This week Nate Heath of the NotNerd Podcast takes a deep dive into the 2016 children's number one hit by Pink Fong, "Baby Shark." This classic nursery rhyme/campfire song took the internet by storm when a South Korean children's entertainment company released an updated pop version of it. With it's popularity further fueled by a viral dance craze and the TikTok app, Baby Shark topped the Kids Digital Sales Chart and is one of the most viewed videos ever on Youtube. Did Pinkfong rip off another artist's version of the song? What are the original gruesome lyrics? Who is Blippi and why are parents so mad at him? This week is Part II of our Halloween spooktacular! Enjoy the return of the living Doctor Delirious as we dig our claws deep into Bobby "Boris" Pickett's 1962 number one hit: "The Monster Mash." Released in the summer of 1962, predictably the song caught on in a flash when Halloween rolled around several months later. The song was the only hit single from an entire album of spooky, monster themed tracks almost too similar to be distinguished from each other. Pickett went on to base his entire career on a pretty good Boris Karloff impression and would continue releasing similar records well into the 1980s. How many songs on an album can you put the word "Monster" in the title? How did they create the spooky sound effects in the opening of the song? Which punk-rocker-turned-rapper may have based his style off Bobby Pickett's "Monster Rap"? This week Aaron Rubio dives onto the musical grenade that is "Disco Duck", the 1976 number one hit by Rick Dees and his Cast of Idiots. Perhaps known best for his long-running Top 40 countdown program, Rick Dees also recorded a string of disco parody songs in the 1970s that featured duets with personified woodland creatures. Despite the ridiculous nature of the songs, one of them managed to hit number one, thanks to the cocaine-fueled, undiscerning sonic landscape of the disco era. Why did Rick Dees let producers of Saturday Night Fever use "Disco Duck" in the film, but not allow it on the soundtrack? How is the tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde reflected in this song? What dollar amount can be put on the emotional trauma caused by parading around in a giant duck suit? All these questions and more will be answered on this week's episode of Single File. This week marks part II of the Snowpocalypse Chronicles, with Doctor Delirious serving up personal youthful experiences surrounding the 1966 number one hit by the Monkees, "I'm a Believer." Possibly the world's first manufactured boy band, The Monkees were created to fill the roles of fictional characters on a concept TV show. The result was a slew of real records that the actors claimed they had little to do with musically. However, their managers maintained that the Monkees were indeed a real band, creating confusion and mockery among the press and fans. Did the Monkees play their own instruments? Why is Davey Jones so stressed out? How many members of a band need to be included in a reunion tour in order to use the original band name? This week the Doctor makes a house call in a blizzard to cover the 1994 number one from the alternative hits chart, "Loser", by Beck. Working low-paying jobs in early 90s LA and playing in coffee shops, this song was created out of Beck's necessity to keep indifferent audiences engaged. This hip-hop-based-folk-song is full of bizarre, disconnected lyrics that are one-upped by an even more random, low-budget avant-garde music video. Is Beck the most disappointing live act in show business? What came first: Beck's musical success or joining the Church of Scientology? Are things gonna change? Can you feel it? Originally a concept group assembled by the hottest producers in the business, TLC scored several number one hits with almost zero creative input in their music. With the exception of a few small rap parts, one man was responsible for the production of nearly their entire catalog. Who was this man behind the curtain? This week Lindsay Deacon drops by to share her comprehensive expertise on the 1989 number one hit "Rock On" by dreamy musician/actor Michael Damian. From the soundtrack to the film "Dream a Little Dream" starring the dynamic duo Corey Feldman and Corey Haim, the success of this track was compounded by a multi-verse spanning cross-promotion. That's right, the music video also debuted on The Young and the Restless as the hit single by Damian's fictional character on the show, Danny Romalotti. If that isn't strange enough, the characters on Y&R don't seem to be the least bit curious as to why Corey Feldman is dancing next to him in the video. Who originally recorded this song in the 70s? Why aren't there any live performance videos of Michael Damian on YouTube? Where does Mickey Thomas of Starship factor into all of this? As an ode to the joys and pitfalls of life on the road, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" has become a cultural metaphor for taking the good with the bad. Why did Bret Michaels write such a sad, sad song? Hailing from rural England, these young men rose to fame in the UK imitating the sounds of the "Madchester" dance-rock club scene of the late 80s. Scoring a number one in the USA was seemingly a stroke of pure luck, but in reality, one monumental entertainer's love for this song is the sole reason for their success.
