Erin & Elizabeth talk with Gen-X icon Ione Skye (Say Anything, River's Edge, Zodiac), the actress and author of the NYT-bestselling memoir SAY EVERYTHING. Ione's father is the 60s folk wizard and Sunshine Superman, Donovan. But while Donovan did claim Ione's brother Dono as his own, he referred to Ione since birth only as "the girl," only meeting her for the first time when she was by that point a famous teenager. Ione tells us about how his abandonment affected her early romantic relationships with musicians (Anthony Kiedis, Adam Horovitz), what her husband Ben Lee has taught her about consistency, love and fatherhood, and how the road from rejection to reconciliation is paved with self-protection. Ooh! I bet you thought that was the Beach Boys! But nope, it's the Sunrays, and believe me when I say they live for the sun. Even heroes wear sunscreen though--there's only one Sunshine Superman who gets away with soaking up the sun. Chase away those SAD winter blues with our Sunny Songs series.

Sunshine Superman, released in 1966 by Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan, is often regarded as a pioneering album in the psychedelic rock genre. Blending folk, jazz, pop, and Eastern influences, the album showcases Donovan's signature dreamy vocals and poetic lyricism. The title track, "Sunshine Superman," became a major hit, with its swirling melodies and themes of love and mysticism. Tracks like "Season of the Witch" also contributed to its enduring legacy, making the album a landmark of the 1960s counterculture and a timeless exploration of the era's experimental sound.Listen to the album on SpotifyListen to the album on Apple MusicWhat did you think of this album? Episode 469"Sugar"Cinematographer: Richard Rutkowski. An active cinematographer whose work encompasses indie features, documentary, commercials, and major streaming productions, Richard is based in New York and also works extensively overseas. His photography on the first seasons of FX's Cold War spy drama The Americans drew widespread critical acclaim. Likewise his camerawork on the wartime drama Manhattan, set in Los Alamos during the top secret creation of the atom bomb, earned glowing mentions and two ASC Award Nominations for Best Cinematography. Recent projects include Apple's Sugar, starring Colin Farrell and James Cromwell, and the WW II epic Masters of the Air, produced by Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Additional credits include the pilot and three seasons of Amazon's international action hit Jack Ryan, USA Network's surrealist drama Falling Water, produced by Gale Ann Hurd, and Hulu's Castle Rock for producers Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason. Most recently Richard filmed the pilot block of The Hunting Wives, a new series produced by Lionsgate for the Starz Network.Growing up in Provincetown, Massachusetts; Fort Smith, Arkansas; and Water Mill, New York - disparate locations that traced the career of his late father, landscape painter Casimir Rutkowski - Richard developed an appreciation of context, diversity, and the examined details of individual environments. His early ambition was to become an architect. While attending Harvard College, Richard began making 16mm short films mixing live action, stop animation, and electronic sound composition. One such project was Sunshine Superman, created with the artist Christopher Knowles and screened in festivals and in art gallery exhibition ever since. While working as first assistant to extraordinary cinematographers such as Ed Lachman ASC; Eric Edwards; David Stockton ASC; and the late Freddie Francis BSC, Rutkowski continued lensing short films and indie features for emerging directors. After earning a Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance for Kevin Asher Green's minimalist mini-DV film Homework, Rutkowski shot director Neil Burger's debut feature, Interview with the Assassin, nominated for Independent Spirit Awards in Best First Feature and Best Cinematography categories.Working with a legendary mentor, theater maestro Robert Wilson, over 20 years led to Richard filming the artist's initial HD Video Portraits. Meticulously staged, slow-moving images of Mikhail Baryshnikov, Winona Ryder, Brad Pitt, Steve Buscemi, and Robert Downey Jr. sparked a growing collection that has been exhibited internationally ever since. Over a three year period Rutkowski produced, shot and directed The Space in Back of You in homage to Japanese dancer Suzushi Hanayagi, a mesmerizing, eclectic talent whose approach to stage movement deeply influenced Wilson and other avant-guard luminaries. This film premiered at New York's Lincoln Center and has screened on Arte Channel, the Baryshnikov Center for Dance, and at the Pompidou Center in Paris. Filming groups of workers and individual laborers in painterly long takes, Richard collaborated with artist Sharon Lockhart on Double Tide, Lunchbreak and Exit, projects since screened at MoMA in New York, LA's Hammer Museum and other major gallery and museum installations over the last twelve years.https://linktr.ee/mondaymorningcritic

It's Halloween, so it's time for spooky episodes of Star Trek! There are some ominous cucumber sandwiches, some salt and a lot of air vents this year! The Man Trap gives us the classic TOS villain of the Salt Vampire and some shapeshifting shenanigans. There's also an amazing glove puppet plant. Dead Stop has a brightly-lit rest stop with offers that are too good to be true. Including why it was on ‘spookiest Star Trek episode' listicles. Persistence of Vision brings us some horror in the Delta Quadrant as it looks like Janeway's losing her mind. The characters and sandwiches from her Gothic novel holodeck program are appearing in the real world! 10:22 - The Man Trap (TOS) 37:58 - Dead Stop (Enterprise) 1:05:02 - Persistence of Vision (Voyager) Miles guested on Breakfast in the Ruins where he talked about some more of James Herbert's rat books! https://breakfastintheruins.podbean.com/e/halloween-special-2023-james-herbert-s-domain/ Talking points include: James Herbert, Classic Dr Who, Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense, Rupert & The Frog Song, The Wicked + The Divine, Yellow Submarine, paintballing, Werewolf, Doctor Zachary Smith, Seth MacFarlane, Logan's Run, The Mountain Goats, Lost, Robson & Jerome, PJ & Duncan, Todd in the Shadows' review of From Justin to Kelly, Cube, The OC, Miami Vice, some Cube 2: Hypercube action, space in Star Trek is Warhammer terrifying, Stargate Universe, Dead Space, Mariah Carey has traumatised us both, Bothans, Mass Effect 2 Relationship Choices and a budget Colin Firth. Oh, and occasionally Star Trek. Pedants Corner: Miles should have said Series One, not Season One of Dr Who, but he was having fun and that level of pedantry is more Charlie's thing Miles was right, Sunshine Superman is indeed a DC Comics character Charlie means that Seth MacFarlane might have gone back in time in a Trials and Tribble-ations way, not a Trouble with Tribbles way Apparently Harry Kim's girlfriend Libby is actually real. Who knew? Charlie has now seen Taylor Swift: Eras and it was very good. Marah Strauch is a director, producer, and writer of documentary films, unscripted TV, branded content, and commercials. Her films have screened at TIFF, Hot Docs, Tribeca, and many other festivals worldwide. Her debut documentary feature, Sunshine Superman, provides a breathtaking tribute to Carl Boenish, the creator of BASE jumping. The New York Times hailed it as a "masterful debut," and Indiewire called it "one of the best docs of the year." CNN picked up Sunshine Superman as a "CNN film." Her most recent feature documentary, Vice Versa: Chyna, offers a complex portrait of the late and groundbreaking wrestler Chyna. It premiered on Vice to over 2 million viewers and can currently be seen on Hulu. Strauch holds a degree in fine art from RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), which informs her aesthetic approach to both film and commercial work. She is a dual Austrian American citizen, bringing a global perspective to her work. We will discuss her approach to documentary filmmaking.

After many years, I'm happy to say we have got Mark Waid as a guest. And what better subject to discuss, fresh off his new book Dark Crisis - Big Bang, than the concept of continuity and the multiverse. Why has the idea of multiple worlds become so popular in the last decade or so, when it was something often thought as troublesome years earlier? We discuss how omnipresent it is now, in comics, movies and more. We also talk about the original Crisis in 1985, including Mark editing an issue of Amazing Heroes all about the post-Crisis landscape at DC following the series. There's also talk about Hypertime and other attempts DC made to try and “simplify” continuity over the years and how things are going the other way now. There's also a deep-dive on things like The Super Sons, The Inferior Five, Cancelled Comics Cavalcade and more. We also discuss Mark's current books at DC, including Batman-Superman World's Finest, Batman vs Robin and the upcoming Shazam (don't call him Captain Marvel).

SERIES UPDATE: We some terribly sad news to share with our listeners. SPITBALL's glorious singer and guitarist Molly Fitch passed away last week, and we are just at a complete loss. With her family's blessing, we are going to continue publishing our interviews with her, and leave the next episodes intact as a last document of Molly's thoughts about life, music and life in New York. This "behind the song" episode is all about SPITBALL's cover of Donovan's Sunshine Superman, and includes a never-heard before recording from their very first CBGB's show.

Lots of music was coming out of Detroit in the 60's, and one of the high energy groups coming out of the Michigan rock scene was Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. The group had crossover appeal with a little soul, a little funk, and a lot of energy. Breakout...!!! was their second album, and was indeed a breakout for this Motor City band.Mitch Ryder (stage name for William Sherille Levise, Jr ) was originally a backup singer with a soul band, but racial animosities forced the white Mitch Ryder to move on. Much of the music done by Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels was cover songs. The group was legendary for their onstage presence and intensity. Breakout...!!! was an album compiled and released only after the songs had been released as singles. Walking the DogThis song is a cover performed by Rufus Thomas, and was done by many groups."Ooh Poo Pah Doo"If you get the image of a toga party when listening to this music, you're not alone! This song was originally written and performed by Jessie Hill, and was a hit for Hill in 1960. You get a sense for Ryder's vocal chops on this one.Little Latin Lupa LuThis Righteous Brothers cover was mentioned in the film “Hi Fidelity.” The sound of a revved up R&B permeates all of the rock genre.Devil With A Blue Dress OnOne of the more famous Ryder songs, this was first recorded by Shorty Long in 1964, but Ryder's version would pick up the tempo, and proved more popular than the original.ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “Star Trek”This long-standing staple of the science fiction genre got its start in 1966, and the original series would run for (only!) 3 years.STAFF PICKS:“Working In The Coal Mine” by Lee DorseyRob presents a song written by producer Allen Toussaint, and recorded by New Orleans native Lee Dorsey. Dorsey was in boxing and auto repair before becoming a singer. You may be more familiar with the Devo version of this cover recorded in 1981.“Sunshine Superman” by DonovanBruce features the title track from Donovan's third album. This would be his breakthrough song. John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page were in this band, and would go on to fame in Led Zeppelin. ...“Superman or Green Lantern ain't got a-nothin' on me.”“Who Do You Think You Are?” by The ShindogsBrian's staff pick features the harmonies of LA-based Shindogs, who were formed as the house band for the ABC television show “The Shindigs.” They remained with the show until it's cancellation in 1965, and continued on until shortly after this song was released.“I'll Keep Holding On” by The ActionWayne's staff pick was a mod group, playing soul-influenced pop music in London. They had no hits, but were a warm-up band for The Who, and were known as a great live band. This song was originally recorded by a Motown group called The Marvelettes.INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Wade in the Water” by Ramsey Lewis TrioWe finish off this week with a horn-based instrumental gospel song on the charts at the time.
The rumor has circulated for years ... in 1966 George Harrison recorded a guitar track for friend and companion Donovan's signature song, "Sunshine Superman." Or did he? Dan Markus put the question to Donovan, who in turn puts the rumor to rest once and for all. (For more from Dan Markus' Wax Museum, visit http://danmarkuswaxmuseum.com)

Sunshine Superman is the third album from British singer-songwriter Donovan that took him from folk troubadour to pop sensation. The difference between the poetic somber folk songs and catchy pop can be jarring not to mention it angers Rob.
Davie Scott speaks to Donovan and pals about the dippy, trippy Sunshine Superman album.
This week Kevin Palmer returns to the studio to take a savage journey into the heart of "Sunshine Superman", the 1966 number one hit by Donovan. As the catalyst for the psychedelic rock movement, the father of Ione Skye, and a major inspiration for the Beatles, Donovan is at the center of a pop culture universe so vast and interconnected, there should be a thing called Six Degrees of Donovan. What Beatles song did Donovan supposedly write? What fate befell the Love Syndicate and Dreamworld Earth in the #7 issue of Final Crisis? Would the movie Wayne's World exist if it wasn't for "Sunshine Superman"? All these questions and more will be answered in this weeks episode of Single File. Your participation matters. A tandem jump enamored Levi Arnone with the art of sky diving. Yet, falling did not sufficiently quench his pursuit for flight. Soon, he found himself pursuing wingsuit training and delving into the world of BASE jumping. Levi and Jason spent an afternoon in Levi’s backyard discussing the intricacies of flight and falling, the legal issues, dealing with risk, and why “the perfectly good airplane” joke needs to be retired. Four new stories! Three origins! Or, like, nine depending on how you look at Secret Origins #48. It starts when Ryan Daly and the Irredeemable Shag try—with little-to-no success—to crack the origin of Ambush Bug. Then Doug Zawisza and Ryan discuss the origin of Stanley & His Monster. Beginning his career as a key player in the UK folk revival of the early 1960s, Donovan scored early hits with “Catch the Wind” and “Colours.” Embracing jazz, world music, and psychedelic influences, he expanded his sound and found success with the major hits “Sunshine Superman” and “Mellow Yellow” in 1966. Additional hits followed, including the Top 20 US singles “Epistle to Dippy” and “There is a Mountain,” as well as the Top 10 hits “Hurdy Gurdy Man” and “Atlantis.” He has recorded nearly thirty albums. Donovan’s songs have been recorded by Neil Young, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Richie Havens, Van Dyke Parks, Jefferson Airplane, the Animals, the Allman Brothers Band, Cher, Eartha Kitt, Glen Campbell, Johnny Rivers, Duane Eddy, Buck Owens, Chet Atkins, Kenny Loggins, Susanna Hoffs, Joan Jett, Sarah McLachlan, Richard Thompson, and many others. He was awarded the prestigious BMI Icon award in 2009, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, and inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014.

In The Queue is walking on air with excitement to have acclaimed filmmaker Marah Strauch join this discussion of her excellent new documentary, 'Sunshine Superman'. Strauch's film explores the romance between Jean and Carl Boenish set against the backdrop of their pioneering leap into the creation of BASE jumping. Full of hair-raising archival footage and a moving collection of period songs, it's no wonder Strauch's film has been shown at every major documentary film festival in the U.S. Andrew and Phil were pleased to speak with Marah about the making of her film, as well as the special link she has with Phil, involving one German warrior-poet... You can download the podcast here by right-clicking on the hypertext link and choosing "save as", or you can use the convenient player attached to this post.
The Martian underholder fra start til slutt. Louder Than Bombs berører uten å rope høyt. The Intern er nesten konfliktløs.
The future used to be a bright shiny thing covered in chrome and dreams. But as "Tomorrowland" reminds us, the future isn't what it used to be. That could be a good thing...or a very bad thing. In addition to looking ahead to the future, Rafer and Kristen also look back at the life of BASE jumper Carl Boenish, who's the subject of "Sunshine Superman." They also look at the present way that wars are fought, in "Good Kill." They also do a deep dive into this week's Sweatpants pick, "Scrotal Recall," and fight over whether or not this week's Mystery Date, "The Loft," is any good. All that, plus trivia!
A conversation with director Marah Strauch about her new documentary Sunshine Superman chronicling the history of BASE jumping. The film premieres in theatres in New York and LA on May 22nd.
