On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with a remastered version of episode 50, our Hieroglyphics Tribute. This was a mammoth one. We've got special guests Slug, Murs, Apathy, J-Zone, The Grouch & Breakbeat Lou stopping by. We interview Del, Domino, Casual & Tajai and they've got stories for days! Del talks about doing shrooms with Q-Tip to Casual freestyling with Pharoahe Monch at the Gavin. We touch on Casual vs. Saafir and the impact it had on battle rap. We unfortunately find out Ice Cube wasn't a fan of Gang Starr and thought Kool Keith was too weird. Del explains what it was like not only being cousins with Ice Cube, but their musical similarities and his involvement earlier on in his career. We learn about Del's feelings towards the Gorillaz, while Domino breaks down just about every Hiero collaboration imaginable. We talk I Wish My Brother George Was Here, '93 Til Infinity, No Need For Alarm, Fear Itself, Like It Should Be and No Man's Land. We discuss their rap dominance prior to being dropped by the label. Tajai's breaks down his feelings towards the group's sophomore album and the importance of each album sounding different. This episode can be a slow burn or a fast one, but we all know Hiero is til infinity! www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal

B. Cox and J.Owe look back at Oakland rap group Souls of Mischief debut album 93 Til Infinity as it turns 30. In the midst of a coastal emergence and commercial recognition in both southern California and the Bay-Area, the teenage group became major players in the Oakland underground scene. After their demos became the talk of certain rap circles and their music was circulated on the legendary "Wake Up Show" with Sway and Tech, the group secured a record deal and started working on their debut album. As a part of the alternative hip-hop collective Heiroglyphics, the album wa entirely produced by group member A-Plus and collective members, Domino, Jay Biz, Casual and group founder Del the Funky Homosapien. Utilizing mainly jazz records from record label CTI Records, the album featured looped jazzy melodies with menacing, but smooth bass tones and snapping drums to give the album its underground feel. The four emcees (Phesto, Opio, Tajai along with A-Plus) impressed with their versatile flows, timely punchlines and skilled wordplay. In a step away from their mainstream contemporaries, the album featured every many topics such as neighborhood violence, the importance of safe sex, exploitation and hanging out.The album featured three singles, the most popular being the classic title track that reached the Top 20 of the Hot Rap Singles and the Top 100 of the Billboard charts. While the album did not have great mainstream success, the album and the ever popular title track have risen in recognition and popularity in the three decades since its release, with many marking it as a landmark underground release and underground West Coast hip-hop classic.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: Souls of Mischief Debut Album '93 Til Infinity Turns 25 | Album Anniversaryhttps://albumism.com/features/souls-of-mischief-debut-album-93-til-infinity-album-anniversaryColumbus Free Press: Bus Stile Activities: Souls of Mischief "'93 Til Infinity"https://columbusfreepress.com/article/bus-stile-activities-souls-mischief-%E2%80%9C93-till-infinity%E2%80%9DWGBH Radio: Souls Of Mischief Tajai Massey On The Lasting Power of "'93 Til Infinity"https://www.wgbh.org/culture/2023-06-16/souls-of-mischief-s-tajai-massey-on-the-lasting-power-of-93-til-infinitySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
A couple weeks ago we did an episode dedicated to the first 50 years of hip hop. There was a lot to go over and a lot to cover, so we had to break it up into two episodes. We're only gonna get about 8% of it. But we are back on this episode to pick up where we left off. We finished up the last episode talking about the Golden Era, and on this episode we're gonna start with what is known as the Bling Bling Era through current day hip hop.If you enjoy the content that we're making and you're looking for ways to support our independent podcast, here's a little something that you can do:Please leave us a 5 star rating or review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podchaser or Goodpods. You can also drop a few coins in our tip jar here: https://ko-fi.com/troypodcast if you're feeling generous. If it's merch that you're looking for, check out our store, Nuthin' But A Tee Thang, at teethang.comSpreading the word about the show to your friends and family helps too. However you choose to support, know that it is greatly appreciated as always.
On this episode, we are discussing something that's been a part of our lives as far back as we both can remember. It's influenced the way we dress, the way we talk, the music we listen to. It's what makes us who we are. In 2023, we're celebrating 50 years of this culture that we call hip hop. We were originally gonna do just one episode, but realized that this conversation might take a little longer than usual, so part 2 will be dropping in a few weeks. If you enjoy the content that we're making and you're looking for ways to support our independent podcast, here's a little something that you can do:Please leave us a 5 star rating or review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podchaser or Goodpods.

In this episode, I share the 6th installment of the 2023 til Infinity Tribute of my top 12 favourite albums of 1993 which all turn 30 years this year. In this one, I share my thoughts on the legendary KRS-One and his debut solo project Return of the Boom Bap. Check out the whole episode as I have a story to tell.
In this episode, I share part 5 of my 2023 til Infinity series - Souls of Mischief. The quartet from East Oakland California delivers one of the greatest debut albums of all time. This one is near and dear to me so let's break it down the Hiero's effect on hip hop.
30 years after their debut, Souls of Mischief are proving that the title of their song "93 'Til Infinity" is true. Currently, they are in the middle of a world tour spanning over 100 dates, selling out shows around the globe, winning over young fans through streaming, and demonstrating a longevity that is rarely seen in rap music. This exclusive interview with all 4 members of Souls - A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai - touches on their upbringing in East Oakland, their early days recording with Del the Funky Homosapien, traveling to LA as teenagers to build with Ice Cube, Sir Jinx and Eazy-E, and the ups and downs of signing to a major label. As members of the Hieroglyphics collective along with Del, Casual, Pep Love, Domino, and DJ Toure, Souls and their comrades have been successful independent artists since the 90s. They also touch on how they define success for themselves, their pursuit of other careers outside of music, and how their friendship has helped them stick together to inspire new generations through music year after year. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

In this episode, this is the third stop on my '23 til Infinity tribute on the 12 great hip hop albums of 1993 - arguably the best year in hip hop history. RIP to Plug 2 aka Dave aka Trugoy, Buhloone Mindstate was the gate way album for me and De La Soul so it holds a special place in my heart. I thought many times of not recording this because just too many rappers have passed away way too soon. I decided to push forward and share my thoughts and feelings towards the album.
In this episode, we move to part 2 of the 2023 'til Infinity tribute celebrating one of my 12 favourite albums as the great year of 1993 hip hop releases turns 30. As the world awaits the release of his highly-anticipated sixth studio album The Off-Season, set to drop this Friday, J. Cole stopped by Power 106's L.A. Leakers to freestyle over a pair of rap classics: Mike Jones' “Still Tippin'” and Souls of Mischief's “93 'Til Infinity.”Cole led things off by rapping effortlessly over Souls of Mischief's hard-hitting classic, before bodying the beat of the Swishahouse crew's 2004 anthem “Still Tippin'.”The pair of freestyles arrive amid a busy week for Cole. After sharing “Interlude,” the first single from his upcoming album, last Friday, the 36-year-old North Carolina rapper kicked off this week with the release of his new documentary Applying Pressure: The Off-Season. Then, on Tuesday, he became the first rapper to grace the cover of Slam magazine, as he chopped it up with Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins and discussed where his mind is at as he prepares for what may or may not be the last leg of his music career.During the extensive interview, Cole explained the inspiration behind The Off-Season's title, comparing his career to that of a basketball player.“The Off-Season symbolizes the work that it takes to get to the highest height,” Cole explained. “The Off-Season represents the many hours and months and years it took to get to top form. Once you get to the season, it's too late to get better. You'll get better naturally, but what you know is what you know. You're getting that shit off in the off-season. So, that's really what [the title] represents. It represents the time spent getting better and pushing.”While acknowedging that he's entering a later stage of his career, Cole maintained that he has no plans of slowing down.“I'm doing all this work to be at peace with, if I never did another album, I'm cool,” he explained. “That's the reason for all of this, so I know that I put everything on the table. I left everything on the table, and I'm good with that. Because there's a lot of shit I want to do with my life and in my life that, because I have such an intense love and passion for the craft, if I don't let that go, I'm not going to be able to get to these other things that I also want to learn and grow and be good at.”SOURCE: Watch J. As the world awaits the release of his highly-anticipated sixth studio album The Off-Season, set to drop this Friday, J. Cole stopped by Power 106's L.A. Leakers to freestyle over a pair of rap classics: Mike Jones' “Still Tippin'” and Souls of Mischief's “93 'Til Infinity.” Cole led things off by rapping effortlessly over Souls of Mischief's hard-hitting classic, before bodying the beat of the Swishahouse crew's 2004 anthem “Still Tippin'.” The pair of freestyles arrive amid a busy week for Cole. After sharing “Interlude,” the first single from his upcoming album, last Friday, the 36-year-old North Carolina rapper kicked off this week with the release of his new documentary Applying Pressure: The Off-Season. Then, on Tuesday, he became the first rapper to grace the cover of Slam magazine, as he chopped it up with Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins and discussed where his mind is at as he prepares for what may or may not be the last leg of his music career. During the extensive interview, Cole explained the inspiration behind The Off-Season's title, comparing his career to that of a basketball player. “The Off-Season symbolizes the work that it takes to get to the highest height,” Cole explained. “The Off-Season represents the many hours and months and years it took to get to top form. Once you get to the season, it's too late to get better. You'll get better naturally, but what you know is what you know. You're getting that shit off in the off-season. So, that's really what [the title] represents. It represents the time spent getting better and pushing.” While acknowedging that he's entering a later stage of his career, Cole maintained that he has no plans of slowing down. “I'm doing all this work to be at peace with, if I never did another album, I'm cool,” he explained. “That's the reason for all of this, so I know that I put everything on the table. I left everything on the table, and I'm good with that. Because there's a lot of shit I want to do with my life and in my life that, because I have such an intense love and passion for the craft, if I don't let that go, I'm not going to be able to get to these other things that I also want to learn and grow and be good at.” SOURCE: Watch J. In this episode, I speak with Josh Hawley, a close friend who will soon be returning to the US after a five-year stint in Japan. This is Josh's second stay in Japan, the first being as a US Navy sailor back in the late 1990s, at which time he met his ex-wife and had a son, both of whom he remains in close contact with today. While in Japan, Josh spent over a year teaching in Tateshina, and during that time we spent a great many hours together hiking Nagano's gorgeous peaks and taking long walks around town together with Den, the doge. The Deep in Japan Podcast is completely independent and crowd-funded, and by that I mean we eke out an existence on the kindness of your donations. The intro was my own original mashup of Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star), a few anime sound bites, some kabuki, a cheap recording of my son's Buzz Lightyear toy, and “Dubstep" from BenSound.
