dream hampton reflects on the dawn of the golden era of hip-hop on Sole Free with Harlan FriedmanRecorded on the red carpet, at this years Tribeca Festival, Harlan recently caught up with dream hampton and W. Kamari Bell at the premier of the documentary It Was All a Dream. Also on site were the films executive producer Christopher Jordan Wallace, son of the late Notorious B.I.G., and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter, founding member of The Roots. Hey everyone, This week we hit our second A Tribe Called Quest Album and we pretty much become the best podcast about Midnight Marauders. We are talking USA up all night, Jock Jams, and the time Rob went to Military School. Aaron talks about Rucking and Rob talks about talking about getting horny. Everyone thinks its normal that Aaron orders messed up stuff at the ball game and we go over the insane music choices our nephews are making. Then we go over Midnight Marauders and talk about how this album is a little more grown up than Low End Theory but still fun. Then Rob talks about talking about being horny again. Next week, we have Bjork with Homogenic and no one will get sick during the recording of the podcast.
Once upon a midnight dreary, we recorded the best podcast about Pavement and the 199th greatest album of all time, Slanted and Enchanted. Quoth our downloaders "Nevermore". The first half of this podcast is sponsored by Hardees, during which we discuss our favorite Summer Olympic events and the utility of wagons. Then, we dive into the most important Delta meltdown that has impacted one traveler's upgrade. Finally, we become the best podcast about literature and discuss Edgar Allen Poe's short stories, the best books of the 21st century, and a book about an erotic scene with a jazz-playing bear. Then at (50:00) we break down Pavement's debut studio album Slanted and Enchanted. We discuss Pavement's performance at Lollapalooza, indie bands, and lo-fi music. Next week, we'll keep it rollin' when we become the best podcast about A Tribe Called Quest and cover the 1993 hip-hop album Midnight Marauders.
Het tweede album van A Tribe Called Quest Niet alleen het tweede studio album van de groep, maar ook het tweede album dat wij van de groep bespreken. Vinden wij het beter dan Midnight Marauders? Je hoort het in deze aflevering. Back in the day on the boulevard of Linden Dat is waar het allemaal begon voor dit viertal.

On episode 149, we're honoring this 1993 musical masterpiece. This classic ATCQ album embodies everything that made us me fall in love with hip-hop. It was pure perfection. An absolute game changer and the album that helped usher in the 2nd golden era. Like what we've recently done with Paul's Boutique, we strip this album completely and build it back using original samples in true TIP fashion. We reproduce this classic that'll allow you to hear this album in a whole new way. Get ready to relive 1993 all over again. We've got bangers from Ghostface Killah, M.O.P, Nature, Smif N Wessun, Pete Rock, Juggaknots, Ras Kass, Non Phixon, Cali Agents, Darc Mind and Vakill. At the break, we discuss freestyle rappers. That's right, we talk Harry Mack all the way to J.U.I.C.E. and why we consider them the Harlem Globetrotters of Rap. We attempt to understand Dre's distain for certain battle rappers and white rappers and Kevlar does his best Aesop Rock impersonation. We also talk about some recent movies and shows like Tires and decide Midnight Marauders is the next album to get the 360-Treatment like Paul's Boutique. Every once in a while, an interview turns more into a conversation amongst rap dudes. We anticipated having Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte for just 45 minutes, so when I tell you the interview lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes, it tells you just how funny and relatable these guys are to talk to. We covered an awful lot, yet it wasn't nearly enough once it was over. We discuss the May the Lord Watch documentary, their love for Beck or Bjork and their hate for Sci-Fi and its magical white people. We touch on their ridiculous stretch of music that ultimately burnt them out. We get into the brilliance of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ice Cube's Death Certificate, which is better Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders, and Dominican broads making chili con queso. We also talk Ghostface, Murs, Common, The Roots, Evidence, Kendrick Lamar and their affection for Outkast. I saw a great quote the other day and it said, "If Wu-Tang is for the kids, Little Brother is for the ones that raise them." Thanks to Rapper Big Pooh, Phonte, Andre Barnes and our longtime homie, I.D. for the idea. Stay tuned as we prepare to drop our Little Brother tribute in early March. Enjoy the discussion. www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio

The crew reviews A Tribe Called Quest's classic third album Midnight Marauders as it turns 30. Off the heels of their groundbreaking sophomore debut, 1991's The Low End Theory, the group rebounded to put through what many to believe to be their most cohesive work yet. After famously making the low end of bass their calling card and backdrop of the jazz sampled beats, the momentum continued with group member Q-Tip working with legendary engineer Bob Power to leave the resonant noise from their samples, creating a grittier and harder sound.Over 14 tracks, Q-Tip and Phife Dawg expertly spit and trade clever, biting and, at times, fun and hilarious bars. The album spawned two classic singles which stand out as the groups best: "Award Tour" and "Electric Relaxation", both which received heavy radio play and still are wildly popular today. 30 years later, this album is marked as a crown jewel of a trilogy of Tribe's first three albums and has been noted a keen sonic influence to the groups successors--in spirit and practiceVisit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: A Tribe Called Quest's "Midnight Marauders" Turns 30 | Album Anniversary https://albumism.com/features/a-tribe-called-quest-midnight-marauders-album-anniversaryThe Daily Beat: 30 Years Ago, A Tribe Called Quest's "Midnight " Changed Hip-Hophttps://www.thedailybeast.com/a-tribe-called-quests-midnight-marauders-turns-30The Grio: Symphonic Sampling: A Tribe Called Quest's 'Midnight Marauders" and Wu-Tang Clan's 'Enter the Wu-Tang"https://thegrio.com/2023/11/09/symphonic-sampling-a-tribe-called-quests-midnight-marauders-and-wu-tang-clans-enter-the-wu-tang/HipHopDX: A Tribe Called Quest Celebrates 30 Years of 'Midnight Marauders" with New Merchhttps://hiphopdx.com/news/tribe-called-quest-midnight-marauders-30th-anniversary-merchSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It's no secret to anybody who knows me that Midnight Marauders by ATCQ is one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time. When you talk about hip-hop classics this project embodies everything that defines a project to be that. Midnight Marauders was released Nov. 9th, 1993, followed up by their previous effort 'Low End Theory' (another Classic), and still in heavy rotation today. 30 years later this album aged like fine wine and still holds an important part of my childhood in the 90s. On this bonus episode me & the homie Lew talk about the impact this album had on us and for hip hop culture. We break down some of the album's singles and other stand out tracks that made this album a masterpiece. If you're a music nerd like the two of us are, you will enjoy this conversation. #WhoGotNext # CLTure

B. Cox and J Owe look back at Black Moon's debut classic album Enta Da Stage as it turns 30. The Brooklyn trio made up of DJ/producer DJ Evil Dee and emcees Buckshot (fka Buckshot Shorty) and 5ft began their journey in high school, shopping around demos and looking for a deal. Impressed by the group, they signed with Nervous Records and was given the green light to record their first single "Who Got Da Props?".Featuring smooth samples with crisp drums and impeccable cuts, the album spun tales of life in Brooklyn and with Buckshot and 5 ft expertly wordsmithing pictures that painted a dark picture for listeners and observers.Featuring the likes of future Boot Camp Clik mates Smif-N-Wessun, Dru Ha and Havoc from an also upcoming rap group Mobb Deep, the album featured a similar motif and sound like other groundbreaking New York-based rap albums like Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers, Midnight Marauders,The Sun Rises In The East, Ready to Die and Illmatic over the next 12 months that have been credited with helping to bring a focus and emphasis back to East Coast hip-hop in the midst of a dominant West Coast run.The album, while not selling well commercially, was widely acclaimed by fans, particularly underground heads and the media alike. It is consistently listed one of the best albums in the phenomenon that was 1993 in hip hop and also noted as of the most influential hip-hop albums of the 90s.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: Black Moon's 'Enta Da Stage' Turns 30https://albumism.com/features/black-moon-debut-album-enta-da-stage-album-anniversaryMedium: 30 Years for Black Moon's 'Enta Da Stage': A Game Changer For Hip-Hop https://medium.com/@ShamarieKnight/30-years-of-black-moons-enta-da-stage-a-game-changer-for-hip-hop-c2c8ae65dcdfHipHopDX: Duck Down Records Founders Buckshot ad Dru Ha Reflect 'Enta Da Stage' 25 Years Later https://hiphopdx.com/interviews/id.3160/title.duck-down-records-founders-buckshot-dru-ha-reflect-on-enta-da-stage-25-years-laterSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Dan Gedman might be the smartest dude I've ever had a sit-down conversation with, and he certainly has the deepest voice of any I can recall, which is a batshit combo if you're in to running metrics on how stupid you think you might be.Whew.What a chat, though. I've never gone into an interview thinking I'll be less prepared than my guest, but never did I imagine feeling dumber and less knowledgable than a guest who didn't prepare at all! Yyyikes.Anyway, Dan is a really awesome dude. He just is. I hate to distill it down to that, but -- if we're being honest -- that's all any guy wants...is to be known and remembered as an awesome dude. Now, I'm obviously not married to Dan, and I'm not his business partner, but he has always been the nicest guy I run across. He's an A+ host with fine-tuned hospitality skills. He's a funny fellow, and -- well -- goddamn it if he doesn't know the shit out of his music.Christ.Dan's a son and a brother and a husband and a father to three and a business partner and a music-savvy cat, but he's also just...he's doing it right. I think. You know...from the outsider standpoint. He runs this thing called Liquid9. I'm still not sure what they do. They might traffic Russian mail-order brides (Note: Joke! It's a joke! Take it easy...), but I think they produce music videos, among other sleek, industry kinds of things.Regardless, Dan's for sure a have-back.I felt humbled having him on, and -- while we covered a few records -- there're for sure more where that came from, and I'm legit' excited about what our next visit might look like. The ones we touched on today include the following:Blood on the Tracks, Bob Dylan (1975)Outlandos d'Amour, The Police (1978)Tim, The Replacements (1985)Copper Blue, Sugar (1992)Midnight Marauders, A Tribe Called Quest (1993)Illmatic, Nas (1994)Heartbreaker, Ryan Adams (2000)Is This It, The Strokes (2001)I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, Bright Eyes (2003)Black Sheep Boy, Okkervil River (2005)I'd be pleased as punch if you gave this conversation a listen. They don't get much better. One final note: I fuck up a lot on this thing.A lot. It's hard to focus on the questions and listen to the answers and keep the thing moving and be aware of the time and of every thing you have said on every other episode.Point being, I used to scoff like a little punk at podcasters for such things. And to hopefully make up for that, I want to point out my mistakes when I become aware of them. In this case, Dan wasn't the first guest with biological parents that're both still alive and together. Jason (episode #1) was, but...that was six months ago, and I'm an aging human.I'm far from perfect. Really far. If you know that and listen anyway, praise be to ye.Blessings.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio samples. They are both clips from "Next to You," by Poolside, off of their 2012 release called, Pacific Standard Time (c/o themselves).
A trailblazer at the INTERSECTION OF THE WORLDS of art, fashion, sports, and music, to name a few - DANIEL ARSHAM makes moves that shake the very foundation, push the perceptions of, and bridge the gaps within pop culture. From growing up in MIAMI to the steady beat of THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G., in 1994 - the height of the hip hop moment, to later moving to New York City and launching a hyper successful art career, ARSHAM has premiered as many show openings as he has had creative titles. Being named the first ever creative director in the NBA for the Cleveland CAVALEIRS, Arsham' core identity is unfazed by trends, but lives at the zeitgeist of THE NOW. He's always working, but when he's in his studio there's never a moment without music. Reminiscing on being a kid enthralled by A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, his propensity for visual STIMULATION, ACUITY, and MEMORY runs deep. An artist through and through, he recalls unpeeling the plastic and revealing the handpainted green, black and red colors of MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS. ARMAN and ARSHAM spend the afternoon in LONDON, overlooking the city and diving into everything from the impact and INGENUITY VIRGIL ABLOH inspired in everyone around him, to ARSHAMS own future ambitions. This episode is not one to miss. www.areweonair.com/daniel-arsham www.instagram.com/areweonair/ www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
This week the Vinyl Boyz drop the needle on the 90s classic hip-hop record from A Tribe Called Quest titled Midnight Marauders. Released on November 9, 1993, by Jive Records. John “Q-Tip” Davis a.k.a. Kamaal Fareed, Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor, and Ali Shaheed Muhammed had already earned the adoration of dedicated hip-hop heads and fans of other genres with their previous projects. But with Midnight Marauders, they cemented their legend. Tribe were in a difficult position when working to put together Midnight Marauders: how do you follow up literally one of the best hip-hop albums of all time? Following their debut People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths Of Rhythm (1990), their sophomore LP The Low End Theory (1991) showcased the group's vastly improved production chops and rhyming abilities. With their second album, they created perfect music to chill and vibe out to. It was a masterful artistic achievement. This album we reviewed this week is ranked in the top 5 of all time when discussing the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. Commercially, Midnight Marauders is the A Tribe Called Quest's highest selling album. The album sold over 1,000,000 copies within it's first year, making it a platinum hit. It also peaked #70 on the UK album charts, #8 on the Billboard 200, and took the top spot Top R&B/Hip Hop chart. A lot of the album's success is due to its timeless classic of a single “Award Tour” which peaked at #47 on the Billboard Hot 100. It's influence has spanned decades with the track being referenced by the likes of Wale, Kanye West, Common, Azealia Banks, and Justin Timberlake. Recording sessions for the album occurred at Battery Studios, Platinum Island Studios and Scorcerer Sound in New York City. Its production was mainly handled by Q-Tip, with contributions from Skeff Anselm, Large Professor and the group's DJ, Ali Shaheed Muhammad. A culmination of the group's two previous albums, it features an eclectic, gritty sound based on jazz, funk, soul and R&B samples, in addition to socially conscious, positively-minded, and humorous lyrics. Thanks for listening. Next week we will be reviewing Metallica's Black Album from 1991. Please subscribe and tell your friends about us! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this episode Kris and Devin discuss Check The Rhime, the first single from A Tribe Called Quest's classic The Low End Theory. They get into how the project changed the landscape of sampling, Phife coming into his own, and how a classmate stealing Kris's art in high school might have contributed to him writing Tribe off after their first album. They answer the impossible question: Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders, and we find out their picks for the most ridiculous exaggeration they've heard from a rapper. Every once in a while, we hit you with a tribute that requires several hours of your time. This is one of them. The Native Tongues collective are comprised of some of the most important, most influential and some of biggest innovators hip-hop has seen. With the help and hustle of DJ Red Alert and Chris Lighty, the Native Tongues were a force to be reckoned with. The Jungle Brothers paved the way for groups like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Black Sheep. Prior to The Flava Unit, Queen Latifah was this crew's Den mother. Along with her protégé Monie Love, they were both instrumental in helping the female movement in hip-hop. The Native Tongues provided plenty of classic albums, countless anthems and produced more offspring than Joe Jackson (RIP). The Natives helped jumpstart the careers of Busta Rhymes, Chi-Ali, Mos Def, J Dilla and have influenced artists such as Brand Nubian, K.M.D., Common, The Beatnuts, Bush Babees, The Roots, Slum Village, Little Brother, Kanye West, Black Star, Pharrell, Hieroglyphics, The Pharcyde, J5, Kedrick Lamar, Pusha T, Andre 3000 and even Nas. They've influenced everyone. Odds are, every rapper imaginable has heard Straight Out The Jungle, De La Soul Is Dead, The Low End Theory, Buhloone Mindstate, Midnight Marauders, or Stakes Is High and possibly has several of those albums listed among their favorites, too. The Native Tongue brand was strong despite some internal conflict, growing pains and different career paths. They left an everlasting impression on hip-hop. It is our privilege to present to you The Native Tongues Tribute Part 1. You won't find another NT tribute like this and we're just getting started! www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio
