In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles sits down with Ben Daughtry and Jonathan Palmer of Love Jones — the Louisville-born, LA-based band that has been crafting their unique blend of lounge, soul, pop, and sharp-witted storytelling for over three decades. The conversation kicks off with a shared love of live music, as both Ben and Jonathan trace their concert-going roots back to the same unlikely starting point: Van Halen. Ben recalls sneaking into a show at 14, way too young to be there, watching a then-unknown Van Halen open for Black Sabbath and feeling like "a bomb going off." Jonathan recounts his own Van Halen baptism at Freedom Hall in Louisville on the Women and Children First Invasion Tour — complete with $7.50 festival seating and his mother taking notes in the stands. From there, the episode becomes a wide-ranging tour through decades of live music obsession. The guys swap stories about Ted Nugent crowd surges, jumping on stage with GWAR in New Orleans, playing congas with Tool at an early Lollapalooza, and watching Rage Against the Machine move 60,000 people. Jonathan shares privileged industry moments — seeing The Rolling Stones at a 600-capacity room in New York alongside Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Questlove, and catching Nine-Inch Nails at The Troubadour when they felt "too big for the building." The conversation is fueled by genuine enthusiasm, with each story triggering another in a kind of joyful avalanche of rock and roll memory. The second half of the episode turns to the band's own story — from their residency at Largo on Fairfax, where David Bowie once sat quietly in a booth and Tool's crew became regulars, to their unexpected appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album Here's to the Losers. Charles and the guys dig into the Cocktail Nation moment of the '90s, the making of their new album The Greatest Show on Earth — written during COVID jam sessions in a Louisville warehouse with crickets chirping and trains passing — and the cinematic, Gil Evans-influenced sound that ties its six expansive tracks together. The episode closes with the band expressing hope to get back on the road, a shout-out to their partnership with Whiskey Thief Distillery, and a tease of possible activity around the 30th anniversary of the film Swingers, on whose soundtrack Love Jones famously appeared. Send us a textThe evening starts messy—mics checking, bottles clinking—and turns into the kind of roundtable that makes you want to jump in. We swap theater hacks, laugh at the cost of a refill, then slide straight into memories of soundtracks that raised us: Juice, Poetic Justice, Above the Rim. From there, it's a full-on culture sprint through hip-hop's golden moments and its most eyebrow-raising lyrics, the bars we once shouted that now make us pause—and laugh anyway. We go deep on Black cinema: Friday's unstoppable quotables, Harlem Nights' all-star magic, New Jack City's street iconography, Love Jones' grown romance, School Daze and Do the Right Thing reshaping campus and city conversations. We throw love at biopics that set the bar—Denzel's Malcolm X and Jamie Foxx's Ray—and ask why some performances feel definitive. Expect hot takes, curveballs, and a watchlist you'll actually use all month long: Penitentiary, Uptown Saturday Night, Let's Do It Again, Cornbread Earl and Me, The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh, and more.Sports and spectacle make a cameo. We kick around Super Bowl predictions, halftime hype, commercials worth caring about, and even question who the game is really for. Then it's back to joy: karaoke plans, catfish updates, and the movies on our radar right now. If you need a fast way to build a Black History Month queue, we've got you covered with a mix of canon and cult, heavy and hilarious, glossy and gritty. Hit play for laughs, stay for the list, and leave with five films to watch tonight. If this episode made you argue with your speakers, share it with a friend, subscribe for more, and drop your top five Black movies in a review—what did we miss? Thanks for listening to the Nobody's Talking Podcast. In today’s episode of The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, the first story zeroes in on the unsettling news that a man pardoned for his role in the January 6 United States Capitol attack was arrested after allegedly threatening to kill House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Authorities say the text messages were explicit and showed intent, raising new concerns about the effects of mass pardons and political-violence risk in the U.S. legislative sphere. Next up, controversial pastor Marvin Winans came under fire after a livestream showed him chastising a church member for donating less than what he asked for. While both parties later clarified the interaction, the video has ignited debates on giving culture, public shaming in houses of worship, and leadership accountability. Finally, fans of 90s romance have reason to rejoice: actors Nia Long and Larenz Tate — beloved for their roles in Love Jones — are reuniting for a brand-new Netflix romantic drama inspired by Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, marking a major return to form for the iconic duo. The Munsons welcome special guest Ed Chaja as we shine the spotlight on the eternally cool and effortlessly iconic Nia Long. From her early breakout roles in Boyz N the Hood and Friday to her unbelievable influence on pop culture—especially in music—Nia's presence is undeniable. We marvel at her shockingly consistent audience scores, laugh at the clueless casting directors who once called her “too sophisticated” for certain roles, and celebrate how she's always made sophistication look exactly right. Her soulful turn in Love Jones reminds us she could have dominated the romantic drama genre as the rare unicorn who captivates both male and female audiences alike. We track her first crossover into mainstream Hollywood with Stigmata, recognize her as the first actor we've covered with a legitimate connection to the Willennium, and applaud her recent SKIMS campaign for nearly breaking the internet at age 54. And of course, we take a moment to call out just how much of an idiot Ime Udoka was for ever letting her go. It's a celebration of elegance, longevity, and straight-up star power—Nia Long deserves her flowers. How does she rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.

Ever feel like society's constantly giving you the side-eye for being happily single? This episode of The NEXT Best Thing Podcast we're chatting with Dr. Kris Marsh from the University of Maryland, whose book The Love Jones Cohort is shaking up everything we thought we knew about relationships. Dr. Marsh introduces us to a growing group of college-educated, financially comfortable single Black Americans who are absolutely thriving without wedding rings. Named after that classic 1997 film (you know the one!), these folks are rewriting the rules of success and happiness."But aren't single people just... waiting to find someone?" Not according to Dr. Marsh's research! She breaks down how those strong friendships in your life might actually be delivering more happiness than that relationship you think you're supposed to be chasing. We get real about whether marriage still holds the same value it once did (spoiler alert: it's complicated), and why your net worth might matter more than your paycheck when it comes to being "middle class" today. The most refreshing part? Dr. Marsh's take on friendship. While everyone else is swiping right and stressing about dating, she's got the data showing how those ride-or-die friends might be the real MVPs in your happiness story. If you've ever felt that pressure to couple up just because everyone keeps asking "so, are you seeing anyone?" at family gatherings, this episode will feel like someone finally gets it. Dr. Marsh doesn't just understand—she's got the research to back up why your life choices are completely valid.Sign Up for The NEXT Best Thing Community: https://rewritecourse.com/communitySubscribe to the NEXT Nuggets Newsletter: https://thenextbestthingact.com/Follow The NEXT Best Thing on IG @nextbestthingpodStay in touch with Dr. Kris Marsh:Get The Love Jones Cohort: https://www.amazon.com/Cohort-Cambridge-Studies-Stratification-Economics/dp/1316612910IG: https://www.instagram.com/drkrismarsh/Bio: https://socy.umd.edu/facultyprofile/marsh/kris

Juice (1992) Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review! Greg Alba and Coy Jandreau dive into Juice, the 1992 crime thriller directed by Ernest R. Dickerson. This film captures the raw energy of Harlem through the lives of four teenagers—Q (Omar Epps, Love & Basketball, Higher Learning), Bishop (Tupac Shakur, Poetic Justice, Above the Rim), Raheem (Khalil Kain, Love Jones, Girlfriends), and Steel (Jermaine Hopkins, Lean on Me, Phat Beach)—as they grapple with friendship, loyalty, and the dangerous pursuit of respect, or "juice." The film's iconic moments include the tense convenience store robbery that sets the plot in motion, Bishop's chilling descent into violence and power obsession, and Q's internal conflict between his DJ dreams and his loyalty to his friends. With unforgettable lines like Bishop's cold declaration, “I am crazy... but you know what else? I don't give a f**,”* the film delivers a deep exploration of power, control, and identity. Supporting cast members include Cindy Herron (En Vogue, Witch Hunt) as Yolanda, Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Avengers) as Trip, and Queen Latifah (Chicago, Living Single) as Ruffhouse M.C. Juice remains a cornerstone in hip-hop cinema, blending gritty storytelling with a cultural backdrop that highlights the pressures of inner-city life. Tupac Shakur's breakout performance in the film only cemented his legacy, both as an actor and as a voice of his generation. To celebrate Tupac's influence, here are some of his most iconic songs: “California Love,” “Changes,” “Hit ‘Em Up,” “Dear Mama,” “Hail Mary,” “Keep Ya Head Up,” “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted,” “Ambitionz Az a Ridah,” “Me Against the World,” and “I Ain't Mad at Cha.” Follow Coy Jandreau: Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@coyjandreau?l... This week on Black on Black Cinema, the guys return to discuss the 1997 film, "Love Jones" starring Larenz Tate, Nia Long, Bill Bellamy, and Isaiah Washington. The film follows Darius Lovehall, a young black poet in Chicago, who starts dating Nina Mosley, a beautiful and talented photographer. While trying to figure out if they've got a "love thing" or are just "kicking it," they hang out with their friend, talking about love and sex. Then Nina tests the strength of Darius' feelings and sets a chain of romantic complications into motion.
This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to announce the next film to be reviewed, "Love Jones." The film follows Darius Lovehall a young black poet in Chicago who starts dating Nina Mosley, a beautiful and talented photographer. While trying to figure out if they've got a "love thing" or are just "kicking it," they hang out with their friend, talking about love and sex. Then Nina tests the strength of Darius' feelings and sets a chain of romantic complications into motion. The random topic of the week is all about our thoughts on the election between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. What we think the decision to put a known racist, sexist, abuser, and convicted criminal back to the highest office in the land. What fundamental lessons can be learned from this election, and diagnosing what The United States really and a large portion of its electorate really believes about equality of the races and sexes.
Our old friend Langston Kerman is back! We absolutely loved Langston's new Netflix special Bad Poetry and had to have him back to tell us what it was like to have a powerful white (John Mulaney produced and directed the special, and also Langston wrote on the fantastic Everybody's In LA) in your corner! But that's not all we talk about! We discuss how Langston was a big poetry dork in high school, yet still had the confidence to be popular. We talk about why he's not so into therapy. And of course, we talk about why Love Jones didn't cross over to white audiences. Something we talk about on almost every episode! PLUS, obvi, we answer YOUR advice questions! Send us a textThe phrase “mental health” has become very popular in recent years. We hear speeches and podcast episodes devoted to it and we discuss it amongst ourselves, but how seriously do we really take it? This episode of Dem Bois Podcast is part 2 of my conversation with Micah Roldan and he highlights the lack of resources and support for mental health, particularly for trans men. Micah also advocates for increased awareness for men's mental health, noting the higher suicide rates among men. So if you don't gain anything else from this episode, at least receive that! The premise of this C.L.I.P.S. installment is to take a look the UnPrisoned character "Mal" with the respect to our community's penchant to outright lionize strong Black leads like James St. Patrick (I said Sinclair), Franklin Saint, Nino Brown, Menace's O-Dog or Sugar Hill's Romello. Or maybe we laughed way too hard at Boomerang's Marcus while in our head replaying some of our own "doggish footage" from years ago. Are we, as Black men, too far gone to pay any attention to the love lessons learned by Darius Lovehall, or even Savon Garrison, in 1997's Love Jones? Big discussion to have, but Wood wastes some time looking closer at the example of Marque Richardson's "Mal" through two seasons of UnPrisoned. Wood couldn't think of the right word that many of us struggle with as young men, but the best of us succumb to an insatiable appetite for sexual exploits with women - and many a "bills" have come due for such decisions.
And Guest hosts Frantz and Aisha welcome the multi-faceted entrepreneur Love Jones to the mic. Love has been in the entertainment business for over 15 years, starting a casting agency at the age of 17! We chat about her love of Black nerdom and feeling seen now that Blerds are coming together stronger than ever. She recalls her late mother and the inspiration to live a full life, which means wanting something and going for it. We explore the mission of Martian Blueberry and the importance of developing and owning your intellectual property (IP.) This episode will reignite that fire to reach for your dreams or at least saw something in half in Gears of War. Get into it! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
All In Entertainment Group ,Well Known , Song SpeakReady for an AWESOME NEW Timeless Eclectic Music DuoThey were on separate paths and things just weren't coming together. The music wasn't hittin' like they both believed it could. B3E (aka Evan Bendel) was about to walk out the door on music and leave it behind, getting on a new path and preparing for a new career in law enforcement. But the opportunity to continue to do what he loves and clearly was born to do happened when they teamed up. While Evan has always been called “Bee” because of his last name, he flipped this 3rd time's a charm destiny moment, put it in his name and invested his supreme vocals into this new iteration of his skills. The story for JOANZ (aka Kenzell Jones), who was just stepping into the game–finding his voice and trying to find his focus and his fire–is that he's a wordsmith who grabbed his moniker from the motion picture “Love Jones” as a play on his musicality. That also includes his ability to play several instruments (bass, guitar, drums and saxophone). JOANZ had lyrics and needed something else, a voice that could punch up and push back on his verses with lyrics that helped the music catch fire. As fate would have it, a mutual friend introduced the duo, thinking it was for one song, one time only. But their convergence brought magic, just the magic that they both needed to forge ahead, so 2 solo artists put ego and pride aside and let the music ride. “We got into the studio and it was on and poppin' since then.” The song that brought the duo together hasn't even been released, but it did its job in bringing together these 2 talents to make music and set their sights on stardomInspired by everyone from Al Green, Michael Jackson, Commodores, Bee Gees, Earth, Wind & Fire and Sam Cooke to Roger Troutman, OutKast, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Lil Wayne, with both artists heavily influenced by Michael Jackson, these young music makers know what a great duo can do when they put their minds and their melodies to work! With a sound and solid respect for music that covers genres and generations, B3E sings for his soul while Joanz spits lyrics that include a Luther Vandross reference on “IN MY EAR,” while “NO BREAKS” pays homage to Bobby Brown's “Every Little Step,” but with a spin on it that talks about needing to take a step back and away.JOANZ + B3E is a new era in music! The familiar meets the ferocious! The melodic “SONG SPEAK” is sinewy and sensual, but from a man's perspective, it is unexpectedly vulnerable while playfully paying tribute to Aaliyah's “Rock The Boat,” showcasing the vocal skills of B3E and the floetry of JOANZ. The opposite is true of “WELL KNOWN,” with the hook “I ain't really with the handouts and I don't wanna fit in I'd rather stand out!” It's a declaration that tells you that they didn't come into the game to just have material success. They use vocals and verses to talk about hard work, commitment to their art and their audacity in believing that it's their time! “N***s ain't been where I be, seen what I seen. (Now they) all on me (like they) all know me.” Audacity goes to another level with “NOTICE ME,” their newest joint, telling the story of working hard as a young father (B3E) and a young cat with something to prove to the streets and to him. “It's just me, I ain't have a Plan B!” © 2024 All Rights Reserved© 2024 Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

In this week's episode, Boonie is joined by the homie Shika! We do a sh*t that hits different episode featuring the classic Love Jones. We express our disappointment with the movie, discussing how it lacks the drama we were hoping for. We even mention the poetry snap era and how we're glad we didn't experience it. Later in the discussion, we explain the shift in our mindset towards relationships as we've grown older, becoming more cautious and less excited. We take responsibility for being comfortable in our own space and admitting that actively dating is not a priority. Despite not fitting the conventional mold, we maintain hope for the future but are not currently focused on dating. A transcript of the full episode is available here. From ChatGPT: Bill Bellamy, also known as the "love doctor," is a comedian, actor, and author who's been making audiences laugh for decades. He's starred in hit movies like "Love Jones" and "How to Be a Player," but his true claim to fame is his smooth-talking, ladies' man persona. When he's not busy dispensing relationship advice, Bill can be found hitting the comedy club circuit or working on his latest book, "How to Charm Your Way Out of a Traffic Ticket." He's also an expert in all things hip-hop, and can drop a sick beat at a moment's notice. In his free time, Bill enjoys long walks on the beach (preferably with a beautiful woman by his side), playing basketball (as long as he wins), and cooking up a storm in the kitchen (as long as someone else does the dishes). He's the ultimate renaissance man, and we're thrilled to have had him on our podcast this morning.
