True Crime & Philosophy 3: Courtney Clenney & the Tyrannical Soul

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 27, 2025 47:52

In this episode of the True Crime & Philosophy series of The Philosophemes Podcast, we examine the tragic case of Courtney Clenney through the lens of Aristotle's virtue ethics. What does it mean to have a tyrannical soul? And how might ancient philosophy help us understand the development of character in the context of modern violence? Courtney “Tailor” Clenney, an Instagram and OnlyFans model with over two million followers, has been charged with second-degree murder for stabbing her boyfriend, Christian “Toby” Obumseli, to death in their luxury apartment in Miami's Edgewater neighborhood on April 3, 2022. Clenney claims she acted in self-defense during yet another intense argument in what she describes as a “violent and toxic” relationship. While avoiding any claims of guilt or innocence, this episode considers the moral and psychological dimensions of Clenney's behavior—both alleged and documented. Drawing on Aristotle's account of virtue, vice, and character formation, we explore how a soul can become disordered, and what that means for ethical responsibility. We also reflect on Clenney's publicly reported diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder, considering how impulsivity and emotional volatility complicate questions of agency and moral evaluation. This is not just a story about crime—it's a study of character. And, it's a glimpse into the dangerous ideas brought into focus by forensic philosophy. . The Philosophemes Podcast. Deep roots. In this episode we discuss the philosophy involved in the True Crime case of Luigi Mangione and United Healthcare CEO, Brian Thompson. A number of the documentaries regarding this case raise interesting philosophical questions without engaging in a philosophical discussion of the questions. 20/20 and TMZ, for example, ask questions regarding justice, violence, and social sentiment regarding corporations without attempting to provide a coherent philosophical account of the Mangione case. In this episode, we examine the Mangione case through arguably the most famous philosophical account of natural justice, put forth by Thomas Hobbes in his work Leviathan. Hobbes' discussion of natural justice shines an interesting and provocative light on the case of Luigi Mangione. . Please post your questions or comments on The Philosophemes YouTube Channel. In this episode we discuss the relation between Nihilism and Absurdism. It's not surprising that Absurdism is so popular in Postmodernity. However, I haven't found anyone on the information superhighway - including Wikipedia - who has correctly characterized Absurdism yet. By the end of this episode we'll see that Absurdism is performative. That is to say, Absurdism is performative Nihilism. Nihilism believes it gets reality right. Absurdism believes there is no such thing as "getting reality right." Performative Absurdism doesn't relate to reality with a meaning-making that seeks to be reality-based. The Correct Context for Understanding Kant's Relation to the Age of Reason & What Would Heidegger Say to Bishop Barron?

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 3, 2024 44:27

In this episode we explore the correct context for understanding Kant's relation to the historical period known as “the Enlightenment” or “the Age of Reason.” On the one hand, Kant's Critique of Pure Reason may be understood as “critiquing reason to make room for faith.” On the other hand, the Method of Kant's Transcendental Philosophy reveals Spirit as the condition for the possibility of the unity of Mind and Body. We'll understand these insights by discussing what has been called “the Homeric Contest” to complete Kant's “System of Transcendental Philosophy.” The contest refers to the competition that may be witnessed in the writings of Fichte, Novalis, Hölderlin, Schelling, Schopenhauer, and Hegel. Understanding this historical contextualization of Kant's philosophy makes it much easier to see that contemporary Postmodern criticisms of Kant's philosophy are not actually criticisms of Kant's philosophy. Rather, they are criticisms of Descartes' philosophy. Thus, Kant's philosophy is not the problem; Kant's philosophy is the solution to the problem(s) with Descartes' philosophy. . Join me in this episode, where we discuss one of the most important ideas in the history of philosophy: Apperception. The term was invented by Leibniz to characterize Locke's criticism of Descartes, and the term reaches its apex in the thinking of Immanuel Kant. Thinking through the philosophical puzzle of apperception is helpful for clarifying one's metaphysics/ontology, in general, and one's philosophical psychology, in particular. . In this Episode, we discuss the evolution of the concept of space from 1640 to 1790, listening in as these philosophers - Descartes, Locke, Leibniz, Hume, and Kant - critique and develop philosophical theories of space. Albert Einstein himself praised Immanuel Kant for the "Kantian Copernican Revolution" that opened the door for quantum thinking. . Linktree: https://linktr.ee/philosophemes . If we can recognize "hinge points" - paradigmatic differences - between philosophies (for example, regarding their ontologies or soteriologies), it makes philosophizing about them much easier. This episode considers the difference between Existentialism and Stoicism, specifically regarding Amor Fati. I believe Nietzsche deserves the credit for the idea of Amor Fati. This episode gives my reasons why. As always, please post questions or comments on any video on YouTube, and I'm happy to engage you in conversation. Thank you for being here! What Is Existentialism?

In this Episode, we provide an abbreviated answer to the question: What is Existentialism? The majority of this episode is a paraphrase of my two-volume set titled, What Is Existentialism? Most people make the mistake of thinking that Sartre's philosophy is the answer to the question: What is Existentialism? But Sartre's philosophy represents only one variety of Existentialism. Famously Heidegger disagreed with Sartre, even though Sartre's book Being & Nothingness was heavily influenced by Heidegger's Being & Time. Of course, any answer to the question "What is Existentialism?" would also need to take, at least, the philosophies of Kierkegaard and Nietzsche into account. Since the 1940s scholars (including those found in the Cambridge Companion to Existentialism) have said there is no such thing as "Existentialism." After hearing this episode, you should have a pretty good idea why they're wrong. . Linktree: https://linktr.ee/philosophemes . Patreon https://www.patreon.com/Frank_Scalambrino_PhD . Join me in this episode for a discussion of one of Nietzsche's most celebrated ideas: Amor Fati. This episode directly responds to the previous two episodes regarding Nietzsche's idea of the Eternal Return. For Nietzsche, Amor Fati represents the "eternal confirmation and seal" of what he describes throughout his writings - especially in Twilight of the Idols, Ecce Homo, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and the Birth of Tragedy - as an apotheosis into the "Dionysian Worldview." . Ever wonder where the idea of "platonic love" comes from? In this Episode, we discuss the celebrated passage from Plato's dialogue the Symposium known as "the ladder of love" or the scala amoris. In the passage, Plato describes a drinking party, where the guests take turns giving praise for love, or more specifically, "the god of love." In the middle of the dialogue, it is Socrates' turn to give his praising account of love, and, in doing so, Socrates recounts his discussion with the (oracle-like) prophetess Diotima; a discussion that tells the story of the scala amoris, the ladder of love.
