So Oakland's broke city government spent five hours and eight employees removing $3,000 worth of citizen-installed speed bumps that actually stopped sideshows for eight months. Makes perfect sense, right? While residents dealt with stolen cars racing through neighborhoods, frightening children and creating chaos, the city ignored four years of complaints—until neighbors took action themselves. We break down how Oakland's Department of Transportation prioritized removing effective DIY safety measures over addressing the actual problem: reckless sideshow participants terrorizing communities. The city claims the speed bumps were a "hazard" while allowing the real hazards—spinning cars, shootings, and mayhem—to return the very next day. Meanwhile, homeless encampments operate without permits, but law-abiding taxpayers get penalized for protecting their neighborhoods. Is this really how cash-strapped Oakland should spend taxpayer money? Why remove solutions that work instead of fast-tracking legal replacements? What does it say when citizens have to choose between following the rules and protecting their families?
The guys discuss the Big Beautiful Bill as it has hit a speed bump, Putin is not playing ball and is bombing people left and right, and now we understand why Jake Tapper wrote his book.
Residents from several Edmonton neighbourhoods are formally requesting the Alberta government intervene to halt a bike lane expansion, calling it undemocratic, unsafe, and fiscally irresponsible. Meanwhile, a new anti-separatist group has filed a referendum application to ask Albertans if they want to remain in Canada, as citizen-initiated referendum activity continues to grow across the province. Alberta's government is also fast-tracking 11 school projects to keep pace with immigration-fuelled growth, and has launched the New North America Initiative — the only dedicated Canada-U.S. policy hub on the continent. All that and more on this week's episode of The Alberta Roundup with Isaac Lamoureux. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
City officials in Mansfield are considering bringing back weekend speed bumps along Park Avenue West, known as the "Miracle Mile", to combat reckless driving. The temporary measure, first tested last summer, led to a sharp drop in traffic incidents, but no decision has been made yet for this year. As summer approaches, officials are monitoring the area closely and say enforcement will ramp up if dangerous behavior returns.Support the show: https://richlandsource.com/membersSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Electric vehicle sales are growing, and are on track for another record year. But that growth is slowing down. A McKinsey study from earlier this year found that 46% of EV owners in the U.S. were likely to switch back to combustion engines for their next car. Among them, is Marketplace’s Meghan McCarty Carino. On a recent episode of “Marketplace Tech,” she explained why she decided to sell her EV and not buy another to replace it. Also on the show, how Instacart’s new SNAP eligibility tool works and why farmers are working extra jobs.

GS963: Summary Matt Davis, the creator of Puttercup is this week's guest. Putter Cup is an innovative golf hole insert that offers two products: the Speed Bump and the Center Cup. The Speed Bump is a 360-degree raised incline around the golf hole that forces golfers to hit the ball with enough speed and helps correct offline putts. The Center Cup is a hole reducer that shrinks the size of the hole by an inch. Davis emphasizes that putting should be simple and that training aids should focus on concentration rather than mechanics. He also discusses his partnership with the First Tee organization and his plans for future product expansion. There's even more on this episode! Most of us love to brainstorm with colleagues. But so often, our idea-generating sessions don't lead to anything tangible. Teams fill up walls with sticky notes about creative possibilities and suggestions for improvement, but nothing actually gets implemented. Some researchers even have a name for it: "innovation theater." This week, we explore the science of execution. Psychologist Bob Sutton tells us how to move from innovation theater . . . to actual innovation. You can find all the episodes in our Innovation 2.0 series in this podcast feed, or on our website, hiddenbrain.org.
