Making the leap from pediatric to adult healthcare can be overwhelming. In this episode, I discuss what to expect, how to prepare, and how to support and advocate for your special needs' teen through this transition. Please note: How transition care is handled can depend on the country you live in, the health care system of said country, but also insurance. I am based in the Netherlands so therefore some of the tips I share are based on living here. It might be therefore different for you. However, a lot of the tips I think are applicable to everybody no matter where you are in the world.Stay sane & stay happy mom.Nadine ps. Special Needs and the Christmas season. Recipe for overwhelm and meltdowns. That's why in this episode I share my favorite grounding exercise to stop the overwhelm and find my inner calm.  Even when you're in a crowded supermarket or at a big family gathering. Plus an extra exercise using the 5 senses that can also help snap out of the overwhelm. If your kid needs a little help to snap out of the overwhelm, this one is great to do together! And at the end I've got a few tips to help your kid at Christmas celebrations (or any family gathering for that matter).I think I came across the snow globe exercise a couple of years ago in my favorite Christmas book: Calm Christmas and a Happy New Year by Beth Kempton. But upon rereading it I found out I gave it a little twist. Beth does the lovely Calm Christmas podcast series as well in the weeks before Christmas. It's my favorite podcast in the winter season to relax, calm down and savour the things that truly matter. I can't recommend it enough!Stay sane

But this year really took the cake.  So, I took out an old tool once taught to wonderboy, which helped me see when it's time to recharge and how long I really need. On hectic times it is also so easy to forget to invest in couple time. Last week we unexpectedly had an evening without kiddo's – and it was so nice… It was a good reminder to take more quality time together, and not wait until there are no kids around. Last tip is how to make a fun summer break for everyone. Especially when you have a kiddo that needs time to adjust. *Hope you have a great summer!        Stay sane

And what your kid truly needs. *Follow your heart. Remember it's not about a fully decorated house, a gazillion presents, a full agenda, and kids who are able to sit through a 5 course meal. Yay! It's my one year ADHD anniversary!!!!Why I celebrate this? And why I think you should celebrate getting a diagnose or label?Because it helps you move forward, understand and accept yourself or your kid, and find the help you or your kid need.Did my diagnose, meds or therapy change me? I still don't finish sentences. Still happily dive into rabbit holes. Am still a very creative person with all.the.ideas. But giiiirl, the diagnose, meds and therapy have been a game changer. I was totally happy with who I was, went to college, never a problem with keeping a job, starting my own biz, doing a gazzillion things.  My mind though was never quiet. And it often wasn't really nice to me.That all changed with my diagnose, the following research, meds and therapy. Am still me. But the diagnose and research gave so much clarity about why I do things a certain way and struggle with seemingly simple things. A diagnose is not an excuse. But it is a reason. Signs and symptoms of special needs children: real issue or talked into?

In this episode of the Special Needs Supermom Podcast I talk about signs and symptoms of special needs children: real issue or talked into? *When you're autistic you're anti-social; when there's a smog weather alarm you have to stay inside when asthmatic; all kids taking MTX-injections get ‘allergic' to the color yellow, the smell of fresh cut grass is enough to trigger an asthmatic allergy attack. Or is it because society keeps telling us this?  *Wonderboy is the most social sensitive kid out there, hence why people always question him being autistic. Yet he nowadays calls himself socially awkward. Supergirl never thought much about the yellow color of her juvenile arthritis injectable medicine until she heard other kids talk about being ‘allergic' to the color yellow because of this med. She has a yellow wall in her bedroom… And for years I would start to breath difficulty the moment I smelled mowed grass. Until my breathing therapist asked if this was truly an allergic reaction or happened because I would tense up and breath shallow the moment I would smell it. *What raises the question: when it comes to signs and symptoms of our special needs children, but also our own, is it really true or talked into?  *Stay sane & stay happy.  Nadine  *Find and recharge your superpowers at: -        www.specialneedssupermompodcast.com -        IG: @specialneedssupermompodcast -        FB: www.facebook.com/specialneedssupermompodcast *Supermom tribe Looking for a private tribe just for fellow special needs moms to hang out, share stories, laugh, cry, get inspired, share tips and keep sane? Nor should it matter when you tried your best. Therefore, in this episode of the Special Needs Supermom Podcast I want to plead the case to celebrate your C-Grade kid just as much as you're A-Grade kid. That things won't come easy, that they might not be able to pursue their dream. Have to give up their favorite sport. If they even can. Now throw in chronic pain and fatigue, frustrations because your classmates and even your family doesn't get it. Oh and hello hormones. Yay. No, wonder teens with a chronic illness or brains wired differently have a higher chance to get a depression. As a parent it is the most awful experience to witness. Avoidable? No, not always. Yup, totally. In episode 51 of the Special Needs Supermom podcast I talk about how you could have an autistic kid and not even know. Why me and my hubby totally missed the signs with our special needs child.I mean Wonderboy is fun, social, loves to hug, looks you in the eye… no way he could be autistic right? We also had no problems at home. Let me repeat that: No problem at home. And with the movie Rain Man as our only reference to autism we thought his teacher was bonkers when she even dared to suggest this. So, how can you have an autistic kid without you realizing? 1. Forget about the movie Rain Man. For one autism comes in many forms and shapes. Like our Wonderboy they could be big huggers or behave in other ways that is not seen autistic. 2. Second, maybe your kid looks like you and therefore you know instinctively what your kid needs. Because you already have the systems in place for you. Like not much socializing in the weekend. A strict day-to-day routine.. 3. I tell you some signs we did not perceive as a problem but were, come to think of it, a good indication there was something going on.4. Some good news: we still to this day have very little problems at home. And that might be the case for you as well. Much has to do with how you handle the possible diagnosis. Hint: it has a lot to do with not seeing it as a problem (I know, that can be easier said than done).Little did we know back then. How much we have learned since. And how proud we are today. I hope this podcast gives you some insights but will also take the fear away of a possible diagnosis and your kid's future.Stay sane & stay happy.NadinePractical tips & tricks for daily life and how to stay sane as a Special Needs Supermom?- Check out www.specialneedssupermompodcast.com- IG: @specialneedssupermompodcast- FB: Special Needs SupermomLooking for a tribe with fellow special needs moms to share, laugh, get inspired, hope and practical tips for your special needs child and how to stay sane? Your kid holding its stuffed elephant means: I need help. It's not about the outfit. Have a kid who is really fussy about clothing material? Can only handle stressful days like this wearing his superman cape? Let him. Thanksgiving and Christmas are NOT about color coordinated clothes.Hugging is not mandatory - if your kid normally hates hugging, holidays are not going to change that. Again: already stressful enough. People need to respect his boundaries!Don't need to play along - Kid is normally not a group person? Why should that be any different with cousins? Make dinner fun - Have a kid that has a hard time sitting down for even 15 minutes? Then it's not going to quietly sit down at a boring dinner table for 2 hours… set a table for their stuffed animal, use color-in placemats, let them play. Explain - All of the above - Tell your family what your kid needs. How he or she ticks. Don't do it by phone, and no it is not open to discussion. Email them or send them a letter (maybe together with a book like '10 things my kid with autism wish you knew') explaining them what your kid need. Your family wants what's best for your kid as well. They want your kid to enjoy the holiday as much as they do. Just remind them that you are the expert on your kid.And remember: it is easier for 10 adults to adjust to 1 kid, than 1 special need kid accommodating to all those people…Your kid happy. You happy. And that's all that matters.Stay sane

My daily habitat as a special needs mom? My car. Always driving and picking up supergirl to school, doctors' appointments, friends and more. And it drained me. Another minimal 1.5 hours a day 'lost'. I was exhausted. Me-time? What was that? Needless to say, there was a serious special needs supermom burnout. I never relaxed. Even in the car I ‘had' to listen to the news, when I enjoyed a song but supergirl wanted her favorite channel I immediately obliged because anything to make her feel better right? Thankfully I learned to let go. And because of that I was able to turn these ‘lost' hours into little relaxing treasures just for me. And so can you!Stay sane and stay happy!NadinePs.
