*The music in this video is copyrighted and all rights reserved to the respective copyright holders* Brad Zerbo and Jaytriot take us on a nostalgic ride through the land of One Hit Wonders in Part 1 of this two-part special. From the synth-pop sparkle of Kajagoogoo's “Too Shy” to the undeniable groove of “Baby Got Back” and “Groove Is in the Heart,” the duo covers a wide span of musical oddities and 80s/90s earworms that dominated the charts, once. Along the way, they share personal concert stories, music trivia, and unexpected facts (like Aldo Nova's post-hit career or the true story behind “My Sharona”). With riffs, impressions, and a whole lot of heart, this episode blends music history with hilarious anecdotes, making it a perfect kickoff for the weekend. Whether you're a diehard rocker or an undercover lover of cheesy pop hits, this episode is pure degroovy fun.

Next up is an intriguing chat with one half of the Was Brothers (Was (not Was)) (too many brackets), the eternally interesting Mr David Weiss. We spoke for a looong time so this will end up in three parts (still lost a couple of hours of tangents in the process).Part 1 will cover the early years of Was (not Was) including their debut LP as well as plenty of talk of Walk The Dinosaur as well as diversions involving interactions with the likes of Bob Dylan, George Michael and Bruce Springsteen. The hours flew by. I hope they do for you too. 1. WHEEL ME OUT (1980)David and childhood buddy Don decide to make some music after their mate Doug hits major success with his band, The Knack and My Sharona (my-y-y-woo!).They make a funky weird track (involving David's mum) that leads to some underground success...2. WAS (NOT WAS)...Thanks to which, the first LP follows, with such gems as Out Come The Freaks and Where Did Your Heart Go. We discuss the Wham! cover and which was the more profitable for David; this or that dinosaur song.Every track from the album is covered. My original intention for all albums but David's diversions put paid to that (couldn't afford to go for a tenth hour of chat).EITHER/ORMadonna or Cyndi Lauper?Born in the USA or Purple Rain?Vinyl or CD?etc, etc...David is available on Facebook as David WasFor messages of support or to keep the podcast from grinding to a stop via PayPal;80sography@gmail.com I Accept All Lies x Send us a text

IT'S THE FINAL EPISODE OF 2024! Join Planet LP host Ted Asregadoo and Popdose's Keith Creighton as they wrap up an incredible year of music! In this jam-packed episode, Ted and Keith dive into their favorite songs and albums of 2024—not with a ranked list, but with thematic categories that make for a thoughtful and entertaining retrospective. In the first segment, Keith and Ted talk about bigger music trends like: -- The deluge of streaming content. -- The impact of AI on music creation -- and how Spotify reaps the profits from these non-human-created songs. -- The importance of human creativity in cultural expressions like music. Breakthroughs and Debuts Keith talks up the music by and film about Kneecap -- a hip-hop trio whose raps are entirely in Galic. Their current album Fine Art is available now. Fat Dog also tops Keith's breakthroughs and debuts this year. If you're into the early Ministry and that whole industrial genre, you'll love Woof by Fat Dog. Finally, The Waeve, a UK duo featuring singer-songwriters Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall. Keith said that if he did rank his albums this year, City Lights by The Waeve would top his list. Ted's Single Play picks are: "The Flood" by Allie Sandt. If you're a fan of Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, Paul Simon, or Madison Cunningham, Allie's music is a must-listen. With songwriting that reflects the depth and wisdom of an old soul, Allie weaves timeless influences into a sound that's uniquely her own. Her heartfelt lyrics and melodic craftsmanship show incredible promise, and Ted is rooting for her career to take off— because she truly deserves it. The second song is As For The Future's track "The Mob" -- a sly, samba-infused commentary on populism that's as counter-cultural as it is catchy. If you're a fan of Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66 or were hooked on Swing Out Sister back in 1987, this song will strike a chord. With its smooth grooves and clever lyrics, "The Mob" blends nostalgia with a fresh, modern edge—proof that As For The Future knows how to make a bold musical statement. Another UK Invasion The Last Dinner Party is a UK band that formed during COVID-19. Surprisingly, before they had a single out, they opened for The Rolling Stones. The Last Dinner Party is what Keith called a total "buzz band" that entertained the public and press with their live shows, fashion, and visual style. Their album, Prelude To Ecstasy did deliver the goods -- as it were -- and lived up to its hype. Irish shoegaze band NewDad, which Keith describes as "very sweet, tender, dark, shoegazing music," reminds him of Lush -- which made him spin the album many times since its release. And while Brigitte Calls Me Baby are not from the UK (they are from Chicago), Keith connected with their music because their style reminds him of The Smiths crossed with Elvis Presley. Their debut album is The Future Is Our Way Out. Ted's sort of Single Play picks for this segment are: A Planet LP favorite! Ward White's "Continuity" is a masterclass in wit, quirky storytelling, and exceptional musicianship. The opening line is irresistibly catchy—it sneaks into your head and stays there, a sure sign the song is working its magic. Ward's sharp sense of humor shines throughout, making "Continuity" both clever and captivating. It's a standout track that showcases his unique charm and talent. Though Ward is not from the UK, he sure sounds like he could be -- kind of like the band Brigitte Calls Me Baby. It Leads to This by The Pineapple Thief has been Ted's most-listened-to album of 2024—and for good reason. He was hooked after seeing them live in San Francisco on December 9th. While he admits to unfamiliarity with their older work, It Leads to This completely won him over. It balances heavy guitar riffs with a meditative, Pink Floyd-like, immersive, and introspective vibe. It might not be for everyone, but if atmospheric, thoughtful rock is your thing, It Leads to This is absolutely worth a listen. New Power Pop When it comes to power pop, think The Knack's "My Sharona," or Rick Springfield, and Cheap Trick. But what's when it comes to power pop in 2024 sometimes what's old is new again. Keith recommends a band that opened for The Beatles during the final tour and shared the same manager. That band is The Cyrkle -- whose unusual spelling was suggested by John Lennon. Their 2024 release on Big Stir Records is called Revival, and it's among Keith's most-played albums this year. Fun fact: Band member Tom Dawes (alas, he died in 2007) was a successful jingle writer after The Cyrkle disbanded. He wrote "Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz" for Alka-Seltzer, which ran in their ads from 1975-1980. Another power pop gem is The Half-Cubes, whose album Pop Treasures is a carefully curated album of cover songs that mine some tracks from 10cc, OMD, Del Amitri, and Trashcan Sinatras. Ted's Single Play picks are: Kula Shaker's "Indian Record Player" is a catchy pop anthem that seamlessly blends Western pop music sensibilities with a nostalgic nod to the golden age of Bollywood in the lyrics. Check out their latest release, Natural Magick. Galantis, David Guetta, and 5 Seconds of Summer team up for "Lighter," a feel-good anthem that's pure pop perfection. Clocking in at just 2:52, the song is packed with infectious hooks and an upbeat vibe that'll have you dancing from start to finish. It doesn't overstay its welcome or try to be overly complicated—it's simply a joyful, high-energy track with a great beat that's impossible to resist. Sometimes, all you need is a song like this to brighten your day and get you moving. Best Comebacks Keith's first comeback record is from The Libertines, All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade -- which is an astonishing comeback considering the substance abuse problems of some of the band members, like vocalist and guitarist Pete Doherty. Check out the single "Run, Run, Run" which excels at presenting what a good pub band sounds like when they are sober. Guess who's back? The Zutons! Best known for writing Amy Winehouse's most famous cover song ("Valarie"), their latest album The Big Decider is such a strong album from a band that was on hiatus for years that most folks probably thought they broke up for good. Nope. Ted's picks center on bigger names like The Cure's Songs Of A Lost World. While the album is light on hooks, it's pretty heavy on misery, which, considering Robert Smith world view is not a surprise. While The Cure's music is not for everyone, those who loved their 1989 release Disintegration will find The Cure's latest album a very familiar experience. Pearl Jam knocked it out of the park with Dark Matter. The title track and the song "Won't Tell" are two that stood out in this incredibly strong collection of songs. Keith notes that a good amount of credit goes to producer Andrews Watt, who has a knack for bringing out the best in older acts like Pearl Jam, The Rolling Stones, Ozzy, and the like. Single Play highlights not related to comebacks: Paper Citizen's "Car Stereo"-- a song dedicated to the importance of friendship in one's life and right up there in Ted's top singles of 2024. Linkin Park's "The Emptiness Machine" is a welcome return to form. Now that they have a new singer, it has brought to the forefront a very 20-something energy that recalls Paramore back in the day. Music Royals While the boys like Kendrick Lamar and Drake dissed each other in 2024, the girls like Charlie XCX (brat), Ariana Grande (Eternal Sunshine and Wicked), Sabrina Carpenter (Short n' Sweet), Dua Lipa (Radical Optimism), and Chappell Roan where all about community and supporting each other's music and careers. And finally, as the Eras Tour came to a close, Taylor Swift showed what spreading the wealth means. She's now a billionaire, but she gave back to her employees with $100,000 bonuses after the tour ended. Now, as the year is winding down, Keith said he's going to spend a lot of time with Swift's The Tortured Poets Department, while Ted is going to spend more time looking for rock bands with whom he is unfamiliar -- you know, if we're being grammatically correct here.

We covered the big commercial hit album "Brothers In Arms" back in episode 154, but many afficianados of Dire Straits consider their finest work to be the album that preceeded this one. Love Over Gold is their fourth studio album, released in late September 1982 and on the charts in June 1983. For this album, prime mover and lead vocalist Mark Knopfler, bassist John Illsley, and percussionist Pick Withers are joined by new members Hal Lindes on guitars and Alan Clark on keyboards. The songs on this album are longer than your standard single, particularly the majestic 14-minute "Telegraph Road." Despite their length, "Private Investigations" was released as a single in the UK and reached number 2on the charts. The shortest song, "Industrial Disease" (still clocking in at 5:50) was released as a single in the US. It would reach number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100, but would be a staple of rock radio stations at the time.A number of songs were written and recorded during the "Love Over Gold" sessions, but subsequently discarded from album release. Amongst these was the song "Private Dancer," which was instead provided to Tina Turner for her comeback album of the same name. Turner would take this song to number 7 on the US charts, and see her career reinvigorated by the success of her "Private Dancer" album."Love Over Gold" was a number 1 album on a number of charts, including Australia, Austria, and the UK, and reached number 19 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart.Rob brings us this outstanding, deep, and thought-provoking album for this week's podcast.Telegraph RoadThis lengthy masterpiece was inspired while Knopfler was riding in his tour bus down the 70-mile road of the same name. The song narrarates the development and history along the road as the decades roll past. It is easy to describe this song as prog rock, but it also contains one of the best guitar solo riffs you will hear. Industrial DiseaseGoodness me, goodness me! We have to highlight the US single from the album. The title comes from a term for work-related illness, and the term in this song references both individual work illness and the decline of British industry in general. The reference to Dr. Parkinson is a British professor and satirist who is famous for the phrase "work expands to fill the time available for its completion." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Overture to the Marriage of Figaro by Mozart (from the motion picture “Trading Places”)Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd star in this comedy about a yuppie and a homeless man who are forced to trade places as the result of a bet by two rich stock brokers. STAFF PICKS:Murder By Numbers by The PoliceBruce initiates the staff picks with a dark song about becoming a serial killer. This Police song appears on the cassette and CD version of the album "Synchronicity," but was left off the vinyl due to lack of space. It was written by Sting and Andy Summers, the only collaborative song on the album, and was recorded in a single take. Rock of Ages by Def LeppardLynch brings us a huge song from Def Leppard's "Pyromania" album. Producer Mutt Lange counts off the nonsensical "Gunter Glieben Glauten Globen," to open the song, and the lyrics form an anthem suitable for arena show openers. Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was an inspiration to the creation of this anthem.Don't Pay the Ferryman by Chris deBurghWayne's staff pick takes a fantasy approach to the story of Charon and the crossing of the river Styx, advising not to pay until the trip is done. Irish artist Chris deBurgh broke into the US top 40 with this song, peaking at number 34. Lines from Shakespeare's play "The Tempest" can be heard in the bridge to the song. The Walls came Down by The Call Rob finishes the staff picks with a song that is inspired by the Biblical tale of the fall of Jericho. Lead singer Michael Been would pull biblical references into his lyrics, including this song. The Call formed in 1980 in California, and blended rock, New Wave, and post-Punk. U2 and Simple Minds both consider The Call an influence in their music. COMEDY TRACK:My Bologna by "Weird Al" YankovicWe close out with Weird Al's meaty take on "My Sharona by" the Knack. "My Sharona"... "Funkytown"... "Achy Breaky Heart" We all know what a "one-hit wonder" song is but the Bible has some "one-hit wonders" as well. Five, to be exact. There are five books in the Bible that consist of only one chapter. But they are still so good, so important, so full of significance, that even that single chapter of writing was given a title and included among the Bible's 66 books. This is the kind of series where you can prepare for Sunday by reading an entire book of the Bible in about 3 minutes. We are starting with Obadiah

Tonight's the night for our one year anniversary show. It's a family affair as we welcome and are reunited with our special guests Nathan Beaudry and John Mottola from The Deep Purple Podcast. My sweet lord, as green as the way we were when we first began, I can see clearly now how we've been stayin' alive for 52 episodes. We won't be going as far back as December 1963, but we will be looking at the Billboard top 50 Songs from the 1970s, as broadcast on the AT40 Episode from January 5, 1980. Although there are quite a few foreign acts in this countdown, for the most part it is a big slice of American pie. We'll be talking about a few bad girls we knew, like Maggie May from Britain who was three times a lady, and my Sharona, who was a true blue American woman. There may be a few silly love songs, and perhaps a stinker, but one bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch. Helena is 39 years old and manages institutional policy, and compliance training, at SUNY FIT. She enjoys cooking...and eating (a favorite activity that creates, and helps recall, the best memories). She paints, and is also an avid reader and writer, but still enjoys a good TV binge. A seasoned rider since childhood, on nice days you may also find Helena outside on horseback. Her three-syllable name also seamlessly replaces ‘Sharona's' in the 1979 Knack hit, “My Sharona.” Go ahead, sing it, she dares you. Rheumatoid Disease, Fibromyalgia, Asthma, Adenomyosis, and a rare but threatening kidney disorder present a host of physical and mental challenges for her daily life and work. She has been battling chronic illnesses since her teens which render her immunocompromised, in pain, fatigued, and has fought her way back from an almost terminal medical crisis. Helena has learned to strike delicate balances in order to live with her illnesses: listening to her body, but not allowing it to rule her life; grieving her body but allowing herself to celebrate the things it can still do (she's very active, and works out five days a week, when possible); not complaining but making sure to educate people on the very real struggles she and people like her face. She's been dedicating her time advocating for those who struggle with chronic illness by starting a diversity and inclusion initiative at work to call specific attention to the 1 in 4 Americans who struggle with a disability and what that means for ableism and an office environment. She's also working with her partner to raise money for a local chapter of the Fibromyalgia Care Society of America, an organization that helps people (and their communities) manage their lifestyles with Fibromyalgia. In October 2022, the TKO Strong Foundation honored her with the TKO Strong Award which is intended to recognize the strength of those who overcome obstacles in the face of adversity and who, through compassion, clarity, insights, and contributions, inspire others to have the courage, dignity, and faith to look past the diagnosis and live life to the fullest. Helena is an avid public speaker, having presented workshops at the state, regional, and national levels, and sometimes takes her show on the road for more intimate workshops in the professional environment. Her sessions and workshops focus on the relationships between personal and professional growth, and have been informed by trends she's noticed throughout her professional career. They aim to help people sharpen their self-awareness, and realize how certain patterns can not only affect them on a personal level, but also professionally as team members or leaders. By using biology and psychology to gain a better understanding of why we think the way we do, Helena identifies patterns in our behavior that are innate but yet do not serve us well – and then she aims to help break them. Helena enjoys utilizing an interactive approach to help question the ‘norms' we already think we believe, and then reshapes them to align more closely with what we actually need in order to be more effective, happier, satisfied, people and employees. Her sessions become unifying and liberating as attendees realize we all have the same “abnormal” thoughts together, and come to understand there is hope for change. Remember when you were lovin', touchin', squeezin', thinking you were the boss, in the driver's seat and getting ready for the main event. Then she pushed you away and told you were nothing but a dirty white boy and good girls don't. You responded by saying, please don't go, don't bring me down, and why do you lead me on? Ain't that a shame. Those were good times, but after the love has gone, you were just left with the sad eyes of a lonesome loser. This week we sail on through the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending September 28, 1979. It's not really spooky that it is full of pop music, and don't stop until you get enough. Bob was surprised I listened to their Podcast., :) And Miles said it was the worst blind date he's ever been on, having started with calling me, Jennifer. What will he call me next? MY SHARONA? And who the fuck IS Jennifer??Twenty-two years together on College radio years ago. Then one day Bob decided to start a Podcast and got ahold of Miles, who thought he would never hear from him again. We all do, and so do Bob and Miles. Their high school escapades, almost dates, and encounters with a certain married woman called Valerie are all on the table in this episode. We also explore their love for music legends like Pete Townsend, The Doors, and Material Issue, and how these have shaped not only their personal lives but also their podcast. But it's not all about the past. We delve into their current pet peeves, hilarious experiences, and missed opportunities, like the time they barely missed out on bowling with They Might Be Giants! We also touch on their experiences with Icelandic culture, the struggles they face sourcing guests for Static Radio, and their thoughts on music, bars, and social media. On this day in 1979, the biggest song of that year reached Gold certification in America! My Sharona made the Knack one of the most talked about bands in the world, but... the group were never able to capitalise on its success. On this episode you'll hear from Prescott Niles, the man who played the iconic bass line on that song, talk about some of the reasons the group never kicked on.To hear the full interview with Prescott Niles please check out Episode 55 of Vintage Rock Pod!

It's the tail end of the 70s, and top 40 music is heavily leaning to disco and AOR. Sure there's plenty of other things out there, but the charts point not only to disco artists, but pop singers jumping on board the disco train (Barbara Streisand, Kiss, Paul McCartney and Wings). Then 4 guys based in Los Angeles recorded and mixed a powerful rock and roll album in a little over 10 days, and for a brief time, the world couldn't get enough of them.Welcome to episode 157 of Love That Album. It seemed that you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing that flammed drum beat that held together a song as lustful as anything in rock music, My Sharona. Doug Fieger, Berton Averre, Prescott Niles and Bruce Gary released their debut album Get The Knack and music fans went crazy. Of course, things turned sour with fickle fans and the media who had to take these guys down a peg or two. That's not the story (in the main) that this episode is about.I am hugely privileged to have Knack bassist Prescott Niles join me to talk about the 6 albums the band released over their career, putting paid to the lie that My Sharona is all they accomplished....but this episode is about more than just The Knack. Prescott talks about his music life starting in Brooklyn, and his time working with musicians like Velvet Turner, Arthur Lee, and George Harrison. He also talks about Fillmore East and Woodstock, and tells some interesting tales about Jimi Hendrix, and a few others. This is a mammoth conversation we recorded over two sessions (one wasn't enough to get all these stories out). This week, one of America's greatest living composers, Jimmy Webb, the writer of such classics as “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Galveston,” “Macarthur Park,” and “Wichita Lineman,” talks about another of his iconic songs, “Highwayman.” Willie, of course, recorded it with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson in 1985, and it went on to win that year's Grammy for best country song, as well as give country's first supergroup their name. From there, Jimmy touches on reincarnation, the way Glen Campbell got the song to Willie, et al.—with a weird assist from the Knack and “My Sharona”—and a great idea for Willie's next album.

While they may hail from Jacksonville, Florida, the southern rock group Blackfoot gets its name from the Native American tribe in recognition of the Native American heritage of multiple members of the band. Strikes was their third studio album, and would go Platinum. Blackfoot is Rickey Medlocke on lead vocals and guitar, Charlie Hargrett on guitar, Greg T. Walker on bass, keyboards, and vocals, and Jakson Spires on percussion and vocals. Rickey Medlocke was an early member of Lynyrd Skynyrd where he played drums and contributed vocals. After touring as the backing band for Ruby Starr, Blackfoot met Al Nalli who was manager for the group Brownsville Station, and he got them a contract with Atco Records. Nalli also produced Blackfoot Strikes, which would be the groups most commercially successful album. Blackfoot would see many lineup changes over the years, with over 40 musicians being listed as former members of the band. Blackfoot continues to tour today, and released a new studio album in 2016. Although no original band members are with the band today, Rickey Medlocke occasionally joins the band during concerts. Train, Train (Prelude)This short harmonica instrumental features Rickey Medlocke's grandfather, Shorty Medlocke, who was a bluegrass artist and composer of the pieceTrain, TrainThe biggest hit of the group was written by Shorty Medlocke, Rickey's grandfather, and peaked at number 38 on the charts. It was originally a delta blues song, and was the last song that was recorded for the album.
