Why Hope Won't Make You Happy (And What Will) - Albert Camus (Absurdism). In this podcast we will be talking about why hope will not make you happy from the philosophy of Albert Camus. This video also talks about how to live without hope and still find joy in the here and now. Albert Camus is one of the most representative figures of the philosophy of “absurd” or “absurdism". So here's how to live without hope and still find joy in the here and now - 01. Accept Life's Lack of Ultimate Meaning 02. Finding Meaning Through Actions, Not Answers 03. Live fully, unapologetically 04. Embrace Struggle 05. Love life as it is I hope you listening to these 5 ways to live without hope and still find joy in the here and now from the philosophy of Albert Camus, and find these insights helpful in your life. Albert Camus is one of the greatest French writers and thinkers. He was a philosopher, an author and a journalist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957 and his most famous works are The Stranger, The Plague, The Myth of Sisyphus, The Fall, and The Rebel. Camus is one of the most representative figures of the philosophy of the “absurd” or “absurdism,” which is a philosophical movement having as its central hypothesis that human beings exist in a purposeless, chaotic universe. Camus considered that absolute freedom must be balanced with absolute justice - too much freedom leads to the situation when the strong suppresses the weak but too much justice kills freedom, and we need to live and let live. As a promoter of the philosophy of the “absurd”, Camus believed that life has no meaning, that the universe simply exists and that it is indifferent to people's lives. We are like Sisyphus from Greek mythology, forever carrying that heavy rock to the top of the hill, although we know the rock will always fall down and our life's work is meaningless. Our condition might be tragic, but Camus considered that this exact condition hides a blessing in disguise: life does not have a meaning, but we are free to attribute it any meaning we want. His philosophy has inspired a lot of people in dealing with the absurdity of life and even today, his philosophy is extremely relevant.

ArTEEtude. West Cork´s first Art, Fashion & Design Podcast by Detlef Schlich.
In the grand finale of this trilogy, Detlef and Gregg explore deeper layers of artistic expression—philosophy, absurdity, and the punk soul's enduring melancholy. They muse about aging as an artist, Kafkaesque realities, and the weird joy of staying creatively restless. The episode closes hauntingly with Gregg Turner himself singing: “Franz Kafka.” A song that feels like a literary echo turned acoustic howl.Detlef Schlich is a rock musician, podcaster, visual artist, filmmaker, ritual designer, and media archaeologist based in West Cork. He is recognised for his seminal work, including a scholarly examination of the intersections between shamanism, art, and digital culture, and his acclaimed video installation, Transodin's Tragedy. He primarily works in performance, photography, painting, sound, installations, and film. In his work, he reflects on the human condition and uses the digital shaman's methodology as an alter ego to create artwork. His media archaeology is a conceptual and practical exercise in uncovering the unique aesthetic, cultural, and political aspects of media in culture.WEBSITE LINKS

What happens when a lavish dinner party refuses to end? Mike is joined by filmmaker Miguel Llansó and critic Rob St. Mary to unpack the surreal social satire of Luis Buñuel's The Exterminating Angel (1962). In this sharp and strange masterwork, a group of upper-crust guests find themselves mysteriously unable to leave a post-opera gathering—days pass, civility erodes, and Buñuel's absurdist lens skewers class, ritual, and the thin veneer of order. From sheep in the parlor to the creeping dread of inaction, we discuss the film's dream logic, religious and political interpretations, and its place in Buñuel's legendary career. Whether you're trapped by tradition, status, or just polite company, The Exterminating Angel remains one of cinema's most biting allegories—and we're not letting you leave until we've talked it through.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.

Something for nothingDo rewards and incentives damage our humanity? In much of our personal and professional lives, we receive rewards for good behaviour and carrying out our responsibilities. But, evidence now suggests there are risks to this approach. Studies show rewards can damage wellbeing, fostering dependence and undermining our own sense of control. And neuroscientists have shown those more prone to seeking reward have a 70% higher risk of addiction, with addictive behaviour now present in almost half of the U.S. population. So, should we move away from rewards-based systems, and instead learn to value doing the right thing simply for the sake of, well, doing the right thing?Paul Bloom is a Canadian-American psychologist, bestselling author, and celebrated speaker. Grandpa Bill-Nihilism-3/27/25 GB-1. Existentialism as a Response to Nihilism:Before we dive into how existentialism can help us move 'From Angst to Action,' it's important to understand its origins, As our esteemed guest, Byron Athene, will be pointing out, existentialism emerged, in part, as a response to nihilism. Nihilism, at its core, declares that 'life is meaningless because nothing matters.' This can lead to a bleak outlook, as Byron described, where 'nothing matters so why do we care? We might as well screw everybody over and to hell with the consequences!' However, Byron also suggests a more positive interpretation: 'nothing matters so why don't we make the most of this and enjoy the short time we have as much as possible?Against this backdrop, existentialism asserts that 'life has the meaning we give to it.' As Byron so eloquently puts it, 'I think that makes clear that everybody is an existentialist whether they know it or not because we're all giving life our personal meanings and responding to them. Catholics say, this is the meaning of life. Buddhists say this is the meaning of life, so...we create meaning.2. Existential Reframing:Byron will probably also introduce us to the concept of 'existential reframing,' a powerful tool for navigating life's challenges. He contrasts this with positive reframing, which seeks to find positives in negatives. Existential reframing, that he'll explain, is 'acknowledging that life is infinitely more important than anything existing within it.' So, even in a less-than-ideal situation, we can recognize that 'you're in a really lucky position to be alive to have that problem.' This shift in perspective can empower us to find solutions or make the most of our circumstances."3. Absurdism:Finally, Byron will touch on absurdism, another philosophical response to the search for meaning. Absurdism suggests that 'we strive to find meaning but doing so is an absurdly impossible task because we're never going to know.' As Byron illustrates, 'We're just metaphorical ants in an ant farm on the desk of a scientist.' This perspective acknowledges the inherent limitations of human understanding."Grandpa Bill will ask Byron, Byron, with these viewpoints in mind, how does this affect the way you treat your patients, and how you view the nature of the mind?Byron can then expand on how these philosophical viewpoints inform his practice.Questions for Byron Athene:Byron, with nihilism, existentialism, and absurdism in mind, how does that affect your work with clients in the UK?How do you help clients distinguish between the nihilistic despair and the existential freedom to create meaning? Can you provide examples of how existential reframing has helped your clients navigate difficult situations? How do you address the 'absurd' in therapy, and help clients find peace with the limitations of human understanding? How does the cultural climate of the UK influence the way people approach these philosophical concepts? In your opinion, how can individuals apply these philosophical ideas to their daily lives to enhance their well-being?How does a psychoanalytic viewpoint interact with an existential viewpoint?Nihilism, Existentialism, and Absurdism: A Conversation with Byron AtheneFrom Meaninglessness to Meaning: Existentialism in Everyday LifeExistential Reframing: Turning Challenges into OpportunitiesFinding Meaning in the Absurd: A Philosophical Approach to Well-BeingThe UK Mind: Psychoanalysis and ExistentialismGrandpa Bill and Byron Athene: The Meaning of LifeFrom Angst to Action: A Philosophical Discussion#Existentialism,#Nihilism,#Absurdism,#ExistentialReframing,#Psychoanalysis,#Psychotherapy,#MentalWellness,#MeaningOfLife,#GrandpaBill,#ByronAthene,#bhsaleskennelkelpholistichealinghour ,#@billholt8792,#UKTherapy,#Philosophy,#SelfDiscovery,#PersonalGrowth,#AnxietyToAction,

Vanessa Stockard recently visited the podcast for the 3rd time!Vanessa Stockard was born in 1975 in Sydney and spent her formative years in a small country town in the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. At 12 she returned to Sydney as a boarder at Abbotsleigh. After graduating from the College of Fine Arts (COFA) Sydney in 1998 with a BFA, Stockard launched head first into the avant-garde art scene in the bohemian village of Glebe.Stockard is one of the most dangerous artists on the Australian, and by extension, international scene. Her ethereal works of art are a window into the soul of a talented and complex artist, one whose legacy is bound to resonate well past her generation. The existential nature of her painting viscerally questions our concepts of social relationships and reality.Twenty years of introspection and experimentation, ranging over a number of media, have forged Vanessa's style and vulcanised her craft, enabling her to reveal complex misdemeanours, while simultaneously demanding the viewer's self-reflection. She deals with isolation and sadness with intimate care and attention.Vanessa is unhindered by failure, always continuing the discovery of things previously unseen, revealing work that is fresh, unlaboured and penetrating. The deceptive everyday nature of her subject matter belies hidden depths of relationship, feeling and emotion. One could describe her process as absence of thought, a freedom of construct, not unlike the stream of consciousness associated with authors such as Hemmingway and Thomas Wolfe. If light and shade were students, she would be their master. This skill, combined with a naturally deft hand and a determined use of perspective, imbue her subjects with gravitas. The artist refers to set design elements that often alter and morph as her piece progresses. She has said she feels grounded from her ability to draw from the benign surrounds of familiar life, infusing these images with a meaning that yields a meditative satisfaction.Stockard's oeuvre features many pieces developed without any direct visual reference but rather from memory, often incorporating domestic pets such as cats and dogs. Juxtaposing the anthropomorphic nature these animals are given by our society, she infuses the personification of virtue and vice into the everyday canine and feline status quo of our pets. Cats with their fluffy comical exteriors glint with an instinctive urge to kill and cruelly torment their prey, dogs with their providence of happiness, loyalty and friendship are flung back onto Churchill's menacing metaphor for depression. The Kafkaesque mindset behind such works is reminiscent of the existentialist authors like Sartre and Camus. Absurdism appears with cake imagery and its relation to a childlike nostalgia for happiness which may never be real, but rather imaginary, unattainable and unachievable. It's been said “pain is inexhaustible, it's only people who get exhausted…”One can never “have it all”, to be both the artist and patron. To intrinsically understand those things around us that others overlook is what we want from our artists, our creatives. They give voice to the profound mystery of the world around us, surrounded as we are with consumerism, pointless greed, deceit and dissatisfaction. There's no pretension here in these paintings, just spontaneous insight and beauty. Some art is said to speak volumes, but these works are more like innocent and delicate poems, whispering untold truths with an economy of words.Something Rather Than Nothing Podcast

Co-directors Pasqual Gutierrez & Ben Mullinkosson blur the lines between fiction and non-fiction with their latest film “Serious People”, which just had its World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.Ben discusses his filmmaking journey from Chicago to Shanghai and Pasqual shares the inspiration behind their film, which stemmed from a vivid dream he had, as well as real life - and also from the past works of Roy Andersson (“A Pigeon Sat on a Branch”) and Ruben Östlund (“Triangle of Sadness”). The discussion delves into the challenges of blending fiction and nonfiction, the importance of casting the right talent, and the creative process of improvisation. They reflect on the personal relationships that influenced the film and the unique challenges of co-directing with a partner. They also dive into the art of long takes, the concept of auto-fiction, and the ethical considerations in documentary filmmaking. They speak about the collaborative spirit that drove the project forward, culminating in their acceptance into Sundance. What Movies Are You Watching?Like, subscribe and follow us on our socials @pastpresentfeature

In this episode we discuss the relation between Nihilism and Absurdism. It's not surprising that Absurdism is so popular in Postmodernity. However, I haven't found anyone on the information superhighway - including Wikipedia - who has correctly characterized Absurdism yet. By the end of this episode we'll see that Absurdism is performative. That is to say, Absurdism is performative Nihilism. Nihilism believes it gets reality right. Absurdism believes there is no such thing as "getting reality right." Performative Absurdism doesn't relate to reality with a meaning-making that seeks to be reality-based. In this episode, some topics addressed are: Sisyphus, Capitalism & Schizophrenia, Humanism, Trans-Humanism, and Post-Humanism, Solipsism, the Liar Paradox, Postmodernity, Nihilism, and Absurdism. . In honor of the 420 episode, I decided to smoke a nice strong joint for this one while recording. And the topic pairs perfectly with weed: a philosophical discussion on the nature of life. Why are we here and what is the point of life? We'll summarize Friedrich Nietzsche's thoughts on nihilism, Albert Camus's musings on absurdism, and Jean-Paul Sartre's views on existentialism. Is there any real point to our lives? Does that matter? If there's no higher power watching over us or judging us, why even bother to try and be decent people? Why care at all about our fates? Absurdism claims that existence, as a whole, is absurd and although objective meaning does not exist, it doesn't mean we can't find + create our own. We're allowed to change our minds + reflect at any time, because the only meaning that matters, is the meaning we decide matters. “The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion”. — Albert CamusRESOURCE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absurdism#:~:text=Absurdism%20is%20the%20philosophical%20theory,a%20conflict%20with%20the%20world.DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. "...the reader's mind is filling in the blanks in between those panels and as a lip reader, that's what I do. I fill in the blanks. I'm trying to piece together what that person says. So, comics really make sense to me.” - Cece BellI first came to know Cece Bell through her groundbreaking semi-autobiographical graphic memoir novel, “El Deafo.” It was SO good that I had to read more by her. That's when I found out, through reading aloud with our (then younger) kids, that Cece's work is hilarious. Her zany, expressive storytelling combined with her vibrant illustrations create her unique style which she dubs, “absurdism for children.” During our conversation, Cece explains that it is in fact a style born out of misunderstandings, of her trying to make sense of the world around her while navigating it with deafness. While Cece is best known for "El Deafo," which received a Newbery honor, most of her books are for a slightly younger set. These include her laugh-out-loud funny "Chick and Brain" series, and her earlier Sock Monkey trilogy. Cece's journey to pursuing a career as an artist was first dependent on her discovering confidence in her abilities, and also in her disability. Something that she didn't fully realize until she wrote “El Deafo.” In this episode, Cece shares insights into her creative process, revealing how her experiences navigating the world with deafness have shaped her storytelling and sense of humor (and draws the connection between her deafness and her love for puns). She also tells us about the gory job that convinced her to pursue a career as an artist. For any budding comic creators, she also reveals the only book you need to read before your write your first graphic novel.***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***For her reading challenge, Sibling Stories, Cece has curated a list of books that highlight the special relationships between siblings, something that has always fascinated her.
