On this episode, we're talking about the 1995 classic Friday, starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker. A film that's still serving up laughs and quotables 30 years later. We get into what set Friday apart from the other so-called “hood” movies of the '90s and early 2000s. While most leaned into violence and heavy drama, Friday took a different route, spotlighting the humor and everyday moments of life in the hood. Plus, we give a quick, spoiler-free review of One Of Them Days, a new release that share the same comedic DNA.If you enjoy the content that we're making and you're looking for ways to support our independent podcast, here's a little something that you can do:Please leave us a 5 star rating or review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podchaser or Goodpods. If it's merch that you're looking for, check out our store, Nuthin' But A Tee Thang, at teethang.comSpreading the word about the show to your friends and family helps too.Sign up for our monthly newsletter, Liner Notes. However you choose to support, know that it is greatly appreciated as always.

This week we're discussing 3 brothers from Boston, Massachusetts, who were able to bridge the gap between hip hop and R&B in a way that hadn't been done up until that point. Their music was “mentally Hip Hop, smoothed out on the R&B tip, with a Pop feel, appeal to it.” We're talking about Bell Biv Devoe. Made up of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe—all members of New Edition—they branched off and blew up in 1990 with Poison, an album that defined the "new jack swing" era, and this week just happens to be the 35th anniversary (damn!) of its release, so we decided to get into that and more! Here's a link to the playlist for this episode. If you enjoy the content that we're making and you're looking for ways to support our independent podcast, here's a little something that you can do:Please leave us a 5 star rating or review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podchaser or Goodpods. You can also drop a few coins in our tip jar here: https://ko-fi.com/troypodcast if you're feeling generous. If it's merch that you're looking for, check out our store, Nuthin' But A Tee Thang, at teethang.comSpreading the word about the show to your friends and family helps too.Sign up for our monthly newsletter, Liner Notes. However you choose to support, know that it is greatly appreciated as always.

The reports of hip hop's demise have been greatly exaggerated. In recent months, we've heard plenty about its supposed decline, yet these critics overlook the genre's deep influence across other musical landscapes—from K-pop and country to mainstream pop. Hip hop has become so ingrained in our culture that now, simply because it's no longer viewed as an “underground” genre, it feels like it's fading. In this episode, we're exploring the misconception about hip hop's role and relevance in today's pop culture landscape. This week we are talking about something that we've mentioned on this pod a lot. How many times have we talked about a song that we love that wasn't the original, it wasn't on the album, but it was on the cassette or the CD single? Or sometimes it was a music video. Yeah, it was similar, but there were some differences that made it stand out, and most cases made it better. So, for this episode, we're talking about the remix. We're gonna talk about some of our favorites, some we don't like as much, and some that we just completely forgot about.
