In 1989, Steven Soderbergh was on top of the world. By 1995, he was underneath...THE UNDERNEATH, that is! We're talking Sodie's very loose remake of the 1949 Robert Siodmak film noir CRISS-CROSS (and the 1934 novel on which it was based), noir in the 1990s, armored cars, and Soderbergh's evolving film language as he becomes the director we all know and love. Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 2013 dystopian cyberpunk social commentary ELYSIUM – written and directed by Neill Blomkamp; starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura, and William Fichtner. In the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.Elysium was the follow-up film for Neill Blomkamp after he exploded on the scene in 2009 with District 9, which garnered a Best Picture nomination and countless Top-Ten lists. This is Blomkamp is full cyberpunk mode and he does a great job of exploring the thematic signatures of our favorite sub-genre.So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. This time, though, we are covering the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, produced by Michael Bay, which came out while we were starting. It's awful, it's outrageous, and surprisingly adult for what was a kids' movie. So, for this special episode, we're doing something different: a syncable commentary, just like on the old CineProv Patreon. We will count off the film and tell you when to hit play. Whether you're watching along (it was on Amazon Prime when we recorded) or just listening, we're here to have fun, make jokes, and share in the absurdity. Tune in as Andy (Fat Dude Digs Flicks Movie Podcasts) slides back into his guest seat for a breakdown of Virtuosity, the 1995 sci-fi action thriller that sends a prisoner with a police officer background on a mission to stop a serial killer who's managed to escape his birthplace of virtual reality and is now terrorizing the real world. The investment that director Brett Leonard puts into VR through projects like Virtuosity and The Lawnmower Man, the lovably bonkers expanse of Russell Crowe's committed performance, the cheesy and dated 90s CGI in this cyberpunk landscape, and the missed opportunity to further flesh out the commentary on topics like incarcerated slave labor and police brutality stand out as a few of the subjects that this episode covers. Directed by Brett Leonard, Virtuosity stars Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Kelly Lynch, Stephen Spinella, William Forsythe, Louise Fletcher, William Fichtner, Costas Mandylor, Kevin J. Unclear and Present Danger

On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John watched Contact, the 1997 science-fiction drama directed by Robert Zemeckis. Based on the book by Carl Sagan, Contact stars Jodie Foster as Dr. Ellie Arroway, a SETI scientist who discovers extraterrestrial life and is eventually chosen to make first contact with the alien life. Foster is joined by a stacked cast of character actors, including Matthew McConaughey, James Woods, Tom Skerritt, William Fichtner, John Hunt, Rob Lowe and Angela Bassett. In their conversation, Jamelle and John discuss the distinctly neoliberal politics of the film as well as the extent to which Contact is a prominent example of the “end of history” utopianism that marked political and cultural life as the 1990s came to a close. You can find Contact to rent or purchase on Amazon or Apple TV.For the next episode of the podcast, Jamelle and John will watch Air Force One, directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starring Harrison Ford as the president who punches. And don't forget the Patreon, where they watch the political and military thrillers of the Cold War and talk about the politics of those decades! On the most recent episode of the Patreon, Jamelle and John watched the 1970 political drama WUSA. Of all of the dozens of post-Pulp Fiction imitators to be released throughout the 1990's, this might be one of the more memorable ones even though it opened roughly 25 years ago to middling box office.  It director Doug Liman's follow-up to his seminal indie gem of just three years - Swingers - and while he once again kept the cast young and the locations limited to LA (and Las Vegas), he went a different route with the overall setting and vibe.  Whereas Swingers brushed upon swing/cocktail culture (which was a thing back in the mid '90's), this time he shifted the general setting to...Rave Culture. :o The music, the drugs, the dancing....but even moreso any number of crazy situations occurring around it or adjacent to it.  Beyond that, there's not much to the plot other than this being one CRAZY night/day for several key characters played by Sarah Polley, Desmond Askew, Taye Diggs, Scott Wolf, Jay Mohr, Katie Holmes, and Timothy Olyphant.  Add to that cast notable players including William Fichtner, JE Freeman, Breckin Meyer, AND.....the on-screen debut of a Melissa McCarthy, time to GO!!!See below for a link to a special video featuring the cast "performing" one of the best needle-drops from the movie:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z4eQ5Jq4_E Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Love can occasionally present itself in some pretty strange ways....In theatres now, it's time to make an unexpected trip back to this hosts home province and an unexpectedly charming tale of true love.  It's time for 'French Girl'.Gordon (Zack Braff), is a hopeless romantic, finds his proposal plans are thrown into chaos when his girlfriend is swept away to Quebec by a job offer from her ex, a sophisticated celebrity chef. Determined to keep their love alive, Gordon leaves Brooklyn for her hometown, only to find himself hilariously out of his depth in attempting to charm her hard-to-impress, French-speaking family. This one was unexpectedly charming which is likely thanks to the somewhat fresh take that debut writer/directors James A Woods and Nicolas Wright took in telling this story.  It still has all the appropriate emotional moments without overtly leaning too hard into any expected story telling beats from the genre. We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with James and Nicholas in advance of the release to talk about the origins of the story, making Quebec City a character of its own, the distinct nature of Quebecois cinema and so very much more.

Remember the summer of 1998? Wolf-Biederman vs a rock the size of Texas? That's right. We were blessed with not one but two asteroid disaster movies: “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon”!If you're into more “serious” apocalyptic fare, then you probably prefer “Deep Impact.” If you're into summer tentpole blockbuster explosion-based apocalyptic flicks, then it's “Armageddon” for you. Both have star-studded casts with Morgan Freeman, Téa Leoni, Robert Duvall, Elijah Wood, Vanessa Redgrave, and Maximillian Schell in “Deep Impact” and Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Jason Isaacs, Ben Affleck, Will Patton, William Fichtner, Peter Stormare, Steve Buscemi, and Keith David in “Armageddon.”“Deep Impact” address some of the societal impacts (ahem) of the impending doom of the planet. We hear about and see a bit of the government plan to preserve our “way of life” by saving a million Americans in some caves in Missouri. “Armageddon” discusses no such plan. Of course, there's no time since they discover the asteroid with only 18 to hire Bruce Willis' offshore drilling team to slingshot around the moon like the Coyote (of Roadrunner fame) and destroy the thing. We call “Armageddon” an apocalyptic comedaction film. It is doom-tastic, tear-jerkingly hilarious, and full of action and explosions.Which one is your favorite? Elaine and Mark from The Honeymoon Period podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Elaine's choice Heat. Heat (1995) is a heist drama written and directed by Michael Mann. Its ensemble cast features Al Pacino as Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, LAPD, Robert De Niro as Neil McCauley, Val Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis, Jon Voight as Nate, Tom Sizemore as Michael Cheritto, Diane Venora as Justine Hanna, Amy Brenneman as Eady, Ashley Judd as Charlene Shiherlis, Mykelti Williamson as Sergeant Bobby Drucker, Wes Studi as Lieutenant Sammy Casals, Ted Levine as Detective Mike Bosko, William Fichtner as Roger Van Zant, Natalie Portman as Lauren Gustafson, Tom Noonan as Kelso AND Hank Azaria as Alan Marciano. Neil McCauley leads a gang of elite criminals, but when a robbery of bearer bonds goes sour when one of the crew kills a guard he ends up in the path of Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, a hardened and obsessive detective. McCauley discovers Hanna on his tail but doesn't spook and agrees to one last heist. Heat is widely considered a masterpiece, the now iconic coffee scene marked the first time Pacino and De Niro shared the screen together and it is one of Christopher Nolan's favourite films. Recommendability scores reflected some of the criticisms (particularly around the role of women) but were still high. Lower scores for small screen reflected that it is one of those films best watched the big screen and gives an overall rating of 3.75.   [supsystic-tables id=328] Episode #315 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #315 Crew of Mark (@mark_greg) and Elaine (@elainegwrites) from The Honeymoon Period podcast Find their Websites online at https://t.co/CiX1Wv5dyH and at https://twitter.com/guardian and at https://twitter.com/bbcnewcastle Please make sure you give them some love   More about Heat For more info on Heat, you can visit Heat IMDb page here or Heat Rotten Tomatoes page here. Unclear and Present Danger

For this week's episode, Jamelle and John watched Kathryn Bigelow's 1995 cult favorite Strange Days, a collaboration with James Cameron inspired by the political and social turmoil of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Although not quite “cyberpunk” — it isn't a William Gibson pastiche like its contemporary Johnny Mnemonic — Strange Days borrows heavily from the genre and its various conceits. Strange Days stars Ralph Fiennes as protagonist Lenny Nero, Angela Bassett as “Mace,” Juliette Lewis as Faith and Tom Sizemore as Max, with appearances from Vincent D'Onofrio, Michael Wincott, William Fichtner and Richard Edson. Here is a brief plot synopsis:Set in the year 1999 during the last days of the old millennium, the movie tells the story of Lenny Nero, an ex-cop who now deals with data-discs containing recorded memories and emotions. One day he receives a disc which contains the memories of a murderer killing a prostitute. Lenny investigates and is pulled deeper and deeper in a whirl of blackmail, murder and rape. Will he survive and solve the case? The tagline for Strange Days is “New Year's Eve 1999. Anything is possible. Nothing is forbidden.”Strange Days is available to stream on HBO Max and is available for rent or purchase on iTunes and Amazon. Meanwhile, Hobie tries to hide a dog from Mitch and Cort buys an antique diving suit that immediately ends up stolen. Justin expects werewolves, but gets Eddie instead. William Fichtner's part in Go once again comes up in conversation. Erik accuses the AI of always picking Adam Driver. The pair disagree on The Faculty. The ocean proves to be a horror. Justin credits Craig with a fantastic physique. He also finally encounters what Allison Pregler calls "the Death Pier." Captain Thorpe's descent into madness continues. Ridley Scott's terrific depiction of the events of the Battle of Mogadishu kicks off Operations week as we watch 2001's BLACK HAWK DOWN. I thought I was being so clever picking this, with the disastrous events of Operation Gothic Serpent in which US troops extracted General Mohamed Farrah Aidid from the Somali capital at a terrible human cost providing the backdrop to a memorable scene of impromptu battlefield femoral artery surgery. If I'd patted myself on the back any harder at the idea of picking a movie that featured a memorable operation within a memorable operation I'd have broken my own spine so naturally when a listener offers up an example of an operation within an operation within an operation for us to discuss in this week's main episode it crushed my fragile ego to oblivion. Bravo listener! Also bravo to Ridley Scott, who delivers up a still spectacular looking by today's standards action masterpiece with an incredible cast of, well, too many to mention really but Tom Sizemore, Eric Bana, Ewan McGregor, Orlando Bloom, William Fichtner, Jason Isaacs, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Jeremy Piven, Ioan Gruffudd, Sam Shepard, Ewen Bremner, Ashton Kutcher and Tom Hardy debuting here as 'Thomas'. You can see the influence this had on video game franchises, with everything from its saturated colour palette to its pro-military but anti-war themes copied comprehensively in first person shooters. Another strong recommend from the Dads. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Incredibly offensive casting, supernatural coyotes, a tragic on-set death, and a $190M+ loss make “The Lone Ranger” one of the biggest flops of all time. Find out why cannibalism plays a surprising role in this film - years before Armie Hammer's disturbing DM's - and what Johnny Depp really said when he found himself on the wrong side of history. Saddle up as we trot our way through the notoriously problematic 2013 film directed by Gore Verbinski, starring Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Helena Bonham-Carter, William Fichtner, Ruth Wilson, and some very carnivorous rabbits.

What an episode this week. Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy, Bad Blood) joins us to talk about how he's had to learn to slow down and get back to being himself during points in his life when his career was on the rise and he was focused on pleasing others. Coatesy shares fond memories working with Bruce Willis and Kevin Costner, but also remembers other times on set where he had to stick up for people against difficult, rude talent. We also talk about his special relationship with William Fichtner, how doing a Sons of Anarchy rewatch has made him realize the impact of the show, and what it's like to work alongside his daughter in the new Neon Lights. William Fichtner (Prison Break, Black Hawk Down) joins us this week to share his multi decade journey through Hollywood working alongside legends on the screen and how it all started with a random referral while in college. Ficthner gives insight into his process and how, without fail, he always puts in the work before playing any role; expanding on this with a story of his blind character in Robert Zemeckis' Contact. We also talk about favoring performance over appearance, entering an industry as an outsider, and not chasing people's approval. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
