Tom joins us to discuss his book Speaking Philosophically: Communication at the Limits of Discursive Reason (Bloomsbury, 2023). Western philosophy has often claimed for itself not just a distinct sphere of knowledge, but a distinct form of communication, set against ordinary speech. For some philosophers, authentic philosophizing demands a specific manner of speaking or writing, adoption of which enables one to gesture toward truths that propositional speech will never grasp. Drawing on a variety of thinkers – Heraclitus, Plato, Kant, Fichte, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Weil, Foucault, and Irigaray – Sutherland argues this emphasis on the form of philosophical communication can function as an exclusionary mechanism, determining who is deemed capable of speaking philosophically. We discuss Plato, Nietzsche, Weil, Laruelle and applied philosophy in Hadot. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of Chasing Leviathan, PJ and Dr. Christopher Yeomans discuss his book, The Politics of German Idealism, focusing on the philosophical underpinnings of Hegel, Fichte, and Kant. Together they explore the estate structure in Hegel's philosophy, the impact of the French Revolution, and the evolution of social classes in Germany during a time of significant transition. Yeomans emphasizes the importance of understanding the historical context of these ideas, particularly in relation to urbanization, social mobility, and the role of status in society. The conversation concludes with reflections on modern citizenship and the relevance of pluralism in contemporary political discourse.Make sure to check out Dr. Yeomans' book: The Politics of German Idealism

KapitolyI. My, noví nihilisté [začátek až 6:40]II. Gestaltung: Doris Obrecht

In this episode, Ben Watkins sits down to discuss the Van Tillian tradition of presuppositional apologetics often found online along with objective idealism— an epistemological view often associated with Post-Kantians like Hegel, Fichte, and Schelling. Two claims of Van Til are challenged using the resources of objective idealism: Those two claims are (i) Christianity is a necessary condition to know anything at all and (ii) the Christian and the non-Christian have no neutral ground to resolve their disagreements. In addition to challenging these claims by appeal to a form of objective idealism, Ben also gives a brief exposition of the argument from divine hiddenness. Contrary to Van Til and other presuppositional apologetics, it is not the case everyone believes God exists. In fact, there are some people who do not believe God exists, and this fact is evidence for atheism over theism.
Immanuel Kant was popular at his death. The whole town emptied out to see him. His last words were "it is good". But was his philosophy any good? In order to find out, we dive into Chapter 7 of Conjectures and Refutations: Kant's Critique and Cosmology, where Popper rescues Kant's reputation from the clutches of the dastardly German Idealists. We discuss Deontology vs consquentialism vs virtue ethics Kant's Categorical Imperative Kant's contributions to cosmology and politics Kant as a defender of the enlightenment Romanticism vs (German) idealism vs critical rationalism Kant's cosmology and cosmogony Kant's antimony and his proofs that the universe is both finite and infinite in time Kant's Copernican revolution and transcendental idealism Kant's morality Why Popper admired Kant so much, and why he compares him to Socrates Quotes Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one's understanding without guidance from another. This immaturity is self-imposed when its cause lies not in lack of understanding, but in lack of resolve and courage to use it without guidance from another. Sapere Aude! "Have courage to use your own understanding!" --that is the motto of enlightenment. - An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment? (Translated by Ted Humphrey, Hackett Publishing, 1992) (Alternate translation from Popper: Enlightenment is the emancipation of man from a state of self-imposed tutelage . . . of incapacity to use his own intelligence without external guidance. Such a state of tutelage I call ‘self-imposed' if it is due, not to lack of intelligence, but to lack of courage or determination to use one's own intelligence without the help of a leader. Sapere aude! Dare to use your own intelligence! This is the battle-cry of the Enlightenment.) - C&R, Chap 6 What lesson did Kant draw from these bewildering antinomies? He concluded that our ideas of space and time are inapplicable to the universe as a whole. We can, of course, apply the ideas of space and time to ordinary physical things and physical events. But space and time themselves are neither things nor events: they cannot even be observed: they are more elusive. They are a kind of framework for things and events: something like a system of pigeon-holes, or a filing system, for observations. Space and time are not part of the real empir- ical world of things and events, but rather part of our mental outfit, our apparatus for grasping this world. Their proper use is as instruments of observation: in observing any event we locate it, as a rule, immediately and intuitively in an order of space and time. Thus space and time may be described as a frame of reference which is not based upon experience but intuitively used in experience, and properly applicable to experience. This is why we get into trouble if we misapply the ideas of space and time by using them in a field which transcends all possible experience—as we did in our two proofs about the universe as a whole. ... To the view which I have just outlined Kant chose to give the ugly and doubly misleading name ‘Transcendental Idealism'. He soon regretted this choice, for it made people believe that he was an idealist in the sense of denying the reality of physical things: that he declared physical things to be mere ideas. Kant hastened to explain that he had only denied that space and time are empirical and real — empirical and real in the sense in which physical things and events are empirical and real. But in vain did he protest. His difficult style sealed his fate: he was to be revered as the father of German Idealism. I suggest that it is time to put this right. - C&R, Chap 6 Kant believed in the Enlightenment. He was its last great defender. I realize that this is not the usual view. While I see Kant as the defender of the Enlightenment, he is more often taken as the founder of the school which destroyed it—of the Romantic School of Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel. I contend that these two interpretations are incompatible. Fichte, and later Hegel, tried to appropriate Kant as the founder of their school. But Kant lived long enough to reject the persistent advances of Fichte, who proclaimed himself Kant's successor and heir. In A Public Declaration Concerning Fichte, which is too little known, Kant wrote: ‘May God protect us from our friends. . . . For there are fraudulent and perfidious so-called friends who are scheming for our ruin while speaking the language of good-will.' - C&R, Chap 6 As Kant puts it, Copernicus, finding that no progress was being made with the theory of the revolving heavens, broke the deadlock by turning the tables, as it were: he assumed that it is not the heavens which revolve while we the observers stand still, but that we the observers revolve while the heavens stand still. In a similar way, Kant says, the problem of scientific knowledge is to be solved — the problem how an exact science, such as Newtonian theory, is possible, and how it could ever have been found. We must give up the view that we are passive observers, waiting for nature to impress its regularity upon us. Instead we must adopt the view that in digesting our sense-data we actively impress the order and the laws of our intellect upon them. Our cosmos bears the imprint of our minds. - C&R, Chap 6 From Kant the cosmologist, the philosopher of knowledge and of science, I now turn to Kant the moralist. I do not know whether it has been noticed before that the fundamental idea of Kant's ethics amounts to another Copernican Revolution, analogous in every respect to the one I have described. For Kant makes man the lawgiver of morality just as he makes him the lawgiver of nature. And in doing so he gives back to man his central place both in his moral and in his physical universe. Kant humanized ethics, as he had humanized science. ... Kant's Copernican Revolution in the field of ethics is contained in his doctrine of autonomy—the doctrine that we cannot accept the command of an authority, however exalted, as the ultimate basis of ethics. For whenever we are faced with a command by an authority, it is our responsibility to judge whether this command is moral or immoral. The authority may have power to enforce its commands, and we may be powerless to resist. But unless we are physically prevented from choosing the responsibility remains ours. It is our decision whether to obey a command, whether to accept authority. - C&R, Chap 6 Stepping back further to get a still more distant view of Kant's historical role, we may compare him with Socrates. Both were accused of perverting the state religion, and of corrupting the minds of the young. Both denied the charge; and both stood up for freedom of thought. Freedom meant more to them than absence of constraint; it was for both a way of life. ... To this Socratic idea of self-sufficiency, which forms part of our western heritage, Kant has given a new meaning in the fields of both knowledge and morals. And he has added to it further the idea of a community of free men—of all men. For he has shown that every man is free; not because he is born free, but because he is born with the burden of responsibility for free decision. - C&R, Chap 6 Socials Follow us on Twitter at @IncrementsPod, @BennyChugg, @VadenMasrani Come join our discord server!
In this episode we explore the correct context for understanding Kant's relation to the historical period known as “the Enlightenment” or “the Age of Reason.” On the one hand, Kant's Critique of Pure Reason may be understood as “critiquing reason to make room for faith.” On the other hand, the Method of Kant's Transcendental Philosophy reveals Spirit as the condition for the possibility of the unity of Mind and Body. We'll understand these insights by discussing what has been called “the Homeric Contest” to complete Kant's “System of Transcendental Philosophy.” The contest refers to the competition that may be witnessed in the writings of Fichte, Novalis, Hölderlin, Schelling, Schopenhauer, and Hegel. Understanding this historical contextualization of Kant's philosophy makes it much easier to see that contemporary Postmodern criticisms of Kant's philosophy are not actually criticisms of Kant's philosophy. Rather, they are criticisms of Descartes' philosophy. Thus, Kant's philosophy is not the problem; Kant's philosophy is the solution to the problem(s) with Descartes' philosophy. . Identity in Times of Crisis, Part II: Identity and Race Summary In this episode, I explore how Enlightenment ideas of natural law and human progress evolved into dangerous ideologies in the 19th and early 20th centuries. We trace the shift from rationalism to Romantic nationalism, particularly in Germany, where thinkers like Herder and Fichte laid the groundwork for racial and national ideologies. The concept of the Aryan race, as developed by figures such as Gobineau, Chamberlain, and Rosenberg, became central to these ideologies, blending pseudoscience with distorted interpretations of ancient texts. I discuss how these racial theories, particularly the myth of Aryan superiority, culminated in devastating consequences, including the rise of anti-Semitism and Nazi ideology. This episode unpacks the intersection of philosophy, race, and nationalism, showing how history can be manipulated through dangerous myths. Thank you for listening, and I hope this provokes critical thought on the subject. In this episode one of my past co-hosts Giulia Luvisotto takes the lead and discusses the book Money: The Currency of Politics with its author Stefan Eich, Assistant Professor of Government at Georgetown University. Eich draws attention on what he takes to be an important yet unduly neglected truth: far from being a neutral means of exchange, money is intrinsically political. To make his case, Eich retraces the genealogy of this thesis (and of its neglect) by looking at the authors that play a key role in it: Aristotle, Locke, Fichte, Marx and Keynes and tells a gripping story of how our conception of money changed because of contextual historical factors. Giulia and Stefan discuss these thinkers in sequence to bring forth how each contributes to the neglect of the political status of money, trying to highlight their peculiarities and clarify their ambiguities. But ultimately the goal is to get to the core of the matter: in what sense is money itself political? Why has this truth been concealed? What sort of politics do we want to strive for? Are there viable alternatives to the status quo?If successful, this episode would not leave you with a number of learnt lessons but with a heightened sense that more attention on money is needed and a thirst for further reflection on the matter.

Welcome back to Higher Density Living. In this episode, Alexander and Jason discuss the essence of meditation. Rudolf Steiner is well known as a proponent of the 'Anthropos'—the wisdom of the human being. Steiner's philosophy seeks to merge the spiritual understanding of humanity with cosmic laws, positioning humans as central to the cosmos's purpose. This perspective challenges modern materialistic and environmental narratives that view human existence as a problem to be managed rather than an integral part of the cosmic order. In this regard we are rejoined by special guest, Dr. Eric Cunningham, Ph.D., a Professor of Philosophy at Gonzaga University. His academic background includes a Master's degree in modern Japanese literature and a Ph.D. in history, both from the University of Oregon. Cunningham specializes in modern Japanese intellectual history and has research interests in Zen Buddhism, Catholicism, psychedelia, and eschatology. He is also the author of "Zen Past and Present" (2011) and is known for his work in combining traditional scholarly research with more esoteric and philosophical subjects. Rudolf Steiner was an influential thinker whose ideas spanned a wide range of disciplines, including education, agriculture, and the arts. Born in 1861 in what is now Croatia and later moving to Austria, Steiner initially made his mark as a literary scholar and philosopher, particularly noted for his work on Goethe's scientific writings. However, he is most famously known for developing the spiritual movement known as Anthroposophy, in his book How to Know Higher Worlds: A Modern Path of Initiation which he described as a form of "spiritual science." Rudolf Steiner's prolific image and his significant influence during the early 20th century form profound engagement in spiritual discourse of the human experience. Steiner's perspectives offered an alternative vision to the materialistic tendencies of his time, emphasizing spiritual science and the development of human consciousness. His concept of Meta History encompasses a pivotal event in 79, where he posits a fundamental battle between angelic hierarchies, notably involving Lucifer and St. Michael the archangel. This event, drawn from ancient mythologies like the book of Genesis, is situated within secular history, marking the descent of fallen spirits to earth. Interestingly, this aligns with a vision Pope Leo XIII had about demons being cast down to hell during a war. Steiner's narrative intersects with mainstream religiosity, particularly Catholicism, albeit from a mystical perspective. He contends that the unleashing of demons in 79 ushered in a uniquely strange era, symbolized by the end of the Kali Yuga, a dark age in Hindu cosmology. According to Steiner, humanity has reached its nadir and is now poised for spiritual ascent, returning to unity and evolution. Steiner's significance lies in his presence during key historical junctures, such as industrialization and World War I, and his recognition of the transformative shift post-World War I. He perceives the 1920s as a period of profound change, diverging from the ideals of the Enlightenment and Renaissance into a darker, more twisted reality. Steiner serves as a guide for humanity towards spiritual evolution and unity. This discussion ties into broader historical contexts, particularly World War I, which Steiner perceived not merely as a terrestrial conflict but as a reflection of cosmic battles, drawing upon the hermetic principle "as above, so below." He viewed these tumultuous times as the manifestation of spiritual warfare, with implications that stretched beyond the immediate horrors of the battlefield. Steiner suggested that the souls of the fallen soldiers participated in larger spiritual struggles, contributing to the ongoing battle between spiritual light and darkness. Moreover, Steiner's academic background in mathematics, physics, and philosophy profoundly influenced his teachings. Educated in Vienna, his engagement with contemporary scientific theories, including relativity and emerging ideas related to quantum theory, allowed him to integrate these concepts with esoteric and spiritual insights. His dissertation on Fichte's concept of the self, completed in 1891, reflects his deep philosophical grounding, which he later expanded upon in his spiritual teachings. Steiner's transition from a purely academic philosopher to a spiritual teacher began around 1899 when he published "The Philosophy of Freedom." This work marked a pivotal shift towards esotericism and laid the groundwork for his later Anthroposophical work, which seeks to synthesize spiritual knowledge with practical aspects of life, including education, agriculture, and medicine. The term "festival of knowledge" which was highly influenced by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe laid the groundwork for Steiner's later academic achievements. These initial forays into literature, written before he even attained his PhD, primarily focused on Goethe's interplay with science, a theme that continued to resonate throughout his career. The core of his scholarly work culminated in his dissertation, which later evolved into a book titled "The Philosophy of Freedom." This piece not only highlights his academic rigor but also showcases his deep dive into the realms of idealism and consciousness, themes that remain pivotal in contemporary philosophical debates. As we discussed previously, current theories of consciousness and idealism, such as those proposed by thinkers like Bernardo Kastrup and Donald Hoffman, often touch upon concepts similar to those he explored. They discuss the notion of a reality predominantly constituted by the mind, a perspective he had already articulated in the late 1800s using a different vocabulary, one that predated the advent of cybernetics. Interestingly, his exploration wasn't confined to pure philosophy; it also embraced an emotive dimension, adding a richer, more holistic layer to his theoretical constructs. This emotional infusion was particularly evident during the period you mentioned, where his philosophical inquiries intertwined with a broader, more sentient approach to understanding human cognition and consciousness. This blend of technical philosophy and emotional insight exemplifies the depth of his "festival of knowledge," bridging the gap between rational thought and human experience. He described as the crucifixion of Christ, which he termed the "mystery of Golgotha." He believed this event marked the turning point in cosmic history, signifying not just a theological or historical moment but a deep, transformative personal revelation. This wasn't a matter of philosophical debate for him; it was a visceral truth, deeply felt and integral to his understanding of reality. It was during this time that he synthesized a high-level logical comprehension of reality with a convicted, inner awareness of these cosmic truths. Unlike many philosophers who might purely engage in academic discourse, he integrated mystic visions and clairvoyance into his scientific and philosophical explorations. Steiner was not originally a staunch member of the Theosophical Society; he became associated with it through his lectures to German aristocrats and wealthy patrons. His involvement seems to have been a strategic move to promote a formal integration of spirituality into modern life. However, as the society increasingly embraced Eastern philosophies under the influence of figures like Madame Blavatsky, Colonel Olcott, and Annie Besant, Steiner felt a disconnect. He believed that Western traditions were essential for Western people and advocated for a spiritual understanding that respected cultural roots rather than adopting Eastern identities. This belief, coupled with disagreements over promoting Jiddu Krishnamurti as a new messiah—a notion Steiner vehemently opposed—led to his departure from the society. In addressing accusations of racism against Steiner, it's crucial to understand his use of the term "root race," which in his cosmology referred to stages of civilization development, such as Atlantis, rather than ethnicities. Steiner emphasized that race is a secondary characteristic and spoke of the spiritual importance of national and cultural identities in shaping individual destinies. This perspective suggests that while he recognized human diversity, he did not advocate for racial hierarchies. Indeed, his unique approach led him to play a significant role in the Theosophical Society, becoming the general secretary of its German section in 1920. However, his strong Christian orientation and his focus on Western esoteric traditions eventually caused a rift within the society. His dedication to integrating science, spirituality, and art for the holistic development of humanity prompted him to found his own society. By understanding the deep connections between our spiritual journey and the universe, we can foster a more holistic and sustainable approach to both personal growth and global challenges.
