This week, we're joined by Inés Velásquez-McBryde, a pastor, preacher, reconciler, and mujerista theologian from Nicaragua and now residing in Southern California. She is the lead pastor and founder of The Church We Hope For. As a third-generation pastor, Inés shares her powerful journey of becoming the first female pastor in her family's lineage, drawing deeply from her Nicaraguan roots and the spiritual heritage of her ancestors. She highlights how her father, a "prophetic disruptor," played a crucial role in challenging traditional gender roles and encouraging her to lead. Inés reflects on the profound impact of her cultural and familial background, emphasizing the importance of honoring those who came before her as she leads with the power of her ancestors. She also introduces the concept of mujerista theology, which centers on the experiences of Latina women and seeks to dismantle patriarchal and colonial structures within the church. Throughout today's conversation, Inés invites us to consider how we can “lead like a woman,” reclaiming our bodies, voices, and identities in spaces where women have often been marginalized. We think you'll want to listen more than once to fully absorb the wisdom shared in this episode! Listener Resources: If you're a woman in ministry, we're here to support you! This is our 200th show anniversary and we couldn't do anything more special than this. It is happening again! A McBryde sister is being denied an opportunity she rightfully earned. Jamilah McBryde, the oldest of the three McBryde Sisters who wrestle, is the reigning 143lb Women's Freestyle NAIA National Champion. With that amazing accomplishment comes the opportunity to compete for a spot on the US Women's Olympic Wrestling team. If allowed to attend the Olympic Qualifiers, Jamilah could be the first woman in the world to compete as a wrestler at the Olympic level in hijab. However, Jamilah is being denied the right to compete, and a McBryde sister is once again being robbed of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - one that she fairly earned. I will have Jamilah her father and hopefully a UWW spokesperson on the show (I wouldn't hold your breath) If you want to help sign the petition below. If your as mad as me you can write everyone on Email list below https://www.change.org/p/urge-usa-wre... Please share this petition far and wide. Share it with friends and family. This week we're excited to welcome back activist, writer, and friend of the show, Charles McBryde! Charles has done extensive work with Mission Kharkiv, an NGO working to collect and transport lifesaving chronic and anticancer medication to besieged Ukrainian cities, and has been an outspoken supporter of the Ukrainian people since the start of the war. He has also garnered a lot of attention for his outspoken support of the Palestinian people and scathing criticism of Israeli actions in Gaza. 5 months into the war in Gaza, over 30,000 Palestinians have been killed, half the country lies in smoldering piles of rubble, countless cultural and religious sites have been destroyed, and the UN is sounding the alarm over the inevitable catastrophe of famine and starvation taking hold on the 2m residents of Gaza now huddled in southernmost section of the country. Throughout the war in Ukraine and now Gaza, Charles is one of the people we've looked to for honest, though-provoking commentary. You can follow him on Instagram and TikTok (@charlesmcbryde), X (@mcbrydecampbell), and we highly recommend subscribing to his Substack, Refuse Dystopia!

Waterfowl hunting is a longstanding Southern tradition and offers a great example of the benefits that can be had from well managed public lands and especially on privately owned agricultural lands which are a haven for wildlife of all types. As the first split of the 2023 waterfowl season in Florida has concluded, it seemed like the perfect time to gather up some of our extended family for an informal chat covering all things duck hunting in Florida and Arkansas, camaraderie, and conservation. If you want to feel like you're gathered around the table or fireside with friends, this is an episode you don't want to miss.
Renee McBride's childhood seemed pretty typical, until the day she learned the shocking truth about her father, that he was not away working at the Cottee's Cordial farm as she had so proudly believed but instead serving time in prison. At six years of age, Renee was suddenly faced with the reality that her daddy was a murderer. Renee's mother was a teenage runaway who became pregnant not long before he was incarcerated for the murder of two men. Today Renee shares her experience processing this as a 6-year-old and beyond and reflecting on the dynamic of the relationship with her mother as a result. An incredible story and insight that you can dive much deeper into through her two books, The House of Lies and Unravelling Us. We talk with freelance humanitarian TikTok star and anarchist revolutionary Charles McBryde about the trials, the alienation, the risk, and the ultimate reward of the extraordinary life that awaits anyone who truly throws themselves into the great work of fighting for a living future. We talk about how taking on the biggest problems in our world, though emotionally and physically extreme, is more unburdening than giving in to inaction. Answer the call and step out the door!

It takes courage to be a Canaanite woman who crosses the border of Tyre and Sidon and approach a rabbi to ask for mercy. The story of the Canaanite mother who demonstrates faith in Jesus is a compelling narrative of courage. She believes in the identity and authority of Jesus over demons and disease so she courageously asks him to heal her daughter. When Jesus sees her persistent faith, he does as she wishes. It takes courage to call out for mercy. it takes courage to have faith in God's vision for wholeness, flourishing, and justice. It take courage put faith into action and approach God for what we need. When we do, we become conduits for mercy. By Inés Velásquez-McBryde
In this Enneagram +Yoga podcast episode, Kat and Christy interview Lisa McBryde @lamcbryde about practices that can help Enneagram types 4, 5, & 6 experience personal growth. Lisa was born and raised a country girl from Jasper, Tennessee and was the son her Dad never had. She wanted to be a nurse for as long as I could remember and followed that dream to become a RN in 1982. Her specialty was Oncology and she administered chemotherapy to cancer patients and supported them in a very difficult time. Over 30 years ago she "fell" into yoga and like nursing it also became a passionate calling. Lisa tries to teach in such a way that she pushes the student, yet encourages them to feel a connection with every breath they take. She says she is a Type A personality and owns it 100% and so the yin part of her practice was initially a challenge, but now is such a welcome release. Her first certification was with Yoga Alliance. She had initially been teaching in the fitness industry and this option was part of that discipline. She met Sara Mingus and she steered her toward 200 hour teacher training with Dolly Starvos. Dolly and Lisa really connected and her eyes and mind were opened to so many things. This discipline called yoga serves its students individually and meets them where they are. She then completed Level I training with Baron Baptiste and learned so much about sequencing and assisting. She loves assisting and believes human touch is an integral part of the practice. What started as flexibility training to balance cardio and weight training, has led to this awareness of the breath, the mind and the body, as one, and no two days are the same. Several years ago she stepped out on her own to experience something different when she discovered a love and passion for fly fishing as it takes you to beautiful, calm places but forces you to focus. She is a confident, compassionate woman, and mother, who truly loves serving others. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/christy001/support

In this episode, we're joined by social media personality Charles McBryde as we unpack the radically accelerating world of social media activism and its co-optation by both political fringe politics and by the capitalist apparatus. We've watched as social media evolved from traditional marketing to absurdism to the anthropomorphizing of brands on social media, including fake feuds and shit-posting. How much more can brands mimick people, and what happens when it is no longer an effective marketing method? These questions are imperative to begin thinking about as we try to find ways to engage and use social media for meaningful work, and how we can further separate branding for just causes in platforms designed to sell you more products. Ultimately, if we understand how the system works as platforms rise and fall, what can we do to start being proactive in this cycling process to leverage the system for a more egalitarian world? Description: If you long to see God's Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven, this conversation is for you. Be the Bridge founder and podcast host, Latasha Morrison, is joined by Pastor Inés Velásquez-McBryde. She brings her heart, experiences, and wisdom to this episode as they discuss the dynamics of multi-ethnic churches. They consider the importance of understanding systemic history in order to plant multi-ethnic churches and the history of colonization in the Americas, the liberating power of lamentation and the hope and beauty of reimagining church. They also connect the struggle of the early church in desegregation and in integration with the continued struggles in the U.S. church today. If you are a pastor doing the work of reconciliation, stay tuned until the end to hear Pastor Inés speak a powerful prayer over you. This needed conversation holds the needed reminders of the gift of the Brown church and the continual goodness of God. Quotes: “The immigrant church in the U.S. is a gift. The Brown church is a gift to the U.S. church. We are a means of God's grace.” -Inés Velásquez-McBryde “Often I found out that people wanted proximity to people of color in the pew, but they did not want proximity to the pain of people of color outside of the pew.” -Inés Velásquez-McBryde “We are only adopted into the family of God because of justice.” -Latasha Morrison “Reckoning has to begin with repentance. And if there's no lamentation, there cannot be liberation.” -Inés Velásquez-McBryde “This work as a reconciler is a lifestyle and we're always learning.” -Latasha Morrison Links: Ads: Become a Recurring Partner of Be the Bridge Shop the Be the Bridge Store Connect with Pastor Inés Velásquez-McBryde: Instagram Twitter Blog The Church We Hope For Connect with Be the Bridge: Our Website Facebook Instagram Twitter Connect with Latasha Morrison: Facebook Instagram Twitter Host & Executive Producer - Latasha Morrison Senior Producer - Lauren C. Central Station - Stories from Outback Australian Cattle Stations
So often, stories about outback Australia revolve around people working on the land. But, not everyone who lives in the outback wears a big hat and cowboy boots.Renee McBryde lives in Alice Springs, Australia's red centre. It's a world away from the housing commission in Sydney where she spent her childhood.Renee's story is unlike any we have ever come across. At the age of 6 she learnt that her father, who has been absent her entire life, wasn't working away, but indeed serving a prison sentence for murder. Her relationship with her young mother was turbulent at times, which she was yet to realise was a part of a cycle within her family. It's easy to imagine how Renee's life could have turned out. What's harder to wrap your mind around is how it did turn out. Today Renee is the author of two best selling memoirs, “House of Lies”, and “Unravelling Us”, and by day she works in the Child Protection unit as a social worker. In this episode Renee shares the path that led her to this role, and what working in child protection is really like.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/central-station. This week, we welcome back activist, influencer, and humanitarian Charles McBryde (@charlesmcbryde on IG & TikTok)! Charles spent a month and a half in Ukraine working with Mission Kharkiv, a vital NGO that is focused on providing life-saving medical treatment to those affected by the ongoing Russian invasion. Healthcare needs in places like Kharkiv go far beyond battlefield aid for soldiers. Think about this: close to 12,000,000 people have been displaced by the war. Part 2: Boundaries with Lisa McBryde. In this Enneagram +Yoga podcast episode, we explore the importance of the importance of boundaries for Enneagram types 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Several years ago Lisa stepped out on her own to experience something different when she discovered a love and passion for fly fishing as it takes you to beautiful, calm places but forces you to focus. She is a confident, compassionate woman, and mother, who truly loves serving others. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/christy001/support

Many of us have faced experiences in life that call the way we see everything into question. Some experiences cause us to question the very nature of who God is and force us to re-cognize who we are, how we can heal and how we show up in the world. This week Ines Velasquez-McBryde invites us into the trauma of losing her mother in a plane crash when she was a child and how that and the subsequent loss of her father's emotional presence to clinical depression distorted the image she held of God. She shares about her journey of healing and the image of God she reconstructed in response. Then we reimagine Acts 2:1-13 and the radical inclusivity of God. Intersections with Phil Allen, Jr. Episode: 004; Courage is Contagious: The ‘Good Trouble' of White Allyship Airdate: October 26, 2020 Length: 1:20:00 Guest(s): Pastor Bobby Harrison, The Church We Hope For In this week's episode of Intersections with Phil Allen, Jr., host Phil Allen and guest Pastor Bobby Harrison of The Church We Hope For discuss the support given by white allies to social justice issues that resulted in Black protests around the country this year. When Pastor Harrison, who is white, arrived at the intersection of race, culture and theology, he found himself standing in metaphorical heavy traffic, a place where the gospel of equality was not widely welcomed. A man with an abiding commitment to the challenge of justice and equality, Harrison shares his message and story with Intersections in this week's episode “Courage is Contagious: The ‘Good Trouble' of White Allyship.” Harrison is co-founder with Inés Velásquez-McBryde of The Church We Hope For, a growing southern California-based, multi-ethnic online house of worship. The pastor is also featured in Allen's documentary, “Open Wounds,” a story of generational trauma and its impact on Allen's South Carolina family. Gather with us for “Courage is Contagious: The ‘Good Trouble' of White Allyship” on Intersections with Phil Allen, Jr. ____________ Phil Allen, Jr. is a Los Angeles-based pastor, social justice activist, filmmaker and author. His book “Open Wounds” explores the murder of Nate Allen—Phil Allen's grandfather—in the Jim Crow era of South Carolina and how that traumatic event resonated through generations of his family. “Open Wounds” – which is based on the Allen-produced documentary of the same name – will be published in February 2021. Allen is a Ph.D. student studying Christian ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA.
Intersections with Phil Allen, Jr. Episode: 003; “The Latinx Lens: Keeping Faith in the Face of Injustice” Airdate: October 19, 2020 Length: 1:12:43 Guest(s): Pastor Inés Velásquez-McBryde How do you sustain your faith when injustice arrives at the intersection of race, culture and theology? Intersections with Phil Allen, Jr. addresses this challenge in this week's episode, “The Latinx Lens: Keeping Faith in the Face of Injustice.” Joining us for this lively conversation is our guest, Inés Velásquez-McBryde, who describes herself as “a pastor, reconciler and imperfect follower of Jesus.” More specifically, McBryde is Chaplain at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA, and received her Master of Divinity degree from Fuller's School of Theology. She is also co-founder with Pastor Bobby Harrison of The Church We Hope For, a southern California-based church which continues its growth and outreach online in spite of the global pandemic. Equally assured in her voice and her faith, McBryde was introduced to injustice early in life. Working in her youth as a translator for American missionaries in her native Nicaragua, McBryde saw first-hand the debilitating impact of systemic racism. In “The Latinx Lens: Keeping Faith in the Face of Injustice,” McBryde discusses her background as a Nicaraguan-American, her commitment to her faith and shares the tools she uses to battle injustice whenever and wherever it appears. In a journey punctuated by trauma and shattering revelations within her faith, McBryde continues to represent herself and her faith as a woman, as Latinx and a woman of color, and as a leader with a voice and vision.
