For this “ABCs of NMOSD” episode titled, “Transitioning from Pediatric to Adult Care with NMOSD,” Dr. Jonathan Galli joined Krissy Dilger of SRNA. Dr. Galli provided insights into the disorder and its presentation across age groups, emphasizing the importance of aggressive treatment [00:01:35]. He highlighted differences in treatment approaches and medication availability between pediatric and adult populations [00:05:54]. The discussion also explored the transition process, including timelines, support systems, and considerations for patients and families, aiming to ensure a smooth shift in care [00:10:45]. Dr. Galli received his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, VT, and completed his neurology residency at The University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT, where he worked with Fellowship mentor, Dr. Clardy. As part of his fellowship training, he conducted research to look for biomarkers in individuals with NMOSD. The research investigated whether individuals have aquaporin¬-4 (AQP¬4) autoantibodies prior to their symptom onset of NMOSD, and also looked for other inflammatory biomarkers. He hopes the study will help us to understand how biomarkers occur over the course of the disorder, which will hopefully help identify predictors of disease development, and ultimately therapeutic targets.

The transition from adolescent to adult care can often be a series of challenging obstacles for patients, families, and providers. This time of adjustment can be both overwhelming and difficult, especially for patients with congenital health conditions. Moving from a parent supervised visit to an independent patient model takes time and often takes a lot of discussion. In this episode, we are going unpack and inform primary care providers on how they can play a pivotal role in the transition of care. Dr. Daniel Wood is the newest addition to our Urology department here at Children's Hospital Colorado. Resources: Twitter for pediatric healthcare professionals.

For most parents, helping their child who has a chronic digestive health condition, like Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), transition from pediatric to adult health care is a big step. In this episode, Pediatric Gastroenterologist Dr. Amanda Muir and Gastroenterologist Dr. Kristle Lee Lynch, highlight the process and offer guidance for pediatric EoE patients (and their parents) on what to expect as they transition to adult GI care. Both doctors offer tips and insight for parents and young EoE patients to help make this handoff more manageable, including what happens to the parents' role during and after their child's transition to adult care and how to prepare young adult EoE patients for managing their own health care.
The nation's population of older adults is increasing, but the system of emergency medicine isn't optimally designed for their specific, complex and multi-layered needs. So what can the field do to better adapt to an aging population? Medical support frameworks for older adults remain inadequate, particularly in the emergency department. In today's discussion about older adult care in the ED, Marie Cleary-Fishman, AHA's vice president of clinical quality, is joined by Dr. Kevin Biese. Dr. Biese serves as the University of North Carolina Hospitals Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, as well as its Co-Director of the Division of Geriatric Emergency Medicine.
This week we invited Dr. Stacy Ardoin, pediatric and adult rheumatologist, to discuss all the challenges of ushering children into adult care and (more importantly) how to facilitate the transition. Dr. Ardoin led the American College of Rheumatology's participation in the American College of Physicians Pediatric to Adult Care Transition Toolkit Project and has published several research studies and reviews on the topic. Today, she offers her advice, processes at her own practice, and resources for both patient and parents to help your pediatric patient successfully navigate this critical period in their care.
