In 1995, half of the production team and rapper of The Trackmasters, Red Hot Lover Tone released his sophomore album titled #1 Player. Though the album didn't sell well, it is considered to be an underground gem with great features and production. https://www.tiktok.com/@brandonhetzel996?_t=ZT-8vtVlGi3mIc&_r=1 https://www.instagram.com/str8_the_clippa?igsh=cTBzNnFhenRkN3Nl&utm_source=qr https://www.facebook.com/share/16BNDffEnm/?mibextid=wwXIfr

This week we're talking about a production team that had a major influence on a time in hip hop that we spoke about in the last episode, the so-called “jiggy, shiny suit, bling bling era.” Even though they had been around since 1990 doing tracks for act like Chubb Rock, Kool G. Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Roxanne Shante and The Real Roxanne, 1994 is when they really started to shine. Making albums and tracks for LL Cool J, Nas, Foxy Brown, Jay-Z, J. Lo, Will Smith, 50 Cent. You can arguably say that the sound of hip hop & R&B music was defined by them. They have 23 number one singles and five Grammy awards, we're talking about Poke & Tone, the Trackmasters. If you enjoy the content that we're making and you're looking for ways to support our independent podcast, here's a little something that you can do:Please leave us a 5 star rating or review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podchaser or Goodpods. You can also drop a few coins in our tip jar here: https://ko-fi.com/troypodcast if you're feeling generous. If it's merch that you're looking for, check out our store, Nuthin' But A Tee Thang, at teethang.comSpreading the word about the show to your friends and family helps too. However you choose to support, know that it is greatly appreciated as always.
Welcome Back to the Record Report! For this episode, we're taking the train to Queens with our guest DJ Rugby Segal to review Nas' sophomore project It Was Written. Dropping in 1996, It Was Written reached both critical and commercial success thanks to a blend of beats from household names like DJ Premier, Trackmasters, and Dr. Dre, as well as Nas' ability to tell vivid street stories. As always, we choose their top three tracks, Howard talks about the album's immediate impact, and Vance talks about how It Was Written could be the album to make him stop trolling Nas. We also talk about what we're listening to, HipHop50 weekend moves, and iconic rap moments at Morgan. @Yo_Ahki/@VanceB_ @rugbysigel410 Listen to this new episode and previous others on: Apple Podcasts(https://tinyurl.com/jydzz9fk)Spotify (https://tinyurl.com/c3u77hcf) Anchor (https://anchor.fm/recordreport) Follow Record Report Podcast on: Instagram: (@RecordRepPod) Facebook: Facebook.com/RecordReportPodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/recreppodcast?lang=en #Nas #ItWasWritten #TheFirm #HipHop #NewYork #RandB #AZ #Queens #LaurynHill #IronMan #Radio #Podcast
We are back for PART 2 of our Mariah Carey “Butterfly” journey. In this episode, Angie (@poetrysoul3) and Steffi (@inn_mho) break down the era! This week, we read listener feedback and reviews and discuss our thoughts on Mariah's Butterfly 25 campaign. In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era's ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we talk about Tommy Motttola, Derek Jeter, and that one time Da Brat & Mariah escaped Sing Sing to get some fries at Burger King! We also discuss 90s media culture and how BRAVE Mariah was for promoting/addressing the dramas of her marriage to the man…who just so happens to be her boss & head of the label. Whew. There's so much to unpack her: Mariah's feelings on her multiracial identity, her place in the Vocal Trinity, and her dog Jack. Lambs, we hope we did your girl proud. Mariah, spread your wings and fly.Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track. We hope you enjoyed our Mariah Carey “Butterfly” journey!Album Info: Butterfly is the sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey, released on September 16, 1997, by Columbia Records. The album contains both hip hop and urban adult contemporary sounds, as well as some softer and more contemporary melodies. Throughout the project, Carey worked with Walter Afanasieff, with whom she had written and produced most of the material from her previous albums. She also worked with many famed hip hop producers and rappers, such as Sean "Puffy" Combs, Q-Tip, Missy Elliott and the Trackmasters. With the latter acts producing most of the album, Butterfly deviated from the adult contemporary sound of Carey's previous albums.*Email us for show notes: divadailiespod@gmail.com*Twitter & Instagram: @divadailiespod*YouTube: Diva Dailies PodcastSTEFFI'S SOCIAL MEDIA:*Twitter & Instagram: @inn_mho*YouTube: innmyhumbleopinionANGIE'S SOCIAL MEDIA:*Twitter: @poetrysoul3*YouTube: Sleepy Nerd ProductionsTIME STAMPS:- Housekeeping (01:10)- Listener Feedback (03:29)- Our Thoughts on Butterfly 25 (12:58)Era Breakdown (18:00)- Pop Corn & Pop Stars (19:55)- Spill the Technicolor Tea (25:15)- But We Need the Audience to Buy the Album (56:58)- Video Killed the Radio Star (70:07)- The Mic Is On (84:34)- Show Me the Receipts (88:53)- Impact/ Closing Thoughts (92:57)- Preview Next Week's Episode (98:03)

Big thank you to Brooklyn, New York's own Maino for coming on my show for an interview! Maino discussed the new Lobby Boyz album, his I slap box the devil at night reference on the Lobby Boyz Anthem, and when he formed a brotherhood with Jim Jones to create their duo. He talked about the personal stories he told on the song Project Baby off of The Lobby Boyz album, how DJ Kay Slay helped him early on in his career, and Cormega putting him on Monsters Ball, in which that was the first album he was ever featured on. He got into his time with Universal Records, Tone from Trackmasters helping him get signed, and the story with Birdman being the reason why he left Atlantic Records. Maino spoke about portraying the shooter who shot 2Pac in the All Eyes On Me movie at Quad Studios, writing a show with his late friend Michael K Williams before he passed, and being the first NYC artist to work with Nipsey Hussle. He also gave his thoughts on the rappers being killed and going to jail for their song lyrics. Stay tuned for everything that Maino has on the way, including The Lobby Boyz tour! On episode 4 Torae and Bonsu take it back to April of 1997. Mary J Blige is a bonafide star and her 3rd album Share My World is released. With Rodney Jerkins, Trackmasters and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis at the helm would Puff Daddy's absence be noticable? Could Mary "do it again"? Tap in and hear what the guys had to say.
B. Cox and Domo review Mary J. Blige's pivotal third album Share My World as it turns 25. After a three-year hiatus from her sophomore album My Life and a split from producer, manager and mentor Sean "Diddy" Combs, the annointed "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul" reemerged on a new label and with a change in sound. After suffering from clinical depression and bouts with drugs alcohol, Blige made an effort to clean up her life and found a renewed focus on her music.Departing working with Diddy for the first time, she served as co-executive producer with Steve Stoute and worked with producers such as the Trackmasters, Rodney Jerkins, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and Bryce Wilson. She also had features with the likes of Nas, Lil' Kim, the LOX, Kelly, George Benson and Roy Ayers. With a more optimistic outlook on life, she set out to prove that she had range beyond just hip-hop themed beats and tracks and that she could be a convential R&B songrtress as well. The album was her first to debut as #1 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart in the US and reached the Top 10 in several other countries. It has been certified triple platinum and is considered as the project that helped her cross over into mainstream success.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comLearn More About the "Podcast GPS" BootCamp Course!www.vaultclassicpod.com/podcastgpsSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesAlbumism: Mary J. We had the pleasure of interviewing Haley Smalls over Zoom video! Toronto based singer-songwriter Haley Smalls recently release her latest single “Do Better . This single release follows a string of consistent singles over the last year from Haley, including Run-DMC influence track “Bass” that premiered with Hip-HopVibe & Rolling Out, as well asSummer 2021 buzz track “I Do.”. Haley's single “Do Better” is the build up to her currently untitled 5th project set for release in 2022. Lyrically, the core of the project centers around love: love of self, love of others, and the love of success and the money it brings. While the style of the project is rooted in R&B/Hip Hop don't be surprised to hear a country or rock influence come through as Haley works to make her sound uniquely diverse creating something that can be received by all, no matter their background or their age. Now, after inking a deal with industry veterans Jimmy Maynes & JoJo Brim at V Nation, along with her long-time management team from Ludacris' Ebony Son Mgt and music producers Poke and Tone from Trackmasters, Haley Smalls finally has the right team in place to release her next project in 2022. Haley started her musical journey at a young age when her parents recognized her unique talents and signed her up for singing lessons. Haley started booking studio time at age twelve, writing songs and working with producers in the U.S. and the UK. After years of grinding, it all came to fruition when she met her producer in 2013, the Grammy nominated multi-Platinum Megaman. Her 2015 debut This Is Me was a culmination of Haley coming into her own and shaping her identity. Following This Is Me Haley released a series of noteworthy projects, including 2017's Heart of Gold, 2018's The Cure II, and 2019's Summer Nights. She continued her momentum through 2020, releasing a series of tracks well into 2021. This next phase for Haley Smalls is unstoppable now that she finally has the right team around her, following her recent signing to V Nation. Sas well as updates on her upcoming project due out later this year. We want to hear from you! On episode 118 of the Cast Worthy Podcast, "Cancel the legacy", Big Steve and EJ sound off on a number of popular urban topics, sports and a little more. The VP of research had to sit this one out but he will be back in full force the next episode. This episode was recorded via #streamyard on Sunday October 3, 2021. 3:00: The fellas discuss R. Kelly and his trial verdict, the sentencing date, and whether or not people will intentionally not listen to his music. Should we cancel the man or cancel the legacy? 13:00: One of the worse things about R. Kelly's heinous behavior is that his music legacy is in debate and the world will never get to see him in a verzuz. The crew discusses who could possibly battle R. Kelly, the upcoming Verzuz between King Asiatic Big Daddy Kane and The Blast Master KRS One. The crew then discusses who would be a great battle for Busta Rhymes... EJ says, LL Cool J would make a phenomenal Verzuz against Busta. We know Diddy will probably never battle JD but could the Trackmasters be another battle? 26:00: Bingeables: 50 Cent is killing the game right now with BMF, Raising Kanan and Power. Steve discusses Squid Game on Netflix, EJ supporting black films, has to honestly admit Candyman was trash! Steve asks has Jordan Peele had his run already? The Circle finale, EJ watches The Many Saints of Newark, but won't spill until Steve watches.45:00: The crew makes NFL Picks and discusses betting odds and some Draftkings strategy betting. As always the CastWorthy content can be found on most streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Spreaker and more. B. Cox & J. Owe review Nas' second studio album It Was Written. It was his highly anticipated follow to his classic debut Illmatic. Upon release, the reviews were mostly mixed as most noticed the album had a more commecial feel and mixed with Mafioso and mob themes, and produced largely by the Trackmasters, which were seen by some as a departure from his debut. Despite some criticism, it became his best selling-album buoyed by a incredibly successful single with "If I Ruled The World" featuring Lauryn Hill.Since then, the perception of the album has improved, with praise for Nas' improved lyricism and ability to tell stories with vivid imagery. A few emcees actually cite this work as their favorite Nas album over Illmatic.Follow The Vault on IG: @vaultcmrpodcastFollow The Vault on Twitter: @VaultClassicSubscribe to the Vault on Youtube: The Vault: Classic Music Reviews PodcastShow notes:Complex: The Making of Nas' It Was Writtenhttps://www.complex.com/music/2016/07/nas-the-making-of-it-was-writtenAlbumism: Nas' 'It Was Written' Turns 25 | Anniverary Retrospectivehttps://www.albumism.com/features/nas-it-was-written-turns-25-anniversary-retrospectiveRevolt TV: Remember Nas' 'It Was Written' 25 Years Laterhttps://www.revolt.tv/2021/7/2/22561080/nas-it-was-written-album-25-anniversaryLegacy Recordings: Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Nas' 'It Was Written' with Newly Expanded Digital Additionhttps://www.legacyrecordings.com/2021/06/24/legacy-recordings-celebrates-25th-anniversary-of-nas-it-was-written-with-newly-expanded-digital-edition/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

For our fourth installment of The Producers, we’re diving into The Trackmasters’ catalog of hits! The duo of Poke & Tone were responsible for a ton of hits in the mid to late 1990s, when we were starting out DJing clubs, so these songs all hold a special place for us. Their classic sound is …

The final episode in our 3-part debate focuses on Nas’ ‘It Was Written’ - the team argue for why Escobar’s record should or shouldn’t get into Crate 808, ahead of Notorious B.I.G.'s ‘Life After Death’ and Dr. Dre’s ‘2001’. Expect the usual categories and more, as we chat ‘90s hip hop. Show Notes: 11:50 - It Was Written intro 1:33:30 - Album conclusion 1:34:38 - Final decision: Which album gets into Crate 808? What’s good Few Tang Clan?!?! No description today; just a list of things we talked/argued about… Jay-Z v. Drake is a dumb idea. Is Jermaine Dupri’s disrespect for TrackMasters ridiculous? 12 songs Alchemist should play in a battle with anyone but Havoc. Hezekiah Walker v. John P Kee?!?!? Should @Verzuz battles be monetized? How will media change post-stay at home? Salute @hi_its_keysha, 1/4 of the #Straight2TapePodcast! Thanks for the Instagram Live convo the other day. In the 90's and early 2000's the Trackmasters seemed to work with just about everyone. I put this show together to highlight some of my favorite remixes and originals produced by the hit duo.

Armond & Doc continue on this week to quickly discuss Joe Budden's Drake diss before diving in to have their first 're-retrospective' on Nas's 1996 breakthrough "It Was Written". They discuss why the album was controversial, if it still holds up, and try to figure out what the heck is going on with the sequencing. Plus Doc sounds like a very, very old man. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents #TheAre #interview session! We head to Houston this week and have quite an in-depth interview with The Are of the almighty K-otix. The pedigree here speaks for itself - it’s no wonder his resume is what it is. After we get the lowdown on the new K-otic LP, we kick things off by going to the some of The Are’s early musical influences, like his uncle who played base for Archie Bell & the Drells, a chance meeting with DJ Premier and meeting DJ Cash Money while working at one of Houston’s premier vinyl spots back in the day. Of course we get the origins of K-otix story, his decision to make a break from the group and his eventual return. The Are was a member of the Trackmasters, you say? THAT Trackmasters…like Poke & Tone Trackmasters?! Yeah, we got that story too. All this and more is waiting inside, so don’t delay! While you’re listening, go pick up the new, ultra-limited K-otix LP “Legendary, which is produced entirely by The Are - there’s only 300 copies, folks, and they’ve already peeled through half of them! Summer is almost here so I wanted to come with a mix that'll sound good during those sunny days. Back when radio still playing what was hot and not force fed, the duo of Tone and Poke ruled the airwaves. From the 90's all the way to the mid 2000's you couldn't listen to the radio without hearing a Trackmasters produced track. So here's another trip through memory lane. Hope you all enjoy.
