existence, and no more closing songs :(
We're not really good at this weekly thing are we? Anyway, two movies with good leads (Alicia Vikander and Jennifer Lawrence) that have a whole mess of issues that add up to two mostly nothing movies, including a historic first for one of us! Also, this will probably be the last one with outro music, I don't want to deal with anymore disputes. Eat my ass in hell, overly litigious copyright holders. Plus: Joel Edgerton, upcoming hot messes, Assassin's Creed, directors who are coasting, The New (Old) Cold War, and lots more!
This is not a new track, just a reupload since the earlier version got DMCA'd. Otherwise, this is the exact same episode just without the track at the end. I don't remember the episode description so...enjoy(?)
Lively up de sound system masta selectah and pass de chalice roun' On this *timely* episode of Questions Like This, the boys round up the best movies about the Winter Olympics and conclude that Cool Runnings is the best underdog movie of all. We also talk about I, Tonya and a couple of others, but we mostly talked about how the Winter Olympics suck and their sports are dumb. Bumbaclot Plus: Star Wars deep cuts, stage moms, William Fichtner types, State Camp 75 for the Commissar's Skating Team, Watch the Throne, and more!
Black History Month! The boys are getting ready for an episode on Black Panther, but before that we take a look at some of the previous black superhero movies that came out throughout the years. From successes like Blade to absolute dogshit like Catwoman, black superheroes have had a rocky path to celluloid. Plus: Shaq, Esperanto, Underworld, shitty music from the 90s, we want a John Stewart Green Lantern movie, and more!
And we're back! After a short hiatus - including the Philadelphia Eagles creaming the Patriots - the boys return with their hottest takes on "The Greatest Showman." We are applying a Debordian/Zizekian analysis of spectacle and ideology on the hit musical, with an emphasis on the music and the juxtaposition of history and entertainment. Just kidding, I just wanted to write all that so my Master's degree doesn't go to waste! Plus: George Washington's Mammy, The Real Life Scrooge McDuck, possible films about Edison, and more!
Everyone's a little bit method these days, but we ask what's the craziest damn thing Daniel Day-Lewis has done for role? DDL (the cool way to refer to him) is one of the greatest working actors and certainly the one people think of when we say "method actor." From staying in a wheelchair the whole production time to building a log cabin and of course apprenticing as a butcher, DDL has done it all to embody his characters. Sadly he retired after last year's "Phantom Thread" to pursue his dream of being a real-life dressmaker. Plus: What is Method Acting?, the dark side of My Left Foot, Camilla Belle, and DDL's got some pipes on him!
Theater boys! This week we find out who wrote some of the best musicals of the 20th century: Rodgers and Hammerstein! From Oklahoma to The Sound of Music, the dynamic duo of stage and screen wrote some of the best loved musicals and tunes in the Great American Songbook and are responsible for keeping drama/theater class alive! We also discuss some of their relatively lesser known output (at least today, back in the day they were smash successes. Go ask your grandma.) Plus: Man Heaven, What is A Governess?, The Gazebo from Sound of Music, Huge Jackedman singing Show Tunes, and more!
New Year, same old pod. Given recent controversies over whitewashing and diversity in film, the boys (one Asian, one Jewish) dive into the history of whitewashing and racism in film. From Al Jolson in burnt cork, to Mr Yunioshi, and of course the hullabaloo over Ghost in the Shell, we try to suss out the roots and notable instances throughout the years. It's not just a black and white issue folks! Plus: Antoine Griezmann in full blackbody, Assassin's Creed and the inconsistent accents, White Euros playing Arabs, Fu Manchu/Charlie Chan dichotomy, evolution of South Asian stereotypes, and ambiguously ethnic actors.
2017: The year of horror movies, the year of too many blockbusters, and the year white men are cancelled (Weinstein, Spacey, etc). The boys run down the list of what they liked in 2017 and some movies they didn't. From a documentary about cats in Istanbul, to alternate endings of Get Out, and the most divisive Star War to date, no stone is left unturned. The boys also try to predict who will have a good year in 2018 and what might stink up cinemas next year. Happy new year from the Questions Like This boys. Plus: #Reylo, the nostalgia trend, Saoirse Ronan, Del Toro and Kojima, weak adaptations, and more!
It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! On this extra-length, uncut holiday special the boys rundown the list of bonafide holiday classics from TV Specials, feature films, and those best left forgotten. From Home Alone to the Star Wars Holiday Special they leave no stone unturned. We come up short on Hanukkah and Kwanzaa movies though, do better Hollywood! Plus: Muppet Christmas Carol, Mid-career Schwarzenegger, cable censorship, and Ramadan telenovelas.
Who is Tommy Wiseau? What is the Room? How was it made? When did it come out? Most importantly, why does it exist? The "Citizen Kane" of bad movies is firm favorite of the hosts and we unpack just about everything there is about this 50-car pile-up of a movie like: Wiseau not being able to recite his own damn lines, shooting simultaneously in two formats, sex scenes with really bad music, cast and crew turnover, the infamous billboard, and more dropped threads than a strip club. Plus, we're excited about "The Disaster Artist" and "Best F(r)iends."
Well folks, Hollywood is a shitty place for women...or is it? We take a look at the role women have had in films both on and off camera. From Alice Guy-Blaché to Pam Grier, women have been present despite all the shit they have to deal with (read: being harassed by creepy old men). We talked about some tropes and notable "women's" genres throughout the years but not chick flicks. And uh I'm sure we didn't even cover 1/10th of all the cool shit women have done in film (go take a Women in Film class folks) Also: Hedy Lamarr and Bluetooth, something about Harrison Ford, funny bits, meeting a tough sabra chick like Gal Gadot
Alright sports fans, which flicks would be in the sports movie hall of fame? We tackle all the major American sports and some little girl sport called soccer. We breakdown the criteria for some good ass sports movies, talk about bonafide classics, and some films best left forgotten. I stand by my Pacino comment. Also we are (finally) on iTunes and Stitcher, please subscribe and smash that mf like button fam. Send all complaints to questionslikethispod@gmail.com
In a special Halloween off-script spectacular, the boys talk about some of their favorite scary movies (for kids) like Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, and shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark? and Tales from the Crypt plus some grown up favorites like Hammer Horror and Universal Monsters. Sadly they forgot to bring up the most perfect Halloween movie of all time: Ernest Scared Stupid. Also: The Simpsons, Canadians, Ross as Rob Kardashian in that tv show, and more!
We've seen movies you people wouldn't believe. A Crusades movie with actual brown actors. Eight different cuts of a dystopian SF classic. All those films will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.
Well, the latter half of Nicolas Cage's career is less...uplifting than the first. What drives a man to such lows? This week we try to answer by looking at his post-millennium career. From National Treasure to Sonny and of course The Wicker Man, we discuss everything the Cager has done up to now plus some of his latest and upcoming movies! Also: DMX, Late Era Seagal, the tough questions, and more detours than the 405 at 2am
Our first ever two-parter! We ask just who the hell Academy Award winner (yes, folks!)Nicolas Cage really is and what are some of the stand outs from the first half of his milieu. From "Peggy Sue Got Married" to the action trilogy of masterpieces "The Rock, Con Air, and Face/Off," we discuss all the hits (and misses) of early Nic Cage. Join us next time for the incredible post-2000s period of Nic Cage which gets...weird. Also: Robocop, John Woo, antagonistic brother movies, does Sofia Coppola like her cousin?, and more banter!
This week we take a look into Shia LaBeouf's illustrious acting career (and then some.) From Even Stevens to Fury, Shia has done it all and perhaps he shouldn't have done a few of those things. Movies, television, performance art, and of course white boy rapping are just a few things under LaBeouf's belt! Also: Christy Carlson Romano, Disney Channel Original Movies, Michael Bay-isms, Shia falling asleep watching his own movies.
This week we discuss Manchester, New Hampshire's second favorite Jew: Adam Sandler. We ask who is still letting him make movies and is he actually retarded? (Doing that bit for too many years now.) We discuss his good movies (The Wedding Singer) and his many, many shitty ones (Pixels) plus many more! Apologies for the audio quality, one of our hosts was in Australia and he didn't bring his gear Down Under. Also: Modern Family, Rob Schneider, child actors, Whatever Happened To Fairuza Balk? and the Fonz
On this week's Questions Like This we ask whether or not there are any good movies based on video games. From Super Mario Bros to Assassin's Creed and almost every good, bad, badbadnotgood video game movie, we look at the things that make them work or not work. Plus: Everyone wants a shared universe franchise, being the Siskel and Ebert of this generation, "video games adjacent" films, upcoming shit, and more!
How is the Fast and Furious franchise still going strong to this day? What started out as "Point Break" with cars has become the go-to action franchise of the modern day. In this episode, we examine the evolution of the franchise from its humble roots, insane stunts, the addition of Dwayne Johnson, and of course, DRIVING AT HIGH SPEEDS! A franchise that doesn't require a lot of thought to watch it, it has endured for 17 years and by the time it's done, 10 movies will have been completed
Has every damn Stephen King story's been adapted? Yes they have, twice even. From Carrie, to Stand by Me, to The Night Flier, we go deep into the Stephen King film corpus to confirm our suspicions. Plus, our closing number is a big chuune from Big Driis tha Londoner
This week on Questions Like This we ask how Cannon Films managed to be in operation for as long as it did. We go into the infamous film company's deep cuts, ties to big 80s stars, and how Cannon basically created the ninja craze. Also: He-Man, Superman, Stallone face, and "OK USA!"
The saga begins. On this episode we ask whether or not Jackie Chan gets it on, his Canto-pop career, and how he almost died. We also talk about great moments in cinema racism and how one of our hosts wants to be dominated by Wonder Woman.
