Well, this episode is a deep dive into some really fascinating and complex issues! Dr. Payne is a major influence on our thinking and we were delighted to host him as he shared some stories of his life and a lot about his work in textual criticism. Please find available for free download Phil Payne's summary article that answers the 12 most commonly alleged biblical reasons against the equal standing of man and woman. It puts in 8 pages the core argument of my 511 page book, Man and Woman, One in Christ: An Exegetical and Theological Study of Paul's Letters (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2009, list $32.99) available for $19.99 at https://www.lingistsoftware.You may also download free a summary of the 6 groundbreaking discoveries identified in Phil Payne's October 2017 New Testament Studies article on the Vaticanus Distigme-obelos symbols. That article was listed as the “Most read” article on the NTS website for at least a year. It is available to download free HERE. Note that the key reasons for regarding 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 as a later addition are unique to this passage and so do not undermine the reliability of any other passage of Scripture.Phil Payne later discovered 8 more Vaticanus distigme-obelos symbols. Most of them are in the sixth column of the open codex, where the distigme was put on the right side of the column to make it easier to see, including the case of the adulteress (John 7:58 - 8:11). All 8 have a gap in the text at the exact point where some other manuscripts add at least four consecutive words that were not in the original text. This makes the case exponentially stronger that this same symbol marking the beginning of 1 Cor 14:34-35 does indeed identify it as a later addition that was not in Paul's original letter. You may also download free Phil Payne's "Critique of Vaticanus Distigme-Obelos Denials" with photographs of the additional 8. Payne also responds to critiques of his work here.Dr. Payne can be contacted at philip.b.payne@gmail.com or through his website.

Yes. You read that correctly. N.T. Wright stopped by for a few minutes to talk about his new mammoth masterpiece (co-written with Mike Bird) The New Testament in its World: An Introduction to the History, Literature, and Theology of the First Christians. It is a wonderful work that both Allison and I will be using in our future (hopeful) teaching careers. We talked with Tom for a while about the project (warning: sporadic usage of the phrase ‘Bird Magic' does appear) and then we asked him a few questions about women in ministry, and about how the New Testament encourages women in leadership.Much thanks to Jana and others for their work in making this possible, and a hearty thank to Tom for kindly stopping by! Tom of course has written numerous works mentioned in the podcast, but here is a video on his thoughts on women in ministry as well as an article that spells out his thoughts.Support us on Patreon!

In this mega super yuge episode totally nearly 2 hours (!), Nick and Allison explore the complexities of bible translations, and how modern English translations impact gender. We look especially at the ESV and give a brief response to Mike Winger, a Christian apologist who did an entire video on bible translations that is both helpful and somewhat inaccurate, as well as some prominent complementarians who played politics with English translations.Support Nick and Allison on PATREON. Allison leads us through the terrain of Romans 5, and the Adam/Christ typology. Although gender is nor our primary concern here, it does come up in regards to how we understand Adam as "anthropos." What will we conclude? You will have to listen and find out!
Romans 1 is often the key text for affirming or disallowing same-sex eroticism in the Christian church. While our reading does have implications for a conservative reading of Romans 1 (which we both affirm), we seek to allow the text to speak for itself. What Romans 1 is doing is illustrating a negative example of gendered mutualism, and we therefore see Paul's sexual egalitarianism (or his view of Eden) shining through humanity's sinfulness.
This episode is a recording of Allison's presentation at Duke Divinity School. She covers the issue of Eve in relation to Christ, especially since Eve is most often delegated to a subordinate position in Paul's Christology. She shows that Eve is far more important to Paul's Christology, and aids us in discerning Paul's Divine Christology. Plus, Nick eats gross jelly beans. Enjoy!
Nick and Allison take a road trip and answer some listener questions.
Boy, we are exhausted in this episode. We talk about the Christians for Biblical Equality conference in Orlando, and muse about the future of egalitarianism.
In this episode, we touch on the doctrine of God, the Holy Spirit, and how we read narratives. Women, as it has been shown, are at the very forefront of Scripture's revelation, and why reading narrative well matters.
We've gotten some epic and provocative emails from various listeners, and so in addition to our exegesis of Galatians 3:28, we answered those questions! For more notes, see the link in the blog description. Allison wrote a killer article on this passage!
Pastor John Piper recently responded to a question about the future of 'male headship.' In this episode, Nick and Allison are joined by Dr. Jamin Hübner and they respond to Pastor John's comments, showing that Scirpture not only supports women in ministry, but that Pastor Piper is deeply mistaken. Plus, Allison does not drink any beer!
Nick and Allison talk about 1 Corinthians 14:34-35, textual criticism, interpolations, prophesy and Allison drinks a beer she hates! Expect a short primer on textual criticism and manuscripts, plus Allison threatens Nick.
In this episode, Allison and Nick discuss book corner, Christian identity and Allison tell us stories of sexism she has experienced. Persona, mildly funny, and full of surprises.
In this episode, Allison and Nick take a certain challenge and then exegete the entirety of one of Paul's most contested oassages: 1 Corinthians 11:2-16. They conclude that Paul affirms gender differences and not gender hierarchy.
This week, Nick and Allison exegete 1 Corinthians 7:1-16, one of the most neglected Pauline passages on marriage in the Bible. They conclude that this passage is rich in ethical content for Christians, and that marriage is a union of equals, bound to one another in mutual service and love. Far from being stuck in the first century, this passage speaks loudly to twenty-first century Christians and even beyond.
This week, Nick and Allison exegete Ephesians 5:18-33, one of the most contested passages on marriage in the Bible, and conclude that mutual submission is grounded in Christ's love for the Church, his body. They discuss 'headship' and 'submission,' concluding that Paul radically redefined both in an egalitarian direction.
In this episode, Allison and Nick walk through the Greek of 1 Timothy 3:1-13 and argue against the patriarchal reading, and conclude that Paul is affirming women elders and deacons, contrary to other interpretive options. They also briefly respond to John MacArthur's exegesis of this passage.
In this episode, Nick and Allison offer an egalitarian reading of one of the most difficult passages in the entire Bible. Upon close examine of the context, Nick and Allison conclude that this verse cannot be used to exclude women from exercising their God given gifts in church.
Where we - Nick and Allison (N/A) - introduce the show and ourselves. Nick talks about John Barclay's new book "Paul and the Gift" and Allison introduces us to her current research interest. Then we begin to talk about gender theology and the Bible.
