Amare El Jamii was an on-again off-again community college student without a strong or consistent focus. That changed with the birth of his daughter. Remembering someone telling him as a youth that you either work with your back or work with your brain, he was ready to choose the latter. He finished community college, transferred to UCLA and earned a B.S. in Statistics and Applied Mathematics. After a series of positions working in higher education such as success coach, program intern and others, Amare now heads two non-profit organizations committed to getting youth college and career ready. He's Executive Director of the James T. Mitchell Pre- Apprenticeship Academy and Founding Partner of Cultivating Hope. Originally from Waterbury, Connecticut, Amare now resides in Southern California with his family. Favorite song: They Reminisce Over You by Pete Rock and C. L. Smooth. Favorite words: Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome by Joy DeGruy. Follow us on Instagram @365brothers and Facebook at 365BrothersThePodcast. It's not exactly like the upside-down. Maybe call it the leftside-right? Matt and Rav head back in time to discuss one of hip-hop's greatest songs, T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You). They review some of the ethics of sampling - per writer Joseph Schloss - assess the hip-hop scene in 1992, and break down why T.R.O.Y. exemplifies the beauty of sampling. P.S. my Spotify isn't loading so I'm not linking the albums, but if you wanna look them up, we talk about Tom Scott's Honeysuckle Breeze (meh), Pete Rock & CL Smooth's Mecca and the Soul Brother (hell yeah) and The Main Ingredient (also hell yeah). If you wanna look forward to our next episode, check out industrial hip-hop group clipping.'s back catalog and their new album, There Existed An Addiction To Blood. -Matt

The Major Scale gives a wink and a nod to Tom Scott and some of his early work. Before Scott was topping the charts with music for Tom Cat, L.A. Express with Joni Mitchell, along with scoring for film and TV- Starsky And Hutch, Let's Do It Again, and Family Ties, he was a teenage prodigy who was signed to Impulse Records – the home of his hero John Coltrane among other legends. Although these first albums weren't as popular as his later releases, over the past couple of decades they've become fertile ground for sampling - Massive Attack, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Hieroglyphics and countless others have rearranged his work to great heights. We talk with the man himself about this phenomenon – easily one of our most entertaining conversations yet! SONG CREDITS FOR THIS EPISODE: THEME: Jazz Phantom by Chomsk' (from the album "Different Beats" on Magnetic Records). FIRST HALF: Rural Still life #26 by Tom Scott (from the album "Rural Still Life" on Impulse Records). Milestones by Oliver Nelson (from the album "Live In Los Angeles" on Impulse Records). They Reminisce Over You by Peter Rock and CL Smooth (from the album "Mecca and the Soul Brother" on Elektra Records). Today by Tom Scott (from the record "Honeysuckle Breeze" on Impulse Records). With Respect to John Coltrane by Tom Scott (from the record "Rural Still Life" on Impulse Records). Looking Out for Number Seven, Woodstock and Trouble Me by Tom Scott (from the album "Great Scott" on A&M Records). Trouble Me by Joni Mitchell (from the album "Old Grey Whistle Test" on BBC/Asylum Records). Blue Lines (excerpt) by Massive Attack (from the album "Blue Lines" on Virgin Records). Sneakin' in the Back by Tom Scott (from the album "Tom Scott and LA Express" on Ode Records). ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! “I mean I don't see a halo on you, even though I see a couple of horns. See that little angel and that little devil on the side? Yeah. You're you.” -Serafin Jose Saavedra This story, the Story of Me, probably won’t have a proper ending, like the kind that is comforting and reminds you that all is well in the world. It shouldn’t. Because that’s false and I’m not dead yet. More than a month ago, the first part of this prologue aired with the intent of framing up this larger podcast project: a show about stories and the foolish pursuit of life, clarity and context. Family members, peers, friends and foes, from high school days to those that I work with were all interviewed. Rather, this prologue wraps up with the outside perspective. What do strangers think of me? If you’re six-years-old and reading this, don’t try this at home. You shouldn’t be talking to strangers. And then, the context. Was this project, a selfie in podcast form (possible Upworthy headline?), insightful? Did it provide any context about who I am? Granted, it’s just the prologue, but it’s Some Noise.
