Paul Simon is one of most venerable and some would say inscrutable songwriters out there today. After a string of hits in the 60's and 70's, he was coming off of a couple of unsuccessful albums in the 80's. Looking for inspiration, he turned to the music of South Africa and created the album Graceland, which was a huge success and completely revitalized his career. We discuss the album's hit, "You Can Call Me Al."Connect with us at tapeheadspod.com.RELATED LINKS:Paul Simon, on SpotifyOur You Can Call Me Al playlist, on SpotifyPaul Simon, "You Can Call Me Al" official video, on YouTube

Jordan and Alex revisit the beloved 1986 masterwork that blended South African sounds with American dance pop — and became one of the most controversial albums of the decade. Paul Simon's unsanctioned trip to Johannesburg in the era of Apartheid violated a UN boycott, kicking off an international firestorm that nearly cost Simon his life. (Until E Street Band guitarist Stevie Van Zandt intervened...) They'll discuss the complex cultural questions surrounding the creation of this album, and also delve into history of these fascinating rhythms and melodies in South Africa. Plus, you'll learn how the album never would have come together without SNL producer Lorne Michaels, discover the dinner party faux-pas that inspired "You Can Call Me Al,' and hear why "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" was a last minute addition to the tracklist.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Key talking points - One hell of a genre change, a hypothetically well chosen recording location, "basically Al Jourgensen doing things", a You Can Call Me Al cover that no one wants to hear, Kyle gets quite annoyed about conspiracy theories and Rich isn't sure what to expect when he listens to 'Yellowcake'. In this dialogue, Dr. Montoya discusses the missteps leaders can make when attempting to fairly and meaningfully recognize individual and team performance. This episode explores how employee recognition is a powerful driver of positive changes across any team or workgroup within an organization. Listen in to uncover the key lessons that were hiding behind this leader's missteps. Key Lessons: 1) Be intentional about developing a recognition plan that includes rounding. This allows your staff to feel valued by you and know they can raise their concerns to you with you seeing it through to resolution! 2) Remember not everyone will expect or want recognition in the same way. If in doubt, just ask! 3) Don't only show recognition when tasks are complete, instead work to recognize and appreciate employees throughout all times! You've heard so many great gems from Al Montoya, so now listen in to “You Can Call Me Al” by Paul Simon to hear the song he is often referenced! Please check out additional services here: https://dvagov.sharepoint.com/sites/VHANationalCenterforOrganizationDevelopment

Who's That Girl? A New Girl Podcast

This podcast covers New Girl Season 2, Episode 3, Fluffer, which originally aired on October 2, 2012 and was directed by Fred Goss and written by J.J. Philbin and Kim Rosenstock. Here’s a quick recap of the episode:Jess shares with the loft mates that she’s having non-committal sex with Sam, but realizes she needs more to get in the mood. When Schmidt forces the boys to help, Nick ends up serving as her “Emotional Fluffer”. Meanwhile, Schmidt tries to convince a woman he met at a club that he’s a political candidate’s son, “Tugg Romney”. Winston is struggling in this episode as he and Shelby are in a rut.We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Mitt Romney (& Mormonism) - Schmidt pretends to be a son of politician, Mitt Romney who is also of Mormon faith. Kanye West - Schmidt wears a belt with whales on it that he says Kanye West wore. Additional Pop Culture References such as:The Walking Dead - Nick mentioned Jess was a “big girl” and could watch The Walking Dead alone. The Walking Dead is an American zombie post-apocalyptic horror television series based on the comic book series of the same name.[Jimmy] Fallon - Schmidt pretends that if he were to call Kanye West before bed, he would ask him if he was watching Fallon. James (Jimmy) Fallon is an American comedian, actor, television host, singer, writer, and producer, known for his work in television as a cast member on Saturday Night Live and is currently the host of late-night talk show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The Notebook - Jess mentions that she and Sam had a bad makeout session and just laid there like the old people in The Notebook. The Notebook is a romantic drama movie based on a book of the same name where an elderly man comforts his wife with dementia and remembers their love story; the elderly couple is often shown as laying together quietly.Adele - Winston mentions that men and women who are just friends should never do anything concerning Adele. Adele is an English singer and songwriter known for her melodic ballads. She is one of the world’s best-selling music artists with sales of over 120 million records.Taylor Swift - Cece noticed that Schmidt was going through a “Taylor Swift range of emotions”. Taylor Swift is an American singer and songwriter known for her narrative and emotional lyricism, which often takes inspiration from her personal life. She has won 11 Grammys (3 for Album of the Year) and 23 Billboard music awards.[Law & Order] SVU - Shelby asks Winston if he wants to come upstairs and watch SVU. SVU is short for Law & Order: SVU, which is a television series following the Special Victims Unit, a specially trained squad of detectives in the N.Y.P.D., who investigate sexually related crimes. This show is a spinoff of Law & Order and has now aired 492 episodes, surpassing the original show which only had 456 episodes.[Everybody Loves] Raymond - When Winston asks if Shelby’s sure she wants to watch SVU, she mentions she’s too tired to watch Raymond. Raymond is short for the television series, Everybody Loves Raymond, which is a sitcom about the experiences of Ray Barone and his family.Moonwalking - Nick moonwalks into his room after hearing Jess play the mixtape he made for her. Moonwalking is a dance move in which the dancer glides backwards but their body actions suggest forward motion. It became popular following Michael Jackson's moonwalk during the performance of his song, "Billie Jean”. Nick’s Sexy Mixtape Songs - Nick provides Jess with a mixtape to play to help get her in the mood. Songs on that mixtape that are either listed or played in the episode are:"The Humpty Dance" - "The Humpty Dance" is a song by the rap group Digital Underground from their debut album Sex Packets. Released as the second single from the album in January 1990, it reached No. 11 on the pop chart, No. 7 on the R&B chart, and No. 1 on the Billboard Rap Singles chart."You Can Call Me Al" - Written by American singer and songwriter Paul Simon, the lyrics to “You Can Call Me Al” follow an individual seemingly experiencing a midlife crisis."LAY YOU DOWN" - The song is performed by Spank and is used in many television shows of the 2010s and beyond. We also cover Schmidt’s description of how he wants to be Kanye’s friend as the “Schmidtism” in this episode. Our “not” for “In the 2020s” was how Schmidt discussed race in this episode when talking to Winston and Cece but our “yes” for “In the 2020s” was how Nick set his own boundaries for his friendship with Jess. Additionally, we also discussed the careers of David Walton (Sam), and Taryn Southern (Megan). Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we did not discuss in the podcast: Rebecca Delgado Smith (Courtney, one of the Kappas), Anisha Adusumilli (April, another Kappa), and Tarina Pouncy (the waitress). We also talk about how Nick’s speech to Jess at the restaurant incorporated aspects of the Animaniacs in the way he said “Hello Nurse”. You can watch a clip of the Animaniacs version here and the rebooted version that inverts the gender norms here. We also talk about David Walton’s robes which you can find here. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Olympics - When Schmidt is preparing to pretend to be a Romney, he talks about how the family had a Romney Olympics every summer which he felt would be similar to the real Olympics. The Olympic Games are an international sports competition featuring summer and winter sports where thousands of athletes from around the world compete and represent their countries. They are held every 4 years with either a Summer or Winter Olympics every 2 years. That’s All She Wrote - When Jess is considering breaking up with Sam because she needs more out of a relationship, she says the phrase “and that’s all she wrote”. This is an American idiom used to indicate when a person’s plan has come to a sudden stop and that there is nothing else to be said about the matter. While the origin of the phrase is unknown, most attribute it to the Dear John letters sent during World War II. There have also been several songs written about this phrase. This episode got an 8/10 Rating from Kritika and an 8.5/10 from Kelly and we both had the same favorite character: Nick! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 4!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

Deze specifieke sound horen we dan ook terug in nummers als "I Know What I Know" en "Homeless". Zijn nummer "You Can Call Me Al'' werd zijn grootste hit nadat hij in 1970 stopte met het duo Simon & Garfunkel. Bakithi Kumalo (born 10 May 1956) is a South African bassist, composer, and vocalist. Kumalo is most known for his fretless bass playing on Paul Simon's 1986 album Graceland, in particular the bass run on "You Can Call Me Al". Bakithi was born in the Soweto township of Johannesburg, surrounded by relatives who loved music and actively performed. He got his first job at the age of seven filling in for his uncle's bass player. Kumalo worked as a session musician in South Africa during the 1970s and early 1980s, eventually becoming a top session bassist and accompanying international performers during their South African tours. In 1985, Kumalo was introduced to Paul Simon by producer Hendrick Lebone during the sessions for Simon's Graceland album. Kumalo traveled with Simon to New York to finish the sessions, and after the accompanying concert tour, "spent several years commuting between Soweto and New York City" before permanently settling in the United States. Kumalo has toured regularly with Simon since then. He has also released several solo records, and continued to perform as a session musician with artists such as Joan Baez, Cyndi Lauper, Herbie Hancock, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Randy Brecker, Grover Washington Jr., and Mickey Hart. bakithikumalobass.com

This week Johnny Grundo goes off the charts to discuss the 1986 Paul Simon hit "You Can Call Me Al". Was this song a number one? Sort of. Yes and no. Boldly venturing into Apartheid-era South Africa despite an industry-wide cultural boycott, Paul Simon wrote and recorded this album to reinvent himself and jumpstart his slumping solo career. The catchy rhythms paired with a playful music video featuring a cameo appearance from actor/comedian Chevy Chase helped "Graceland" become his best-selling solo album to date. What other music videos has Chevy Chase appeared in? What sketch comedy show had an entire episode based on this song? Who is really playing that bass solo? All these questions and more will be answered on this week's episode of Single File.    Your participation matters. Please don't forget to rate this song at singlefilepod.com!!! "Graceland," "America," "You Can Call Me Al," "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover," "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard," "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"—Paul Simon’s list of classic songs is long and literary. So any week is the perfect week for Pop Literacy to celebrate this rare master of songwriting, who completed his final tour in the fall and has an album out, In the Blue Light, filled with reimagined versions of some of his songs. A literary master is always revising.  Pop Literacy host Jennifer Keishin Armstrong is joined by guest hosts (and fellow Paul Simon nerds) Daniel Ford, author of Sid Sanford Lives!, co-founder of our Writer’s Bone Podcast Network, and our producer, and Spencer Wise, author of The Emperor of Shoes. We discuss which Paul Simon song we’d listen to if we could only choose one for the rest of our lives, the hits we’re a little sick of, the best deep cuts, the highlights from his final tour, and who might be able to fill his vital role as the poet of the midlife crisis in the future. To enhance your listening experience, we also made you two playlists: Paul Simon 101 to help you wade in and then go deeper, and Potential Future Paul Simons, featuring some mainstream pop picks with potential (Taylor Swift, John Mayer) as well as some indie gems (L.A. Salami, Father John Misty).

This week Michelle is back! This week we chat about how to leverage your mindset and relationships to create your own opportunities! Featured Music: Zealyn - "Enjoy Your Holiday" Paul Simon - "You Can Call Me Al"   Thoughts, Inspirations, Opinions, What We've Been Up To Michelle Went to New York and got to see Jimmy Fallon Brandi Got a haircut!!! (finally) Had a garage sale Found two new podcasts: The Bright Sessions Wolverine: The Long Night About Creating Your Own Opportunities Try to look forward and see where you want to be and reverse engineer from where you want to be backwards to figure out what kinds of opportunities you'd need to get there. Just put yourself out there! You have to create space for yourself to create opportunities. Investing in other people will never be a bad investment "Networking" should be less about selling yourself and more about connecting and having relationships It's actually not only who you know though, it is also about what you know too Don't just connect with people for what they can do for you. Create relationships and then look for natural openings for opportunities through those people instead Relationships are always worth it. When you get out there-there will be more opportunities for more opportunities ;) Creating opportunities starts with your mindset. Your inner monologue matters because it shapes your attitude towards potential opportunities. MINDSET + CONNECTIONS (RELATIONSHIPS) = OPPORTUNITIES    THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK "Hi Brandi!! I just wanted to tell you that I somehow waltzed onto your podcast with Michelle and I have been listening to it nonstop. Even though it's not how I kinda post, I learn a lot from it. I never listened to podcasts before or share it with my friends, but I did that today cause I think it's worth it. Anyway, just wanted to tell you that and I hope you have a wonderful day!" - @_Reeru on Instagram     Find us on all forms of social media via @BrandiSea on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and you can email us any burning questions you want Brandi to answer on an episode at brandi@brandisea.com.   THANK YOU to the ultra-talented  Vesperteen (Colin Rigsby) for letting us use his (“Shatter in The Night”) track in every episode of Design Speaks.
