What twelve songs would sustain you if you were stranded on a desert island for the rest of your life? Matt Sidhom finally reveals his carefully curated Desert Island Mix—a musical journey that offers surprising insights into his life, memories, and what matters most. The mix opens with deeply personal selections: his wedding dance song Dave Matthews' "So Damn Lucky" and George Strait's touching "Love Without End" representing Matt's love for his children. From there, the musical landscape expands dramatically to include Bruce Springsteen's inspiring live rendition of "Growing Up," Billy Joel's cinematic "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," and Kool Moe Dee's lyrically brilliant "I Go to Work."Each song serves a specific purpose for island survival: Badly Drawn Boy's subtle Christmas track "Donna and Blitzen" to mark the passage of time, Weezer's defiant "Pork and Beans" as a soundtrack for learning survival skills, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer's experimental "Carnival 9" for when isolation hallucinations might set in. The philosophical questions posed in The Killers' "Human" ("Are we human or are we dancer?") take on new meaning in extended solitude. What makes this episode fascinating isn't just the diverse musical selections spanning rock, country, rap, and prog—it's the window these choices open into Matt's values, memories, and what brings comfort in isolation. The perfectly chosen closing track, The Rolling Stones' "Waiting on a Friend," captures the ultimate desert island emotion. As you listen, you'll inevitably wonder: what songs would make your own Desert Island Mix? Welcome back to Vulnerability Is the New Sexy. Today, we're diving into a real conversation that's been sitting heavy with me. I recently saw a clip of Kool Moe Dee saying something that stuck with me—he called the drug dealer the first sellout in the Black community. Then, I saw another clip of Black celebrities openly praising movements and ideologies that seem to go against our people.""It made me wonder—who has done more damage to the Black community? The drug dealer who brought destruction to our neighborhoods? The Black celebrity who profits off our culture while promoting anti-Blackness? Or is it something bigger—systemic forces, white supremacy, economic oppression? And if we're keeping it all the way real, how have women's responses to these types of men played a role in this dynamic?""So today, I'm chopping it up with my brothers Jonathan, Q, and Walter. We're going to break this down, challenge some narratives, and get to the root of who or what has really hurt us the most

Ever since KRS-One started the "Stop The Violence" movement in the 80s with its flagship song "Self-Destruction" which featured some of the Who's Who of rap at the time: KRS-One, D-Nice, Stetsasonic, Kool Moe Dee, MC Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, Heavy DPublic Enemy (Chuck D & Flavor Flav), and others, rap has been fighting an uphill battle with itself. While indirectly honoring Nipsey Hussle, Kendrick Lamar performed a pop out concert in the name of peace and unity. On the episode I talk about Kool Moe Dee and the beef he had with L.L. Cool J.  A lot of people don't know about this and it was kind of a big deal that shook up both of their personal lives.  When you're a sensitive rapper like these two, you can let your emotions run away from you but these guys need to learn to squash this beef and move on with their lives.  You never know but they could end up being really good friends.  They have so much in common.  First of all they're rappers, so they have that.  The other thing is they both have initials in their names.  LL has three letters though, and that's a lot.  Kool only has one letter in his name and he actually spells it phonetically so that might not count.  That could be the source of the friction between them.  If so, well...that changes everything.  We'll delve deeper into this in future descriptions.Support the showGo to hunchbunny.com to see all the hidden secrets!!!

We are not sure if Larry Johnson is a big Kool Moe Dee fan, but regardless, he must be rhetorically asking all of his doubters "How ya like me now?" On Sunday, Ohio State landed 5-star defensive tackle Justin Scott from Chicago. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound Scott is ranked as the No. 4 defensive lineman and the No. 21 overall recruit in the country in the 2024 class, per the 247Sports Composite. It was a great get for Johnson and the Buckeyes. (And to be clear, several staff members assisted in the recruitment.) But the good news likely will not stop there for the Buckeyes in terms of defensive line recruiting. 5-star edge rusher Dylan Stewart was Crystal Balled to OSU by Steve Wiltfong and Brian Dohn on Sunday. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Stewart is the No. 3 edge and No. 13 overall prospect in the 2024 class according to the Composite. And we of course cannot forget that 5-star defensive lineman Eddrick Houston has been Crystal Balled to the Buckeyes by Wiltfong and Bill Kurelic for a few weeks. If a recruit has a Fong Bomb and a Dean Bomb, you know what time it is. The Buckeyes still have the No. 2 class in the country for 2024, but now they have the highest average player rating in the country at 93.7. Georgia has the No. 1 class in terms of overall points, but the Bulldogs' average player rating is a bit lower than OSU's at 93.2. Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show to discuss all of that and more. That is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Welcome back to episode five of Hip Hop History, this week we are talking about a legendary emcee. Kool Moe Dee is considered a game changer, a legend, a staple in hip hop. Kool Moe Dee came on the scene in a group the Treacherous Three. Kool Moe Dee was also part of the first major rap battle in history. He also ushered in the New Jack Swing sound and basically introduced the world to Teddy Riley. Kool Moe Dee is a legend. Have I said that three times already, yes, is it for a reason, you betcha! The man influenced every emcee after him, if they know it or not, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Jay, Push, B.I.G., Pac, Gucci, Jeezy, T.I. Snoop, Ross, literally everyone. Thank you Kool Moe Dee for everything you have given hip hop and the world. Thank you, and thank you for listening to this episode of Hip Hop History, please like, subscribe and leave a review where possible. Thank you and have a great day.

Episode 199: Joe and Kari are back with more R&B Superstars! Even though they've already reached the letter K in the Joel Whitburn book, they had to turn back a few pages to highlight Regina Belle, since that name has popped up a few times in the podcast. Then it's time to shine a spotlight on Kool Moe Dee, Lakeside, and the one and only Patti LaBelle! Canadian Singles: The CBC made a list of the best Canadian Songs of the 80's, and Joe and Kari are discussing a couple of songs by The Northern Pikes (cuties) and Michel Rivard. Joe and Kari are taking a break for one week after this episode to plan something special for EPISODE 200! Stay tuned!

It's Just Begun....that song should have been used in the Roxy battle scene according to the Beat Street dancers. As one of the all time great breakdance tracks, it would have been epic. Hollywood always wants to have its own way though, and Arthur Baker's Breakers Revenge became iconic despite that overruling. That factoid is one of many that I forgot to offload during this episode. I was delirious about doing Beat Street for weeks and still couldn't get it right. Kool Moe Dee making his first appearance on film in the Christmas Rap with the Treacherous Three, sans his trademark sunglasses that never came off again. Let's just say that I couldn't hit the ass end of a bull with a hand full of sand. It went on and on and on, reminiscing in our nostalgic glow over a movie that felt like an artifact-like documentary of a golden era. Admiring one of the only truly American art forms beyond jazz. Created partly due to a lack of access to the disco phenomenon during a particularly bleak time in New York City. The Boogie Down Bronx is a real thing, and 1520 Sedgwick Avenue is its mecca. Watch the movie, read some hip hop history, see Steven Hager's Village Voice article on September 21st 1982 called "African Bambaataa's Hip Hop", search his script "Looking For the Perfect Beat", image search Jamel Shabazz.....I need to lay down.
